What Is Proton on Linux? How Steam’s Compatibility Layer Works

Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for Steam. It lets many games built for Windows run on Linux by combining a modified version of Wine with graphics translators such as DXVK and vkd3d-proton. Steam installs and launches the selected Proton build for you, so you can use the familiar Steam library instead of manually configuring a separate Windows-compatibility environment.

What Proton is—and what it is not

Valve describes Proton as a tool for the Steam client that allows Windows-exclusive games to run on Linux. Steamworks documentation calls it a compatibility layer built from modified Wine and high-performance graphics API implementations.

That distinction matters. Proton is not a Linux version of every Windows game, and it is not an emulator that recreates an entire Windows computer. It is a collection of translation and integration technologies that presents the Windows interfaces a game expects while connecting those requests to Linux services and drivers.

You normally do not need to install Wine separately to use Proton. Steam distributes Proton builds with the components and Steam-specific configuration needed to start games from your library. Wine is an important part of Proton, but Proton is the Steam-focused package around it.

  • Wine: supplies Windows API behavior and a Windows-like runtime environment on Linux.
  • DXVK: translates Direct3D 9, Direct3D 10 and Direct3D 11 rendering calls into Vulkan.
  • vkd3d-proton: provides Direct3D 12 translation through Vulkan.
  • Steam integration: manages installation paths, compatibility prefixes, launch behavior, runtime files and per-game settings.

When a game has a native Linux build, it can use Linux APIs directly. Proton instead allows the Windows build to run through this translation stack. That often expands the number of games available on Linux, but it also introduces title-specific variables that do not exist in a native port.

How Steam runs a Windows game through Proton

Launching a Proton game is a chain of handoffs rather than one single conversion. Steam selects a compatibility tool, creates or updates the game’s Windows-like environment, starts the executable, and routes graphics and system calls through the Linux stack.

1. Steam selects a Proton build

Steam includes multiple Proton versions. It can choose a default automatically, or you can select a particular build globally in Steam Play settings or for one game in that game’s Properties window. Different builds contain different Wine changes, graphics fixes and workarounds, so the version can affect whether a title starts and how it performs.

2. Wine maps Windows behavior to Linux

The game still makes Windows-style calls for files, processes, windows, input, networking and other services. Proton’s modified Wine layer implements those calls with Linux equivalents and supplies the runtime files the program expects. The result is a per-game environment commonly called a prefix. Steam handles that environment as part of normal installation and launching.

3. Direct3D calls are translated to Vulkan

Most modern Windows games use Microsoft Direct3D. Linux graphics drivers generally expose Vulkan or OpenGL instead. DXVK handles Direct3D 9, 10 and 11; vkd3d-proton handles Direct3D 12. Both target Vulkan, allowing the game to use the Linux GPU driver without requiring a native Linux renderer.

Translation is not identical to a native implementation. Shader compilation, driver behavior, synchronization and the game’s rendering techniques can affect frame-time consistency even when average frame rates appear acceptable.

4. Steam supplies game-specific integration

Proton also deals with Steam paths, launch parameters, runtime libraries and compatibility settings. This is why a Proton game can generally be installed, updated and started through the same Steam interface as a native title.

5. The game may need a specific workaround

Some games require a different Proton release, a launch option or a particular driver version. Steam lets you make those changes per title rather than changing the behavior of every game in your library.

Proton, Wine, DXVK and vkd3d-proton: the difference

Component Primary role What it handles
Proton Steam’s complete compatibility tool Combines modified Wine, graphics translators, Steam integration, prefixes and game-specific fixes.
Wine Windows API compatibility Maps Windows system and runtime behavior to Linux; it does not by itself provide Proton’s Steam packaging and defaults.
DXVK Direct3D-to-Vulkan translation Direct3D 9, 10 and 11 workloads.
vkd3d-proton Direct3D 12-to-Vulkan translation Direct3D 12 workloads.

These are related layers, not interchangeable names. Saying that a game “uses Wine” describes one part of the stack; saying it “runs through Proton” identifies the Steam-managed combination. DXVK and vkd3d-proton are graphics components inside that broader path.

How to enable Proton in Steam

The exact wording can vary slightly by Steam client release and desktop distribution, but the workflow is consistent.

  1. Install Steam. Use the package or repository supported by your 64-bit Linux distribution, then sign in and allow Steam to finish its runtime updates.
  2. Open compatibility settings. In Steam, open Settings and find Compatibility or Steam Play.
  3. Enable Proton for supported games. Turn on the option that enables Steam Play for titles Valve has marked as supported. Leave Steam’s default Proton choice enabled initially.
  4. Enable it for other titles when appropriate. A separate option allows Proton for games Steam has not marked as supported. This can make additional Windows games appear launchable, but an unmarked title may fail or require manual tuning.
  5. Install a game. Choose the Windows version in your library and install it normally. Steam downloads the game and the selected Proton runtime.
  6. Choose a Proton version for one game if needed. Right-click the game, select Properties, open Compatibility, check the option to force a specific compatibility tool, and select an installed Proton build.
  7. Test the default first. Start with the stable version Steam recommends. Move to Proton Experimental or another installed release only when current title reports, release notes or a launch failure indicate that a change is worthwhile.

Changing the Proton version does not automatically make every game compatible. It changes the translation code and workarounds used at launch, so keep notes on which version works for each title.

Hardware and Linux requirements

Proton depends heavily on the graphics stack. A game can fail before its window appears if Vulkan is missing, incomplete or incompatible with the required features.

  • Supported 64-bit distribution: Steam and the game need a Linux installation with working 64-bit libraries.
  • Current GPU driver: Valve recommends current proprietary NVIDIA drivers and recent Mesa/LLVM and Vulkan drivers for AMD and Intel graphics.
  • 32-bit Vulkan libraries: Many older games still contain 32-bit components. Install the 32-bit Vulkan packages required by your distribution in addition to the 64-bit driver.
  • Feature support: The GPU must expose the Vulkan capabilities required by the game, its Direct3D version and the selected Proton build.
  • Kernel configuration when documented: Valve’s requirements guidance discusses the vm.max_map_count setting for modern games that exceed a kernel’s default memory-map limit. Change it only when the game’s documentation or diagnostic output indicates that this limit is the problem.

Keeping Mesa or the proprietary NVIDIA stack current is usually more useful than repeatedly switching Proton versions when the underlying Vulkan driver is broken. Verify Vulkan first if multiple games fail at startup or show a missing-device error.

Will your Steam games work on Linux?

There is no universal yes or no. Compatibility is a per-game question, and Valve describes Proton as a work in progress. A title can work perfectly, work after a version change, run with graphical or media limitations, or fail completely.

Steam’s compatibility review can assign an Unsupported badge when it finds blocking Proton bugs or serious performance problems. The absence of that badge is not a guarantee for every hardware and software combination, while an unreviewed game can sometimes work well.

  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Factors that commonly decide the result

  • Game updates: A patch can add or remove a dependency, alter rendering behavior or break a previously working workaround.
  • Launchers: A separate Windows launcher may add authentication, overlays or update steps that do not behave like the game itself.
  • Copy protection: Some protection systems interfere with compatibility layers or block execution.
  • Anti-cheat: Support depends on the game developer’s configuration and the anti-cheat technology, not Proton alone.
  • Media codecs: Cutscenes, voice chat or video playback can fail independently of 3D rendering.
  • Graphics API: Direct3D 12 titles use a different path from Direct3D 9–11 titles and may have different driver requirements.
  • Driver and desktop session: Mesa or NVIDIA driver versions, Wayland versus X11 behavior, compositors and display features can affect results.
  • Proton release: A fix in a newer build can resolve one game while a regression affects another.

Before buying a game or changing hardware, check current, game-specific compatibility reports and read the recent comments rather than relying only on an old rating. Look for the tested Proton version, GPU and driver, multiplayer or anti-cheat status, cutscene behavior and any required launch options.

Native Linux build versus Proton

A native Linux build and a Proton run solve the same practical problem—playing on Linux—but they do so through different paths.

Consideration Native Linux build Windows build through Proton
Game coverage Limited to titles for which the developer ships a Linux version. Can make many Windows-only releases available.
Graphics path Uses the APIs implemented by the Linux port, commonly Vulkan or OpenGL. Uses Direct3D translation through DXVK or vkd3d-proton and Vulkan.
Performance consistency Avoids the Proton translation layer, but quality depends on the port and its maintenance. Can perform very well, but shader compilation, drivers and translation can affect frame times.
Launchers and anti-cheat Depends on the Linux build’s own support. Windows launchers and anti-cheat systems may require specific Proton or developer support.
Controllers, VR and media Depends on what the port implements and updates. May match the Windows release more closely, but individual features can still fail.
Updates Can lag behind the Windows release if the port is maintained separately. Usually follows the Windows release, with compatibility depending on Proton changes.
Manual tuning Often less translation-related tuning. Some titles need a Proton version change, launch option or driver adjustment.

There is no blanket winner. Choose the native build when it is actively maintained and supports the features you need; choose Proton when the Windows release has better coverage or the native port is unavailable. Evaluate the individual title, not just the label in the store.

Steam Deck and Proton

Steam Deck is a practical example of Proton’s intended experience. Valve’s Steam Deck booklet describes SteamOS as Linux-based and says that the Proton translation layer allows most Windows games to run on SteamOS without requiring developers to perform heavy porting work.

On a Deck, Steam manages much of the compatibility workflow behind the console-style interface. The same underlying variables still exist: a game can receive a compatibility rating, a particular Proton build can be preferred, and an update can change behavior. Deck verification is useful evidence for that device, but it is not a guarantee for every desktop GPU, driver or Linux distribution.

Troubleshooting Proton games

The game does nothing or immediately returns to Steam

  1. Confirm that the GPU’s Vulkan driver is installed and that the required 32-bit Vulkan libraries are present.
  2. Use the game’s Properties → Compatibility menu to try the stable Proton build recommended by Steam.
  3. If a recent update caused the failure, test another installed Proton release and check current reports for that title.
  4. Remove unnecessary launch options and test a clean start before adding workarounds.

Graphics are corrupted or the game selects the wrong renderer

Verify the driver first. If the game is more reliable with an OpenGL path, Valve documents this launch option:

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

It tells Proton to use WineD3D’s OpenGL-based renderer instead of Vulkan-based DXVK. This is a fallback for diagnosis or for hardware and driver combinations where Vulkan is the immediate problem; it is not automatically faster.

You need a log for a reproducible bug

Valve documents the following launch option:

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%

Launch the game with it enabled, reproduce the failure, and attach the resulting Proton log when requesting help. Remove or redact personal paths, account names and other identifying information before sharing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiplayer or a launcher fails while the game works

Treat this as a separate compatibility problem. Check the game’s anti-cheat and launcher status, because a successful graphics start does not prove that authentication, matchmaking, overlays or copy-protection components are supported.

What to remember

  • Proton is Valve’s Steam-managed way to run many Windows games on Linux.
  • It combines modified Wine with Vulkan-based graphics translation: DXVK for Direct3D 9–11 and vkd3d-proton for Direct3D 12.
  • You normally select Proton in Steam rather than installing Wine separately.
  • Steam provides multiple Proton versions and per-game compatibility settings.
  • Compatibility is title-specific and can change with game updates, drivers and Proton releases.
  • A current Vulkan-capable driver, including required 32-bit libraries, is central to reliable results.
