Monstera deliciosa fruit is edible only when fully ripe. Eat only the creamy pulp from sections whose green scales have loosened naturally and whose pulp releases easily from the core. Unripe fruit—and other parts of the plant—can cause painful mouth and throat irritation.
What does Monstera deliciosa fruit look like?
The fruit grows as an elongated, corn-cob-shaped spike covered in overlapping green, tile-like scales. Creamy pulp lies beneath them. It is also known as ceriman or fruit-salad plant fruit. Indoor Monsteras rarely flower or produce fruit, according to UF/IFAS Extension.

How can you tell when the fruit is ripe?
Ripening is gradual, usually progressing from the base toward the tip, so judge each portion by its own signs rather than by a set number of days. UF/IFAS Extension says mature fruit lightens from green and the segments at its base begin to separate slightly. North Carolina State Extension describes it as ripe once the scales fall off naturally.
- Wait for the covering to loosen and fall away on its own.
- Eat only pulp that releases easily from the core; do not pry off firmly attached scales or eat the firm section beneath them.
- Do not use elapsed time alone as proof of ripeness. UF/IFAS gives 5–6 days at 78–82°F as guidance for finishing a harvested fruit at room temperature, but that interval does not guarantee that every portion is safe to eat.
Why is unripe Monstera fruit risky?
Unripe portions contain calcium oxalate crystals. These needle-like crystals can penetrate the membranes of the mouth and cause painful irritation. UF/IFAS warns that exposure can irritate the mouth and throat; Queensland’s Poisons Information Centre describes immediate burning pain and swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat after plant parts are eaten or chewed.

Can ripe fruit still cause a reaction?
Yes. Queensland’s Poisons Information Centre says ripe fruit may cause rapidly developing hives: a transient, swollen, itchy rash. Ripe fruit is considered edible, but that does not mean everyone will tolerate it; the cited sources do not establish a way to predict an individual reaction.

What does it taste like, and how is it eaten?
Extension sources compare the tropical flavor to banana and pineapple. Fully ripe pulp can be eaten fresh or used in desserts, drinks, or ice cream. UF/IFAS advises against eating large quantities at one time because the fruit contains substantial oxalic acid.
