mouse-server-luminati.exe is associated with the Mouse Server Luminati application, not with Windows itself. ThreatInfo lists multiple files from this product family as PUP.Gen (a potentially unwanted program detection). One exact-file record reports a 232 KB executable, MD5 8d8f2b6d35b5705e6240a5a1e2b6cacc, published by 深圳市油桃科技有限公司 (Shenzhen Youtao Technology Co., Ltd.). Historical Mouse Server documentation also describes sharing idle device resources through the Luminati SDK. Those facts make an unexpected copy worth investigating rather than automatically trusting or deleting.

A filename alone cannot identify the file on your computer. Verify its full path, hash, signer, installation source, associated application and current Microsoft Defender result. The procedure below shows how to preserve evidence, remove unwanted software, scan Windows, and clear the startup or file errors that can remain after removal.

What mouse-server-luminati.exe is

The name belongs to the Mouse Server/Luminati product family. It is not a standard Windows component, so a copy appearing in a random download folder, a temporary directory or an unfamiliar application directory deserves scrutiny. ThreatInfo’s product index lists two hashes under the Mouse Server Luminati name:

Record MD5 Reported details
Exact-file entry (2025) 8d8f2b6d35b5705e6240a5a1e2b6cacc 232 KB; publisher 深圳市油桃科技有限公司; product Mouse Server Luminati (c002)
Second product entry 7bccb77e33eb59997326eb0498d5eb22 Listed under the same product family (c003)

Both product-level records are labelled PUP.Gen. That label means the security product considers the software potentially unwanted; it is not the same as proof that every file with this name is identical or that it carried out a particular criminal behavior.

What the available telemetry shows

An ANY.RUN sandbox report attributed a Mouse Server process to the same company and recorded connections to clientsdk.lum-sdk.io and perr.lum-sdk.io (c004). These are historical sandbox observations. They provide context about one observed sample, not a guarantee that every copy on every computer behaves in the same way.

Why the Luminati reference matters

A historical doctoral thesis reproduces a Mouse Server consent screen stating: “Your use of ‘Mouse Server’ is free of charge in exchange for safely sharing some of your device’s idle resources for the benefit of others.” The thesis also identifies the Luminati SDK in the application (c005). If you did not knowingly agree to that arrangement, the software may be unwanted even if it was installed alongside another program.

Is it safe?

Do not call an unexpected copy safe merely because Windows displays a publisher name or a digital signature. A signature can help establish who signed a file; it does not independently establish that the program’s behavior is desirable. Conversely, a filename or a generic detection cannot prove that your local file is one of the exact samples in a threat database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the following evidence together before deciding what to do:

Check What a result tells you How much weight to give it
Full path Shows where the executable was installed and whether it belongs to a program you recognize. Useful context, but a familiar-looking folder can be copied.
MD5 or SHA-256 hash Identifies the exact bytes in your file. Stronger than a matching filename; compare with a reputable record.
Digital signature and signer Shows whether Windows can verify the signing certificate and its publisher. Confirms signer identity only; it is not a safety verdict.
Install source and date May connect the file to Mouse Server or a bundled installer. Helpful for deciding whether you intentionally installed it.
Microsoft Defender result Reports what the current security intelligence identifies. Use the latest definitions and a full scan, not an old screenshot.
Network behavior Can show connections associated with the running process. Historical endpoints are risk context, not proof about every copy.

If the file matches the 232 KB record and MD5 8d8f2b6d35b5705e6240a5a1e2b6cacc, that is a strong reason to treat it as potentially unwanted. If it does not match, the file still requires a current scan; a different hash is not automatically safe.

What PUP.Gen means in practice

PUP.Gen is a broad potentially unwanted program classification. It can be applied when software has unwanted bundling, advertising, privacy, resource-use or other characteristics, even when a scanner does not classify it as a destructive virus. The label is therefore a reason to investigate and remove software you did not request, not a finding that proves credential theft, ransomware or another specific action. Read the exact Defender detection and its remediation status rather than relying only on the short name.

Before removing anything: preserve evidence safely

  1. Do not double-click the executable. Do not use “Run as administrator” and do not open it to see what happens.
  2. Record the complete path. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and copy the location and file name. Take note of the file size, creation date and version information.
  3. Record the signer. In Properties, open Digital Signatures if that tab exists. Select a signature and choose Details to see whether Windows reports it as valid and which signer is shown.
  4. Calculate hashes without launching the file. Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell, change the quoted path to the one you recorded, and run:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm MD5 "C:fullpathmouse-server-luminati.exe"
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathmouse-server-luminati.exe"

PowerShell reads the file to calculate the digest; it does not execute the program. Save the output with the path and date so you can compare it with a security report or provide it to an analyst.

How to interpret the comparison

A matching MD5 identifies the same byte sequence as the listed sample, although SHA-256 is preferable when a service requests it. A nonmatching hash means only that your copy differs; it does not certify that the copy is clean. A valid signer for Shenzhen Youtao Technology Co., Ltd. can support the claimed publisher, but a valid certificate does not override an unwanted consent model or a current antivirus detection. Conversely, an unsigned file is not automatically malicious, so combine the result with its path, installer history and scan verdict.

Do not upload the file to an online scanner from a confidential or managed computer without approval. Hash-only searches disclose less than uploading the executable. If you need a definitive review, retain the original path and hash and use Microsoft’s file-submission process.

Remove Mouse Server or another unwanted installation

Uninstall through Windows Settings

  1. On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Search for Mouse Server, Mouse Server Luminati, or a recently installed program you do not recognize. Check the install date and publisher before selecting anything.
  3. Select the entry, choose Uninstall, and complete the program’s removal wizard. Microsoft recommends removing unneeded applications from these Apps pages when unwanted software is suspected (c001,c006).
  4. Restart Windows when the uninstaller requests it. Do not reinstall the application merely to replace a missing executable or repair a startup message unless you have independently decided that you need and trust the software.

If Settings does not list it

Look in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features for the same product or an installer added on the same date. Remove only an entry you can identify; do not uninstall a Microsoft component just because its name is unfamiliar. If neither location contains it, continue with the scans and startup checks rather than downloading a replacement installer.

Check for bundled installation

Think back to software installed shortly before the file appeared. Mouse Server may have arrived with a utility, game, browser download or other installer rather than through a Windows component. Remove the parent application only when you recognize it as unwanted, and record its name and install date. Do not delete random folders under Program Files or AppData while an uninstaller is available; manual deletion can leave services, scheduled tasks or startup references behind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Defender and run a full scan

Microsoft’s stated response to suspected unwanted software is to obtain the latest security intelligence and then run a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan (c001). Use an administrator account for these steps:

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Protection updates and select Check for updates. Wait until the security intelligence update completes.
  3. Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and select Scan now.
  4. Leave the computer powered on while the scan checks all accessible files. Review the result under Protection history.

You can perform the same operations in an elevated PowerShell window:

Update-MpSignature
Start-MpScan -ScanType FullScan

Do not infer that a clean quick scan clears the issue. A full scan is the relevant check when an unwanted executable has been found or its location is uncertain. If another antivirus product is active, verify which product is providing real-time protection and avoid running conflicting real-time engines at the same time.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when detection persists

If Defender cannot remove the item, reports that it is in use, or detects it again after a restart, run the Offline scan. It starts a trusted scanning environment before the usual Windows processes load, which can help with files that restart themselves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save open work and connect the computer to AC power.
  2. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
  3. Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), choose Scan now, and confirm the restart.
  4. Allow the computer to reboot and finish the scan. After Windows starts again, open Protection history to read the action taken.

From an elevated PowerShell window, the equivalent command is:

Start-MpWDOScan

Microsoft lists Offline scan as the next step when unwanted software is not removed by a normal scan (c001). If the computer belongs to an employer or school, follow its incident-response policy before deleting evidence or resetting the device.

Fix common mouse-server-luminati.exe errors

“Windows cannot find mouse-server-luminati.exe” at startup

This usually means an autostart entry still points to a file that has already been quarantined or deleted. It does not mean you should download the executable again.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Startup (Windows 11) or Task Manager > Startup (Windows 10 and 11).
  2. Disable an entry named Mouse Server or one whose publisher and path match the file you recorded. Do not disable a clearly identified Windows security component.
  3. Open Task Scheduler and inspect Task Scheduler Library for a task that launches the same path. Delete a task only after confirming its action points to the unwanted executable.
  4. Restart and check whether the message returns.

Advanced users can inspect the per-user and machine-wide Run keys in Registry Editor: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun. Export a key for backup before removing a value, and remove only the value that references the recorded file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The code execution cannot proceed” or a missing DLL message

These messages often appear when part of an application has been removed. If the related Mouse Server program is unwanted, do not solve the message by downloading an isolated DLL from a third-party site. Finish the uninstall, remove the stale startup reference, restart, and run the full Defender scan. If another trusted application also reports a missing system file, use Windows Update and the application’s official repair option rather than copying DLLs from the web.

Repeated crashes, freezes or high resource use

Open Task Manager and identify the process path from Details rather than relying on the display name alone. If the path matches the recorded executable, end the task only to allow removal or scanning; do not keep relaunching it for testing. Uninstall the associated program, scan with updated Defender, and use Offline scan if it returns. Historical resource-sharing language explains why an unexpected Mouse Server installation may be unacceptable, but it does not establish a specific CPU or memory percentage for your computer.

Unexpected network activity

If a firewall or network monitor shows the process connecting to clientsdk.lum-sdk.io or perr.lum-sdk.io, record the timestamp, process path and remote host. Those endpoints were observed in one historical sandbox report and can help an analyst correlate activity. They are not, by themselves, proof that the local file is malicious or that the same endpoints are contacted by every release. Avoid blocking random system services until you have identified the executable; remove an unwanted application and scan it instead.

Defender keeps detecting the file after removal

  1. Open Protection history and note whether the action was quarantine, removal or allowed.
  2. Run Full scan again after updating definitions, then run Offline scan if the detection returns.
  3. Check the original path, temporary download folders and startup locations for another copy. Compare hashes rather than deleting every file with a similar name.
  4. If the result remains uncertain, retain the path and hash and use Microsoft’s file-submission process for analysis (c001,c006).

Access denied when deleting the file

Do not take ownership of a system folder simply to force deletion. Restart after uninstalling, then try the scan again. If a process has the file open, use Task Manager to end the matching process after verifying its path. When normal Windows cannot remove it, run Microsoft Defender Offline or start Windows in Safe Mode and repeat the uninstall and cleanup. Preserve the hash before removal if you may need to submit the file.

When to change passwords or investigate further

The available records do not establish credential theft by mouse-server-luminati.exe. Do not reset every password solely because this filename appeared. Consider broader incident response only if you also find unexplained account activity, unauthorized software, unknown administrator accounts, browser changes or other security alerts. In that case, use a separate trusted device to change important credentials, enable multifactor authentication, and contact your organization’s administrator or a qualified incident responder.

How to decide whether deletion is complete

  • Mouse Server is absent from Windows Settings and Control Panel.
  • The original executable path no longer contains the file, and no verified copy remains in another location.
  • Startup apps, scheduled tasks and Run entries no longer reference it.
  • Updated Defender Full scan and, when necessary, Offline scan report no remaining detection.
  • You have retained the path, hashes and scan results if the case needs to be escalated.

There is no published independent prevalence rate or infection count for this filename. The practical conclusion rests on your local evidence: an unexpected file associated with a product family carrying PUP.Gen detections should be removed through the normal uninstall and Defender process, while a deliberately installed copy should still be evaluated against its consent, resource-sharing behavior and current scan result.

Prevent a repeat installation

Review download and installer screens instead of accepting every default option. Read consent language that mentions sharing device resources, and decline optional components you do not need. Keep Windows and Defender security intelligence current, and periodically review Settings > Apps > Installed apps and Settings > Apps > Startup for software you no longer recognize. On a managed computer, report unexpected software to the administrator rather than modifying it yourself.

Keep a short incident record containing the discovery date, full path, file size, MD5 and SHA-256 values, signer, install source, Defender action and whether the file returned after a restart. That information prevents repeated guesswork and gives Microsoft or an incident responder something concrete to review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you prefer an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files; it also offers settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, includes a free trial by category of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus protection rather than replacing it, and results vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mouse Server Luminati a virus?

ThreatInfo lists multiple Mouse Server Luminati samples as PUP.Gen, a potentially unwanted program classification. That is a warning to investigate and remove software you did not request, but it does not prove that every file with this name is identical or performed a specific malicious action.

Can I delete mouse-server-luminati.exe?

First record its path and hashes, then uninstall Mouse Server through Windows Settings or Control Panel. Run updated Microsoft Defender Full and, if needed, Offline scans. Avoid deleting only the executable if an uninstaller or startup entry remains.

Why does Windows detect Mouse Server Luminati as PUP.Gen?

The product family has multiple records carrying the PUP.Gen label. Historical Mouse Server consent language describes sharing idle device resources through the Luminati SDK, which may be unwanted when installed without clear consent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a valid publisher signature prove?

It can verify the signer shown by Windows, such as Shenzhen Youtao Technology Co., Ltd., but it does not independently prove that the software is safe or wanted. Compare the signer with the hash, path, install source and current scan result.

What if my hash does not match the listed MD5?

A different hash means your file is not the exact listed sample. It is not a clean bill of health. Submit the file or hash for analysis and rely on an updated Defender scan, path, signer and installation history.

Why does the error appear after Defender removed the file?

A startup entry, scheduled task or Run-key value may still point to the quarantined path. Disable or remove only the entry that references the recorded executable, restart, and scan again. Do not download a replacement copy.

Should I change all my passwords?

The documented records do not establish credential theft by this file alone. Change credentials and investigate more broadly if you also see unexplained account activity, unknown administrators, browser changes or other security alerts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I submit a suspicious copy?

Retain the full path, file size, MD5 or SHA-256, signer and Defender history, then use Microsoft’s file-submission process. Follow your employer’s or school’s policy before uploading or deleting files from a managed computer.

The Bottom Line

mouse-server-luminati.exe is not a Windows system file. Because Mouse Server Luminati samples are listed as PUP.Gen and historical documentation describes Luminati resource sharing, treat an unexpected copy as potentially unwanted. Verify its path and hash, uninstall the associated program, update Defender, run a Full scan, and use Defender Offline if the detection returns. A filename or valid signature alone cannot establish safety.
