Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →pseint.exe is the Windows program file for PSeInt, an open-source application that teaches programming logic through pseudocode. A file with that name is not automatically safe: trust it only when it came from the official PSeInt project, matches the project’s published hash, and passes a sensible security check. The project page currently lists Windows release 20250314; its installer and portable package support Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11.
What pseint.exe does
PSeInt is an educational tool for writing and running pseudocode before learning a full programming language. On Windows, the installed application includes an executable commonly identified as pseint.exe. The project also publishes a portable Windows package that starts with wxPSeInt.exe, so seeing that filename in a portable folder is normal.

PSeInt is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2 and the project publishes its source code. The official download page lists release 20250314. Its Windows download is shown as approximately 9.8 MB, while the installation guide describes the corresponding installer as about 10.2 MB; that small difference is normal rounding between pages and packaging views. The portable ZIP is described as about 12.5 MB.
What the current release information means
The installation guide identifies the 20250314 build as updated March 14, 2025 and recommends 64-bit Windows where available. It lists Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11 support. The release number is useful when checking a download: a filename such as pseint-w64-20250314.exe should agree with the version shown on the official project page. Do not assume that a similarly named executable from another site is the same build.

The installer and portable archive are two distribution formats for the same learning application, not two unrelated programs. The installer can integrate with Windows, while the portable archive keeps its files in one directory. In either format, PSeInt is intended for creating and practicing algorithms, not for providing a Windows system service. If a file called pseint.exe is running from an unexpected temporary, email-attachment or download-cache folder, investigate its location and origin instead of relying on the filename.
Is pseint.exe safe?
Safety depends on provenance, not the filename. Malware can be given any name, including pseint.exe. An unmodified copy obtained from the official PSeInt project can be checked using the project’s download information, published hash and VirusTotal links. A copy from an unknown mirror, an email attachment or a peer-to-peer download should be treated as untrusted even if it opens normally.
Microsoft describes a SmartScreen “not commonly downloaded” or Application Reputation warning as a reputation signal, not a malware verdict. Its guidance says, “No – the Application Reputation warning is not an indication that the download is malicious.” Reputation can be limited for an uncommon or unsigned program, but you should still assess the source, digital signature and file hash before running it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Open-source licensing also does not make every redistributed copy safe. GPL v2 explains how the project may be shared and modified; it does not guarantee that a third-party mirror has preserved the original file. Treat the license, project page, hash and signature as separate checks.
Use this safety checklist
- Download from the official PSeInt project page on SourceForge, not a random EXE repository.
- Confirm that the release and filename match the project’s Windows instructions, such as
pseint-w64-20250314.exefor the documented 64-bit installer. - Compare the downloaded file’s SHA-256 (or other published) hash with the value shown by the project.
- Inspect the file’s digital signature: right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures if that tab is present.
- Use the VirusTotal link provided by the project as an additional signal. A detection is a reason to investigate, not a reason to disable protection.
- Keep Microsoft Defender real-time protection enabled while downloading and installing.
Check the hash in PowerShell
Save the installer without opening it. In PowerShell, run:
Get-FileHash "C:Pathpseint-w64-20250314.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Replace the path with the file’s actual location. Compare the resulting value character-for-character with the hash published on the official project page. A mismatch means the file is not the exact build represented by that hash; delete it and download a fresh copy from the official page. Do not “fix” a mismatch by turning off Defender.
Hash checking proves that the bytes match the published value; it does not by itself prove that you downloaded from the real project. Check the page address and download path first, then use the hash as an integrity test. If the project links to a VirusTotal report, make sure the report corresponds to the same release and file, rather than a similarly named upload.

Use the project’s official SourceForge download page and its installation guide. The project documents both an installer and a portable package, and it provides verification links because older Windows installers were sometimes incorrectly detected by antivirus software.

The official page lists the Windows EXE at roughly 9.8 MB. The guide lists the installer at approximately 10.2 MB and the portable ZIP at approximately 12.5 MB. These figures can vary slightly with page formatting and packaging, so a small difference is not automatically evidence of tampering. A materially different size, an unexpected publisher, or a missing verification path deserves investigation.
| Option | What you receive | Administrator rights | Shortcuts and file associations | Removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows installer | An EXE installer; the guide names pseint-w64-20250314.exe. |
Usually required when installing for all users or writing to protected folders. | Can create Start-menu or desktop shortcuts and register associations during setup. | Remove through Windows’ installed-apps or Programs and Features settings. |
| Portable ZIP | An archive that runs wxPSeInt.exe after extraction. |
Not required for normal use. | No system-wide registration unless you create shortcuts yourself. | Close PSeInt and delete the extracted folder. |
Install the EXE
- Download the Windows installer from the official project page and save it rather than opening it directly from the browser.
- Check the filename, publisher information, digital signature and published hash.
- Right-click the verified installer and choose Run as administrator only if Windows needs elevation for the selected installation location.
- Follow the setup wizard, keep the default location unless you have a reason to change it, and allow Windows to create shortcuts if useful.
- Launch PSeInt from the Start menu or its installation folder. If Windows displays a reputation warning, stop and complete the provenance and hash checks before deciding whether to continue.
Installing for all users generally writes to a protected Windows location and triggers an elevation prompt. On a personal computer, that is expected when you intentionally chose the official installer. On a managed school or workplace computer, an administrator may have policy rules that an elevation prompt cannot bypass; use the approved portable option or ask the administrator rather than attempting to circumvent policy.
Use the portable package
- Download the portable ZIP from the official project page.
- Right-click the ZIP, select Extract All, and extract it to a folder you can write to, such as a folder in your user profile or on a removable drive.
- Keep the extracted files together and start
wxPSeInt.exe. Do not move only the EXE out of the folder; supporting files may be required. - Create a shortcut manually if desired. To remove the portable copy, exit the program and delete its folder.
Portable does not mean anonymous or automatically malware-free. Verify the ZIP just as you would verify the installer. Keep the archive and extracted folder in a location protected from casual modification, especially when using a shared or removable drive.
Installer versus portable: which should you choose?
The installer is more convenient on a personal computer where you have administrator rights and want normal Start-menu integration. The portable package is the practical choice on a school, library or work computer where software installation is restricted. It also lets you test PSeInt without changing system-wide settings. Neither option is automatically safer than the other; source verification and hash checking matter for both.
Choose the installer when you want Windows shortcuts, conventional uninstall entries and a fixed installation location. Choose portable when you need to carry PSeInt between computers, cannot elevate permissions, or want removal to consist of closing the program and deleting one folder. Portable operation does not create the same system-wide file associations or Start-menu entries unless you make shortcuts yourself.
| Check | Official project download | Unverified third-party mirror |
|---|---|---|
| Publisher provenance | Documented by the PSeInt project. | May be unclear or altered. |
| Hash | Project publishes a value to compare. | Often absent or unrelated to the project build. |
| VirusTotal transparency | Project provides a checking path. | Any report may refer to a different file. |
| SmartScreen warning | Can still occur because the program is uncommon or unsigned. | Should be treated as a serious reason to stop until provenance is established. |
Why Windows shows pseint.exe errors
Most launch failures fall into a few categories:
- Missing Visual C++ runtime: Windows reports a missing
MSVCP120.dll,VCRUNTIME140.dllor a similar library when the required Microsoft runtime is absent or damaged. - Blocked or quarantined download: SmartScreen, Defender or another security product may stop an uncommon executable, especially an older build.
- Incomplete or modified download: A broken transfer or altered mirror can produce a hash mismatch, installer error or immediate crash.
- Permission restrictions: The installer cannot write to its destination, or a managed computer prevents installation.
- Architecture or compatibility mismatch: The application and runtime must be compatible with the Windows installation and the package you selected.
- Windows system-file damage: Broader operating-system corruption can cause DLL loading and application-startup failures even when PSeInt itself is intact.
The exact wording matters. A DLL-not-found dialog points toward a runtime dependency; “Windows protected your PC” points toward reputation handling; a file that disappears after download points toward quarantine. Record the path and timestamp before deleting anything so you can identify the responsible component.
How to fix pseint.exe problems
1. Record the exact message
Write down the complete wording, including the DLL name and any error code. “The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP120.dll was not found” requires a different remedy from “Windows protected your PC” or an application that opens and immediately closes. Avoid downloading an individual DLL from a random website; that can install an incompatible or tampered file.

If the error began immediately after downloading PSeInt, delete the installer and download it again from the official project page. Compare its hash and inspect its signature. If the second file still differs from the published hash, do not run it; the problem is with the file or download path, not a missing Windows setting.

3. Install the official Visual C++ Redistributable
For MSVCP120.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll and similar messages, use the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable download recommended by the PSeInt installation guide. Choose the package architecture that matches the application and your Windows environment. On a 64-bit system, a 32-bit application can still require the x86 runtime, so check the application package rather than assuming that “64-bit Windows” answers the question.
- Download the redistributable only from Microsoft’s official download page.
- Close PSeInt and other programs that may use the runtime.
- Run the installer and accept the license terms.
- If setup offers Repair, use it when the runtime is already present but damaged.
- Restart Windows if requested, then launch PSeInt again.
Installing a random DLL file into the PSeInt folder is not an equivalent fix and can create version conflicts. If the error names a particular runtime generation, install that Microsoft redistributable rather than assuming the newest package always supplies every older component.
4. Use the portable build when installation is blocked
If you lack administrator rights or the installer cannot write to its destination, download and extract the official portable ZIP and run wxPSeInt.exe. This avoids system-wide installation and is the project’s documented option for restricted computers. You still need to verify the ZIP’s source and published hash before opening it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Handle a SmartScreen warning carefully
- Choose the option that keeps the file blocked while you investigate; do not click through automatically.
- Confirm that the file came from the official project page, then compare its hash and inspect the publisher/signature information.
- Check the project’s VirusTotal link and review Microsoft Defender’s detection details.
- Only after those checks support authenticity should you use More info and, if appropriate, Run anyway.
Never normalize an override for an installer from an unknown mirror. A reputation warning is not proof of malware, but it is a prompt to verify context.
6. Check Defender’s quarantine and protection history
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Read the detection name and file path. Restore a file only when you have independently verified its official origin and hash; otherwise leave it quarantined and obtain a clean copy from the project.
7. Scan if you suspect compromise
Update Defender through Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates, then choose Scan options > Full scan. Do not disable real-time protection to make PSeInt launch.
Microsoft Safety Scanner is a manually started supplemental tool, not a replacement for Defender’s real-time protection. Microsoft says its download expires 10 days after download. After running it, detailed results are recorded in %SYSTEMROOT%debugmsert.log. Download a fresh copy when you need another scan so that its definitions are current.
8. Repair Windows system files when other programs fail too
If several applications report missing DLLs or Windows behaves abnormally, the issue may extend beyond PSeInt. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

Allow each command to finish, restart Windows, and test PSeInt again. These commands repair Windows component and system-file problems; they do not validate an installer downloaded from an untrusted source.
9. Reinstall cleanly if the verified program still will not start
- Back up any PSeInt work stored outside the installation folder.
- For an installed copy, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select PSeInt and choose Uninstall. Older Windows versions may use Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current official package again, verify it, and install it to a new folder. If permissions remain a problem, use the portable build instead.
10. Capture useful evidence for a persistent crash
Open Event Viewer by searching the Start menu, then go to Windows Logs > Application. Look for an error at the time PSeInt failed and note the faulting module, exception code and application path. Those details can distinguish a missing runtime from a security block or a broader Windows fault. Keep the original error text and the verified filename when asking the PSeInt project or a system administrator for help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Frequently asked questions
Is pseint.exe a virus?
Not when it is the authentic PSeInt executable obtained from the official project and its integrity checks agree. The name alone proves nothing. Verify the download page, release, signature, published hash and security scan before allowing it to run.
Recommended Free Tools
Why did Windows Defender block pseint.exe?
Defender or SmartScreen may block an uncommon, unsigned or older installer, and older PSeInt installers were sometimes incorrectly detected. Read the protection-history entry, verify the official source and hash, and keep the file quarantined if those checks fail. Do not disable protection simply to complete setup.
Can I run PSeInt without administrator rights?
Yes. Use the official portable ZIP, extract it to a folder you can write to, and launch wxPSeInt.exe. It does not require a normal system-wide installation, although a managed computer may still restrict execution by policy.
What is the difference between pseint.exe and wxPSeInt.exe?
pseint.exe is the usual executable associated with the installed Windows package. wxPSeInt.exe is the launcher named by the portable distribution. Seeing the latter inside an official extracted portable folder is expected.
Should I download MSVCP120.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll separately?
No. Install or repair the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official page. Stand-alone DLL download sites can provide altered or incompatible files and do not reliably repair the underlying runtime installation.
Is PSeInt free?
The project states that it is distributed under GNU GPL v2 and provides source code. The documented Windows installer and portable package are software downloads rather than paid boxed products. Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable used for the documented DLL fixes is also an official free download.
Best Value
How do I remove the portable version?
Exit PSeInt, remove any shortcut you created, and delete the extracted portable folder. There is normally no installed-app entry because the portable package does not perform a system-wide installation.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
If DLL, startup or general Windows problems remain, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional diagnostic shortcut that can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and provides an app-crash log. It complements antivirus protection rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial of at least two days, and then requires a subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is pseint.exe a virus?
An authentic PSeInt executable from the official project is not automatically malware, but the filename alone is not proof. Verify the source, release, digital signature, published hash and security scan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why did Windows Defender block pseint.exe?
SmartScreen or Defender may be reacting to an uncommon or unsigned program, and older installers were sometimes incorrectly detected. Check Protection history, verify provenance and hash, and do not disable protection to bypass the warning.
Can PSeInt run without administrator rights?
Yes. Download the official portable ZIP, extract it to a writable folder and launch wxPSeInt.exe.
How do I fix MSVCP120.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll errors?
Install or repair the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official download page. Do not obtain individual DLL files from random websites.
Where can I download PSeInt safely?
Use the official PSeInt SourceForge project page and its installation guide. Compare the release, filename and published hash before opening the installer or portable archive.
What is the difference between pseint.exe and wxPSeInt.exe?
pseint.exe is associated with the installed Windows package; wxPSeInt.exe is the launcher used by the official portable package.
The Bottom Line
pseint.exe is PSeInt’s Windows executable, not a verdict of safety by itself. Download the 20250314 build from the official project, verify its hash and signature, and keep Defender enabled. For missing MSVCP120.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll messages, install Microsoft’s matching Visual C++ Redistributable. If installation is blocked, use the verified portable ZIP and run wxPSeInt.exe. Treat unknown mirrors, unexplained hash mismatches and unverified SmartScreen overrides as reasons to stop.
