Mike Flanagan’s new Exorcist film, titled The Exorcist: Martyrs, starts as an NYPD homicide investigation into killings staged to evoke Catholic saints’ martyrdoms—and turns into a supernatural story about evil and possession. Scarlett Johansson stars as detective and single mother Julie Miller. Universal currently lists the film for theaters on March 12, 2027.
What is The Exorcist: Martyrs about?
Julie Miller, an NYPD homicide detective and single mother, investigates a string of murders staged to recall the martyrdoms of Roman Catholic saints. Her 12-year-old son, Max, is part of the story, as is fellow detective Gina Restrepo, who works with Julie on the case.

How does the film mix crime thriller and supernatural horror?
Flanagan describes the movie as a serial-killer thriller that brings together the investigative tension of films such as Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs with the religious horror of The Exorcist. That is his description of the film’s aims; the disclosed plot centers on the murders, the investigation and a threat that may be otherworldly.
He frames the story around a question: “What do we do about the problem of evil?” In the interview, he says religious horror can confront the horrors of being alive, adding, “In fiction, we can stare the devil in the face.” The result, as he presents it, is not simply a police case with religious imagery: the story asks whether people are acting under the influence—or direct control—of evil.

The Exorcist: Martyrs is presented as a new story with new characters in The Exorcist universe—not a remake or retelling of William Friedkin’s 1973 film. The 2026 reporting also says it is not connected as a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. Flanagan says the film is intended to stand on its own, while leaving open the possibility of connective threads to classic franchise elements. So “a new standalone story within the franchise” is the clearest description, rather than a claim that it has no links at all.

For context, TheWrap reported that The Exorcist: Believer grossed $137 million worldwide. That figure concerns the 2023 film, not Martyrs.
When does The Exorcist: Martyrs come out?
Universal’s film page currently lists a theatrical release date of March 12, 2027. TheWrap also reported the title and date on October 6, 2026. This is the current announced date, not a guarantee that the schedule cannot change.

The project announcement from TheWrap says Flanagan would write, direct and produce the film, with Universal distributing. Its October 2026 title report identifies Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment and Red Room Pictures among the production partners.
Is Martyrs based on the novel Legion?
No. Flanagan named William Peter Blatty’s novel Legion as an inspiration and called it “a wonderful novel,” but the film is described as having a brand-new plotline and characters. An influence is not the same as an adaptation.
