A .pyw file is intended for windowed execution. When Windows opens it through pyw.exe or pythonw.exe, any print() output and an ordinary traceback have no visible console in which to appear. The program may be running, may have exited immediately because of an error, or may be waiting for a GUI action; the missing window alone does not tell you which situation occurred.

Why pyw.exe and pythonw.exe are both present
The launcher and interpreter have different jobs. The launcher selects a Python installation, while the interpreter executes the code. On a computer with more than one Python version, the launcher’s selection and the Windows alias configuration determine which interpreter receives the script. That is why a problem can affect pyw while pythonw, py, or python appears to work.
What a windowed launch requires
There must be an intact Python installation containing the launcher and windowed interpreter, and Windows must resolve the corresponding aliases or file association to that installation. The script itself must also be suitable for running without a terminal. A command-line utility that waits for typed input can look frozen when started with pyw, even though the launcher is functioning normally.
Is pyw.exe safe?
A genuine copy installed as part of an official Python installation is normally a legitimate Windows component. However, “pyw.exe” is only a filename. Another program can use the same name, copy the file to an unusual directory, or bundle a legitimate-looking file with unwanted software. Treat an unexpected copy as untrusted until its provenance and behavior have been checked.
Checks that establish provenance
- Source: Consider how Python was installed. A file that arrived with a trusted, official Python distribution is more consistent with the documented launcher than one downloaded from a random software site or attached to an unknown installer.
- Location: Open the file’s location from the shortcut or process that launched it. A path within the Python installation or the normal Windows launcher area is consistent with a genuine component. A copy in a temporary folder or an unfamiliar user-data directory deserves closer scrutiny.
- Publisher and signature: In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. Check the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. A missing or unexpected signer is a reason to investigate, not a reason to run the file.
- Defender result: Scan the individual file and the surrounding folder with Microsoft Defender. A detection, quarantine event, or repeated warning should be treated as a security issue until resolved.
Do not turn off antivirus protection or add an unknown pyw.exe to an allow list simply to make a script run. Microsoft recommends current security intelligence and full scanning when unwanted software is suspected. If concern remains after a full scan, use Microsoft Defender Offline so the check can run outside the normal Windows session.
What a safety check can and cannot prove
A valid signature and an expected installation path support the conclusion that the file came from the publisher associated with the Python installation, but they do not prove that every script it launches is harmless. Conversely, an unusual path does not automatically prove malware; it may indicate a second Python installation, a portable setup, or an application that embeds Python. Base the decision on the source, signature, path, and Defender findings together.
Why the filename is not enough
Malware frequently chooses familiar names because users are more likely to trust them. A legitimate name can also be copied into a temporary download directory. Conversely, a valid Python installation can live in a nonstandard directory if an administrator or application selected that location. Do not delete a file solely because its path looks different, and do not approve it solely because its name is exactly pyw.exe. Verify the complete chain: where it came from, which program installed it, who signed it, and what Defender reports.
Common pyw.exe errors and what they mean
“pyw.exe not found” or a shortcut does nothing
The launcher or the Python runtime may have been removed, the file association may be broken, or a Windows app-execution alias may still point to an installation that no longer exists. Start by running the same script from Command Prompt or PowerShell with py script.py or python script.py. If that command also fails, the issue is broader than the windowed launcher. If it works, focus on the alias and file-association settings used by pyw.
pyw.exe opens a different Python version
Multiple installations, the Python install manager, and conflicting aliases can select different runtimes. You may see one version from python or py and another from pythonw or pyw. Python’s current Windows documentation specifically directs users to Manage app execution aliases when the windowed commands do not launch the same runtime as their console counterparts.

This mismatch often explains a missing-module error. A package can be installed in one Python installation while the windowed launcher starts another that does not contain it. Reinstalling the package repeatedly does not solve that situation; first make the launchers resolve consistently, then install dependencies into the selected environment if the console traceback still requests them.
The script appears to do nothing
This is the most common consequence of using a windowed launcher during troubleshooting. A syntax error, missing package, bad path, or exception can close the process without displaying a traceback because no console was created. Run the file with python script.py or py script.py and read the output there. Fix the reported script or environment problem before switching back to pyw.
Also check whether the program is waiting for a graphical action, opening behind another window, or exiting normally after completing a short task. A silent launch is not automatically a crash. The console test distinguishes a genuine failure from a program that simply has no visible startup window.
A security alert names pyw.exe
The file may be a renamed or masquerading executable, or a legitimate Python component may have been bundled with an unwanted application. Record its full path, inspect the publisher and signature, and scan it with updated Defender security intelligence. Do not whitelist it solely because the name matches Python’s documented launcher.
pyw.exe keeps appearing
A repeated window or repeated process launch means that something is invoking the windowed launcher more than once. First identify the file or shortcut being opened and run the script in a console so any error is visible. Then inspect the script’s association and any shortcut or startup item that launches it. If the copy being invoked is in an unexpected directory or Defender reports it, stop launching it and complete the security checks before changing associations.
A double-click behaves differently from a command
Double-clicking a .pyw file uses Windows’ association and app-execution aliases, while an explicit py script.py or python script.py command tests a chosen launcher. If the command works but the double-click does not, the code is less likely to be the immediate problem. Correct the association or alias rather than downloading another executable. If both methods fail, investigate the traceback, dependencies, working directory, or damaged installation.
Manual repair workflow
Follow these steps in order. They separate a Python-script problem from a launcher problem and avoid hiding useful diagnostic information.

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell, change to the folder containing the script if necessary, and run

Check Windows app-execution aliases
Open Start, search for Manage app execution aliases, and open that settings page. Review the entries for
python.exe,pythonw.exe,py.exe, andpyw.exe. They should be enabled and should refer to the installation you intend to use. If the windowed aliases point at a removed or different installation, correct the conflicting entries according to the Python installation you want to keep. -
Confirm the selected installation
Consider whether several Python versions or the Python install manager are present. Compare the behavior of
pyandpythonwithpywandpythonw. Remove stale aliases or configure the intended default so the console and windowed commands resolve consistently. Repeat the console test after making one change at a time; this makes it clear which setting fixed the mismatch. -
Check the association and shortcut target
For a file that fails only when double-clicked, inspect its Open with choice and the target shown in any shortcut. Confirm that the target is the Python installation you verified, not an old path or a same-named executable in a temporary directory. Change one association at a time and test again. Avoid registry cleaners or random “missing DLL” downloads; they do not establish which Python runtime the script should use.

Repair or reinstall Python from a trusted source
If the launcher or interpreter files are missing or damaged, use the repair option provided by your Python installation when available. Otherwise reinstall Python from an official, trusted distribution. Avoid replacing one missing executable with a download from an unofficial file site. After repair or installation, test with

Once the script works through

A GUI application should provide its own visible error handling or write to a log because the console will not be available. If the program stops again, return to the console command and use its traceback as the diagnostic source.
How to diagnose a silent failure without changing the script permanently
Use the console launcher as a temporary diagnostic mode. Open PowerShell or Command Prompt, run the file directly, and keep the window open long enough to read the result. A missing package, syntax error, permissions problem, or incorrect working directory will normally be visible there even though the same failure looks like “nothing happened” under pyw.

Logging for deployed GUI programs
After the launcher is repaired, plan for the absence of a console. A GUI program should display a useful error dialog or write diagnostic information to a known log location. Otherwise a future exception will again look like a missing executable. Add logging deliberately and test it under the same account and shortcut that end users will use; a program started by a shortcut can have a different working directory from one started in a terminal.

The absence of a console is a presentation choice, not evidence that the launcher failed. It also means that a successful program may appear to do nothing until its graphical window opens, and an unsuccessful program may leave no visible explanation. Build logging or an in-application error display into GUI programs that need support after deployment.
When the problem is an association rather than Python itself
Double-clicking a .pyw file relies on Windows’ association and app-execution alias settings. A broken association can make a valid script appear unresponsive, while an outdated association can send it to a Python version that lacks the required package. Test with an explicit py or python command first, then correct the aliases and association. Avoid downloading a replacement executable just because double-clicking stopped working.
