qbist.exe is usually associated with a GIMP plug-in, but the filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe. Legitimate examples have been observed in a GIMP plug-ins directory and launched by GIMP. A different 54 KB sample, however, was reported as Risk.NetCat, so you should verify the exact path, parent process, signature, hash and scan result before allowing or deleting the file.
The safest approach is to identify the file, scan it, quarantine it if detected, and repair or reinstall GIMP only when the executable clearly belongs to software you trust. Never download a replacement qbist.exe from a random EXE or DLL website.

qbist.exe is commonly described as a plug-in executable for the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). EchoTrail labels it a “GNU Image Manipulation Program Plug-In” and records seven observed executions. The most common observed location was:

The figure of seven executions is a dataset observation, not a prevalence estimate for all Windows computers. You should judge the copy on your own computer rather than assuming that the common filename or a familiar path settles the question.
Is qbist.exe safe, or could it be malware?
There is no universal answer without examining your exact file. A copy is more consistent with a legitimate GIMP component when the following facts agree:
- It is inside the GIMP installation or a plug-ins folder you deliberately configured.
- GIMP launches it, rather than an unknown script, command shell, scheduled task or unrelated program.
- You remember installing GIMP and the file’s version and installation dates fit that installation.
- Its digital signature is intact and a current security scan is clean.
These are indicators, not guarantees. ThreatInfo’s report lists a qbist.exe sample with MD5 b872945bc4f4d233a57b692f74a5cfda, a size of 54 KB, first seen on 2021-01-11 and last analyzed on 2024-08-02. The report says GridinSoft Anti-Malware detected that sample as Risk.NetCat. It also reports a valid signature by Jernej Simoncic and GIMP-related paths. A signature can support the provenance of that particular binary; it does not certify every qbist.exe copy and does not override a security detection.

A suspicious location, an unknown parent or a detection does not by itself identify the complete cause, but each should move you toward containment instead of repeated launches.
How to inspect the exact qbist.exe file
1. Record every copy and its full path
If Task Manager shows qbist.exe, open the Details tab, right-click the process and select Open file location. If a security alert names the file after it has been stopped, copy the path from the alert. You can also search the system drive for qbist.exe; multiple results must be evaluated separately.

Do not run a copy merely to see what it does. Record the drive, directory, file size, creation and modification dates, and the application that installed it. A file in %Temp%, Downloads, a Startup folder or an unrelated application’s directory deserves more scrutiny than one beneath the GIMP directory, although path alone is never proof.
2. Determine what launched it
Use Task Manager’s process details and, if necessary, a reputable process-inspection utility to identify the parent process. In the observed GIMP context, gimp-2.8.exe was the parent. An unexpected launcher may indicate a persistence mechanism or a renamed copy. Note whether qbist.exe starts only when GIMP opens, only when a particular image or plug-in is used, or during Windows startup without GIMP running.
3. Inspect the signature
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab. Select a signature and choose Details to check whether Windows reports that it is valid, who signed it and whether the certificate is current. Compare the signer and file version with the GIMP package you knowingly installed. The Jernej Simoncic signature mentioned in the ThreatInfo report applies to that reported sample only; it is not a blanket validation for all files named qbist.exe.
4. Calculate and preserve a hash
A cryptographic hash lets you distinguish your file from another file with the same name. In PowerShell, substitute your actual path and run:

The reported MD5 b872945bc4f4d233a57b692f74a5cfda is useful only when it exactly matches the file under investigation; a different hash is a different sample.

Scan qbist.exe before deleting or restoring it
Use Microsoft Defender’s full scan
Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start the scan. A full scan is preferable when the file starts unexpectedly or when other suspicious behavior is present. Allow Defender to quarantine a detected file and keep the detection name, path and hash for later investigation.

Microsoft has documented Defender detections and removals for QBot/QakBot threats and advises prompt investigation when such threats are detected. That guidance does not mean every qbist.exe alert is QBot or that a single scan explains the source of your file; it illustrates why an unexpected detection should not be dismissed.
Do not create an exclusion for an unknown file
An antivirus exclusion would allow the executable to run without the normal protection checks. Do not add qbist.exe to an exclusion simply because GIMP stops working. First determine whether the file is a trusted GIMP component, then reinstall the application from its trusted distribution source if necessary.
Contain a possible compromise
If the file is detected and you suspect that it ran, disconnect the computer from networks while you investigate, especially before entering passwords or accessing financial accounts. From a separate trusted device, change important credentials and enable multifactor authentication where available. Preserve the detection details rather than deleting every related file at random; those details help identify persistence and scope.
Fix a qbist.exe error that occurs only in GIMP
Restart GIMP normally
Close GIMP and start it from the shortcut or executable installed with GIMP, not from a recently downloaded qbist.exe. If the error appears only while GIMP loads a plug-in, the problem is more likely to involve that installation, a damaged plug-in, a version mismatch or a dependency than Windows as a whole.
Back up your work before repairing
Copy artwork, custom brushes, patterns, scripts and other personal GIMP resources to a separate location. A reinstall can remove or reset custom plug-ins and preferences. Keep the backup outside the directory that you plan to remove.
Update or reinstall GIMP from a trusted source
Use the official distribution channel from which you obtained GIMP, or the original installer you verified. Uninstall the existing GIMP installation only after backing up your files, then restart Windows if the installer requests it and install the current compatible release. Restore custom plug-ins one at a time, beginning with sources you trust. If qbist.exe returns only after restoring a particular plug-in, remove that plug-in and scan again.

Repair instead of copying a replacement executable
If GIMP’s installer offers a repair option, use it. Otherwise, reinstalling the complete application is safer than copying a standalone qbist.exe from the internet. A replacement from an untrusted download page can contain malware, have the wrong architecture or break the plug-in interface. The available qbist.exe evidence does not establish a special Windows command that repairs this file directly.

Leave the detected file in quarantine while you establish provenance. Record the product name, detection label, hash, path and time. Do not restore it merely to test whether GIMP opens. Check whether the file came from a GIMP installation you knowingly installed and whether the installer can replace it. If the source cannot be established, keep it quarantined and submit the hash to a reputable multi-engine analysis service according to that service’s instructions.
After removal, inspect GIMP’s installation directory and Windows startup mechanisms for other unfamiliar files. Run another full scan after updating security definitions. If credentials or financial information may have been exposed, seek professional incident-response assistance rather than relying on an application reinstall alone.

Startup applications
Open Settings > Apps > Startup and review entries you do not recognize. Disable an unwanted entry only after recording its name and publisher. A normal GIMP plug-in should not need to launch at every Windows logon merely to provide an image-processing function.
Task Scheduler
Open Task Scheduler and inspect the task library for recently created or oddly named tasks that point to qbist.exe, a script or an unfamiliar parent program. Export or photograph the task details before changing them. Remove a task only when you have confirmed that it is unwanted and have preserved evidence for a security investigation.
Recently installed software and launchers
Review Settings > Apps > Installed apps, browser downloads and installer history. If an unknown program installed the file, uninstalling only qbist.exe may leave the parent application or persistence mechanism behind. Remove the unwanted parent application through Windows’ normal uninstall process, then scan again.
Do not edit the registry as a first step
Registry editing can disable legitimate software or make Windows harder to start. Use the startup and scheduled-task interfaces first. If a confirmed compromise requires registry cleanup, make a backup and obtain qualified assistance.
Fix broader Windows instability separately
If many unrelated applications crash, Windows shows system errors, or the computer freezes even when GIMP is closed, do not assume qbist.exe is the root cause. Check recent driver, application and Windows changes, available disk space and Event Viewer entries around the time of the failure. A damaged Windows component can coexist with a GIMP problem.

- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run

Record the command output. If the machine remains unstable, use Windows recovery options or professional support; do not keep deleting executables from system folders in an attempt to stop a crash.

Can you delete qbist.exe?
You can remove a confirmed unwanted copy, but manual deletion is not the safest first move. Deleting a legitimate plug-in may make GIMP report an error, while deleting only one malicious file may leave its launcher or other components behind.
- Legitimate GIMP path, clean scan: leave the file in place and repair or reinstall GIMP if it is corrupted.
- Security detection or unknown provenance: quarantine it with the security product, preserve the hash and investigate persistence.
- Duplicate in a temporary or download directory: do not open it; scan and remove it after recording its details.
- File locked or repeatedly recreated: find the parent process or scheduled task instead of forcing deletion.
Never download a “missing qbist.exe” replacement. A trusted GIMP installer is the proper source for a legitimate component.
When you cannot determine provenance
Some cases remain ambiguous: the signature may be absent, the installation may be old, the alert may provide only a filename, or the file may have been copied between computers. Treat that uncertainty as a security issue. Keep the file from running, calculate its hash, submit the hash to a reputable multi-engine service, and compare the results with the file’s path and parent process. If the computer contained work credentials, saved passwords or financial data while the file was active, ask a qualified incident-response professional to examine it.

Do not claim certainty from a familiar GIMP path, a valid signature or one clean scan. Confidence comes from several independent facts that agree and from the absence of unexplained persistence.

qbist.exe often belongs to GIMP plug-in installations, especially when GIMP launches it from its plug-ins directory. But at least one exact sample was classified as Risk.NetCat, so the name is not a safety guarantee. Verify the file’s path, parent process, signature, hash and scan result; quarantine suspicious copies; and repair GIMP from a trusted installer rather than downloading a standalone executable. No single qbist.exe-specific Windows repair command is established, so unexplained system-wide failures should be diagnosed as broader Windows problems.
