nordvpn-service.exe is the Windows background service used by the NordVPN desktop application. A copy installed under C:Program FilesNordVPN, signed by Nord Security or NordVPN, and started as part of an intentional NordVPN installation is usually expected. The filename alone is not proof of safety: a copy in a temporary or unrelated folder, an invalid signature, or unexplained behavior requires investigation.
Most launch and “background processes aren’t running” problems can be addressed without deleting the executable. Work through the diagnostic reset, antivirus check, app update, Windows component repairs, and a clean reinstall in that order; preserve diagnostics for NordVPN support if the service still fails.

What nordvpn-service.exe does
NordVPN installs a Windows service so its desktop client can perform background work needed for the application and VPN connection. The service can start with Windows or when the NordVPN application starts, and it may continue running while the main window is closed. Its presence is therefore normal on a computer where NordVPN was deliberately installed.
NordVPN documentation identifies C:Program FilesNordVPN as the expected current installation directory. The exact path can differ on an older installation or a system where the user selected another location, so the path is evidence rather than an absolute rule. What matters is whether the file belongs to an installation you recognize and whether Windows reports a valid publisher signature.

NordVPN’s connection logs are not a record of browsing activity. NordVPN says they record connection attempts, server-communication steps, and application errors such as crashes, but not internet traffic. The default manual-report folder is C:Program FilesNordVPNDiagnostics.
Is nordvpn-service.exe safe or a virus?
A legitimate NordVPN installation normally contains this executable, but a filename can be copied by unrelated software. Make the decision from provenance, location, signature, and behavior rather than from the name alone.
Check where the running file is stored
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find a NordVPN or
nordvpn-service.exeprocess on the Processes or Details tab. - Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Confirm that the folder is the NordVPN installation directory you expect, normally
C:Program FilesNordVPN, rather than a temporary folder, a user-profile download folder, or an unrelated program directory.
If Task Manager cannot open the location, the process disappears immediately, or multiple copies run from different folders, record the paths before changing anything. A second copy is not automatically malware, but it deserves closer review.

Verify the publisher and digital signature
- In File Explorer, right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present, and select the signature entry.
- Choose Details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Nord Security or NordVPN as the publisher.
- On the General and Details tabs, compare the product and file information with the NordVPN installation you intentionally installed.
The authoritative material available for this file does not publish a current hash or certificate thumbprint, so you cannot validate it against an official checksum from those sources. A valid signature is useful evidence, not a guarantee that every component on the computer is trustworthy.
What the 2020 security test does—and does not—show
Versprite’s 2020 NordVPN security-testing report stated: “The underlying service nordvpn-service.exe was not directly accessible by the running user, and thus malware installed on the machine would not be able to capture it without gaining Administrator rights first.” That finding describes the configuration tested at that time. It does not certify every file with this name, every release, or every computer.
What to do when the path or signature is suspicious
- Do not download a replacement executable from a random DLL or EXE site.
- Do not delete the file while you are still trying to determine what launched it; deletion can destroy evidence and leave a broken service registration.
- Use the security software already trusted on the PC to scan the suspicious file and its containing folder.
- Note the full path, publisher result, timestamps, and any recent security alerts. Those details help NordVPN support or your security provider distinguish a damaged installation from an unwanted program.
Symptoms associated with a failing service
NordVPN’s Windows crash guidance covers refusal to launch, an application that closes immediately, freezes, a blank or black window, failure to pass the logo screen, and crashes while connecting. A related message says that background processes are not running. The same underlying problem can appear as a connection that never completes even though the NordVPN window opens.

Common technical causes include a damaged application configuration, antivirus interference, an outdated NordVPN build, missing or damaged Microsoft Visual C++ components, an outdated .NET installation, corrupted Windows system files, or a service registration left inconsistent after an interrupted update. A file that was moved or quarantined can also prevent the service from starting. These symptoms do not, by themselves, establish that the executable is malicious.

Before changing anything: capture the state
Write down the exact message, when it appears, and whether it happens at Windows sign-in, when NordVPN opens, or only during connection. In Task Manager, note the executable’s path and whether CPU or memory usage remains high after the NordVPN window is closed. If your security software recently blocked, quarantined, or restored a NordVPN file, save that event’s details before creating an exclusion.
Restart Windows once before deeper repairs. A restart clears a service that is stuck from a previous update and gives you a clean baseline. If the same error returns, use the sequence below rather than repeatedly killing the process or deleting files.
Manual repair sequence for nordvpn-service.exe errors
1. Check security-software interference
Temporarily review your antivirus or endpoint-security history for blocked NordVPN files, services, or network components. NordVPN specifically recommends checking antivirus exclusions when its app refuses to launch or crashes. If your organization manages the security product, ask its administrator to review the event instead of creating a local exception.
Only add an exclusion when you have verified the installation path and publisher, and follow the security product’s documented method. Prefer an exclusion for the verified NordVPN program or service component rather than disabling protection for the whole computer. Re-enable protection immediately after testing if you turned it off briefly.

- Right-click the NordVPN desktop shortcut and choose Open file location.
- In that folder, open the NordVPN Diagnostics tool. If the shortcut points to another location, follow it to the installed NordVPN files rather than downloading a separate diagnostic executable.
- Choose Reset app and allow the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows, open NordVPN, and test a connection.
A reset targets application configuration rather than removing the installation. It is therefore a safer first repair than deleting the service file. If the reset changes a setting or requires you to sign in again, restore your settings only after confirming that the service starts normally.
3. Update NordVPN
Open NordVPN and use its built-in update option if the window remains usable. If it will not open, proceed to the official NordVPN Windows download from a browser and install the current build over the existing installation. Use only the publisher’s official download channel; do not substitute an executable obtained from a third-party file repository.
Restart Windows after the update and test both application launch and connection. An update can replace a damaged service binary or correct incompatibilities without removing your existing installation.
4. Repair Microsoft Visual C++ and update .NET
NordVPN’s crash guidance recommends repairing or reinstalling the latest Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable and updating .NET. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) to locate the installed Visual C++ redistributable and choose its available Modify or Repair action. If repair is unavailable or fails, reinstall the current package from Microsoft’s official distribution channel.
Install pending .NET updates through Windows Update or Microsoft’s official installer, then restart. Do not remove random runtime DLLs from the NordVPN folder: shared components belong to Windows or Microsoft runtimes, and deleting them can break other applications.
5. Repair Windows system files with SFC
NordVPN recommends running System File Checker when damaged Windows components may be involved.

- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- At the elevated prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
- Restart Windows and test NordVPN again.
If SFC reports that it could not repair all files, keep the result and the exact wording for support. The command checks Windows-protected files; it does not validate the NordVPN executable itself.
6. Install available Windows updates
Go to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when prompted. Updates can supply fixes for services, .NET, security components, and networking dependencies that a VPN client uses. Test NordVPN after each restart so you know whether the update changed the result.
7. Uninstall, restart, and reinstall NordVPN
Use a clean reinstall when the reset, update, runtime repair, and SFC scan do not restore the service.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features).
- Select NordVPN and choose Uninstall. Follow the prompts and approve administrator requests.
- Restart Windows even if the uninstaller does not explicitly require it. This lets Windows release the old service registration and files.
- Download the current Windows installer from NordVPN’s official site and install it normally.
- Launch the app, sign in with an active NordVPN subscription, and test a connection.
Do not copy an old nordvpn-service.exe into the new installation. A clean installer must create the service and its supporting files together.
8. Collect diagnostics and contact support
If the service still fails, use NordVPN’s Diagnostics workflow to collect a report. The default manual-report directory is C:Program FilesNordVPNDiagnostics. NordVPN says the logs include connection attempts, server communication steps, and application errors such as crashes, not the contents of your internet traffic.

When nordvpn-service.exe uses high CPU or memory
There is no authoritative user-facing performance or prevalence statistic for this process. A short burst of activity while the app starts, updates, or negotiates a connection is different from sustained high usage while idle.
- In Task Manager, sort the Processes or Details tab by CPU and then by memory.
- Confirm that the busy process is the copy in your verified NordVPN directory.
- Record usage for several minutes after disconnecting and closing the NordVPN window.
- Restart Windows, check for antivirus interference, and apply the Diagnostics reset and app update.
- If the usage remains high, repair the Microsoft components, run
sfc /scannow, and perform the clean reinstall described above.
High usage from a copy in an unrelated folder should be treated as a security investigation, not merely a performance problem. Scan it with your trusted security software and preserve its path and signature information.
“Background processes aren’t running”: a focused decision path
- The message appears once after an update: restart Windows, then run Diagnostics > Reset app.
- Your antivirus recently blocked a NordVPN component: review the event, verify the file’s path and signature, and follow the security product’s controlled-exclusion procedure.
- Reset completes but the message returns: update NordVPN, repair Visual C++ and .NET, run SFC, and install Windows updates.
- The installer or service remains broken: uninstall through Windows, restart, and reinstall from NordVPN’s official Windows download.
- The problem survives a clean reinstall: collect diagnostics from the NordVPN Diagnostics folder and contact NordVPN support.
Windows versions and support status
NordVPN’s current Windows installation guidance supports Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. NordVPN separately describes Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 32-bit as legacy-client environments that no longer receive normal application updates and are not recommended for the safest, most reliable experience.

Moving to a supported 64-bit Windows edition is the durable fix when hardware allows it.

How to remove NordVPN safely
If you no longer want NordVPN, remove it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or the normal Windows software-uninstall process. This lets the uninstaller remove its service registration and related files consistently. Restart afterward and check that the NordVPN entry and service are gone.
Do not delete nordvpn-service.exe directly from File Explorer or Task Manager. Direct deletion can leave a service entry pointing to a missing file, produce repeated Windows errors, and make a later reinstall harder. If you are investigating a suspicious copy, preserve the evidence and scan it instead of treating deletion as the first repair.
