It can be the legitimate Precomp command-line utility, which precompresses zLib/Deflate and GIF data, but malware can use the same filename. Treat the file as untrusted until you verify its full path, publisher, digital signature, hash, and origin. Scan it with Microsoft Defender before restoring, allowing, or deleting it; if a legitimate parent application is crashing, repair that application instead of downloading a replacement executable from a random site.
What precomp.exe does
Precomp is a command-line precompressor. Its purpose is to process files containing zLib/Deflate streams and GIF data, producing a .pcf file that can subsequently be compressed with a stronger algorithm. That function is associated with archive, repacking, and some software-distribution workflows rather than with Windows itself.

A Windows Precomp 0.4.2 build is listed by the WindowsSoftwares project on SourceForge with a file date of August 6, 2020. Independent file-information references also associate the name with “Command Line Precompressor” and, in some cases, µTorrent or repacking software. Those references are not Microsoft documentation, so an association with a familiar application is only a clue, not proof that a particular copy is genuine.
Windows does not require precomp.exe to start, log on, display the desktop, or provide core operating-system services. If you remove an application that installed it, Windows itself should continue to run; the application may lose an archive or unpacking feature, however.

Is precomp.exe safe?
The filename alone cannot answer that question. A legitimate utility exists, and a malicious executable can copy the same name. Microsoft’s malware criteria explain that unknown software has greater risk until it is analyzed; software can later be classified as malware or potentially unwanted software. Several malware-index entries list different hashes for files named precomp.exe under %USERPROFILE%AppDataRoamingWinRARPrecomp. Those entries show that malicious samples have reused the name and that this location deserves careful inspection, but they do not prove that every file in that directory is malicious.
Use the complete path and provenance to decide what you have. A copy installed as part of a program you deliberately obtained, with a matching publisher signature and a clean Defender result, is materially different from an unsigned copy launched from a temporary or user-profile folder that you cannot explain. No authoritative statistic establishes what percentage of files named precomp.exe are legitimate, so third-party “probability” or heuristic percentages should not be treated as population measurements.

Why precomp.exe errors happen
Reported symptoms include “Command Line Precompressor has stopped working,” “precomp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close,” and access-violation errors. These messages describe a process failure, not a universal diagnosis. Independent file-information pages are useful for matching wording, but they do not establish a single cause, a universal fix, or whether a given copy is malicious.
Several situations can produce the same symptom:
- The parent archive or repacking application is damaged, outdated, or incompatible with the file it is processing.
- The executable was partially removed, replaced, or quarantined, leaving the parent application with a broken reference.
- Windows security protection is blocking an untrusted or modified executable.
- The file is a malicious or unwanted program masquerading as the utility.
- An access violation occurs when the process receives invalid data or encounters a damaged installation; the message itself does not identify which of these occurred.
Because the filename is reused, troubleshooting must begin with identification and scanning rather than with a blind reinstall of precomp.exe.

How to identify the copy on your PC
- Find the running file. Open Task Manager, locate
precomp.exeon the Processes or Details tab, right-click it, and choose Open file location. If it is not running, search File Explorer for the filename and record every copy you find. - Record the path before changing anything. Copy the complete folder path and note which application opens or launches it. A path inside a recognized program’s installation directory has different implications from an unexplained roaming or temporary path.
- Inspect file properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs. Check the company or publisher, product name, file description, version, modification date, and whether Windows reports a valid signature. A missing signature is a warning to investigate, not automatic proof of malware.
- Check the hash when a trusted vendor provides one. A cryptographic hash lets you compare the exact bytes with a copy supplied by the parent application’s official vendor. A mismatch means the files differ; it does not by itself prove maliciousness, because vendors can publish different builds.
- Look for the owning application. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), identify the program that installed or calls the file. Also check the program’s own installation folder and documentation.
- Do not run an unexplained copy to “test” it. Opening an unknown executable gives it an opportunity to run. Leave it untouched while you update protection and scan it.
Scan and contain precomp.exe safely
- Update Defender intelligence. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Check for updates and allow the security-intelligence update to complete.
- Run a full scan. In Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start it. Microsoft recommends a full scan when malware is suspected because it checks files throughout the computer rather than only the most common locations. Keep the PC powered on until the scan finishes.
- Follow the detection action. If Defender identifies the file or its parent program, choose Quarantine or Remove according to the result and your need for the associated application. Microsoft describes quarantine this way: “Quarantine moves the file to a safe location and blocks it so it can’t run on your PC.” Do not restore or allow a quarantined file merely because its filename looks familiar.
- Use Defender Offline when it returns. If the unwanted software persists, or Defender says the item is active and cannot be removed while Windows is running, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Scan options. Save your work first; the computer restarts and scans before the normal Windows session loads.
- Review protection history. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and read the detection name, affected path, and action. That record helps distinguish a blocked unwanted program from a false alarm and tells you whether a restart or additional scan is needed.
- Reboot and rescan if symptoms remain. After a removal or offline scan, restart Windows and run another scan if the process reappears. A recurring process can indicate that its parent application, startup entry, or scheduled task remains installed.
Remove an unwanted precomp.exe
Do not delete an executable first when you do not know which application owns it. Removing only the file can leave broken shortcuts, services, or startup entries and may cause the parent program to reinstall it.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Apps & features to uninstall the parent application you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Restart Windows and run a full Defender scan. If the file is still present or returns, run Defender Offline.
- Check the original folder after the application is removed. If an empty folder or leftover file remains, scan it first and delete it only after Windows Security reports no active detection and you are certain no needed program uses it.
- Review browser downloads, email attachments, and recently installed software that may have introduced the file. Remove the associated unwanted program through its normal uninstaller rather than using a random “cleaner” executable.
Microsoft advises downloading applications from trusted sources and keeping protection up to date. Do not download a stand-alone replacement precomp.exe from an arbitrary file site; an executable with the right name can still be modified or malicious.

Repair a legitimate parent application that crashes
If the path, signature, provenance, and scan all point to a legitimate compression or repacking program, repair the program that calls Precomp. The utility is usually a component, not an independent Windows feature.
- Close the parent application. End its process in Task Manager if it remains open, then retry only with a known-good input file. Record whether the failure happens with every file or only one archive.
- Install the parent program’s current update. Use the vendor’s built-in updater or its official download page. Do not substitute an executable copied from a third-party repository.
- Use the vendor’s repair option. Some installers expose Repair or Modify in Installed apps. Choose that option when available so dependencies and registration are restored together.
- Reinstall from the official source if repair is unavailable. Uninstall the parent application, restart Windows, download the installer again from the official vendor or Microsoft Store source, and install it. Confirm that the replacement file’s publisher and signature match the vendor before running it.
- Retest with a small, known-good file. If the program works with a clean sample but fails on one archive, the input may be damaged or use a format the application cannot process. If it fails everywhere after a trusted reinstall, keep the crash details for the application vendor rather than replacing system files.
- Restore only with evidence. If Defender quarantined a file that you can verify came from the legitimate parent installer, compare its path, signature, hash, and vendor provenance first. Restore it only when those checks and the vendor’s support guidance agree; otherwise leave it quarantined.
What the common error messages mean
“Command Line Precompressor has stopped working”
Windows detected that the process terminated unexpectedly. The wording does not say whether the executable is genuine, whether the input was damaged, or whether the parent application is broken. Identify and scan the file, then update or reinstall the owning program if it is legitimate.
“precomp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”
This is another generic crash notification. It confirms a failure during execution but supplies no malware verdict. Use the path, signature, hash, scan result, and parent-application checks rather than relying on the message alone.
Access-violation errors
An access violation indicates that the process attempted an invalid memory operation. It can arise from a damaged or incompatible program build or from problematic input, but the text does not identify the cause. Treat a copy from an unknown location as a security issue first; for a verified component, repair the parent installation and test again.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the name is proof. Both legitimate and malicious files can be called
precomp.exe. - Deleting before scanning. You lose evidence about the file’s path, hash, and detection and may break a program you still need.
- Restoring because an application asks for it. A prompt to restore a quarantined file is not proof that it is safe.
- Downloading a replacement from a file-collection site. The replacement may be modified, outdated, or bundled with unwanted software.
- Quoting third-party heuristic percentages. No authoritative prevalence statistic establishes how often this filename is legitimate or malicious.
- Confusing a crash with an infection. A crash message is a symptom; only path, provenance, signature, hash, and security analysis can support a safety decision.
Bottom line
precomp.exe is not part of Windows, but a legitimate Precomp utility exists. Decide what your copy is by tracing its full path and parent application, checking publisher and signature details, comparing a hash when the vendor supplies one, and scanning with current Microsoft Defender protection. Quarantine or remove a detected threat, use Defender Offline if it persists, and uninstall the owning application when you do not recognize or need it. For a verified utility that keeps crashing, update or reinstall the parent program from its official source instead of downloading a loose executable.
