What Is Polymetallic-Nodule Oxidation, and Can It Happen Outside a Lab?

Yes. Polymetallic-nodule oxidation is a natural part of how many deep-ocean nodules form. Oxygen in seawater or sediment porewater helps convert dissolved iron and manganese into poorly soluble oxide and oxyhydroxide minerals, which precipitate and build layers around a nucleus. This established process occurs on the seafloor, not only in laboratory vessels.

It is important not to confuse that chemistry with the newer “dark oxygen” claim. The ordinary formation process consumes oxygen while oxidizing dissolved metals. The disputed claim says nodules may cause oxygen to appear in darkness, potentially through seawater electrolysis. Reported oxygen increases have been challenged, and the proposed mechanism is not established.

What “oxidation” means in a polymetallic nodule

In this context, oxidation describes a chemical change in dissolved metal species when they react in an oxygen-bearing environment. Iron and manganese dissolved in seawater or sediment porewater can be transformed into minerals that dissolve less readily. Those iron- and manganese-oxide or oxyhydroxide particles settle onto an existing nucleus and form another thin layer.

The nucleus may be a small rock fragment, tooth, bone fragment or another hard particle. Over very long periods, repeated precipitation and recrystallization produce a rounded nodule. Oxidation therefore refers to the metals’ chemical state and mineral deposition; it does not mean that every nodule generates free molecular oxygen (O2).

The Smithsonian Ocean overview describes this process as one part of a broader formation cycle. The U.S. Geological Survey likewise characterizes ocean-floor ferromanganese nodules and crusts as mainly iron- and manganese-oxide minerals precipitated from seawater, with some nodules also receiving material from sediment porewater.

How nodules form naturally

Hydrogenetic growth from seawater

In hydrogenetic formation, dissolved metals in seawater immediately above the seafloor are oxidized and precipitate directly onto a nucleus. Because the supply comes from very dilute seawater, growth is extremely slow. Smithsonian Ocean gives a general rate of about 1–5 millimeters per million years for hydrogenetic nodules; that is an educational range, not a universal rate for every location.

Diagenetic growth in sediment porewater

Diagenetic formation occurs within or beneath seafloor sediment. Organic-matter decomposition and changing redox conditions mobilize manganese and iron in porewater. When that porewater encounters a more oxygenated zone, the metals can precipitate onto a nodule or be recycled through its outer layers. This setting can supply material faster than direct hydrogenetic precipitation.

Smithsonian Ocean reports diagenetic growth of up to 250 millimeters per million years. The figure is a broad source-level estimate, not a prediction for an individual nodule. Many natural nodules combine hydrogenetic and diagenetic contributions rather than fitting a single pure category.

Mixed growth and the surrounding seafloor

Nodules commonly occur as particles scattered across sediment-covered abyssal plains. They should not be confused with ferromanganese crusts: crusts form pavements on exposed rock, whereas nodules are discrete rounded bodies resting on or partly buried in sediment. The USGS description keeps those settings distinct even though both contain oxidized iron and manganese minerals.

Smithsonian Ocean reports nodule fields in the Atlantic, Indian, Southern and central Pacific oceans, commonly at depths of 3,960–5,790 meters (13,000–19,000 feet). Their presence in multiple ocean basins demonstrates that the relevant reactions take place under natural pressure, temperature and seawater conditions.

Formation setting Where the metals come from Role of oxidation General growth figure
Hydrogenetic Seawater above the seafloor Oxidizes dissolved iron and manganese so minerals precipitate on a nucleus About 1–5 mm per million years (Smithsonian Ocean; publication date not stated on the retrieved page)
Diagenetic Sediment porewater and redox cycling below the seafloor Precipitates metals when porewater conditions become more oxidizing Up to 250 mm per million years (Smithsonian Ocean; publication date not stated on the retrieved page)
Mixed Both seawater and porewater Alternates or combines the two pathways during a nodule’s history Not stated as a single universal rate

Mineral evidence that nodules are strongly oxidized

A 1984 study by D.Z. Piper, J.R. Basler and J.L. Bischoff analyzed deep-ocean nodules from the Guatemala Basin, the North Pacific and central Pacific seamounts. It reported that more than 98% of the manganese in those samples was Mn(IV), a highly oxidized form. The result is direct mineral-chemical evidence that the nodules contain manganese in an oxidized state, consistent with precipitation in oxygenated or repeatedly re-oxygenated environments. See the USGS Publications Warehouse record for the study.

That finding does not by itself identify every reaction that occurred during growth. A nodule can experience changing conditions as it is buried, exposed, or supplied by different fluids. It does establish that “oxidized manganese mineral” is a normal description of deep-ocean nodules, not a laboratory artifact.

Natural nodule oxidation versus “dark oxygen”

The two propositions answer different questions:

Question What is established or reported What remains uncertain
Does oxidation help form nodules? Yes. Dissolved iron and manganese can react with oxygen and precipitate as oxide or oxyhydroxide minerals in seawater and porewater. This is part of the accepted formation account. The exact balance between hydrogenetic, diagenetic and mixed reactions varies by nodule and location.
Do nodules produce oxygen in darkness? A 2024 study reported oxygen increases in benthic chambers and ex-situ incubations that the authors attributed to nodules. The causal role of nodules and the proposed electrolysis mechanism are disputed and not established.

In the first process, oxygen is a reactant that helps immobilize dissolved metals. In the second claim, oxygen would be a product accumulating without sunlight. Similar wording can make them sound related, but they involve opposite interpretations of oxygen’s role.

What the 2024 dark-oxygen paper reported

Sweetman and colleagues’ 2024 Nature Geoscience paper, titled “Evidence of dark oxygen production at the abyssal seafloor,” described in-situ benthic-chamber experiments in the NORI-D licence area of the Clarion–Clipperton Zone. Oxygen concentration in the chambers increased over two days, reaching more than three times background in the reported experiments. The authors also described ex-situ incubations that they attributed to polymetallic nodules.

The paper reported voltage potentials on nodule surfaces of up to 0.95 volts and proposed that seawater electrolysis might contribute to the oxygen signal. That is a hypothesis offered to explain the observations, not a demonstrated mechanism. A measured surface potential, by itself, does not prove that electrolysis generated the chamber oxygen.

The original article and its current status are available at Nature Geoscience. The reported chamber increase is an observation from that study; attributing it specifically to nodules is a separate causal step.

Why the dark-oxygen interpretation is disputed

Published methodological criticism

A 2025 article in Frontiers in Marine Science argued that the extraordinary claim lacked adequate support. It discussed concerns about study design, interpretation, earlier observations of oxygen fluxes and the proposed mechanism. The criticism does not erase the fact that oxygen changes were reported; it challenges whether nodules caused them and whether the measurements support electrolysis. Read the published critique at Frontiers in Marine Science.

Later reanalysis

A 2026 F1000Research article, revised through 18 September 2026, reanalyzed the benthic-experiment results and concluded that it found no established causal link between polymetallic nodules and the anomalous oxygen concentration increases. This is a published reanalysis, not a declaration that every question about the experiments has been permanently resolved. Its analysis is available at F1000Research.

Journal editorial status

As of 8 April 2026, the Nature Geoscience page for the original paper carried an editor’s note: “Readers are alerted that aspects of this article are subject to concerns that are being considered by the Editors. A further editorial response will follow the resolution of these issues.” The notice indicates an ongoing editorial review. It is not a completed retraction, so the paper should be described as contested rather than retracted.

Can polymetallic-nodule oxidation happen outside a laboratory?

Yes. The formation descriptions, the distribution of nodules across natural abyssal plains and the mineral analyses all concern seafloor materials formed in nature. No laboratory container is required: seawater supplies dissolved metals and oxidant, while sediment porewater creates additional chemical gradients. The reactions may be slow, spatially uneven and coupled to microbial and sedimentary processes, but they are natural geochemical processes.

What cannot be inferred from that answer is that nodules routinely generate oxygen in darkness. Natural oxidation of manganese and iron explains mineral accretion. It does not validate the separate claim that nodules split water or otherwise produce measurable O2 without light.

How to evaluate future dark-oxygen evidence

A clear assessment should keep four levels of evidence separate:

  1. Observation: Did oxygen concentration or flux change, and were the sensors calibrated and checked against blanks?
  2. Attribution: Is the change linked specifically to nodules rather than sediment disturbance, chamber chemistry, contamination or another process?
  3. Mechanism: Is there independent evidence that the proposed reaction, such as seawater electrolysis, occurred at the required rate?
  4. Reproducibility and review: Do independent field campaigns and controlled experiments reproduce the result, and how have journal editors addressed published concerns?

Applying those questions prevents a familiar mineral-forming reaction from being treated as proof of a much stronger oxygen-production claim.

Bottom line

Polymetallic-nodule oxidation is real, natural and central to the precipitation of iron- and manganese-bearing minerals on the deep-ocean floor. It occurs in seawater, sediment porewater and mixed environments, progressing over geological timescales. The idea that nodules themselves produce “dark oxygen” is a different and unsettled proposition: oxygen increases were reported in 2024, but the causal interpretation and electrolysis explanation have been challenged in later publications, with editorial concerns still under consideration as of April 2026.
