What Is networkserver.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix networkserver.exe Errors on Windows

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

networkserver.exe is not a unique Windows system process. It is a filename reused by different programs, including the documented Phidgets Network Server, Samsung Recovery components and GNSS Spider records. A filename alone cannot tell you whether a copy is safe. Identify the complete path, parent application, publisher, signature and security-scan result before allowing network access, stopping the process or deleting the file.

For Phidgets, the documented executable is C:Program FilesPhidgetsPhidget22NetworkServer.exe and it controls Phidgets remotely over a network. Other locations can be legitimate for other software, but an unexpected copy in a temporary folder, user profile or startup directory needs investigation.

What networkserver.exe does

Windows does not reserve networkserver.exe for one built-in service. The same basename can be installed by unrelated products, so its behavior depends on the program that owns the file.

Documented Phidgets use

Phidgets documents NetworkServer.exe as the component used to control Phidgets remotely over a network through the Phidget Network Server. Its documented Windows location is C:Program FilesPhidgetsPhidget22NetworkServer.exe. If you intentionally installed Phidgets software and the running file matches that path, network activity is expected. See the vendor’s Windows information: Phidgets Windows Advanced Information.

Other software can reuse the name

Software inventory records also list a NetworkServer.exe with Samsung Recovery and a SpiderNetworkServer.exe within GNSS Spider. Those records show that the basename is reused; they do not certify every copy as safe or current. Treat each instance as a separate file to verify.

What you find What it suggests What to do
C:Program FilesPhidgetsPhidget22NetworkServer.exe Consistent with an installed Phidgets Network Server Confirm the parent installation, publisher and signature, then allow only the network access you need
A path under a known Samsung Recovery or GNSS Spider installation Could belong to that product, because those products have records using the basename Verify the installation, publisher, signature and security-scan result
%Temp%, a random folder, a user profile or an unfamiliar startup directory Unusual and potentially unsafe Disconnect from networks if necessary, preserve evidence and scan before running or allowing it

How to identify your copy safely

Do these checks before ending the process or changing firewall rules. They distinguish a legitimate component from a renamed or dropped executable more reliably than the name itself.

  1. Open the file location. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select the Details tab, right-click networkserver.exe and choose Open file location. Record the full path, drive and parent folder. If several instances appear, record every path separately.
  2. Inspect the parent application. Look for an installed program that you knowingly use. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows), search for Phidgets, Samsung Recovery, GNSS Spider or another product associated with the folder. An unexplained executable with no corresponding installation deserves extra scrutiny.
  3. Check publisher and signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures and select a signature to view its details. A valid signature from the expected vendor supports authenticity. A missing, invalid or unrelated signature is a warning, but a signature alone is not a complete safety guarantee.
  4. Review details and timestamps. On the Details tab, note the product name, company, file description, version and original filename. Compare those values with the program that installed it. A mismatch, a recently created file that appeared without an installation and a process launched from an odd directory all merit investigation.
  5. Check startup and network behavior. In Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, note whether it starts with Windows. In Settings > Network & internet, review active connections, and use your firewall’s connection or rule details to see the remote address and executable path. Legitimate Phidgets use normally corresponds to a Phidgets installation and a user need for remote hardware access.
  6. Scan the exact file. In File Explorer, right-click the executable and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender (the wording can vary by Windows edition). Review the detection name and action. Do not approve a firewall prompt simply because the filename looks familiar.

Compare instances when more than one appears

Multiple files with the same basename are not automatically duplicates or malware. Compare them side by side rather than ending every process at once. The most useful axes are the parent application, complete installation path, publisher, digital-signature status, version, file hash, startup trigger, network connections and whether the associated software was intentionally installed. Two files with different paths or hashes are separate objects even when Task Manager displays the same name.

Record which account launched each process and whether it starts only when a related application opens or persists after that application closes. A Phidgets copy launched with Phidgets software is a different risk profile from an identically named file launched by an unknown scheduled task. If you need vendor or administrator help, preserve the path, signature details, hash, detection name, parent process and approximate time the file first appeared. Do not rename or replace the file while collecting this information.

Is networkserver.exe safe or a virus?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A copy in the documented Phidgets directory, installed with software you chose, is consistent with a legitimate vendor component. A copy in a temporary or random location, an unexpected startup entry, an unknown publisher or a Defender detection makes the situation suspicious.

Windows Security provides antivirus and malware protection, but a clean scan does not prove that an unknown file is trustworthy. Examine the path, parent process, signature, hash, startup behavior and network destination together. Keep those details if you need help from your administrator, the software vendor or an incident-response team.

Signs that warrant immediate isolation

  • Microsoft Defender identifies the file or its behavior as malware or a potentially unwanted application.
  • The executable appeared without an intentional software installation or update.
  • It runs from %Temp%, %AppData%, a downloads folder or another location unrelated to the claimed product.
  • It has no credible publisher, an invalid signature or a name that differs from the installed product’s files.
  • It creates persistent startup entries, repeatedly returns after you end it or makes unexplained outbound connections.

Why networkserver.exe may use the network

Networking is normal for a network-server component: it may listen for client connections or contact another device. For Phidgets, remote control is the stated purpose. Network use from an unknown copy is not proof of malware, but it is a reason to verify the executable before granting access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Windows displays a firewall prompt, inspect the full path and publisher. Allow the program only on the network profiles and interfaces required by your setup. A rule for the wrong path can either fail to solve the problem or grant access to a different executable with the same basename. If you do not recognize the parent application, choose Cancel or Block while you investigate instead of accepting a broad rule.

How to stop networkserver.exe without damaging software

End one running instance

In Task Manager, select the process under Details and choose End task. This is temporary; the owning application or a startup entry can launch it again. If hardware or another application immediately stops working, restart the related program rather than deleting files.

Prevent automatic launch while investigating

In Task Manager, open Startup apps, select an entry clearly associated with the executable or its parent product and choose Disable. If the entry is a Windows service, open services.msc, identify the service by its verified display name and executable path, and set it to manual only if the product’s documentation permits that change. Do not disable an unidentified service solely because its name contains “network.” Record the original setting so you can restore it.

Uninstall the owning application instead of deleting the executable

If you no longer need the program, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Reboot, then check the recorded folder and startup entries. Manual deletion of a single executable can leave services, drivers, firewall rules or shared files behind and can break a legitimate installation.

Fix Phidgets Network Server visibility errors

A common Phidgets symptom is that Windows computers appear in the Phidgets software but attached Phidgets do not. Phidgets says Windows Defender Firewall can block Network Server in this situation.

  1. Confirm that the executable is the installed Phidgets file at C:Program FilesPhidgetsPhidget22NetworkServer.exe, or record the actual path if your installation differs.
  2. Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection and choose Allow an app through firewall (the classic Control Panel wording is Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall).
  3. Choose Change settings. If Network Server is listed, enable it only for the network profile you use. If it is not listed, choose Allow another app, browse to the verified executable and add it.
  4. Confirm that the rule points to the same full path you verified. Do not select a similarly named file from a temporary or downloads folder.
  5. Restart Network Server or the Phidgets application, then test the attached devices. If the devices remain invisible, check that the computer and hardware are on the intended network and that another firewall or endpoint policy is not blocking the connection.

Phidgets’ troubleshooting page covers this firewall scenario: Phidgets Troubleshooting Common Issues.

Firewall pitfalls to avoid

  • Do not create a rule for every program with the same basename; Windows rules should target the verified executable path.
  • Do not enable every network profile automatically. Use the profile required by the Phidgets setup and your organization’s policy.
  • Do not assume an allowed rule proves the file is genuine. Recheck the signature and scan result after software updates, because an unwanted file could be placed elsewhere.
  • If a managed computer prevents changes, ask the administrator rather than repeatedly adding rules or turning off the firewall.

Fix broader network errors associated with the process

If the symptom is wider than Phidgets—for example, several applications lose connectivity—treat it as a Windows TCP/IP problem rather than assuming the executable itself is broken. Back up the current network configuration before resetting it.

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator. Type the following commands exactly:
netsh -c interface dump > C:netConfig.txt
netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset
  1. Restart Windows. The first command saves interface settings to C:netConfig.txt; keep that file if you need to restore or compare configuration.
  2. Test the affected connection. If the failure remains, open Device Manager > Network adapters, note the adapter model and driver version, then update or reinstall the driver using a trusted manufacturer or Windows Update source.
  3. Check for third-party VPN, antivirus, virtualization or traffic-filter drivers. Temporarily removing or disabling a verified filter can identify conflicts, but record its settings and restore protection promptly.
  4. Start Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and select Safe Mode with Networking. If networking works there, a normal-startup service or driver is likely involved.
  5. Use a clean boot to isolate that component. Run msconfig, select Selective startup, clear Load startup items, and use the Services tab to hide Microsoft services before disabling the remaining third-party services. Restart and test, then re-enable items in groups until the failure returns. Restore normal startup when finished.

What the reset does and what it does not do

The interface dump creates a record before changes are made; it does not repair malware or identify which executable is responsible. The IP and Winsock resets address damaged Windows networking configuration, not an invalid firewall rule or a malicious process. Restart before judging the result, then test more than one application. If only the program associated with networkserver.exe fails, return to that product’s path, signature and firewall checks instead of repeating system-wide resets.

What to do when malware is suspected

  1. Isolate the computer. Disconnect Ethernet and turn off Wi-Fi. If it is a managed or business device, contact the administrator before making changes that could destroy evidence.
  2. Do not download a replacement executable. Never substitute a copy obtained from an unofficial website. Preserve the original path, file name, publisher, signature status, hash if available, detection name and parent process.
  3. Boot Safe Mode. Use Windows recovery options to start Safe Mode, which limits normal startup software and can prevent a persistent process from running.
  4. Run Microsoft Defender. Start a full scan. If a normal Windows scan cannot be trusted or the threat persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans before the normal Windows environment loads.
  5. Apply remediation and change credentials from a clean device. Follow Defender’s recommended quarantine or removal action. If the computer handled sensitive accounts while compromised, change passwords from a known-clean device and review account activity.
  6. Reconnect cautiously. After scans and updates complete, reconnect only when the detection is resolved and the parent application and firewall rules have been verified.

Can you delete networkserver.exe?

Do not delete it solely because the name sounds generic or because it uses the network. If it belongs to Phidgets, Samsung Recovery, GNSS Spider or another needed product, deletion can break that application. Uninstall the owning program, disable its startup entry or remove its firewall permission instead.

Deletion becomes reasonable only after you have confirmed that the file is malicious or orphaned, completed a security scan, preserved evidence and checked that no legitimate program depends on it. Security software may quarantine a malicious file automatically; follow its report rather than manually replacing or editing system files.

A practical decision checklist

  • Known path and known parent: verify the product installation and signature, then keep the file if its behavior matches the product.
  • Known product but blocked function: check the firewall rule for the exact executable path and correct network profile.
  • Unknown path or publisher: do not allow network access; scan, isolate if necessary and investigate the parent process.
  • Several applications have network failures: back up settings, run the documented TCP/IP reset, test drivers and isolate third-party services.
  • Defender detection or persistence: disconnect, use Safe Mode and Defender Offline, and retain evidence for support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is networkserver.exe?

It is an ambiguous executable filename, not a single Windows component. Phidgets documents NetworkServer.exe for remote Phidgets control, while Samsung Recovery and GNSS Spider records also use the basename. The full path and parent application identify which copy you have.

Is networkserver.exe safe or a virus?

A copy in the expected installation directory of software you intentionally installed can be legitimate. A temporary-folder copy, unknown publisher, invalid signature, unexplained startup entry or Microsoft Defender detection requires isolation and investigation. The filename alone cannot answer the safety question.

Why is networkserver.exe using my network?

A network-server component may listen for clients or communicate with another device. Phidgets specifically uses its Network Server for remote hardware control. Network activity from an unknown copy is not proof of malware, so verify the path, publisher, signature and destination before allowing it.

How do I stop networkserver.exe?

End the verified instance from Task Manager for a temporary stop. To prevent relaunch, disable the associated startup entry or service only after confirming its parent product and recording the original setting. If you do not need the software, uninstall that application instead of deleting one executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete networkserver.exe?

Do not delete it merely because the name is generic or it uses the network. Deleting a legitimate Phidgets, Samsung Recovery, GNSS Spider or other product file can break that program and leave services or firewall rules behind. Remove it manually only after a scan confirms malware or an orphaned file and you have preserved evidence.

How do I fix a Phidgets Network Server error?

Verify the installed file, then allow that exact executable through Windows Defender Firewall for the network profile you use. Add it with Allow another app if necessary, restart the Phidgets software and test again. Check for another firewall or endpoint policy if devices remain invisible.

What if several networkserver.exe files are running?

Record every full path and compare parent application, publisher, signature, version, hash, startup trigger and network behavior. Multiple legitimate products can reuse the basename. Do not terminate or allow all instances as a group.

What information should I give support?

Provide each full path, parent process and installed product, publisher and signature status, version, file hash when available, Defender detection name, startup behavior, firewall rule path and the symptoms’ timing. Preserve the original file rather than renaming or replacing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: networkserver.exe is a reused filename, not a verdict. Verify the path, parent product, publisher, signature, hash and Defender result before allowing network access or deleting anything. Use the exact Phidgets firewall rule for hardware-visibility problems, Microsoft’s TCP/IP and clean-boot workflow for wider connectivity failures, and isolate the computer and run Defender Offline when malware is suspected.
