RapportService.exe is the main service executable installed by IBM Trusteer Rapport, also called Trusteer Endpoint Protection. A copy at Program FilesTrusteerRapportbinRapportService.exe is consistent with a legitimate Rapport installation. The filename by itself is not proof that a file is safe: an unsigned copy in another folder, or a copy on a PC where Rapport was never installed, needs separate investigation.

Use the checks below to identify the file, test whether Rapport is causing a browser or security-software conflict, reduce errors safely, and remove Rapport when its uninstaller is blocked. The manual procedures come first; an optional shortcut appears only after them.

What rapportservice.exe does

IBM Trusteer Rapport is a security application intended to protect banking and other sensitive browsing sessions. Its Windows installation includes several executables. IBM’s verification guidance identifies these files as components that should be active for Rapport protection:

Executable IBM’s role description What to check
RapportService.exe Rapport service executable and a listed process Expected under Program FilesTrusteerRapportbin
RapportMgmtService.exe Management executable Should belong to the same Rapport installation
RapportHelper.exe Helper executable and a listed process Should be in the Trusteer Rapport program directory

On a typical 64-bit Windows installation, the full path may begin with the drive letter, such as C:Program FilesTrusteerRapportbinRapportService.exe. The important part is the TrusteerRapportbin directory, not the drive letter. A different location is not automatically malicious, but it is not the expected path documented by IBM and should be examined before you trust or delete the file.

Is rapportservice.exe safe?

It can be safe when you intentionally installed IBM Trusteer Rapport and the executable is in the expected Trusteer directory. IBM describes the Rapport system-tray icon as the visual indication that Rapport is running. If the icon is missing and not merely hidden, IBM says Rapport may be stopped or uninstalled.

Do not use the name alone as a safety verdict. Malware can copy a familiar filename, while a legitimate installation can be damaged or partially removed. IBM’s general verification pages do not provide one universal hash that proves every copy is genuine, so the local path, installation state, signature information and Windows Security results all matter.

Safety checklist

  • Was Rapport deliberately installed? Check Settings and the Start menu for Trusteer Rapport or Trusteer Endpoint Protection. If nobody installed it, treat the file as unexplained.
  • Is the path expected? The documented location is Program FilesTrusteerRapportbinRapportService.exe. A copy in a user profile, temporary folder, download directory or unrelated system folder deserves additional scrutiny.
  • Does the file have a valid signature? In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. An absent or invalid signature is a warning, not by itself a complete malware diagnosis.
  • Does Windows Security report a problem? Run a scan before deleting an unfamiliar executable. If a scan detects a threat, follow Windows Security’s remediation instructions rather than manually launching or moving the file.
  • Does the installed product match the process? A running process with no corresponding Rapport installation should be investigated separately from a normal Rapport service.

Why it may use CPU or produce errors

The official material does not establish a universal CPU percentage or a single cause for high usage. CPU behavior must be measured on the affected computer, together with the installed Rapport version and Windows build. A brief spike during browser activity is different from sustained usage that makes the system unresponsive.

One documented cause of visible problems is an incompatibility between Rapport and another security product. IBM specifically describes this possibility when a browser will not start. Rapport also interacts with browsers and security software, so an update, damaged installation or conflict can appear as a browser launch failure, repeated service errors or an inability to stop the process.

Collect facts before changing anything

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and select the Processes tab. Note whether RapportService.exe or RapportHelper.exe is present, and record CPU and memory usage for several minutes instead of relying on one instant.
  2. Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Compare the folder with the IBM-documented Trusteer path. Do not end the process merely because the name looks unfamiliar.
  3. Open the file’s Properties and record the displayed product, version and signature details. Also note the Rapport version shown in its own control panel if available.
  4. Write down the Windows edition and build. IBM’s general pages do not provide a current support matrix for every Windows release, so a version-specific answer may require IBM support.
  5. Record what changed immediately before the problem: a Rapport update, browser update, new antivirus or endpoint product, Windows update, or an attempted uninstall.

Start Rapport when it is installed but stopped

The tray icon should appear by default when Rapport is running. A hidden icon can be found by opening the notification-area overflow menu near the clock. If the icon is genuinely absent, first confirm that the product is installed rather than assuming the service has crashed.

  1. Open Windows Search and type Trusteer.
  2. Select Start Trusteer Endpoint Protection, the Start-menu command IBM documents for launching Rapport.
  3. Wait for the tray icon to appear, then open the icon’s status or control window. If Windows reports that the program cannot start, capture that message before attempting removal.
  4. Return to Task Manager and verify that the expected Rapport process appears in the Trusteer directory. If it does not, repair or reinstall using IBM’s instructions for your installed build, or contact IBM support.

Test whether Rapport is conflicting with a browser or security product

When a browser refuses to start, IBM recommends stopping Rapport temporarily to see whether the browser problem resolves. This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent security recommendation.

  1. Save work in every browser and close all browser windows.
  2. Open the Rapport tray control and use its supported Stop or equivalent temporary-disable command. The exact label can differ by Rapport build; use the command provided by the installed control rather than forcibly terminating random processes.
  3. Launch the browser again. If it still fails, Rapport is not proven to be the cause; continue with the browser’s own troubleshooting.
  4. If the browser starts only after Rapport is stopped, re-enable Rapport after the test and review IBM’s compatibility guidance for the browser and other security product. Look for a newer Rapport build or ask IBM support about the specific Windows and browser versions.
  5. Do not leave protection disabled while banking or performing other sensitive work unless you understand the risk and have another approved protection arrangement.

Manual fixes for common rapportservice.exe problems

The process is in the wrong folder

End-user deletion is not the first step. Confirm the path, inspect the signature, and run Windows Security. If Rapport was never installed, preserve the detection details and use Windows Security’s quarantine or removal action. If the file is part of an installed Rapport copy but was moved or duplicated, reinstalling the legitimate product through IBM’s supported process is safer than replacing individual executables from an unverified download.

The service is missing or will not start

Check the Start-menu command described above and verify that the Rapport installation still appears in Windows’ installed-app list. A missing tray icon can mean the service is stopped or that the product has already been uninstalled. If the app entry exists but startup fails, record the exact message, version and Windows build, then use IBM’s repair or support instructions. Avoid downloading a similarly named executable from a file-sharing site.

CPU usage remains high

First confirm that the process is the genuine file in the expected directory. Observe whether usage falls when browsers are closed and whether it returns after a particular site or security product starts. Temporarily stopping Rapport, as described in the browser-conflict test, can help isolate it. If usage remains high with Rapport stopped, investigate another process instead. If it returns only when Rapport runs, update or reinstall through IBM’s supported channel and provide IBM with the recorded version, Windows build and timing.

A browser will not launch

Close the browser completely, stop Rapport using its own control, and retry. A successful launch with Rapport stopped supports the incompatibility theory IBM describes, but it does not identify which component is incompatible. Re-enable Rapport for normal protection, check compatibility information, and contact the relevant vendor if no supported update resolves the conflict.

Windows shows repeated service or startup errors

Capture the full wording, event time and application version. Check that the installation directory has not been renamed and that security software has not quarantined one of the related Rapport files. Do not disable Windows security controls globally to make the message disappear. A repair, supported update or clean reinstall may be required; IBM support can determine the correct package for the specific build.

Uninstall Trusteer Rapport normally

Remove Rapport only after checking whether a bank, employer or other administrator requires it. If you keep using a service that expects Rapport, uninstalling it can change that service’s protection requirements.

  1. Close every browser window and any Rapport control window. Locked files are a documented reason for uninstall failure.
  2. On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, the equivalent is usually Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  3. Search for Trusteer Endpoint Protection or Trusteer Rapport, select the entry, and choose Uninstall.
  4. Follow the product’s removal wizard. Restart Windows if it requests a restart, even if the wizard appears to finish.
  5. After restarting, check the notification area, Start menu and installed-app list. Confirm that the Rapport entry and expected processes are gone before removing any leftover folder.

When files are locked

IBM states that some Trusteer Endpoint Protection files can be locked by another software. Close browsers, password managers, security dashboards and other programs that may be using browser protection, then retry the normal uninstall. If the lock persists, follow IBM’s uninstall instructions for the installed version or contact IBM support. Avoid deleting the Trusteer folder while the uninstaller is still registered, because partial removal can leave broken services and make a later reinstall harder.

Use Microsoft’s troubleshooter as a fallback

Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is designed for common situations in which a desktop program cannot be installed, uninstalled or updated. Use it only after the normal Rapport uninstall path and IBM’s instructions have failed.

  1. Create a restore point or another recovery option appropriate for your Windows edition before making registry-level changes.
  2. Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter and choose the option for uninstalling a program.
  3. Select the Trusteer Rapport or Trusteer Endpoint Protection entry when it appears. If the product is not listed, use the product code only when Microsoft’s tool provides one and you can identify it confidently.
  4. Allow the troubleshooter to apply its documented repair, restart Windows, and check the installed-app list again.
  5. If removal still fails, stop experimenting with registry entries and ask IBM support for version-specific cleanup steps.

Keep Rapport, update it, or remove it?

There is no universal choice for every Windows PC. Use these decision points rather than treating every rapportservice.exe alert as malware or every browser conflict as a reason to uninstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option When it makes sense Checks to complete Main caution
Keep the installation You intentionally use Rapport and it runs from the expected Trusteer directory without unresolved conflicts. Tray icon appears when protection is running; browser and security software work together. Continue monitoring unusual CPU behavior and keep the product within its supported configuration.
Update or reinstall The file is legitimate but startup errors, browser conflicts or damaged components began after an update or partial failure. Record Rapport version, Windows build and the exact symptom; use IBM’s supported package or guidance. Do not substitute an executable from an unofficial download.
Remove Rapport You no longer need it, your organization does not require it, or a verified compatibility problem cannot be resolved. Close browsers, run the normal uninstaller, restart, and verify the product is gone. A failed uninstall may leave locked files; use IBM’s fallback instructions or Microsoft’s troubleshooter.

After a successful removal

  • Restart Windows and check Task Manager for RapportService.exe, RapportMgmtService.exe and RapportHelper.exe.
  • Confirm that your browser opens normally and that any banking or workplace requirement for Rapport has been addressed.
  • Run Windows Security if the original reason for removal was an unexplained executable or an unexpected installation.
  • Keep the uninstall record, error message and version information in case a support technician needs to reconstruct what happened.
  • Do not delete unrelated files merely because their names contain Rapport. Verify the path and product association first.

When to escalate

Contact IBM support when the official uninstaller cannot remove locked files, when a supported reinstall repeatedly fails, or when you need to know whether a particular Rapport build supports your Windows release. Include the exact executable path, digital-signature result, Rapport version, Windows edition and build, browser version, security products installed, and the steps that reproduce the problem.

Seek Windows Security or professional malware assistance instead when the file is outside the expected Trusteer directory, Rapport was never installed, the signature is invalid, or a security scan reports a threat. Those cases cannot be authenticated from the filename alone.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and includes an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Bottom line

RapportService.exe is normally the IBM Trusteer Rapport service when it resides in Program FilesTrusteerRapportbin and Rapport was intentionally installed. Verify the path and signature, use the tray control to test browser conflicts, close browsers before uninstalling, and turn to IBM’s instructions or Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter only after the normal removal path fails. An unexplained copy in another directory should be scanned and investigated as a separate Windows security issue.
