What mpv.exe is and why it appears in Windows
mpv.exe is the Windows program file for mpv, an open-source media player that handles many audio formats, video formats, codecs, and subtitle types. mpv is primarily controlled from the command line rather than through a conventional, full official graphical interface. You can start it by double-clicking a media file, opening a shortcut, or typing a command in Command Prompt or PowerShell.

mpv.exeis the GUI-subsystem executable normally launched from Explorer, a shortcut, or a file association.mpv.comis the console-oriented companion, useful when you want command output to remain visible in a terminal.
The project lists Windows 10 version 1607 or later as a supported baseline and advises keeping graphics drivers current on Windows. Support statements can change as Windows releases age, so check the current project documentation when deploying mpv on an older system.
mpv does not normally install as a traditional, deeply integrated Windows application. Many users extract an archive to a folder such as C:mpv, install it with a package manager, or use a build linked from the project site. That explains why you may see mpv.exe without a familiar entry in “Apps & features.”
Is mpv.exe safe or a virus?
A copy downloaded from mpv.io, installed through a recognized package manager, or obtained from a build provider listed by the project is generally the expected mpv program. The project notes that most Windows binary packages are unofficial third-party builds, apart from first-party continuous-integration builds. In practice, the publisher and download path matter as much as the filename.

- In Task Manager, right-click the mpv process and choose Open file location. A deliberately chosen media-player folder is more plausible than a randomly named directory under a temporary folder.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs when present. An absent signature does not automatically mean malware because many community builds are unsigned, but an unexpected publisher or bundled installer deserves investigation.
- Recall how you obtained it. A package-manager installation or an archive downloaded from a project-linked provider is easier to trust than an unsolicited attachment, cracked bundle, or “missing DLL” download.
- Scan the file or its archive with Windows Security. If a detection appears, do not immediately add an exclusion. Redownload from a trusted source and compare hashes when the provider publishes them.
Do not delete mpv.exe solely because its name appears in a process list. Conversely, do not assume every file with that name is genuine. An executable in a user-profile, temporary, or randomly generated directory, an unexpected network connection, or a repacked installer warrants a clean download and a full security review.

Why mpv has a larger security surface than a basic player
The mpv security policy describes the software as a desktop media player that is not designed to be exposed to untrusted environments
. mpv supports user scripts, subprocesses, inter-process communication, complex media parsing, playlists, and subtitle processing. Those features are useful, but they mean you should not run unknown scripts or repacked binaries and should treat media and subtitle files from untrusted sources cautiously. Keep the current stable release because the project says security updates are provided only for the most recent stable release.
Why mpv.exe may be running
Seeing mpv.exe in Task Manager is usually explained by an active playback session, a file association, a shortcut, a scheduled command, or a script that launched mpv. A player can remain open while paused, minimized, or waiting for the next item in a playlist. If no window is visible, use Open file location in Task Manager and inspect the command line in the Details tab. Close the player normally first; if it is unresponsive, select it in Task Manager and choose End task.
To determine whether it starts with Windows, open Settings > Apps > Startup or the Startup tab in Task Manager. Remove only an entry you recognize and no longer need. Also check the Startup folders and any scheduled task you created yourself; do not disable unrelated items merely because mpv.exe is present.
Install or verify a legitimate copy
- Choose a trustworthy source. Prefer
winget install mpv.mpv, Scoop, or a Windows build linked from mpv.io. Compare the build provider, update cadence, architecture, bundled dependencies, and any published signature or hash before choosing between packages. - Extract the complete archive. Do not copy only mpv.exe out of a downloaded folder. The build may require DLL files, scripts, fonts, shaders, or other support files beside the executable.
- Open a new terminal after installation. Environment-variable changes are normally picked up by newly opened Command Prompt or PowerShell windows, not by terminals that were already running.
- Test the version command. Run
mpv --version. A successful response proves that Windows can locate and start the executable, although it does not by itself prove the file is authentic. - Test a known-good local file. Use a media file you already trust, for example
mpv "C:UsersyouVideostest.mp4". A local test separates installation problems from a damaged stream, network source, or unusual codec path.
Add mpv to PATH
If you want to type mpv from any directory, add the folder containing mpv.exe to PATH:

Win, search for Environment Variables, and open Edit the system environment variables. - Choose Environment Variables.
- Under User variables (or System variables if every account needs it), select Path and click Edit.
- Click New, enter the mpv folder, such as
C:mpv, and confirm every dialog. - Open a new Command Prompt or PowerShell window and run
mpv --version.
To distinguish PATH trouble from a broken installation, run the executable by its full path, such as C:mpvmpv.exe --version. If the full path works but mpv does not, correct PATH rather than downloading another copy.
Fix “mpv.exe is not recognized” or “mpv.exe not found”
These messages usually mean that the terminal cannot find the executable, the archive was not fully extracted, or the command was typed from a directory that does not contain mpv.exe.
- Use File Explorer to locate the actual file. Turn on View > Show > File name extensions so you do not mistake a similarly named file for mpv.exe.
- Run the full-path version test described above. If it fails, reinstall or re-extract the complete build from a trusted source.
- If the full path succeeds, add the containing directory to PATH and open a new terminal.
- Check for a blocked download: right-click the archive, choose Properties, and look for an Unblock option before extracting again. Do this only when you trust the source.
- Do not download an isolated DLL from an unrelated “DLL fix” website. Missing support files should be restored by re-extracting the matching build.
Fix mpv.exe opening and closing immediately
Start mpv from Command Prompt or PowerShell so an error remains visible instead of disappearing with a double-clicked window.
- Change to the installation folder, for example
cd /d C:mpv. - Run
mpv.exe --version. If this fails, replace the installation from a trusted build. - If the version command works, play a known-good local file with
mpv.exe "C:pathtotest.mp4". - If playback fails while the version command succeeds, test a clean configuration. Close mpv, then temporarily rename the user configuration directory or the individual configuration files. Restore them later and add settings back incrementally.
On Windows, user configuration is commonly under %APPDATA%mpv or %LOCALAPPDATA%mpv, depending on the data type and build. A portable_config directory beside mpv.exe makes mpv use a self-contained configuration and related-data location. A bad mpv.conf, input.conf, script, shader, or input setting can stop normal startup. Renaming the directory rather than deleting it preserves a recovery copy.

Fix black video, stutter, video-output errors, or playback crashes
Update or roll back the graphics driver
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates, including optional driver updates when appropriate.
- For a direct check, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the adapter, and choose Update driver.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available.
- If necessary, uninstall the device from Device Manager and install the current driver supplied for your exact graphics hardware and Windows edition. Restart before retesting.
mpv’s Windows guidance specifically recommends current graphics drivers. A driver update or rollback is more appropriate than installing an unrelated codec pack, because current mpv builds include the decoding components intended for that build.
Reduce rendering complexity for a diagnostic test
Try a simpler video-output configuration or run mpv --profile=fast "C:pathtotest.mp4" on low-power hardware. This is a troubleshooting test, not a promise that the setting is ideal for every system. If the simpler profile works, re-enable custom shaders, high-quality scaling, scripts, and other options one at a time to identify the trigger.
Separate a file problem from a player problem
- Play a second, known-good local file. If only one file fails, it may be damaged or encoded in a way that exposes a decoder or driver issue.
- Copy a network or removable-drive file to local storage and test again. This removes connection and storage latency from the diagnosis.
- Temporarily disable custom scripts, shaders, and unusual input bindings by using a clean configuration.
- Record the exact terminal error and the file type before changing several settings at once; otherwise you may lose the clue that identifies the fault.
Fix “This app can’t run on your PC” and compatibility warnings
Confirm that the build architecture matches the machine and that the Windows version meets that build’s requirements. An old third-party package may target a different architecture or depend on an outdated runtime.

- Check the build’s stated architecture and minimum Windows version before downloading another archive.
- Right-click mpv.exe, choose Properties > Compatibility, and run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter if Windows offers it.
- Install current device drivers and Windows updates, then retest.
- If the build is old, replace it with a current package from a recognized source instead of relying indefinitely on compatibility-mode overrides.
Repair associations after moving mpv.exe
Windows registrations and shortcuts refer to a specific executable path. Moving the mpv folder can therefore leave stale associations or a shortcut that points to a file that no longer exists.
- Update any shortcut’s Target field to the new mpv.exe location.
- Update PATH if you use command-line launches.
- Run the build’s registration command again from the new location, following the syntax documented for that build.
- Use the corresponding
--unregisteroption to remove stale registrations when supported. All-users registration may require administrator rights. - In Settings > Apps > Default apps, choose mpv for the file extensions you want it to open, or use Open with > Choose another app and select the new executable.
Registration behavior can vary among Windows builds, so avoid copying registry files from another computer. Re-registering from the current folder is safer than importing unknown entries.
What to do if Windows Security quarantines mpv.exe
- Do not whitelist the file immediately.
- Note the detection name, file path, and the source from which you obtained the package.
- Remove an unofficial repack or bundled installer and download a clean archive from mpv.io or a recognized provider.
- Scan the new archive before extraction. Compare a published hash when the provider supplies one.
- If Windows Security continues to flag a trusted build, submit the file through Microsoft’s normal false-positive reporting process and use another recognized build while the result is reviewed.
A filename match is not proof of malware, but an unexpected path, unsigned repack, or installer that bundles unrelated software is a reason to stop and investigate. Keep your security software enabled while testing.
Configuration, cache, and watch-later locations
The manual documents these Windows locations:

Do not erase configuration as a first resort. Rename the relevant directory, keep a backup, and test one change at a time. If the clean profile fixes the issue, restore only the files you can identify as necessary.

How to remove mpv.exe completely
- Close every mpv window and end any remaining mpv process in Task Manager.
- Remove mpv from Settings > Apps > Installed apps if you installed a package that created an uninstall entry. Extracted portable builds usually have no uninstaller.
- Delete the extracted mpv folder only after saving playlists, scripts, shaders, and configuration you want to keep.
- Remove stale PATH entries, shortcuts, startup entries, and file associations that point to the deleted folder.
- Check
%APPDATA%mpvand%LOCALAPPDATA%mpvif you also want to remove user settings and cache. Back up anything you may use with a later installation. - Run a Windows Security scan if you removed the file because of suspicious behavior. If you suspect an active compromise, disconnect the affected device from sensitive networks and follow Microsoft’s malware-remediation guidance rather than relying only on deleting one executable.
Choosing between Windows mpv builds
When several packages are available, compare the attributes that affect trust and maintenance rather than choosing solely by filename:

The official project distinguishes third-party Windows packages from first-party CI builds. Read that distinction before choosing a package, and keep a record of the source so a future security alert can be investigated quickly.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Confirm the path and source of mpv.exe.
- Run
mpv --versionor the full-path equivalent. - Play a known-good local file.
- Test with a clean configuration by renaming the relevant configuration directory.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver if playback is black, unstable, or slow.
- Check architecture, Windows requirements, and compatibility settings.
- Repair PATH, shortcuts, and associations if the executable was moved.
- Replace the build only after recording the error and choosing a recognized source.
This order limits destructive changes and tells you whether the fault is discovery, installation, configuration, rendering, media content, or Windows integration.
