networksettingsplugin.exe is most consistently identified as a network-settings component of Lenovo Nerve Center or Nerve Sense. A copy in the Lenovo utility’s installation folder, with a valid Lenovo digital signature and the parent Lenovo application installed, is consistent with a legitimate file. The filename alone is not proof of safety, however. A copy in a temporary or user-writable folder, an unsigned file, or one flagged by Microsoft Defender requires investigation before you allow it to run.
Use the manual checks and repairs below in order. They distinguish a damaged Lenovo component from an impostor and address failures that begin after a Windows or driver update.

What networksettingsplugin.exe does
Third-party software inventories identify NetworkSettingsPlugin.exe among the files installed with Lenovo Nerve Center or Nerve Sense. Those listings place it alongside Lenovo components such as LenovoNerveCenter.exe and PluginLoaderSvc.exe. The name indicates a plug-in concerned with network-related settings, but the inventories do not establish that every file carrying this name is authentic or that it is present on every Lenovo computer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In practice, the file matters only in the context of its parent application. If Lenovo Nerve Center is installed and the executable resides in that application’s directory, an error usually points to a damaged installation, a missing dependency, or a change in Windows or a network driver. If Lenovo Nerve Center is not installed, the file may be a leftover component, a poorly packaged program, or an impostor using a plausible name.

Is networksettingsplugin.exe safe?
There is no safe-versus-dangerous answer based on the filename alone. Check four pieces of evidence together: the location, the signer, the owning process, and security-scan results.
1. Check the path from Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find the process that reports the error or shows the name
networksettingsplugin.exe. If it is not visible, use the Details tab and look for the executable. - Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Record the complete folder path. A path inside a Lenovo Nerve Center or Nerve Sense installation directory is consistent with the component listings. A copy in
%TEMP%,%APPDATA%, Downloads, or an unrelated directory deserves investigation.
Do not treat a Lenovo-looking folder name as proof by itself. Attackers can create folders with convincing names, which is why the next checks matter.
2. Check the digital signature
- In the opened folder, right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures, when that tab is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Lenovo.
A missing or invalid signature does not automatically prove malware, because software can be unsigned, but it removes an important reason to trust the file. Treat an unsigned copy in an unexpected folder as high risk rather than attempting to repair it in place.

Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer shows which process owns a process and which handles and DLLs it has opened or loaded. Run it with appropriate administrative permission, locate the executable, and inspect its path, parent process, handles, and loaded DLLs. A parent process belonging to Lenovo Nerve Center and a path matching the installed utility support the legitimate-component explanation. An unrelated parent, a user-writable location, or a suspicious DLL loaded from another writable folder calls for containment and further investigation.

4. Scan before allowing access
- Right-click the executable and its containing folder and use Microsoft Defender’s scan option, or start a custom scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Review the detection name and the affected path if Defender reports a problem. Quarantine a file that Defender identifies rather than restoring it merely to stop the error.
- Do not create a Windows Defender Firewall exception for a copy you do not recognize. Microsoft warns that allowing an unknown app through the firewall can make the device less secure.
A clean scan is useful evidence, not a guarantee. Keep the path, signer, parent process, and scan result together when deciding what to do next.
Why the error appears
A Lenovo utility installation changed or became damaged
If the message began after updating, repairing, or partially removing Lenovo Nerve Center or Nerve Sense, the plug-in may no longer match the utility that loads it. Missing files, an interrupted update, or a stale registration can make a legitimate executable stop working or appear repeatedly.
A Windows update blocked a driver or dependency
Windows Code Integrity restricts which kernel-mode drivers can load. Microsoft explains that a blocked driver can leave a network adapter unrecognized or cause an application that depends on that driver to fail. Microsoft’s April 2026 update guidance also notes that blocked vulnerable drivers can generate Code Integrity events and related application or hardware failures. This is a plausible explanation when the error starts immediately after Windows updates, a security-policy change, or a driver update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLenovo or network drivers are outdated, missing, or incompatible
The plug-in may be functioning normally while the network component it expects is unavailable. A driver update from the hardware vendor can change the adapter, service, or interface that the Lenovo utility queries. Conversely, installing an incompatible driver can trigger the first failure.

An impostor is using the name
Malware and unwanted software can copy names of legitimate components. An executable in a temporary or user-writable directory, with no valid Lenovo signature, no Lenovo parent application, or a Defender detection should be handled as an untrusted file. Do not download a replacement executable from an unofficial DLL or EXE site.
Capture the failure before changing files
Write down the exact error text, when it appears, and what changed immediately beforehand. Note whether it occurs at sign-in, when opening Lenovo software, after waking from sleep, or when connecting to a network. Then record:
- The full path shown by Open file location.
- Whether Lenovo Nerve Center or Nerve Sense is installed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows versions).
- The signature status and signer.
- Any Microsoft Defender detection and its action.
- Whether the network adapter is visible and working in Device Manager > Network adapters.
This record prevents you from deleting a legitimate component when the real fault is a blocked driver, and it gives Lenovo support enough context to identify the correct package.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Lenovo Nerve Center or Lenovo Nerve Sense. Select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options when Windows offers it.
- Try Repair first. This can restore missing registrations without removing the application’s data.
- If the error remains, use Reset only if you understand that Windows may remove the app’s local data and settings.
- When those options are unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the Lenovo utility, restart Windows, and obtain the matching installer through Lenovo’s official support channel for your exact model and Windows edition.
- Install the package, restart again, and test the action that previously produced the message.
Do not copy a standalone executable into the folder. The plug-in belongs to a software family, so repairing or reinstalling the parent application lets its registered files and dependencies be handled together.
2. Uninstall the Lenovo utility if you do not need it
If you never use Lenovo Nerve Center/Nerve Sense and the file is confirmed to belong to that installation, remove the parent application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps rather than deleting the EXE. Restart Windows and check whether the error has stopped. Removing the parent utility can also remove other Lenovo-specific controls it provides, so verify that you do not rely on its network profiles, hotkeys, or device settings before uninstalling.
3. Check Code Integrity events after an update
- Press Win+R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - In Event Viewer, open Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational.
- Look at events created at the same time as the networksettingsplugin.exe failure. Record the driver filename, publisher, event ID, and reason for the block.
- If a Lenovo or network driver is named, obtain the current Windows-compatible driver from the computer or hardware vendor. Do not disable Code Integrity simply to make the plug-in start.
A Code Integrity event connects the timing of the Windows update to a blocked driver; it does not, by itself, mean that networksettingsplugin.exe is malicious.

Use Lenovo’s support channel for the exact computer model, and check the network adapter manufacturer’s package when Lenovo directs you to do so. In Device Manager, expand Network adapters and note the adapter’s model and warning icon before changing anything. Install only a package intended for your Windows version and hardware. Microsoft documents that unsigned or blocked drivers can prevent an adapter from being recognized or stop dependent applications from starting.

If a newly installed driver caused the problem, open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when Windows makes that option available. Record the current version before rolling back so you can restore it if the change does not help.
5. Quarantine an untrusted copy
Use this branch when the executable is unsigned, sits in a user-writable or unrelated folder, has no legitimate Lenovo parent application, or is detected by Defender.
- Disconnect from networks if you suspect active unwanted behavior, especially if the process repeatedly relaunches.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan and allow it to quarantine the file. Do not add a firewall exception or restore the file to silence the message.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, remove an unfamiliar program installed around the time the file appeared.
- Use Process Explorer to identify the parent process and persistence clues, such as a service or scheduled task that recreates the file.
- Restart and run another Defender scan. If the file returns, preserve the path and parent-process details and seek qualified malware-removal assistance rather than downloading a replacement EXE.
6. Re-test after each change
Restart Windows after repairing or reinstalling the Lenovo utility, changing a driver, or quarantining a file. Reproduce the original action once, then check whether the adapter, Lenovo utility, and Event Viewer show the same failure. Making one change at a time tells you which step actually resolved or altered the problem.

Can you delete networksettingsplugin.exe?
Manual deletion is not the preferred fix for a legitimate copy. It can leave Lenovo Nerve Center installed but missing a registered plug-in, causing new errors or preventing the utility from starting. Repair or uninstall the parent application instead. Deletion is appropriate only after you have established that the file is an untrusted copy and have allowed Defender or another qualified security process to quarantine it. If the file is recreated, investigate the installer, service, scheduled task, or other persistence mechanism responsible for bringing it back.
Choose the response that matches the evidence
| What you find | Most appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Lenovo Nerve Center/Nerve Sense is installed; the file is in its directory and has a valid Lenovo signature. | Repair or reinstall the Lenovo utility, then test again. |
| The failure began after a Windows update and Code Integrity contains a matching blocked-driver event. | Identify the blocked driver and install a compatible Lenovo or hardware-vendor version. |
The file is unsigned or located in %TEMP%, %APPDATA%, Downloads, or another unrelated folder. |
Do not allow it through the firewall; scan, quarantine, and investigate its parent or installer. |
| Lenovo Nerve Center/Nerve Sense is not installed, but the file remains. | Trace the program that created it with Process Explorer and installed-app records before removing anything. |
| You do not use the Lenovo utility and the file is confirmed as its component. | Uninstall the parent Lenovo utility rather than deleting the executable alone. |
When the error persists
Return to the evidence rather than repeating the same repair. A legitimate, signed file in the correct directory with no Code Integrity event points back to a Lenovo installation problem; reinstall the exact package for your model. A legitimate file accompanied by a blocked driver points to the driver path, not to replacing the EXE. An unsigned or repeatedly recreated file points to the program or persistence mechanism that installed it. Keep the original path, signature details, Defender result, Event Viewer record, and Lenovo model available when contacting Lenovo support.
Do not disable Windows driver-enforcement or firewall protections merely to suppress the message. Those controls are the mechanisms that prevent blocked or unrecognized components from loading, and bypassing them can hide the underlying fault while increasing exposure.
