NABVENTURES is not a single grant or startup scheme. It is NABARD’s wholly owned investment-management subsidiary, incorporated in April 2018 to manage alternative investment funds. Its best-known vehicle, Fund I, invests venture and growth equity in early- to mid-stage businesses across agriculture, food, rural services and agri/rural finance. A separate vehicle, AgriSURE, is a ₹750 crore Category-II Alternative Investment Fund sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and NABARD, with NABVENTURES serving as investment manager.
What NABVENTURES is
NABVENTURES Limited was incorporated as a public company in April 2018 and is wholly owned by NABARD. Its corporate purpose is to manage Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), rather than to operate farms, sell agricultural inputs or function as a conventional bank.
The company describes its vision as “To be the most trusted Investment Manager for driving rural prosperity.” Its stated mission is “Catalysing capital in innovative and sustainable ventures for transforming the Indian agriculture and rural landscape, in a fair and transparent manner.” Those are NABVENTURES’ own statements of intent; they are not independent measurements of investment performance.

The distinction between the manager and a fund matters. NABVENTURES is the organisation that evaluates opportunities, manages investments and oversees funds. Each fund has its own mandate, investors, corpus, risk profile and portfolio. Saying that a startup received “NABVENTURES funding” without naming the fund can therefore hide an important difference between Fund I, AgriSURE and any later vehicle.
How its agritech investment model works
Fund I is a venture-growth-equity fund
NABVENTURES describes Fund I as a venture-growth-equity fund for early- to mid-stage companies. Its stated universe extends beyond narrowly defined farm technology to include agriculture, food, rural businesses and agri/rural financial services. A company can therefore fit the mandate by solving a major problem in the wider rural value chain, even if it does not make a farm device or run a crop marketplace.

This breadth explains why a portfolio can contain soil testing, crop advice, rural distribution, food finance and processing businesses at the same time. “Agritech” is useful shorthand for the article’s subject, but it is not the complete Fund I mandate.

The published strategy prioritises startups or small and medium-sized enterprises addressing significant problems in agriculture, food or rural development. A pitch needs to show more than an interesting technology: it should make the problem, affected users, paying customer and potential scale understandable.

Technology with a practical edge
NABVENTURES says it looks for a technological edge, with particular mention of opportunities around pre-Series A fundraising. The edge could be software, data, biology, logistics technology or another defensible capability. Technology alone is not presented as sufficient; it is evaluated in the context of a large rural or food-system problem.
Domain-aware founders
The strategy values founding teams with domain knowledge and business experience. For an agritech company, that can mean a credible understanding of farm economics, procurement, distribution, regulation, food production or rural financial products, alongside the ability to build and sell a business.

Scalable, asset-light growth
Fund I says it prefers scalable, asset-light models. That preference does not rule out every business with physical operations, but it signals that the fund is looking for growth that does not require an uneconomic increase in owned land, warehouses, machinery or other fixed assets. The company still has to demonstrate that its operating model can expand beyond a small local market.
Differentiated business models
Differentiation can come from a proprietary product, a hard-to-replicate distribution network, unusual data, a specialised customer relationship or a business model that solves a known bottleneck better than incumbents. The strategy page mentions pre-Series A and Series A rounds, but it does not publish a complete eligibility checklist, a guaranteed cheque size or an assurance that a company at either stage will be accepted.
Fund I and AgriSURE: the distinction founders and readers need
AgriSURE is not a renamed version of Fund I. It is a separate fund with different sponsorship and a separately stated corpus, while NABVENTURES acts as its investment manager.

The different labels also signal different ways to read a company announcement. A Fund I investment reflects the Fund I mandate and deployment period. An AgriSURE investment belongs to a separate programme, even though the same investment manager may be involved.

Fund I capital figures and dates
The following figures come from NABARD’s 2024 publication unless another period is shown. They should not be read as a live dashboard: the deployment numbers are cut off at 31 March 2024.

“Sanctioned” is a dated commitment measure, not necessarily the same as cash already drawn, deployed or realised. The later annual-report statement that Fund I achieved full capital commitment also does not convert the 31 March 2024 figures into current portfolio values.

₹750 crore AgriSURE fund
A 2024 Government of India release from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and NABARD describes AgriSURE as a ₹750 crore Category-II AIF. The two named sponsors are the Ministry and NABARD, and NABVENTURES is the investment manager.
AgriSURE Direct Scheme
NABARD’s FY2024–25 annual report filing gives the AgriSURE Direct Scheme a ₹300 crore corpus. The same filing describes an overall target of approximately 85 startups over 10 years. That target is a programme objective, not a statement that 85 investments had already been completed.

Because the ₹750 crore fund size and the ₹300 crore Direct Scheme corpus describe different levels of the programme, they should not be added together or treated as interchangeable totals.

These are institutional impact and reach figures as reported by NABARD, not independent evaluations presented in the cited material. They may use different definitions—for example, “connected,” “enabled,” “facilitated” and “used”—so comparing them as if they were one standard performance metric would be misleading.
How a founder can assess fit
The public strategy is useful as a screening lens, not as a promise of funding. A founder considering a NABVENTURES-related conversation can test the business against these questions:
- Is the core problem agricultural, food-related or rural? Explain the economic cost, the users affected and why existing options are inadequate.
- Where is the technology or operating advantage? Identify what is proprietary, difficult to copy or measurably better, rather than presenting a generic digitisation claim.
- Does the team combine domain and business capability? Show who understands the customer, regulation, field operations and route to revenue.
- Can the model scale without fixed assets growing at the same rate? Describe unit economics, distribution, implementation and working-capital needs across new regions.
- What is the company’s actual stage? State revenue, customers, retention, pilots, capital raised and the round being considered. The published strategy mentions pre-Series A and Series A, but stage alone does not establish eligibility.
- Which fund mandate is relevant? A rural financial-services company, a food brand and a climate-resilient farm platform may all fit the broad ecosystem, but the appropriate vehicle and investment terms can differ.
The available public material does not establish current ticket sizes, a standard application workflow, deadlines, a complete eligibility rulebook or an open application portal. Founders should obtain current instructions directly from NABVENTURES’ official channels rather than infer them from a portfolio announcement.
What is known about Fund II
In October 2026, YourStory reported a ₹450 crore first close for NABVENTURES Fund II. This is secondary reporting. Detailed current terms, final corpus, investment period and an official confirmation were not established in the cited material, so the amount should be described as the latest reported first close, not as a definitive statement of Fund II’s final size or strategy.
Fund II should also not be confused with either the ₹598 crore Fund I corpus reported by NABARD in 2024 or the separate ₹750 crore AgriSURE fund.
