Playback-based CPM is the gross amount advertisers pay per 1,000 video playbacks in which at least one ad appeared. It is not a creator’s earnings per 1,000 views, and streaming 24/7 does not guarantee that ads will run or create a standard CPM. YouTube publishes no typical playback-based CPM benchmark specifically for continuous live streams.
What playback-based CPM measures
YouTube calculates playback-based CPM by dividing advertiser revenue by monetized playbacks and multiplying by 1,000. A monetized playback is one in which at least one ad impression was served. The metric describes advertiser spending, not the creator’s share.
That distinction matters because a playback can contain more than one ad. Playback-based CPM counts monetized playbacks; regular CPM counts individual ad impressions. A playback can also count as monetized if a viewer leaves during a pre-roll ad before the video itself begins, according to the YouTube Analytics API metric definitions.
How playback-based CPM differs from CPM and RPM
| Metric | What it counts | What it tells a creator |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | Advertiser cost per 1,000 individual ad impressions. | Advertiser cost associated with ad impressions, not creator take-home earnings. |
| Playback-based CPM | Advertiser cost per 1,000 playbacks where at least one ad appeared. | Advertiser spending associated with monetized playbacks, not all views and not creator earnings. |
| RPM | Creator revenue per 1,000 views, or engaged views where applicable in reporting. | A creator-focused revenue measure after YouTube’s share; it can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers. |
YouTube’s example shows why CPM and playback-based CPM can differ: across 5,000 video views, 1,000 playbacks had one ad and 500 had two, making 2,000 ad impressions but 1,500 monetized playbacks. With $7 in advertiser spending, CPM is $3.50 ($7 ÷ 2,000 × 1,000), while playback-based CPM is $4.67 ($7 ÷ 1,500 × 1,000). These are illustrative figures from YouTube, not a measured live-stream rate or earnings forecast. See YouTube Help’s explanation of ad revenue analytics.

Does running a 24/7 stream raise playback-based CPM?
Not by itself. A continuous schedule can accumulate viewing activity, but runtime does not set the rate advertisers pay or determine which playbacks carry ads. YouTube identifies seasonality, viewer geography and the distribution of available ad formats as factors that can affect CPM. A stream’s ad slots are not guaranteed to serve an ad.
A playback may have no ad for several reasons: monetization is off, the content is not advertiser-friendly, no suitable ad is available, the viewer has recently seen an ad, or the viewer uses YouTube Premium. Audience and inventory conditions also matter. YouTube describes live-stream ad formats and their limitations in its live-stream monetization guidance; check current YouTube Help for operational details.

Why you cannot multiply CPM by total views to estimate earnings
Playback-based CPM applies to monetized playbacks, not every view. It is a gross advertiser-cost measure, while creator revenue reflects YouTube’s revenue share and may include other sources. Multiplying playback-based CPM by total stream views therefore uses the wrong denominator and treats advertiser spending as creator income.
To assess what a channel earns, consider estimated revenue and RPM alongside monetized playbacks and playback-based CPM. RPM is more useful for understanding revenue per view, while playback-based CPM helps describe advertiser spending on playbacks that actually showed ads.

How to compare your channel’s results fairly
Compare periods using the same date window, then note changes that could explain a different result:
- Viewer geography: ad-market competition differs by location.
- Time of year: advertiser bids can rise or fall seasonally.
- Ad format mix: formats can have different CPMs.
- Monetized-playback share: total views can change differently from the number of playbacks that carried ads.
- Creator revenue measures: pair playback-based CPM with RPM or estimated revenue to distinguish advertiser pricing from creator earnings.

Is there a typical 24/7 YouTube playback-based CPM?
No authoritative typical figure specific to 24/7 YouTube live streams is established in the cited official material. Avoid treating a general dollar range or YouTube’s illustrative $4.67 calculation as a normal rate for continuous streams. A meaningful channel-specific comparison needs a defined period and context, including geography and the share of playbacks that were monetized.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 stream is made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo keeps it running on YouTube from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
