What Is pbidesktopsetup_x64 1.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix Its Windows Errors

pbidesktopsetup_x64 1.exe is usually a second local copy of Microsoft’s 64-bit Power BI Desktop installer, whose documented filename is PBIDesktopSetup_x64.exe. The added 1 commonly appears when a browser or Windows saves a duplicate download, but the name alone cannot prove that the file is genuine. Treat it as untrusted until you verify its origin, Microsoft digital signature, hash (when an official reference is available), and security-scan result.

If the installer is legitimate, errors usually come from prerequisites, permissions, endpoint-security policy, blocked child processes or named-pipe communication, or an unsuitable deployment context. The steps below show how to verify the file, install Power BI Desktop safely, diagnose 0x80070005, resolve apparent hangs with multiple installer processes, and remove an unnecessary duplicate afterward.

What the filename means

Microsoft documents PBIDesktopSetup_x64.exe as the 64-bit executable installer for Power BI Desktop. Microsoft distributes Power BI Desktop through two supported channels: the Microsoft Store and a direct Download Center executable. The direct package contains the supported languages in one executable, and Microsoft recommends the 64-bit edition. The 32-bit edition is no longer supported.

The space followed by 1 is not part of Microsoft’s documented installer name. Browsers and Windows often append a number when a file with the same name already exists in the download folder. That is a plausible explanation, not proof of provenance. A malicious file can be given any convincing name, so inspect the file itself before opening it.

What a normal installer does

A genuine installer starts the Power BI Desktop setup process and may create temporary files and child processes while it checks prerequisites and prepares the installation. It should not need an unexplained autorun entry or an untrusted publisher certificate. The exact files and process tree can vary by release and deployment method, so judge them together with the signature, source and security results.

Is pbidesktopsetup_x64 1.exe safe?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer based only on the filename. A copy downloaded directly from Microsoft, carrying a valid Microsoft signature, and passing current endpoint protection is materially different from an unsigned file obtained from a third-party download page.

An ANY.RUN sandbox report dated April 29, 2026 analyzed a file named PBIDesktopSetup_x64.exe downloaded from a Microsoft URL and assigned that sample a “Malicious activity” verdict. The report mentioned an untrusted certificate, an autorun registry change, dropped or overwritten executable content, and Microsoft applications starting from unusual locations. ANY.RUN also warns that sandbox observations can be affected by user actions and are supplied for acknowledgement. That report is evidence about that particular sample, not a blanket verdict on every Microsoft installer. If your file shows the same indicators, stop and involve your security team rather than trying to force the installation.

Verify the file before execution

  1. Check the download source. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the folder and the downloaded-from context available on the General tab. If you did not intentionally obtain it from Microsoft’s Store or Download Center, do not run it. Delete or quarantine it and obtain a fresh copy through an approved Microsoft channel.
  2. Inspect the digital signature. Open Properties, select Digital Signatures, choose the listed signature, and select Details. Windows should report that the signature is valid and identify Microsoft as the signer. An absent, invalid or unexpected signature is a stop condition; a matching filename is not enough.
  3. Scan with current endpoint protection. Use your organization’s security product or Windows’ available file-scan option. Do not disable protection merely to make setup run. If a scanner reports persistence, an untrusted certificate, unusual child processes or dropped executables, preserve the alert details and escalate to IT or security.
  4. Compare a hash when Microsoft supplies a reference. You can calculate a local SHA-256 value in PowerShell with Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -Path .PBIDesktopSetup_x64.exe. Compare it only with a value published by Microsoft for the same release and architecture; a value calculated without an official reference does not establish authenticity.
  5. Check the exact path. A file in your normal Downloads folder is easier to explain than one appearing in a temporary, startup or system directory without your action. Do not execute a copy that was unexpectedly placed in an autorun location.

Prerequisites Microsoft lists

Check these requirements before troubleshooting the installer. Meeting them does not guarantee success, but it removes common causes of setup failure.

Requirement Microsoft’s stated baseline Why it matters
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 or later Older releases are outside the documented baseline.
.NET .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later Setup and Power BI components rely on the framework.
Browser component Microsoft Edge Power BI uses Microsoft web components during installation and operation.
Memory At least 2 GB available RAM; 4 GB or more recommended Insufficient available memory can make setup appear stalled.
Display Supported 1440×900 or 1600×900 resolution Lower or unsupported display settings can prevent a supported user experience.
Processor 1 GHz or faster x64 CPU recommended The installer is the 64-bit package and Microsoft recommends an x64 processor.
WebView2 Required when it was not installed automatically The WebView2 runtime is needed for parts of Power BI Desktop.
Account context Do not run Power BI Desktop under a system account WebView2 does not support system accounts.

Choose an installation channel

Use the channel that matches how you maintain the computer. Both the Store and direct executable are documented Microsoft options; neither makes an unverified third-party copy safe.

Decision point Microsoft Store Direct EXE
Updates Managed through Store delivery on systems where Store updates are allowed. Managed through the downloaded package and your organization’s deployment process.
Administrative control Fits environments that permit Store app management. Provides documented command-line properties for controlled deployment.
Offline or scripted deployment May not fit disconnected or tightly scripted workflows. Can be launched interactively or with silent-install properties.
Enterprise software distribution Depends on the organization’s Store policy and packaging tools. Often easier to incorporate into an approved executable-based deployment workflow.

Do not switch channels casually on a managed computer. If your organization already distributes Power BI Desktop, follow its package and update policy instead of launching a second installer.

Safe manual installation procedure

1. Remove uncertainty about the copy

Close the browser download page and do not open the file yet. Record its full path, file size, creation time and signature status. If the file did not come from Microsoft, quarantine or delete it and download a new copy from the approved Microsoft Store or Download Center route. Keep only one clearly identified installer while testing; duplicate copies make process and log diagnosis harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Close conflicting setup instances

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes or Details tab, look for PBIDesktopSetup_x64.exe and other setup processes that belong to the same attempt. End only processes you started or that your administrator confirms are safe to stop. If an organization’s software-distribution agent owns the process, do not terminate it without approval. Restart Windows if a previous failed setup left locked files and you cannot identify the owner.

3. Confirm the prerequisites

Install pending Windows updates through your normal policy, confirm that .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later and Microsoft Edge are present, and check that WebView2 is installed when setup did not add it automatically. Ensure the system drive has adequate free space for the installer’s cache and temporary files. Do not run Power BI Desktop as a system account.

4. Start from the verified file

Right-click the verified executable and choose Run as administrator when your organization permits it. Administrative elevation can resolve access to protected locations, but it does not make an unsigned file trustworthy. If you cannot elevate, ask an administrator to perform the installation or to review the policy that blocks it.

5. Allow the installer to finish without repeated launches

Start one setup attempt and wait while it checks prerequisites. Launching the executable repeatedly can create several processes that compete for the same cache or communication channel. If the window disappears, do not immediately start another copy; inspect Task Manager and the generated setup log first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Restart and test Power BI Desktop

After setup reports completion, restart Windows if requested. Open Power BI Desktop from the installed shortcut or Start menu, not from an old download. If the application starts normally, keep the installer only if your approved deployment process needs it.

Fix error 0x80070005 (access denied)

Error 0x80070005 is commonly an access or permissions failure. One Microsoft-hosted report records the error while the installer attempted to cache itself under C:ProgramDataPackage Cache. The exact cause can be local permissions, endpoint-security controls, software-distribution policy or a locked cache entry.

  1. Sign in with an approved administrator account, or ask an administrator to run the setup.
  2. Verify that the account and the installer have permission to use the cache and temporary locations required by your organization. Do not broadly grant “Everyone” full control to system folders.
  3. Check endpoint-security and application-control logs for a rule blocking the installer, its child processes or writes to C:ProgramDataPackage Cache. Request a narrowly scoped, time-limited exception from IT rather than disabling protection.
  4. Stop stale setup processes as described earlier, restart Windows if files remain locked, and retry once with a newly verified installer.
  5. Locate the generated installer log and record the failing path, account, timestamp and rule name. Give those details to the administrator; repeating the same command without changing the permission or policy condition will not repair the cause.

Fix an apparent hang or six simultaneous setup processes

A Microsoft Fabric Community support report describes six PBIDesktopSetup_x64.exe processes remaining during an apparent hang. Microsoft support advised running Power BI Desktop as administrator when possible and reviewing security rules that prevent named-pipe communication. In managed environments, Power BI Desktop and its subprocesses may need to be explicitly allowed by policy.

  1. Open Task Manager and confirm whether the processes are still consuming CPU, writing to disk or waiting. Do not assume that a process count alone proves malware.
  2. Check your endpoint-security console for blocked named pipes, child-process creation, inter-process communication or executable launches from temporary locations.
  3. Ask an administrator to review the policy and, if approved, whitelist Power BI Desktop and its respective subprocesses. The exception should cover only the organization’s verified installation path and required components.
  4. Run a single elevated setup attempt after the policy review. If it still hangs, collect the setup log and the security event record rather than launching more copies.
  5. If the file has an invalid signature or was not downloaded from Microsoft, stop troubleshooting that copy; quarantine it and restart with a fresh verified download.

Use documented silent-install options

For approved unattended deployment, Microsoft documents this example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
PBIDesktopSetup_x64.exe -quiet LANGUAGE=de-DE ACCEPT_EULA=1

-quiet suppresses the normal interactive flow. LANGUAGE=de-DE selects German in this example, and ACCEPT_EULA=1 records acceptance of the license terms. Replace the language value only with one your deployment plan supports, and obtain the required approval before accepting terms on behalf of an organization.

Microsoft also documents these deployment properties:

Property Purpose Deployment caution
INSTALLDESKTOPSHORTCUT Controls creation of a desktop shortcut. Use the value specified by your organization’s packaging standard.
INSTALLLOCATION Sets the installation location. Choose a path permitted by application-control policy.
LANGUAGE Selects the setup language. Validate the language value before broad deployment.
DISABLE_UPDATE_NOTIFICATION Controls update-notification behavior. Disabling notices can hide maintenance information, so document the policy decision.

Some tools require an MSI rather than an EXE. Microsoft documents extracting MSI payloads with WiX for that scenario. Do not upgrade an existing EXE installation directly to an extracted MSI package: Microsoft warns that this is unsupported unless the older installation is uninstalled first. Plan the migration, back up deployment settings, uninstall the old package through your approved process, and then deploy the MSI.

When the installer fails after verification

WebView2 is missing or unusable

Power BI Desktop requires WebView2 when it was not installed automatically, and Microsoft says the application does not support running under a system account because WebView2 does not support system accounts. Verify that WebView2 is present, repair it through your organization’s approved method if necessary, and run setup under a normal user or administrator account rather than a service identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security software blocks child processes

Security controls can allow the parent installer while blocking a subprocess, temporary executable or named-pipe connection. Review the control’s event at the exact setup time. Ask IT for a targeted allow rule covering the verified Power BI installation and its required subprocesses; never turn off endpoint protection globally as a first troubleshooting step.

The cache or temporary directory is locked

Close other setup attempts, restart Windows, and retry with one verified copy. If the log identifies a locked file or denied directory, provide that path to the administrator. Manually deleting protected cache content can damage another managed installation, so use your organization’s cleanup procedure.

The computer is below the documented baseline

Unsupported Windows versions, an x86-only processor, less than the available memory baseline, an unsupported display resolution or missing .NET and Edge components can prevent a successful installation. Bring the computer to the documented baseline or use a supported device; do not attempt to bypass prerequisite checks with an untrusted package.

Can you delete pbidesktopsetup_x64 1.exe?

Yes, after Power BI Desktop is installed and working, you can normally remove an installer that is only a downloaded package. Deleting it does not uninstall the application. Before removal, confirm that no approved deployment job, repair workflow or rollback plan needs the executable. In File Explorer, select the duplicate, choose Delete, and empty the Recycle Bin only after your organization’s retention policy allows it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the copy is unverified or flagged, quarantine it through your security product rather than opening it to “check” what it does. Keep the alert, path and hash for IT. If you need to reinstall later, download a fresh package and verify it again; do not archive a suspicious duplicate as a backup.

What to collect before contacting IT

  • The full installer path and exact filename, including whether it contains the added 1.
  • The download source, date and whether the file’s Microsoft signature is valid.
  • The Windows edition and version, CPU architecture, available RAM and free disk space.
  • The exact error code or visible symptom, such as 0x80070005, a disappearing window or multiple persistent processes.
  • The setup log path and the last failing action or directory.
  • Endpoint-security events showing blocked files, named pipes, child processes or policy rules.
  • Whether the attempt used the Store, direct EXE, silent parameters or an extracted MSI.

These details let an administrator distinguish a bad download from a permissions problem, unsupported prerequisite, deployment conflict or security-policy block. Avoid repeatedly running an unverified executable while gathering evidence.

Practical verdict

pbidesktopsetup_x64 1.exe is most plausibly a duplicate-named copy of Microsoft’s 64-bit Power BI Desktop installer, but the suffix is only a naming clue. Use the canonical Microsoft channel, validate the publisher signature and scan result, meet the documented prerequisites, and troubleshoot permissions, cache access, named-pipe policy and deployment context in that order. A verified installer can be removed after a successful installation when no approved process needs it; an unsigned or suspicious copy should be quarantined instead.
