It is not a conventional server with 72 interchangeable graphics cards. In NVIDIA’s DGX configuration, 18 liquid-cooled compute trays hold 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs, while nine NVLink 6 switch trays connect every GPU into a single high-bandwidth scale-up system.
The design targets large-model training, reasoning-heavy inference and scientific workloads that need tightly coupled accelerators. It also requires rack-level power conversion, liquid cooling, management networks and shared storage, so it is data-center infrastructure rather than a workstation or plug-in upgrade.

What “NVL72” means
“NVL72” describes the size and topology of the NVLink domain: up to 72 Rubin GPUs participate in one tightly connected, rack-scale fabric. The number does not mean that one motherboard carries 72 cards, nor that the rack behaves like 72 independent servers. NVIDIA’s architecture is designed so software can treat the GPUs as a coordinated accelerator resource, with NVLink providing the within-rack communication path.

What is inside an NVL72 rack?
Compute trays: CPUs paired with GPUs
Each compute tray combines two Vera CPUs with four Rubin GPUs. The CPUs run operating-system services, data preparation, communication control and tasks that are inefficient on accelerators. The four GPUs provide the parallel compute capacity used by model training, inference and simulations. Because the CPU and GPU resources are packaged together in 18 repeated trays, operators can service or monitor units at tray level while still presenting the rack as one larger system.
The 72-GPU count is therefore a system total, not a promise that every application will use all 72 devices efficiently. Model size, parallelization strategy, batch size, sequence length and communication patterns determine how much of the rack a job can exploit.
NVLink 6 switch trays
Each of the nine NVLink switch trays contains four NVSwitch ASICs. NVIDIA’s guide specifies 72 NVLink 6 ports per ASIC, along with management and security components. Together, these trays provide NVLink connectivity to every GPU in the single 72-GPU L1 domain.
This fabric is the rack’s scale-up network. It is distinct from the Ethernet or InfiniBand networks used to connect multiple racks, reach storage and carry management traffic. Keeping those roles separate allows GPU-to-GPU synchronization to use the NVLink path while cluster and infrastructure traffic use their appropriate fabrics.
ConnectX-9 SuperNICs and BlueField-4 DPUs
NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform descriptions also name ConnectX-9 SuperNICs and BlueField-4 DPUs. These devices handle external networking, data movement and infrastructure processing. They should not be confused with NVSwitch: SuperNICs and DPUs support communication beyond the NVLink GPU domain, whereas NVSwitch provides the internal GPU scale-up fabric.
Management networking
Two top-of-rack Ethernet switches connect baseboard management controllers and other management endpoints. NVIDIA’s DGX documentation separates management, compute and storage networks. That separation lets administrators provision hardware, monitor health and perform firmware operations without treating those packets as model traffic.

Local and shared storage
Every compute tray uses local E1.S NVMe storage for boot and caching. The primary dataset source is shared parallel storage accessed over converged Ethernet by default; InfiniBand is also possible. A local cache can reduce repeated reads from shared storage when it is configured and sized for the workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis arrangement matters for training pipelines. A rack may have enormous GPU throughput but still stall if data loaders repeatedly wait on a remote filesystem. Capacity planning must therefore include dataset size, checkpoint frequency, metadata load, cache policy and the bandwidth available from the shared storage system.
Liquid cooling and power distribution
The compute trays are liquid cooled. Coolant moves through rack manifolds and cold plates attached to CPUs, GPUs and other networking or storage components. At the rear, operators access the cooling manifolds, cable cartridges and the power bus bar.
Four power shelves serve each rack, and NVIDIA rates each shelf at 110 kW. The shelves convert incoming AC to 54 V DC, which is distributed through the rack bus bar. This is a facility-level electrical design, not the kind of power arrangement found in a normal server room. The data center must provide compatible liquid-cooling distribution, electrical capacity, physical space and maintenance access.
How the fabrics work together
NVLink for within-rack scale-up
NVLink connects the 72 Rubin GPUs as one domain. NVIDIA describes NVLink as enabling unified memory access across GPUs, which can reduce the software complexity and communication overhead associated with treating each accelerator as an isolated device. Fabric Manager or NVLSM, GPU drivers and CUDA/NCCL software participate in fabric setup, operation and monitoring.
Recommended Free Tools
Unified access does not eliminate application design choices. Training frameworks still divide model parameters, activations, gradients and optimizer state across devices. Efficient collective operations and placement remain essential, particularly for mixture-of-experts models in which experts and tokens move between GPUs.

Ethernet and InfiniBand for scale-out
NVL72 is the scale-up building block inside a rack. Larger installations connect multiple racks through external networks. NVIDIA describes both InfiniBand and Ethernet options for scale-out, with the choice affecting topology, software integration, congestion control and operational tooling.
External fabrics also carry traffic to shared storage and other services. A deployment can therefore have three distinct communication patterns: GPU collectives inside the rack, cluster communication between racks and management or storage flows handled by Ethernet-based infrastructure.
Published specifications and how to read them
The following figures are NVIDIA’s published NVL72 specifications. They use different numerical-precision formats, so they are not interchangeable measures of one universal speed.
| Metric | NVIDIA-published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Rubin GPUs | 72 | Rack total |
| Vera CPUs | 36 | Rack total |
| NVFP4 inference | 3,600 PFLOPS | Published inference specification |
| NVFP4 training | 2,520 PFLOPS | Published training specification |
| FP8/FP6 training | 1,260 PFLOPS | Precision-specific training figure |
| FP16/BF16 | 288 PFLOPS | Precision-specific figure |
| TF32 | 144 PFLOPS | Precision-specific figure |
PFLOPS figures are theoretical or vendor-rated specifications, not guarantees for a particular application. Real throughput depends on kernel efficiency, communication, memory access, sparsity, sequence length, input pipeline speed and software versions. Comparing an NVFP4 number with an FP16 or TF32 result without matching precision and workload produces a misleading conclusion.
What workloads is Vera Rubin NVL72 designed for?
Large-scale AI training
NVIDIA positions the rack for training large language and multimodal models, including mixture-of-experts (MoE) architectures. MoE systems can activate only a subset of experts for each token, but they still require fast movement of tokens and model state among devices. A single 72-GPU NVLink domain is intended to make those collective and expert-routing operations more efficient than a collection of loosely connected servers.
NVIDIA’s product page claims that Vera Rubin NVL72 can train a specified MoE model with one-fourth the number of GPUs required by a GB200 NVL72 comparison. That is a conditional vendor claim tied to the named model and test assumptions; it should not be read as a universal fourfold advantage for every model.

Interactive and agentic inference
The platform is also aimed at inference workloads that need high throughput, long context windows or rapid responses from reasoning-heavy agents. In these cases, the system may serve many concurrent users, keep large model states in memory and repeatedly invoke tools or specialist models.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
NVIDIA claims up to 10 times more tokens per megawatt and one-tenth the cost per million tokens for specified comparisons. Those statements are NVIDIA estimates under stated workload and model assumptions, not independent measurements or guarantees for a customer’s electricity price, utilization rate or software stack. NVIDIA also notes that inference performance is subject to change.
Scientific computing and HPC
NVIDIA presents Vera Rubin systems for climate modeling, computational fluid dynamics, quantum chemistry, energy exploration, simulation and data-intensive research. These workloads often combine high-precision numerical simulation with AI surrogates, data analysis and visualization. The platform’s value is not limited to language models: the same GPU scale-up fabric can support tightly coupled scientific codes when their communication and precision requirements match the hardware.
NVIDIA’s newsroom announcement names the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, NERSC and Los Alamos National Laboratory in connection with next-generation Vera Rubin systems. Those references describe platform deployments or plans; they do not establish that every named organization is installing the exact DGX NVL72 configuration.
Multi-rack AI factories
A single NVL72 rack can serve as a repeatable unit in a larger cluster. Scale-out networking links racks for distributed training, large inference pools and shared data services. At that point, scheduling, topology-aware placement, storage bandwidth and failure handling become as important as the raw GPU count.

Facility and mechanical planning
- Provide liquid-cooling connections for rack manifolds and cold plates.
- Reserve physical space for rear access to manifolds, cables and the power bus bar.
- Design electrical service for four 110 kW power shelves per rack, plus facility overhead and redundancy requirements.
- Plan separate paths or logical domains for management, compute and storage traffic.
- Use shared parallel storage sized for dataset reads, checkpoints and concurrent jobs.
Software and operations
GPU drivers, CUDA, NCCL and Fabric Manager or NVLSM are part of the NVLink software stack identified by NVIDIA. Administrators must align those components with the operating system, firmware, orchestration layer and application framework. Monitoring should cover GPU health, NVLink status, switch telemetry, coolant conditions, power draw, storage latency and network congestion.

Job-sizing checklist
Before purchasing or allocating an NVL72, define the target model, numerical precision, context length, batch size, expected tokens or simulation cells, checkpoint interval and acceptable latency. Then determine whether the workload needs one rack’s scale-up domain or a multi-rack cluster. A workload that cannot keep dozens of GPUs busy may achieve better efficiency on a smaller system.
How to compare NVL72 performance claims
Use a like-for-like framework rather than comparing headline numbers. Check each result against these axes:
- Workload: training, batch inference, interactive inference or scientific simulation.
- Model: architecture, parameter count, MoE routing, context length and sparsity.
- Precision: NVFP4, FP8, FP6, FP16, BF16 or TF32.
- Scale: one rack’s NVLink domain or several racks connected by Ethernet or InfiniBand.
- Efficiency metric: throughput, latency, tokens per megawatt or cost per million tokens.
- System conditions: software versions, utilization, storage path, networking and cooling limits.
NVIDIA’s comparisons with GB200 NVL72, including the one-fourth GPU requirement, up-to-10x tokens-per-megawatt statement and one-tenth cost-per-million-token statement, should remain attached to their named workloads and assumptions. The published materials do not provide independent third-party NVL72 performance statistics, so those figures should be treated as vendor claims.
Who should consider Vera Rubin NVL72?
NVL72 fits organizations operating large AI factories, national or institutional supercomputing environments and research platforms that can use a 72-GPU scale-up domain. It is most compelling when a workload is communication-heavy, benefits from shared accelerator memory access and has enough demand to keep the rack busy.
It is a poor fit for personal use, ordinary enterprise virtualization or small model experiments. The liquid cooling, 110 kW power shelves, specialized networking and shared-storage requirements make deployment a coordinated data-center project. Buyers should evaluate facility readiness and workload efficiency before focusing on peak PFLOPS.
Bottom line
NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 is a rack-scale computer: 18 compute trays provide 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs, while nine NVLink 6 switch trays bind the GPUs into one domain. Liquid cooling, 54 V DC rack distribution, management Ethernet, external scale-out networking and shared storage are integral parts of the design. NVIDIA targets large AI training, reasoning-focused inference and scientific computing, but its performance and efficiency figures are conditional vendor claims that must be interpreted with their model, precision and system assumptions.
