What Is Qi Wireless Charging and How Does It Work?

Qi wireless charging transfers energy across a short gap using magnetic induction. A charging pad contains a transmitter coil; a compatible phone contains a receiver coil. Alternating current in the pad creates a changing magnetic field, which induces voltage in the phone. The phone and charger exchange control signals so charging can be adjusted or stopped, but the pad still needs a wired power supply.

Qi2 is the newer part of the Qi family. Its Magnetic Power Profile uses magnets to help the coils align, while Qi v2.0 also includes an enhanced profile without magnets. Charging speed, magnetic attachment and compatibility depend on the exact phone and charger profiles—not simply on the words “wireless” or “Qi2” on a product listing.

What Qi wireless charging means

Qi (pronounced “chee”) is a wireless-power standard maintained by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). It defines how a power transmitter, such as a pad or stand, transfers energy to a power receiver, such as a smartphone. Qi initially launched in 2010 and has since expanded across phones, accessories and other consumer devices. The WPC says more than 13,000 Qi Certified products are on the market; the page reporting that figure does not state a year.

“Wireless” describes the connection between the charger and device, not the entire electrical system. The charging pad must be connected to an external power adapter or another power source. Only the short transfer from the pad’s coil to the device’s coil is contactless.

How Qi charging works, step by step

  1. Power reaches the transmitter. A cable and power adapter supply the charging station. The station converts that input into the electrical conditions used by its transmitter coil.
  2. The transmitter creates a magnetic field. Alternating current flows through the coil in the pad. Because the current changes, it produces a changing magnetic field above the charging surface.
  3. The receiver coil captures energy. A compatible phone has a receiver coil positioned behind its back cover. The changing magnetic field induces a voltage in that coil across the small air gap between phone and pad.
  4. The phone conditions the power. The phone’s charging circuitry converts the induced electrical energy into a form suitable for running the device and charging its battery.
  5. The two devices communicate. The phone sends control signals to the charging station. Those signals allow the system to regulate transfer and tell the transmitter when charging should be reduced or stopped, including when the battery is full.

This is magnetic induction, not a beam of electricity and not charging over a room-sized distance. The coils must be close enough and aligned well enough to couple effectively. If the phone is displaced from the active area, the charger may deliver less power, pause, or fail to start.

Why alignment affects charging

Inductive charging works best when the transmitter and receiver coils overlap. A flat pad gives you a placement area, but the phone can slide away from the strongest coupling point. A thick case, a wallet insert or an object between the phone and pad can increase the gap or interfere with alignment. The practical result can be slower charging or an intermittent connection even when both products support Qi.

A stand can make alignment easier because it holds the phone in a repeatable position, but the phone still has to support the charger’s profile. A stand is not automatically faster than a pad; form factor mainly changes positioning and visibility while charging.

Qi, Qi v2.0 and Qi2: what changed

Version names describe related but distinct capabilities. The WPC dates Qi v2.0 to 2023 and lists Qi specification v2.3 as the latest version. The full current specification and detailed test requirements are available to WPC members, so public summaries do not establish every engineering limit or behavior for every certified product.

Profile or version What the public WPC description establishes What a buyer should verify
Earlier Qi versions Inductive wireless charging using a transmitter and receiver, with device-to-charger control communication. The phone’s supported Qi generation and maximum input power; the exact charger’s certification listing.
Qi v2.0 Introduced in 2023. The family includes Qi2’s magnetic profile and an enhanced Extended Power Profile (EPP) without magnets. Whether the specific product uses the magnetic profile or non-magnetic EPP.
Qi2 The WPC describes 15 W charging for mobile devices certified for Qi2 interoperability and safety. Its Magnetic Power Profile adds magnetic attachment to help alignment. Whether both phone and charger support Qi2 and whether the phone supports magnetic attachment.
Qi2 25W Launched in July 2025. The WPC says it offers nearly 70% more power than Qi2 and can charge a smartphone battery from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes. Treat those as WPC-published claims, not universal results. Confirm the exact phone, charger and power-adapter specifications.

The magnetic distinction is important. A product associated with Qi v2.0 is not necessarily magnetic: the enhanced EPP option does not require magnets. Conversely, magnetic attachment is useful only when the phone and charger have matching magnetic-profile support. A magnet can hold the phone in place, but it cannot add wireless-charging capability to a phone that lacks a receiver coil.

How fast is Qi charging?

There is no single Qi speed. The effective rate is constrained by the profiles supported by both the phone and the charger, as well as the power supplied to the charger. A phone may accept less power than the pad advertises, and a pad may reduce transfer when alignment or operating conditions are poor.

The WPC describes Qi2 as 15 W for certified mobile devices. It describes Qi2 25W as nearly 70% more power than Qi2 and gives an example of charging a smartphone battery from 0% to 50% in approximately 30 minutes. Those figures come from the WPC overview; they are not an independent benchmark or a promise for every model combination. Battery capacity, temperature, software controls, adapter capability and the phone’s own charging limits all affect the time a user sees.

Look for the phone maker’s stated maximum wireless-input power and the charger maker’s supported profile. Do not infer the phone’s rate from a headline such as “25 W” on a pad’s packaging.

What Qi certification tells you

Qi certification involves independent laboratory testing for safety, interoperability and energy efficiency under the Qi program. Certified products are designed to work together across manufacturers, including products using earlier Qi versions. That makes certification more useful than an unqualified marketplace label such as “Qi compatible.”

Certification is not an endorsement and is not a blanket safety guarantee. The WPC states that manufacturers remain responsible for applicable product-safety regulations and that WPC certification does not guarantee a product’s safety. In practical terms, certification is evidence that a particular model was tested against the program’s requirements; it does not replace the manufacturer’s legal and engineering responsibilities.

How to check whether a phone and charger will work together

  1. Confirm wireless-charging support on the phone. Check the phone manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation. A phone with no built-in receiver cannot be made Qi-compatible by placing it on a pad.
  2. Identify the supported generation or profile. Note whether the phone lists an earlier Qi version, Qi2, a magnetic profile or another explicitly named profile. Do not assume that a Qi2 label means magnets.
  3. Check the phone’s maximum wireless power. Use the phone maker’s figure as the limit for that device, rather than the charger’s larger advertising number.
  4. Check the charger’s exact model. Search the model number in the WPC Certified Products database. Product listings can change, and a seller’s generic wording may not identify the tested model.
  5. Match the physical design to your use. Choose a pad for a simple horizontal surface or a stand when you want the phone held upright. For magnetic attachment, verify that both sides support the corresponding magnetic profile.
  6. Use an adequate power source. The pad still needs a suitable external adapter and cable. If the adapter cannot provide the input the charger expects, the wireless output may be limited.

Common reasons Qi charging is slow or stops

The phone is off-center

Reposition the phone so its receiver coil is over the pad’s active area. A stand or a magnetic profile can make repeatable placement easier.

The devices support different profiles

A charger can fall back to a lower compatible mode, or it may not start at all, when the phone does not support the advertised profile. Check both manufacturers’ specifications and the WPC listing for the exact model.

The charger is underpowered

Verify that the charging pad is connected to the recommended external power source. Replacing only the pad while leaving an unsuitable adapter in place may not change the result.

The phone limits charging

Phones can manage charging to protect the battery or control heat. Compare the observed behavior with the phone maker’s documentation before assuming the pad is defective.

Qi versus a cable

Qi’s main benefit is convenience: placing a phone on a prepared surface avoids plugging and unplugging a connector. It can also reduce connector wear and keep a device easy to pick up. A cable remains preferable when you need a guaranteed connection, want to use the phone while it is in your hand, or need the fastest wired mode available from that phone.

Wireless charging introduces alignment and conversion losses that a direct cable connection does not have in the same way. The right choice is therefore situational: use Qi for drop-and-go convenience, and use a cable when the phone’s wired specification, portability or reliability matters more.

Safety and expectations

Qi systems are designed so the phone can control the transmitter, including telling it to stop when the battery is full. Use intact equipment from reputable manufacturers, keep the charging surface clear of loose metal objects, and follow the phone and charger makers’ instructions. Certification testing covers the Qi program’s stated safety, interoperability and efficiency requirements, but it does not eliminate the manufacturer’s responsibility for compliance with local safety rules.

Remember that “Qi-certified” and “Qi2” describe a standard or profile, not a guarantee that every combination delivers the maximum advertised wattage. The exact phone model, charger model, adapter, case, alignment and software behavior determine the result.

What to look for when buying a Qi charger

  • Exact certification: Search the model number in the WPC Certified Products database instead of relying only on a retailer’s description.
  • Profile match: Select a charger that supports the phone’s Qi generation and, where relevant, Qi2 or the magnetic profile.
  • Power match: Compare the phone’s supported input with the charger’s output. A higher number on the charger does not force the phone to accept it.
  • Alignment and form factor: Choose a pad or stand based on how you use the phone. Magnetic attachment helps only with compatible magnetic-profile devices.
  • Complete power setup: Confirm that the required cable and external adapter are included or available and meet the charger’s stated requirements.

Where the standard stands now

The WPC identifies Qi v2.3 as the latest Qi specification and says it is available to WPC members. Public consumer pages explain the mechanism, profile differences and certification process, but they do not publish every detailed test threshold. For a purchase decision, model-level certification and the device makers’ specifications are more useful than assuming all products in a version family behave identically.
