In earth science, it is ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. In gaming, Permafrost is a story-driven survival sandbox set in a fictional, frozen post-apocalyptic world. The game uses cold, storms, scavenging, crafting and shelter-building as survival pressures; it does not claim to simulate the scientific behavior of real permafrost.
This guide explains the real feature first, then separates it from the PC game’s advertised mechanics, co-op options, progression systems and hardware requirements.

What permafrost means in earth science
Permafrost is ground—soil or rock, including any ice and organic material in it—that stays at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. The definition is based on measured ground temperature and duration. It does not require a particular amount of ice, so permafrost can be ice-rich or nearly ice-free. “Permanently frozen” is misleading: the term describes a condition that has lasted at least two years, not ground that can never thaw.
The frozen ground may lie beneath a surface layer that changes seasonally. That distinction is essential when reading maps, monitoring a site or interpreting a thaw-related hazard.

The active layer
The active layer is the surface soil above permafrost. It thaws during the warmer part of the year and freezes again seasonally. Its depth is not a universal fixed value; vegetation, snow, moisture, soil type, shade, surface disturbance and weather all affect how far seasonal heat penetrates.
Because frozen ground can restrict drainage, water may collect near the surface. Wetlands, ponds, lakes and marshes can therefore occur in permafrost terrain even where the surrounding climate appears dry. A wet surface does not, by itself, prove that all the ground beneath it is thawing.
Thickness and geographic continuity
Permafrost is highly variable. The National Snow and Ice Data Center reports thicknesses from less than 1 meter to greater than 1,500 meters. It also describes four broad distribution categories: continuous, discontinuous, sporadic and isolated. These categories describe how much of the ground in a landscape is underlain by permafrost; they do not mean that every location within a cold region has identical frozen ground.
| Feature | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Temperature definition | Ground at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years |
| Ice requirement | No minimum ice content; permafrost may be ice-free |
| Thickness | Reported by NSIDC from less than 1 meter to greater than 1,500 meters |
| Distribution | Continuous, discontinuous, sporadic or isolated |
| Seasonal surface zone | The active layer thaws and refreezes above the permafrost |
What happens when permafrost thaws?
Thaw is the progressive loss of ground ice as heat moves into the soil or rock. The consequences depend on ice content, slope, water, vegetation, snow, geology and human disturbance. A site with little excess ice may show modest settlement, while an ice-rich slope can deform rapidly when the ice melts.

Thermokarst and surface settlement
When excess ground ice melts, the ground can settle unevenly. This creates irregular depressions and hummocky terrain known as thermokarst. Settlement can alter the route water takes across the surface, creating new ponds or draining existing ones.
Slumps, detachments and unstable slopes
Thaw slumps and active-layer detachments occur when thaw weakens or removes supporting frozen material, particularly on slopes. The National Park Service monitoring guidance identifies slope instability and thaw settlement as hazards that can affect natural terrain and built structures. Not every thawing site develops a slump: local ice distribution, slope angle, drainage and vegetation determine the form of failure.
Other visible indicators
- Degraded ice-wedge polygons: polygonal ground patterns can lose their sharp relief as wedge ice melts.
- Thermokarst lakes: depressions may fill with water after settlement, although some lakes can also drain as channels develop.
- “Drunken forest” trees: trees tilt when uneven ground movement disrupts their root zone.
- Drainage changes: blocked or newly opened pathways can redirect surface water.
- Infrastructure damage: roads, foundations, pipelines and other structures can deform when their frozen support settles.
Why two nearby sites can respond differently
Useful comparison variables include ground temperature and depth, ice content, continuity, active-layer depth, surface moisture, drainage, slope, vegetation, snow cover, geology and human disturbance. The National Park Service monitoring chapter, based on work by Osterkamp and Jorgenson (2009), treats climate, terrain, hydrology, vegetation, geology and disturbance as interacting controls. A regional label such as “permafrost zone” is therefore not enough to predict the behavior of a specific foundation or hillside.

The store page’s own copy says, “The cold is alive and ever-present.” That is marketing language for the game’s threat model, not a scientific statement about frozen ground.

Survival mechanics and advertised features
The game’s central loop is preparation against a hostile cold environment. The listing names frostbite, storms and creeping cold as threats, then links survival to movement, resource gathering and restoring places that can support further exploration.
Manage cold and exposure
Cold is not a background decoration in the advertised design. Frostbite, storms and persistent low temperatures are explicit dangers. A sensible play pattern is to treat every trip as an exposure calculation: decide how far you can travel, what supplies you can carry, where you can retreat and whether a repaired shelter or machine will extend the route. The store page does not publish numeric temperature thresholds, exposure timers or damage rates, so those values should not be assumed.

Explore frozen cities and wilderness
Exploration spans abandoned urban areas and wilderness. These locations supply opportunities to hunt, scavenge and recover technology, but they also expose the player to the cold threats described above. The listing frames exploration as progression-gated rather than as a single unrestricted map tour: repairing systems and recovering technology allows access to farther areas.
Hunt, scavenge and craft
Hunting and scavenging provide resources, while crafting turns recovered materials into useful equipment or supplies. The listing confirms these activities but does not specify a complete recipe catalog, inventory limits, weapon statistics or resource respawn rules. Expect those details to evolve during Early Access.
Repair machines and restore shelters
Repairing machines is both a resource task and a way to reopen capability in the world. The game also lets players restore abandoned shelters and build a shelter network. In practical terms, the advertised network gives the expedition loop a sequence of safer or more useful fallback points rather than requiring every journey to begin from one location. Exact shelter bonuses, power requirements and construction limits are not stated on the store page.

A practical way to approach the advertised survival loop
- Prepare before leaving a shelter. Review the destination, expected exposure and available retreat points. Carry the supplies needed for the trip rather than assuming every location will provide immediate shelter.
- Prioritize information. Use exploration and the dog’s advertised scouting and warning abilities to identify danger before committing to a long route.
- Scavenge with a purpose. Collect materials that support crafting, repairs or shelter restoration instead of filling your inventory with items that do not advance the current objective.
- Repair progression-critical systems. Recovered technology and repaired machines are the listing’s stated way to push farther into the world, so treat them as access objectives as well as maintenance jobs.
- Extend your shelter network. Restored shelters can divide a long expedition into manageable legs. The page does not promise identical benefits at every shelter, so inspect each one’s available functions.
- Turn back early when exposure rises. Frostbite and storms are explicit threats. A successful survival run is measured by returning with useful resources, not by staying outside until supplies are exhausted.
- Coordinate in co-op. With up to three friends, assign complementary tasks such as scouting, carrying supplies, gathering resources and handling repairs. The exact role system is not specified; coordination is a player strategy, not a confirmed class mechanic.

What is confirmed, and what remains uncertain
Confirmed by the official listing
- Cold-focused survival threats include frostbite, storms and creeping cold.
- Activities include exploration, hunting, scavenging, crafting, machine repair and shelter restoration.
- Progression involves recovering technology and repairing systems to reach farther areas.
- A dog companion can scout, warn of danger and carry supplies.
- Single-player and online co-op are listed, with up to three friends.
- Steam achievements, trading cards, Cloud, stats and Family Sharing are listed.
Not established by the listing alone
- Exact exposure formulas, frostbite thresholds, storm frequency or temperature values.
- Detailed recipes, weapon balance, inventory capacity and shelter statistics.
- Performance at particular resolutions or graphics settings.
- Long-term Early Access roadmap, final release date or unchanged hardware requirements.
- Whether every advertised feature is complete or balanced in the October 2026 build.
That distinction matters because store descriptions explain intended features, while hands-on play and later patches determine how those systems actually feel and perform.
Bottom line
Scientifically, permafrost is ground at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years, with a seasonally thawing active layer above it. Thaw can produce settlement, thermokarst, slope failures, drainage changes and infrastructure damage, but outcomes vary with ice, terrain, water, vegetation and disturbance. In the separate PC game Permafrost, the word names a fictional frozen setting where survival revolves around managing cold, exploring, scavenging, crafting, repairing machines, restoring shelters and progressing with an optional dog companion. Treat the game’s details as advertised Early Access features and check the live Steam listing for changing specifications.
