NXTPAPER is TCL’s family of paper-like display technologies, not a type of E Ink. Depending on the generation and device, TCL combines a display panel with reflection control, surface treatment, automatic brightness and color adjustments, and reading modes. E Ink uses electrophoretic electronic ink: charged pigment particles move inside microcapsules, and the resulting image is viewed mainly by reflected ambient light. NXTPAPER is intended to keep the color, apps and motion of a phone or tablet, while E Ink is optimized for reflective, mostly static pages.
What NXTPAPER actually is
TCL introduced NXTPAPER in 2021 as a display platform that combines hardware and software features rather than a single panel specification. The name can therefore describe different implementations across phones and tablets. TCL’s current U.S. overview lists a paper-like tactile surface, reflection management, low-blue-light features, brightness adaptation and circadian color-temperature support. Those features, and their exact behavior, depend on the model and generation; they should not be assumed for every product carrying the NXTPAPER name. See TCL’s current description at TCL’s NXTPAPER technology overview.

The panel type has changed over time. TCL’s 2021 material described NXTPAPER as a highly reflective IPS screen. On March 4, 2026, TCL announced a next-generation implementation built on AMOLED. That means “NXTPAPER” by itself does not tell you whether a particular device uses IPS, AMOLED or another arrangement. Check the individual model’s technical specifications and generation before drawing conclusions about contrast, refresh, power use or lighting.

In practical terms, NXTPAPER is TCL’s attempt to make a conventional mobile display less glossy and less visually harsh while preserving a general-purpose operating system. You can still expect color interfaces, video, games, cameras, web pages and ordinary apps unless a specific product says otherwise.

How an E Ink screen forms an image
E Ink’s technology is electrophoretic. Its display contains microscopic capsules or cells filled with fluid and charged pigment particles. An electric field moves the particles toward or away from the viewing surface, changing which pigment is visible at each pixel. E Ink explains the process in its technical overview: How E Ink works.
The surface is reflective. As E Ink puts it, “no backlight is used”; ambient light is reflected from the display back to your eyes. A reader designed for dark rooms may add a front light positioned around the display, but that is separate from an LCD or OLED backlight shining through the panel. In bright surroundings, a reflective E Ink page can remain easy to see without generating its own white light.
E Ink panels are also bistable. After a page has been updated, the particles stay in position without continuous display power. The display therefore consumes energy while changing the image, not simply to keep a static page visible. The complete reader still uses power for its processor, storage, wireless radios, front light, touch layer and other electronics. E Ink describes this distinction at E Ink’s benefits page.

- Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
- Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.
NXTPAPER versus E Ink: the important differences
| Aspect | TCL NXTPAPER | E Ink ePaper |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A TCL display platform combining panel, surface and software features; implementation varies by generation, including an AMOLED announcement in 2026. | A reflective electrophoretic display in which charged pigment particles move to form the image. |
| How you see it | Depends on the panel. TCL designs NXTPAPER to manage reflections and emitted light while retaining a conventional color display experience. | Uses reflected ambient light. Some readers add a separate front light for low-light use. |
| Color and motion | Designed for color interfaces, video, games and normal mobile apps; exact specifications are model-specific. | Color E Ink products exist, but E Ink says current production matrix modules do not support video-rate updates. Faster modes can support limited animation. |

| Typical priority | Paper-like viewing with a full smartphone or tablet experience. | Reflective, book-focused reading with efficient static-page display behavior. |
What changed between NXTPAPER generations
2021: reflective IPS claims
TCL’s CES 2021 technology page described an early NXTPAPER design as a highly reflective IPS screen. It claimed “25 percent higher contrast than most e-ink tablets” and “more than 65 percent more power efficient than standard LCD screens.” Those are historical TCL comparisons, and the page does not describe the test method or comparison products. They should not be applied to current NXTPAPER phones or tablets. The original description remains at TCL’s CES 2021 technology page.
2024: NXTPAPER 3.0 reading modes
In January 2024, TCL announced NXTPAPER 3.0 with several selectable viewing modes. Normal View is intended for ordinary color use. Color Paper Mode lowers contrast for a paper-like color presentation, while Ink Paper mode switches to a black-and-white reading appearance. These modes are generation-specific; a device described simply as NXTPAPER may not include all three. TCL’s announcement is available at the NXTPAPER 3.0 announcement.
At the same event, TCL Communication CMO Stefan Streit said, “At TCL, we believe that advancing technology is not simply about adding more features, but also making it more accessible.” The statement describes TCL’s product direction, not an independent measurement of display performance.

2026: an AMOLED-based implementation
On March 4, 2026, TCL announced a next-generation NXTPAPER technology on AMOLED. TCL reported circular polarization reaching 90 percent of natural light and blue light as low as 2.9 percent for the announced generation. These are company-reported figures, not independent comparative tests, and they do not establish a medical benefit. Details are in TCL’s 2026 announcement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTCL’s current U.S. page separately reports blue light as low as 3.41 percent for its latest technology, based on internal laboratory testing. TCL notes that actual performance varies by product and use. Because the 2.9 percent and 3.41 percent figures refer to different announcements and testing contexts, they should not be treated as a universal NXTPAPER specification.
Why E Ink still feels different during reading
Reflective page versus emitted display
E Ink’s image is formed by pigment and viewed through reflected room light. NXTPAPER devices still use an active mobile display, even when their surface and software reduce glare or select a paper-like mode. Under a desk lamp, outdoors or beside a window, the two technologies can therefore produce different highlights, shadows and reflections. The result depends heavily on the exact panel, coating, brightness setting and surrounding light.

Page turns and animation
Turning an E Ink page requires moving particles, so readers may show a brief flash, partial refresh or other transition. E Ink’s own technical explanation says current production matrix modules do not support video-rate updates, although faster update modes can handle some animation. NXTPAPER uses the update behavior of its underlying mobile panel and is consequently better suited to scrolling websites, video, games and interactive applications.
Color
NXTPAPER’s normal mobile use is built around color. Its paper and ink modes are optional presentations rather than a permanent limitation. E Ink is not always monochrome—color products are available—but color E Ink uses a different technology and may trade saturation, resolution or refresh behavior for color capability. Check the specifications of the particular reader rather than assuming every E Ink product looks alike.
Power, lighting and battery expectations
It is tempting to equate “paper-like” with E Ink battery life, but NXTPAPER does not automatically provide E Ink’s bistable behavior. A NXTPAPER phone or tablet continues to run an operating system, radios, sensors and background services, and its display power depends on panel type, brightness, refresh rate and content. A video-playing tablet will draw power for processing and continuous screen updates regardless of its reading mode.

An E Ink reader can keep a static page visible without display-update power. Wireless synchronization, audiobooks, page turns, note-taking, front lighting and other activities still reduce its battery. For a fair comparison, compare named models under the same brightness, connectivity and reading conditions; broad claims about one technology’s battery life are unreliable without those controls.
Which technology suits which reader?
Choose a dedicated E Ink reader when
- Your main activity is reading books or long-form documents.
- You prefer a reflective page and do not need rapid scrolling or video.
- You value the low display-update power of a static page.
- You can accept slower page transitions and the more limited behavior of an e-reading operating system.
Choose a NXTPAPER phone or tablet when
- You want reading modes but also need color apps, web browsing, streaming, photography or games.
- You regularly switch between documents, messaging, maps and other mobile tasks.
- You dislike the refresh behavior or restricted app experience of many E Ink readers.
- You want one general-purpose device instead of a separate reader and phone.
A NXTPAPER device can be a compromise for someone who dislikes the look or responsiveness of E Ink, while an E Ink reader remains the more focused choice for book-first reading. Neither category is universally easier on the eyes, and available evidence here does not establish that either technology prevents eye strain or protects eyesight.
How to compare a specific NXTPAPER device with an E Ink reader
- Identify the generation and panel. Confirm whether the NXTPAPER model uses IPS, AMOLED or another panel, and note the E Ink reader’s exact display generation.
- Check the available modes. Look for Normal, Color Paper or Ink Paper modes only if the manufacturer lists them for that model.
- Review lighting hardware. Determine whether the E Ink reader has a front light and whether the NXTPAPER device relies on emitted light, reflection control or both.
- Match your content. Test the formats and apps you actually use, including comics, PDFs, textbooks, web pages and video.
- Compare refresh behavior. Look for page-flash settings on E Ink and refresh-rate or motion specifications on NXTPAPER.
- Evaluate battery claims in context. Record brightness, wireless use, front-light level and reading time rather than relying on a generic “all-day” statement.
- Inspect the screen in your normal environment. A shop, office or bedroom may reveal more about glare and comfort than a specification sheet.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “NXTPAPER is E Ink.” It is TCL’s own platform; its display implementation differs from electrophoretic E Ink.
- “Every NXTPAPER panel is LCD.” TCL’s historical material described reflective IPS, while its March 2026 announcement introduced an AMOLED implementation.
- “E Ink never uses light.” The display itself reflects ambient light, but many readers add a front light for dark rooms.
- “E Ink cannot show color.” Color E Ink products exist, although their refresh and color characteristics differ from conventional mobile screens.
- “A paper-like mode is a medical guarantee.” TCL’s blue-light and polarization figures are manufacturer-reported technical claims, not proof of a clinical outcome.
Bottom line for buyers
NXTPAPER and E Ink solve different problems. NXTPAPER modifies a general-purpose color display to make reading and viewing feel more paper-like, with features and panel types that vary by generation. E Ink uses reflective electrophoretic particles and bistability to create a book-like page that can remain visible without display-update power, while accepting slower refresh and less suitability for motion. Choose E Ink when reading is the primary job; choose NXTPAPER when you want reading comfort features without giving up the full capabilities of a phone or tablet.
