What QSSR does on PS5
Sony describes QSSR as a faster performance tier derived from PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the AI-upscaling technology available on PS5 Pro. PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them. Sony says its computational demands had prevented that experience from coming to the standard PS5.

QSSR is designed around a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned by hand to maximize performance on PS5. Sony calls PSSR the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro, while positioning QSSR as a way to bring AI-guided upscaling and improvements in detail and image stability to the standard console. Those descriptions are Sony’s claims, not independent test results. Sony’s announcement does not provide a resolution, frame rate, latency figure, image-quality score, or before-and-after benchmark.

Sony named two first games. On October 1, 2026, it said both were being patched to add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

The announcement does not establish the precise patch-release time in each region, so check for the latest game update and graphics settings on your console. Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but it did not name more supported games or give dates for future releases.
What improvements should players expect?
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said it adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine detail in characters and environments and provides temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developer statements about their games; Sony’s announcement includes no numerical measurements to compare QSSR with another graphics mode.

Because QSSR is presented as an optional graphics setting, its effect should be assessed in the supported game and mode rather than assumed to be identical across titles. The announcement does not quantify any trade-off in resolution, frame rate, or other performance characteristics.
Does QSSR require a PS5 Pro or a new console?
No. Sony describes QSSR as a graphics option in patched games on the standard PS5. It does not say existing PS5 owners need to buy a new console to use it. The announcement does not clarify whether every PS5 hardware revision or every region receives the feature at the same time.
