mtk_etw_log.exe appears to be a MediaTek SP Driver diagnostic and logging helper, not a standard Windows component. An observed copy ran from C:Program FilesMediaTekSP Drivertools, was identified as MediaTek.Inc. version 1.12.44.1, and created an Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) log. That does not make every copy safe: a sandbox report also recorded suspicious behavior from one installer sample. Verify the exact path, digital signature, hash, installer source and current antivirus result before allowing, deleting or reinstalling it.
What mtk_etw_log.exe is
The filename is associated with tools installed by a MediaTek driver package. In an ANY.RUN sandbox report, the executable appeared while MediaTek SP Driver v5.1632 was being installed. The report identified the company as MediaTek.Inc. and recorded version 1.12.44.1.

That sample was linked to logman.exe, the Windows command-line utility used to control Event Tracing for Windows sessions. The activity created a trace named MediaTek_COM_LOG_INIT and wrote COM_LOG.etl.001 below C:Windowssystem32LogFilesWMIMediaTek. In practical terms, the program appears intended to collect diagnostic information while a MediaTek driver or phone-flashing tool initializes communications. It is therefore different from a core Windows executable such as explorer.exe or svchost.exe.
The filename alone cannot establish what is on your computer. Malware can use a familiar name, and legitimate driver installers can place helper files in different folders or use a different release number. Treat the file as an unverified third-party component until the particular copy on your PC passes the checks below.

Why it may be running
- A MediaTek USB, chipset or smartphone service may start it during driver installation or device detection.
- A phone-repair or flashing utility may invoke the driver’s logging helper when it opens a communication session.
- The driver package may start an ETW session briefly, then exit after initialization. A corresponding
.etlfile can remain in the Windows log directory for troubleshooting. - An unrelated program may be impersonating the filename. A copy launched from a temporary download folder, a user profile folder or an unexpected drive needs closer examination.
Use Task Manager’s Open file location command while the process is running. The location shown there is more useful than the process name in isolation.
Is mtk_etw_log.exe safe?
There is no universal safe-or-malicious verdict for this filename. The cited sandbox sample was marked suspicious because it created System.dll in a temporary directory, ran a file with an unusual extension and created names resembling system files. Those observations are warning signals about that sample and its installer behavior; they do not prove that every MediaTek copy is malware.
Make the decision from several independent indicators. A valid signature from the expected publisher, a normal installation path, a driver package you intentionally installed and a clean current security scan together provide substantially more confidence than a filename match. Conversely, an unsigned file in a random directory, an installer obtained from an unknown site and security alerts should be treated as a potentially unwanted or malicious installation.

2. Check the Authenticode signature
In the file’s Digital Signatures tab, select the listed signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows says the signature is valid. The signer should make sense for the driver you installed. A missing signature is a reason to investigate, not conclusive proof of malware; some legitimate older packages are unsigned or use certificates that have expired.
PowerShell provides a second way to inspect the result. Open PowerShell and run the following, changing the path only if your file is elsewhere:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature -FilePath "C:Program FilesMediaTekSP Drivertoolsmtk_etw_log.exe"
Review the Status and SignerCertificate fields. Do not assume that a displayed publisher name is trustworthy if the signature status is not valid.

3. Calculate a hash for identification
A SHA-256 hash identifies the exact bytes of your copy. It is useful when asking the hardware vendor or your security team about a file, but there is no authoritative universal hash for every release of this executable.

Get-FileHash "C:Program FilesMediaTekSP Drivertoolsmtk_etw_log.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Save the resulting hash with the file path, version and date. A hash that differs from another download does not by itself prove either file is bad; releases and repackaged installers can legitimately differ.
4. Establish where the package came from
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows versions) for a MediaTek driver or phone tool.
- Look at the installer’s original download location, publisher information and date. Keep the installer only if you can identify its source.
- Ask which hardware requires the package. If you use a MediaTek phone, USB connection or chipset, record that dependency before uninstalling anything.
Avoid replacement executables from random DLL or EXE download sites. If the package is damaged, obtain a current driver from the device manufacturer or another source you have independently verified.
5. Scan with Windows Security
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Protection updates and select Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it.
- Allow the scan to finish. Review detected items and quarantine recommendations rather than restoring a file simply because its name looks familiar.
Microsoft’s general guidance for suspected unwanted software is to update security intelligence, run a full scan, uninstall software you do not need and use Microsoft Defender Offline when unwanted behavior persists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to fix mtk_etw_log.exe errors
The correct fix depends on the message and on whether the file is a legitimate component. Capture the wording, the path shown in the error and the action that triggers it. “The system cannot find the file,” “not a valid Win32 application,” a crash during phone detection and a security quarantine have different causes.

Fix 1: Restart after a driver change
Restart Windows after installing, updating or removing a MediaTek driver. A reboot closes stale driver processes and completes pending file replacement. Test the same operation again after Windows has fully loaded. If the error disappears, note which driver change preceded the restart rather than immediately deleting the executable.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the associated driver
- Disconnect the MediaTek phone or USB device unless the manufacturer’s instructions require it to remain connected.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and remove the MediaTek SP Driver or related package if it is clearly listed and no longer needed. On older Windows editions, use Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- If the package is not listed, open Device Manager, expand the relevant category such as Universal Serial Bus controllers or Ports (COM & LPT), identify the MediaTek device, right-click it and choose Uninstall device. Only select a driver-removal option when you are certain it belongs to the problem device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install an up-to-date package obtained from the phone, motherboard or device manufacturer. Confirm the publisher and signature before running the installer.
- Restart again, reconnect the hardware and test the operation that previously produced the error.
Removing a driver can break phone-flashing, USB or chipset functions until the correct package is installed. Record the device model and current driver version first so you can restore the required function.
Fix 3: Handle a missing-file message carefully
If Windows says it cannot find mtk_etw_log.exe, do not download a similarly named file from an unverified site. The original package may have been partially removed, quarantined or installed incorrectly. Check Windows Security’s protection history, then repair or reinstall the complete MediaTek package from a trusted source. A complete package is safer than copying one executable into a system folder.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 4: Respond to “not a valid Win32 application” or launch failures
- Confirm that the file is an executable with the expected
.exeextension and that File Explorer is not hiding a second extension such as.exe.scr. - Compare the file’s architecture and version with the driver package intended for your Windows edition and hardware.
- Check the signature and hash again. A damaged or replaced file should be quarantined or removed through the security product, followed by a clean reinstall.
- Do not disable Windows security controls to force an unknown file to run.
Fix 5: Investigate crashes, pop-ups or high resource use
A legitimate logging helper may run briefly during device initialization. Continuous CPU, memory or disk activity, unexplained pop-ups, or behavior unrelated to a MediaTek device warrants a security investigation. End the task only if doing so will not interrupt a firmware operation, disconnect the device safely, record the path and scan the file. If Windows Security identifies a threat, allow it to quarantine the item and follow the recommended cleanup steps.
Best Value
After the scan, uninstall software you do not recognize or need. If unwanted behavior returns after a normal restart, save important work, disconnect unnecessary devices and run Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows will restart and scan outside the normal desktop environment. Follow Microsoft’s on-screen recovery instructions when the scan completes.
Fix 6: When Windows blocks the file
Leave the file quarantined while you determine which installer supplied it. Do not turn off reputation or antivirus protection merely to complete an installation. Verify the source, signature and hash, then obtain a fresh driver package from the hardware maker if the original was damaged. If the file is confirmed as a false positive by the package provider, use that provider’s documented release rather than restoring an isolated executable from an unofficial download.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you remove mtk_etw_log.exe?
Do not delete it solely because it is unfamiliar or because it is not a Windows system file. If you actively use a MediaTek device or flashing utility, deleting the helper may cause driver installation or diagnostic functions to fail. Uninstall the complete driver package through Windows first, and keep a record of the hardware it serves.
Removal is more reasonable when all of the following apply:
- You no longer own or use the related MediaTek hardware or software.
- The package is identifiable in Installed apps and can be removed normally.
- You have checked Windows Security and found no pending cleanup action.
- You have backed up any driver installer or recovery information needed to restore the device later.
If the file is in a temporary or unrelated directory, unsigned, associated with suspicious behavior or detected by security software, quarantine it and investigate the installer rather than manually replacing it. Keep the quarantine record and hash if you may need to report the incident.
Choosing a remedy: safety, function and reversibility
| Remedy | Source and signature check | Preserves MediaTek function | Detection coverage | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inspect path, signature and hash | Directly verifies the copy and its publisher | Leaves the driver untouched | Does not scan for malware by itself | Fully reversible |
| Full Microsoft Defender scan | Independent of the installer’s claims | Normally leaves a clean driver available | Checks the file and other locations using current security intelligence | Quarantine can be reviewed |
| Repair or reinstall the complete driver | Depends on obtaining a trusted, signed package | Best option when the device is still required | Does not replace an antivirus scan | Usually reversible if the prior package is recorded |
| Uninstall an unused package | Uses the installed package’s recorded identity | May remove phone, USB or chipset support | Does not remove unrelated malware | Reversible only with a suitable installer |
| Delete one executable manually | Does not establish whether the file is genuine | Can leave a broken or partially removed driver | No malware-detection benefit by itself | Least reversible; avoid as a first step |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the filename: names are easy to copy. Check the path, signer, hash and origin.
- Calling the sandbox result a universal verdict: the reported behavior belongs to one installer sample, not every release.
- Downloading a replacement EXE: a single file from an unknown site may be tampered with or incompatible with the rest of the driver.
- Deleting before identifying the hardware: you may lose USB, chipset or flashing functionality.
- Disabling security controls: a blocked file should be investigated, not forced to run.
- Confusing an ETL log with the executable:
COM_LOG.etl.001is a trace output observed in the sample; it is not the same file asmtk_etw_log.exe.
When to seek further help
Escalate to the device manufacturer or a qualified technician when the signature is invalid, the installer source cannot be established, multiple security products flag the file, the device is needed for work, or reinstalling the trusted package does not resolve the error. Provide the exact path, version, SHA-256 hash, Windows edition, device model, error text and scan result. Do not send a suspicious executable to another person unless your organization’s security process specifically requires it.
