What Is Melanotan II? Risks, Side Effects, and Why It Isn’t an Approved Tanning Treatment

Melanotan II is a synthetic peptide marketed to darken the skin by increasing melanin production. It is not an approved tanning treatment in the United States or Australia. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has described marketed Melanotan II as an unapproved new drug, while Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) says melanotan products are prescription-only, not approved as tanning agents, and not listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).

Regulators have reported side effects and serious safety concerns, and testing of seized products found that the amount of Melanotan II did not consistently match the label. Any color produced by melanotan is not a substitute for sunscreen or other protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

What Melanotan II is and how it is supposed to work

Melanotan II (often written as Melanotan 2 or MT-2) is a laboratory-made peptide promoted in some injectable and nasal-spray tanning products. It is intended to stimulate the body’s melanin production, creating darker skin without deliberate exposure to tanning beds or sunlight. Product labels may use the names Melanotan I or Melanotan II; the TGA describes both as synthetic peptides associated with a tanned appearance.

Melanin is the pigment that gives skin, hair and eyes their color. Increasing pigmentation can make skin look darker, but a cosmetic change in color does not establish that a product is safe, effective for medical use, or protective against UV damage. Marketing claims have included protection from sunburn or skin cancer, but the FDA’s enforcement record does not support those claims.

Why the route and label do not make it approved

Melanotan II has appeared in products sold online as injections, nasal sprays and other formulations. Calling a product “peptide,” “research use,” “natural tanning,” or “triple strength” does not give it regulatory approval. Approval depends on evidence of quality, safety and effectiveness for a specific intended use, along with authorization to market the product in a particular country.

Is Melanotan II FDA approved?

No. In an FDA fiscal-year 2007 enforcement report, the agency said it had issued an August 30, 2007 warning letter concerning the illegal sale and marketing of Melanotan II. The FDA described it as an unapproved new drug promoted as an injectable tanning product and said there was no evidence that it was generally recognized as safe and effective for its labeled uses.

That record is historical enforcement context, not a claim that the 2007 letter was the only or most recent FDA action. It does establish that the product described in that record was not an FDA-approved tanning medicine. The FDA status should not be expanded into a worldwide legal conclusion; each country sets its own rules.

What is Melanotan II’s status in Australia?

The TGA warned on January 24, 2025, that melanotan tanning products were being promoted and sold online. It says melanotan is prescription-only in Australia, is not approved as a tanning agent, and that no products containing it are included in the ARTG. A prescription-only classification is not the same as approval for cosmetic tanning: the TGA’s consumer warning specifically says these products are not approved for that purpose.

On August 17, 2026, the TGA reported laboratory testing of seized nasal-spray products. The agency confirmed Melanotan II in the samples and said no Melanotan II products were included in the ARTG or approved for supply in Australia. These findings describe Australian regulation and should not be treated as a legal summary for every other country.

What side effects and risks have regulators reported?

The TGA lists the following among commonly reported effects of melanotan products:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Facial redness

The same warning identifies additional reported concerns specifically associated with Melanotan II, including increased moles and freckles, kidney dysfunction and brain swelling. The TGA source does not provide incidence percentages or a population risk rate. These are regulator-reported effects and concerns, not outcomes that every user will experience.

Changes in moles and freckles

New or changing pigmented spots deserve medical attention regardless of whether melanotan was used. If you notice a rapidly changing mole, an irregular border, multiple colors, bleeding, persistent itching or a new lesion that does not settle, arrange an examination with a qualified health professional. Do not assume that a darker spot is simply an expected tanning effect.

Kidney and neurological concerns

Kidney dysfunction and brain swelling are serious medical concerns, not routine cosmetic side effects. Severe headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual drowsiness, weakness, seizure, fainting, markedly reduced urination or swelling should be treated as reasons to seek urgent medical care. Tell clinicians exactly what product you used and when, and bring the container if it is available.

Why the products themselves are unpredictable

Unapproved products have not undergone the quality controls applied to authorized medicines. The TGA says consumers cannot be certain of an unapproved product’s ingredients, strength or overall quality. A label may be incomplete, inaccurate or unrelated to the contents, and the same brand name does not guarantee that different batches contain the same material.

The TGA’s 2026 investigation illustrates the problem. Five seized nasal-spray bottles were labeled “Pure Tans Triple Strength 30 MG.” Based on the labeled 20 mL bottle volumes, testing estimated between 22 and 54 mg of Melanotan II across those five bottles. That range applies only to the sampled bottles; it is not a measurement of every product sold under that name or of all melanotan products. The variation demonstrates why a printed strength cannot be treated as a dependable dose.

Why online descriptions are not evidence of quality

  • “Laboratory,” “professional,” or “research” wording does not show that a product was manufactured under medicine-quality standards.
  • A certificate or test image posted by a seller may not identify the tested batch or prove that the bottle in your possession matches it.
  • Nasal sprays and injectables can be contaminated during manufacture, filling or handling, even when the active ingredient is present.
  • Storage conditions can alter a peptide, and consumers generally cannot verify temperature history or sterility.

Because the evidence does not establish reliable composition or contamination control, attempting to calculate a personal dose from an internet label is unsafe.

Does Melanotan II protect against sunburn or skin cancer?

No. Pigmentation caused by melanotan is not equivalent to the protection provided by a sunscreen product labeled with a sun-protection factor (SPF). The TGA states that melanotan-induced pigmentation does not protect against UV exposure in the way suitable sunscreen does.

The FDA explains that only a sunless-tanning product containing sunscreen ingredients and carrying an SPF label may provide sun protection. A cosmetic self-tanner without those ingredients does not automatically protect skin. The FDA also describes a tan as a sign of UV skin damage and says there is no such thing as a safe tan.

What effective UV protection looks like

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF stated on the label, and follow its reapplication directions.
  • Use shade, tightly woven clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking eyewear when practical.
  • Limit exposure when the sun is strongest and avoid intentional tanning beds.
  • Remember that sunscreen reduces UV exposure; it does not make prolonged exposure risk-free.

These measures address UV exposure. They do not treat a reaction to melanotan or reverse an adverse effect.

What to do if you have used a melanotan product

  1. Stop using the unapproved product. The TGA advises recent users of unapproved tanning products containing melanotan to stop.
  2. Contact a health professional. Explain the product name, formulation, approximate timing of use and any symptoms. Medical advice is especially important if you have new or changing moles, persistent nausea, severe headache, reduced urine output or other concerning changes.
  3. Seek urgent care for severe symptoms. Emergency symptoms such as confusion, seizure, fainting, severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting or signs of a serious allergic reaction require prompt emergency assessment.
  4. Keep the packaging for identification. A clinician or poison-information service may need the label, batch information and formulation. Do not send a product to another person for testing or use.
  5. Dispose of remaining product safely. The TGA’s 2026 advisory says Australian consumers can take remaining product to a local pharmacy for safe disposal. Disposal rules differ elsewhere, so follow local pharmacy or hazardous-medicine guidance rather than pouring unknown material down a drain.

How Melanotan II compares with legitimate tanning choices

There is no approved Melanotan II tanning product to compare with another approved version in the U.S. or Australian regulator material. The practical distinction is between UV protection and cosmetic coloration:

Goal What the product or method does What to check Important limitation
Protect skin from UV Reduces UV exposure when used as directed A sunscreen ingredient list and an SPF label Does not treat melanotan exposure or guarantee complete protection
Cosmetic color without deliberate UV exposure Creates the appearance of a tan on the skin’s surface Directions, ingredient list and any separate SPF claim A sunless tanner may provide no UV protection unless sunscreen ingredients and an SPF are specifically labeled
Melanotan II products Intended to increase pigmentation through a synthetic peptide No approved tanning indication in the cited U.S. and Australian records Uncertain ingredients and strength, with regulator-reported side effects and serious concerns

A self-tanning lotion can change appearance without intentional UV exposure, but it should be treated as a cosmetic choice, not as a medical treatment or proof of safety. Read the label for any separate SPF claim; color alone is not protection.

Common questions about Melanotan II

Is Melanotan 2 the same as Melanotan I?

They are different synthetic peptides, but both names appear on products promoted for tanning. The TGA warns about melanotan products generally and identifies additional concerns reported with Melanotan II. A similar name does not indicate that either product is approved as a tanning agent.

Can a prescription make Melanotan II safe for tanning?

Regulatory status and medical supervision are separate issues. Australia’s TGA describes melanotan as prescription-only while also saying it is not approved as a tanning agent. A prescription-only classification does not turn an unapproved cosmetic product into an authorized tanning treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are side effects guaranteed?

No. The TGA reports effects and concerns but does not provide incidence rates. The absence of a reported symptom does not prove that a product is safe, particularly when ingredients and strength may be uncertain.

Can I use sunscreen while taking Melanotan II?

Sunscreen can reduce UV exposure, but it does not make melanotan safe, remove its side effects or prevent problems caused by contaminated or inaccurately labeled products. Stop using the product and speak with a health professional if you have used it.

Is Melanotan II legal where I live?

The cited sources establish an FDA unapproved-new-drug finding in the United States and TGA restrictions and non-approval in Australia. They do not determine the law in every country. Check the medicines regulator or pharmacist in your jurisdiction for current local rules.

The bottom line for anyone considering Melanotan II

Melanotan II is an unapproved synthetic peptide marketed for tanning, not an established substitute for sunscreen or a risk-free way to change skin color. U.S. and Australian regulators have identified it as unapproved for tanning, reported adverse effects and serious concerns, and highlighted inconsistent product strength. If you have used it, stop, contact a health professional and follow local pharmacy guidance for disposal. For appearance alone, use a clearly labeled cosmetic sunless tanner; for UV protection, rely on products with an SPF label plus sensible sun-protection practices.
