OpenMediaVault is free, Debian-based network-attached storage (NAS) software for turning your own computer or server into shared storage. It provides a web interface for administration and supports file-sharing services including SMB/CIFS and NFS. The phrase “123,886 title matches beside four fingerprints” is not explained by the official OpenMediaVault sources, so it should not be treated as a statistic or product feature.
What OpenMediaVault does
The OpenMediaVault 8 documentation describes it as “a complete network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux.” In practical terms, it is software you install on compatible hardware and administer as a storage server; it is not a dedicated commercial NAS appliance. The project identifies home and small-office use as its primary audience.
Administration is available through a web interface. SSH can also be used when enabled, giving administrators another way to manage the underlying server. The web interface is intended to make common NAS configuration accessible without making every task a command-line operation.
How files and services are shared
Official documentation identifies FTP, SMB/CIFS, and NFS among the protocols available for file access. User and group permissions let an administrator manage who can access shared data. Which services are active depends on how an installation is configured; their presence in the project documentation does not mean every service is enabled automatically.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The project overview also lists RSync and a DAAP media server. OpenMediaVault is modular and can be extended with plugins, but third-party plugin sources are separate from the base system. Treat each added service or plugin as an administrative choice: check its source, compatibility, and maintenance status before relying on it.
Ways to install OpenMediaVault
The current official installation page describes OpenMediaVault 8, based on Debian 13, and provides two paths: installing on an existing Debian system or using an ISO for a bare-metal AMD64 installation. The bare-metal installer is text-based and intended for server environments, including headless setups.

- Choose the installation path. Use the official OpenMediaVault installation page to confirm current release, Debian version, and architecture details before starting.
- Prepare compatible hardware. Confirm that the machine’s components are supported by Debian and plan how its storage drives will be connected and used.
- Follow the current instructions for that path. For an ISO installation, the official download page provides ISO and repository information. Do not assume installation steps for one release or architecture apply to another.
- Configure the NAS after installation. Use the administration interface to set up storage, users, permissions, and the file-sharing services you need.
The project’s OpenMediaVault 8 documentation covers the system and its administration features. The installation page is the appropriate source for detailed, release-specific installation steps.
Choosing storage for a self-built NAS
OpenMediaVault does not require a particular drive brand or model. Its prerequisite guidance says hardware support depends on Debian supporting the relevant hardware. Choose drives and a machine based on the interfaces available, the capacity you need, the number of bays, and the workload. A storage drive for a NAS is only one part of the build: a drive by itself does not provide redundancy or a backup.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check compatibility: Match drive interfaces and other hardware to the system you plan to run.
- Plan capacity and bays: Account for current data needs and how much room the machine has for drives.
- Choose a redundancy and backup approach: Decide separately how you will handle drive failure and protect important files; do not assume the NAS software or a particular drive automatically supplies either.
- Consider your workload: The suitable storage depends on how the server will be used, so there is no universal drive recommendation.
Who should consider it
OpenMediaVault suits someone who wants to administer shared storage on hardware they control and is willing to maintain a Linux server. It offers a web-based management route and familiar network-sharing protocols, while leaving hardware selection and service configuration to the administrator.
A dedicated NAS appliance may be a better fit for someone who wants a vendor-selected hardware-and-software package with less responsibility for assembling and maintaining a server. OpenMediaVault’s flexibility comes with the need to check compatibility, choose storage, configure access, and keep the installation maintained.
