photoshop.exe is the Windows program file that launches Adobe Photoshop. A copy installed by Adobe in the Photoshop program folder is normally legitimate, but the filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe. The folder, digital signature, installation source, scan result and update behavior all matter.
Crashes and launch errors usually respond to a short sequence: restart Photoshop and Windows, install Photoshop and Windows updates, reset preferences, isolate plug-ins and fonts, test the GPU setting, check the error log and reinstall only through Adobe Creative Cloud when necessary. Do not download a replacement photoshop.exe from an “EXE fixer” site or delete the file as a first step.

What photoshop.exe is and where it belongs
Photoshop uses an executable file named photoshop.exe to start the application and coordinate its Windows processes. Adobe’s archived troubleshooting material identifies a 32-bit copy in an Adobe Photoshop version folder under Program Files (x86). Newer releases can use a different folder and bitness, so an expected path varies by Photoshop edition and installation method.
The name is therefore an identifier, not a security verdict. A file can be renamed, copied or replaced by another program. Evaluate it with the installation path and provenance: did you install Photoshop through Adobe Creative Cloud, does the file sit with the rest of that installation, and does Windows identify Adobe as the signer?

- Expected context: an Adobe Photoshop installation directory selected by Creative Cloud or an Adobe installer.
- Variable details: the version folder, 32-bit or 64-bit build and exact drive letter can differ between releases and custom installations.
Is photoshop.exe safe?
A copy installed through Adobe in a Photoshop directory you recognize is consistent with a legitimate installation. A copy that arrived in a crack, torrent, unofficial repack, email attachment or an unrelated temporary folder deserves suspicion until you verify it. Microsoft advises obtaining applications from trusted sources, keeping security intelligence current and running a full Microsoft Defender scan when unwanted software is a concern.
There is no reliable safety conclusion from the filename alone. An absent or invalid signature is a warning to investigate, not automatic proof of malware; a valid-looking name is not proof of authenticity either. Treat unexpected behavior, repeated security detections or an inability to update as additional evidence that the copy may have been altered.
Verify the running file
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If Photoshop is running, expand its entry, right-click the process and choose Open file location. - Check the complete path. It should be inside an Adobe Photoshop installation that you knowingly installed, rather than a download, crack, temporary or system directory.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties and open Digital Signatures. Look for an Adobe signer and inspect the signature details. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to stop and investigate before launching the file again.
- Open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, update protection intelligence and run a Full scan. Allow the scan to quarantine or remove a detection rather than restoring it without understanding the alert.
- If the copy is unexpected, do not download another
photoshop.exefrom a third-party repair site. Uninstall the untrusted Photoshop installation and reinstall Photoshop from Adobe Creative Cloud after the scan completes.

Why photoshop.exe crashes, freezes or will not start
A Windows error that names photoshop.exe identifies the process that failed, not necessarily the component that caused the failure. Photoshop can stop during startup because of damaged preferences, an incompatible plug-in, a bad font or stale font cache, a graphics processor or driver problem, missing permissions, an incomplete update or a damaged installation.

Plug-ins and fonts
If Photoshop starts only when optional and third-party plug-ins are skipped, one of those plug-ins is a likely cause. A bad font or stale font cache can cause launch crashes, hangs and performance problems even when the executable itself is intact.
GPU and driver compatibility
Photoshop uses the graphics processor for supported drawing and display features. A driver update, an unsupported GPU, a recent Windows change or a conflict with another graphics application can make the process fail soon after launch or when opening a document.
Damaged preferences or installation files
Preferences preserve settings that can become incompatible after an upgrade. A damaged installation, interrupted update or incorrect folder permissions can produce a general “program error” even though the file is genuine.

Step-by-step fixes for photoshop.exe errors
Work through these steps in order. After each change, launch Photoshop and repeat the action that previously failed. Keep documents, custom brushes, actions, plug-in installers and other user files backed up before resetting settings or removing caches.
1. Close Photoshop completely and restart
- Save work if the application still responds. Use File > Exit; if it is frozen, open Task Manager, select Photoshop and choose End task.
- Close the Creative Cloud desktop app as well. Wait a few seconds so background Adobe processes can finish.
- Restart Windows and try Photoshop again. A restart clears a locked process and completes some pending file operations without changing your installation.
2. Install Photoshop and Windows updates
Open the Creative Cloud desktop app, select Updates and install the Photoshop update offered for your account. Then open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates and restart when Windows requests it. Adobe’s current crash guidance places updates early in the troubleshooting sequence because fixes for known crashes, plug-in compatibility and graphics support are delivered through these channels.
Do not rely on an old installer or an executable copied from another PC. If Creative Cloud cannot update the installation, record the error, repair the Creative Cloud installation through Adobe’s supported process or uninstall and reinstall Photoshop from the same official app.
3. Reset Photoshop preferences
Preferences can be reset from Photoshop’s preferences interface when the program opens. Look under Edit > Preferences > General for the reset-preferences command or the option to reset preferences on quit, then restart Photoshop. If Photoshop will not stay open long enough to use the menu, close Photoshop and Creative Cloud, back up your Photoshop settings folder, and rename the version-specific settings folder so Photoshop creates a clean one at the next launch.
Renaming is safer than deleting: you can restore the old folder if the reset does not help. Custom workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, actions and other settings may need to be imported again, so preserve the backup until the application is stable.
4. Launch while skipping optional and third-party plug-ins
- Close Photoshop.
- Hold Shift while launching Photoshop.
- When Photoshop asks whether to skip optional and third-party plug-ins, confirm the choice.
- If the application now starts, open Help > About Plug-ins or your plug-in manager and disable recently installed or updated additions. Re-enable them one at a time, restarting after each change, until the faulty plug-in is identified.
Keep a copy of the plug-in installer and check that its version supports your Photoshop release before reinstalling it. Do not remove Adobe components merely because a third-party plug-in is listed beside them.

5. Rebuild the Adobe font cache
Adobe documents a stale or damaged font cache as a possible cause of startup crashes, hangs and performance problems. To rebuild it on Windows:
- Exit Photoshop and the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- In File Explorer, enter
C:Users[user name]AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop <version>. Replace the bracketed account name and version text with the folders on your PC. - Delete the folder named
CT Font Cache. - Empty the Recycle Bin and restart Windows before launching Photoshop.
Back up the folder first if you want a recovery option. If the cache is recreated and the crash returns whenever a particular font is used, remove that font through Windows’ font settings and obtain a compatible copy from its legitimate source.
6. Test the graphics processor
When the error appears during drawing, zooming, opening a document or immediately after launch, isolate the GPU:

- Clear Use Graphics Processor.
- Select OK and restart Photoshop.
If the crash disappears, the executable is probably not the root cause. Check whether your graphics card supports the Photoshop release, install the current driver supplied by the GPU manufacturer or Windows Update, and review Adobe’s compatibility guidance before re-enabling the setting. If the error remains with GPU use disabled, continue with plug-in, font, preference and installation checks instead of assuming the graphics card is at fault.
7. Check permissions and security software interference
Photoshop must be able to read its program files and write to your user profile, temporary folders and document locations. Confirm that your Windows account can access the Photoshop installation and the Adobe folders under AppData. Avoid permanently granting broad administrator rights; instead, test with the normal account and correct the specific folder or Controlled folder access rule that blocks Photoshop.
If security software reports a detection, follow its quarantine instructions and investigate the exact path. Do not create an exclusion for an unverified photoshop.exe. A clean Defender scan does not replace checking provenance, and an exclusion can hide a modified executable.

8. Read the Photoshop program-error log

The versioned folder name can differ on newer releases. Open the matching Photoshop settings folder and look for PSErrorLog.txt. Copy the entries made at the time of the failure before changing more settings. Plug-in names, font modules, GPU initialization messages and access errors can point to the next step; a log that contains only a generic termination message may not identify the cause by itself.
9. Reinstall Photoshop from Creative Cloud
Use reinstalling only after updates, preference reset and component isolation. In Creative Cloud, open the Photoshop menu, choose Uninstall and follow the prompts. Keep personal settings and plug-ins only if you have verified backups and want to restore them; carrying damaged settings back into a new installation can reproduce the failure.
Restart Windows, install Photoshop again from Creative Cloud and launch it before adding plug-ins, custom fonts or restored preferences. Test a new blank document first, then add your normal components individually. This clean baseline distinguishes a damaged installation from a problem in user data or an extension.

Keeping Photoshop current is a security requirement as well as a crash fix. Adobe’s October 13, 2026 bulletin APSB26-158 reports high- and medium-rated vulnerabilities that could allow arbitrary code execution or application denial of service. It lists these affected releases and fixes:

The same bulletin lists CVSS base scores of 8.2 for CVE-2026-95639 and 7.8 for CVE-2026-104347. Scores describe the severity of the vulnerabilities; they do not indicate that every installation is compromised.
Adobe’s September 8, 2026 bulletin APSB26-130 also advised updating through Creative Cloud and listed Photoshop 2026 version 27.6 and earlier and Photoshop 2025 version 26.11.6 and earlier as affected. Those earlier thresholds are superseded by the later bulletin. Version numbers are time-sensitive, so use the update offered by Creative Cloud and consult Adobe’s current security bulletin rather than treating these dated numbers as a permanent rule.
Adobe’s wording in APSB26-158 is: “Adobe recommends users update their installation to the newest version via the Creative Cloud desktop app’s update mechanism.”

Do not delete a legitimate photoshop.exe to fix a crash. It is the executable Photoshop needs to start; removing it can turn a recoverable configuration problem into a broken installation and will not repair a bad plug-in, font, preference or graphics driver.
If the file is in an unexpected directory or a security product detects it, quarantine it through Windows Security, preserve the detection details and uninstall the untrusted application. After scanning, reinstall Photoshop from Adobe Creative Cloud. Never replace the file with a download from a DLL or “EXE fixer” website, because you cannot reliably verify what that replacement contains or whether it matches your Photoshop build.

Preventing repeat errors
- Install Photoshop and plug-ins from their official publishers, and keep a record of which plug-in or font was added before a crash began.
- Let Creative Cloud and Windows install security and compatibility updates instead of postponing them indefinitely.
- Back up preferences, actions, brushes, plug-in installers and important documents before resetting settings or reinstalling.
- Keep graphics drivers current, but create a restore point or note the previous version so you can roll back a driver that introduces a new fault.
- Use a standard Windows account for daily work and grant elevated permissions only for a specific installer or folder repair when required.
- Run periodic full security scans and investigate unexpected executable paths rather than trusting a familiar filename.
