psi.exe is usually the executable for Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI), an old Windows program that checked installed applications for missing security patches. Flexera, which owned Secunia, ended PSI availability after April 20, 2018. Therefore, a psi.exe process on a current PC is normally a remnant of an old installation or startup entry—not a current Windows component.
The filename alone does not prove that a file is legitimate. Malware can copy any familiar name. Check the file’s location, digital signature, publisher, hash and Defender scan result before deciding whether to keep, remove or quarantine it.

What psi.exe was used for
Secunia PSI was a Windows application designed to inspect installed third-party software and identify missing security updates. Its normal executable was commonly launched from a path similar to %ProgramFiles%SecuniaPSIpsi.exe. On 64-bit Windows, an older 32-bit installation may instead be under the 32-bit Program Files directory.
Flexera announced the product’s end of life and said PSI would no longer be available after April 20, 2018. Flexera’s 2017 update described historical adoption of more than 8 million users worldwide; that figure is not a current user count and does not indicate that PSI is still supported.

Windows itself does not require psi.exe. If you see it today, it generally comes from one of these situations:
- PSI is still installed on an older Windows installation.
- An uninstall removed the program but left a startup shortcut, scheduled reference or registry entry.
- A damaged installation is trying to launch a file that was moved or deleted.
- A different application, or malicious software, is using the same filename.
Is psi.exe safe or a virus?
There is no universal safe-or-unsafe verdict based only on the name. A legitimate historical PSI executable should be in a Secunia PSI folder and, where a signature is present, identify Secunia as the signer. A file called psi.exe in a Windows system folder, a temporary user folder, Downloads or an unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny.
A PSI 3.0.0.11004 sample was reported as signed by Secunia and clean by 68 scanners on September 26, 2026. That result applies only to that particular sample and hash; it does not certify every file named psi.exe on your computer.

Check the running file’s path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes or Details tab, find
psi.exe. - Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Record the complete path. A legacy path beneath
C:Program FilesSecuniaPSI(or the 32-bit Program Files directory) is consistent with an old PSI installation. Any other location requires further verification.
Verify the publisher and signature
- Close the process only if necessary, then right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures. If a signature exists, select it and choose Details.
- Confirm that the signer is Secunia and inspect whether Windows reports the signature as valid. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to investigate, not by itself proof of malware.
- In the Details tab, note the product name, file version and original filename. Save the file hash for comparison with a reputable multi-engine scanning service.
Inspect ownership when the path is unclear
Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can show which executable owns a process and which files or DLLs it has opened or loaded. Use it when Task Manager does not make the relationship clear, especially if several files with the same name exist.
Scan before deleting
Update Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence and run a full scan. Microsoft notes that potentially unwanted applications can display unwanted advertising, consume computing resources unexpectedly or offer additional software, and recommends current protection and trusted download sources. If suspicious behavior remains after a normal scan, use Defender’s offline scan option. Quarantine findings through Windows Security and preserve the path and detection information for troubleshooting.
Why psi.exe errors appear
Messages such as “psi.exe not found,” “psi.exe is missing,” startup failures, crashes or unusually high resource use can have different causes. Identify the owner and location before attempting a repair.

| Likely cause | What you may notice | What addresses it |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete or corrupted PSI installation | The process fails at startup or Windows reports a missing executable. | Uninstall the obsolete PSI installation; repair Windows components only when the broader system is damaged. |
| Leftover startup reference | A pop-up or event appears after PSI was removed, although no program is present. | Confirm the entry belongs to Secunia PSI, then remove that specific startup reference. |
| Invalid path or registry reference | Windows tries to launch a path that no longer exists. | Remove the verified PSI entry rather than changing unrelated registry values. |
| Antivirus quarantine or manual deletion | The application was present previously but now cannot start. | Check Defender’s protection history and scan the remaining files before considering any restoration. |
| Malicious look-alike | The file is outside the Secunia directory, unsigned or associated with suspicious activity. | Quarantine it with Defender and investigate its publisher, hash and process relationships. |
How to fix psi.exe errors safely
1. Identify the file before replacing anything
Write down the full path, publisher, version, signature status and hash. Do not download a replacement psi.exe from an unofficial executable or “DLL download” site. A replacement with the right filename can still be altered, outdated or malicious.
If the file is outside the expected Secunia directory, or a signature that should be present is absent or invalid, disconnect from untrusted networks if appropriate, run Defender and quarantine the file when Defender identifies it as a threat. Do not restore a quarantined copy merely to make the error disappear.
2. Remove the discontinued PSI program
For most home users, removing PSI is the correct resolution because its consumer service has been discontinued.

- In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (the label may appear as Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Search for Secunia PSI or Personal Software Inspector, open its menu and select Uninstall.
- On Windows 7 or when Settings does not list it, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, select the PSI entry and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows and check whether the error has gone.
Do not delete an arbitrary file named psi.exe before confirming that it belongs to PSI. After uninstalling, check Task Manager → Startup apps (or the Startup tab in older Windows versions). Disable or remove only a leftover entry that clearly points to the Secunia PSI directory. If the reference is in Task Scheduler, verify the task’s action and publisher before deleting it. Avoid broad registry-cleaning operations that could remove unrelated application entries.
3. Scan for unwanted software
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates and select Check for updates.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it.
- Review the result and quarantine anything Defender identifies. Record the detected file path and detection name.
- If suspicious software survives or repeatedly recreates psi.exe, choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). Save open work first; Windows restarts to perform the scan outside the normal desktop environment.
After the scan, recheck Task Manager and the startup list. A clean scan does not make an incorrectly located or unsigned legacy file trustworthy, so retain the path and signature checks.

4. Repair Windows components when the problem is broader
Use the built-in servicing tools when psi.exe errors occur alongside damaged Windows components, other missing system files or repeated application failures. Open Command Prompt as administrator: search for Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Run DISM first, then System File Checker:
Best Value
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component source used for servicing. SFC scans protected system files and can replace corrupted copies. These commands repair Windows components; they do not reinstall the discontinued Secunia PSI program and will not make an untrusted copy of psi.exe legitimate.
Allow each command to finish before starting the next one. Restart Windows after the commands complete, then test the application or startup behavior that produced the original message. If the error is still present, return to the path and startup-owner checks rather than repeatedly running repair commands against an unrelated executable.
5. Reinstall only for a verified legacy requirement
Some organizations may retain a historical workflow that specifically depends on PSI. In that case, obtain installation media only from a verifiable vendor archive or the organization’s approved software repository. Validate the installer and installed executable’s digital signature and hash before running it, and isolate the installation from normal software-update expectations because the consumer product is no longer supported.

For an ordinary personal computer, reinstalling an end-of-life security-inspection utility is usually less useful than updating the applications it originally monitored or removing PSI and its startup references. Never use a random copy of psi.exe to satisfy a missing-file dialog.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing the appropriate remedy
The safest option depends on what your checks establish. These remedies differ in trust, purpose and reversibility:
Quick Recap
| Remedy | Primary purpose | Trust and risk considerations | Support status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Path, signature and hash verification | Determine whether the executable is the historical PSI file or a look-alike. | Low change risk; preserves evidence before removal. | Uses Windows properties and a reputable multi-engine service. |
| Uninstall PSI and remove its verified startup entry | Stop obsolete launch attempts and missing-file messages. | Reversible only by reinstalling; remove only entries confirmed to belong to PSI. | Appropriate for discontinued consumer software. |
| Defender full or offline scan | Address malware or potentially unwanted software. | Quarantines detected items; review detections before restoring anything. | Built into supported Windows editions with current security intelligence. |
| DISM followed by SFC | Repair corruption in Windows components and protected system files. | Built-in servicing operation; it does not validate or replace third-party PSI files. | Microsoft-provided Windows maintenance workflow. |
| Verified legacy reinstall | Support a documented workflow that still requires PSI. | Highest maintenance burden; validate provenance and isolate the unsupported software. | PSI itself is discontinued, so ordinary consumer support should not be expected. |
What to do when the error remains
- The file is in the Secunia folder and signed: finish uninstalling PSI, remove its confirmed startup reference and restart. Keeping a dormant end-of-life program provides little practical benefit.
- The file is elsewhere or unsigned: treat it as an untrusted look-alike until Defender and hash analysis establish otherwise. Do not replace it from a download site.
- Only a stale pop-up remains: inspect Startup apps, Task Scheduler and the uninstaller list for a Secunia reference. Remove the specific reference after verifying its command path.
- Other Windows programs also fail: run the elevated DISM and SFC sequence, then investigate broader software or disk problems instead of focusing exclusively on psi.exe.
- Defender detects a threat: follow the quarantine and offline-scan result, change important passwords from a known-clean device if warranted, and seek professional incident-response help for a managed or business computer.
