The two forms most often discussed in vertebrate coloration are eumelanin, typically associated with black to brown shades, and pheomelanin, typically associated with yellow to reddish shades.
Color is not determined by pigment name alone. The amount, chemical quality, location, three-dimensional arrangement, tissue structure and lighting all affect what an observer sees. Some animal colors come from other pigments or from microscopic structures that manipulate light rather than from melanin at all.

What is melanin?
Melanin is not one single chemical but a family of related biological pigments. It contributes to coloration by absorbing some wavelengths of light and leaving the remaining light to reach an observer. Because the absorbed wavelengths depend on the pigment’s chemistry and physical arrangement, melanin can help create a range of dark, warm and muted animal colors rather than one universal shade.
The best-characterized animal melanins in the comparative literature are eumelanin and pheomelanin. Researchers often discuss them in relation to hair, skin, eyes, feathers and other integumentary tissues, especially in mammals and birds. That focus should not be mistaken for a complete description of every animal group: amphibians, reptiles, fish and insects use melanin in systems with different cells, structures and functions.

A visible patch of color is therefore an outcome of a biological system. It reflects which pigment is present, how much has accumulated, where it is located, how it is packaged, what other pigments or reflective materials surround it, and what light illuminates the animal.
Eumelanin and pheomelanin: the two principal forms
Both major forms are made through related melanogenic pathways, but their typical color ranges differ. These ranges are tendencies, not guarantees that a particular molecule will produce one exact visible color in every tissue or species.
| Pigment type | Typical color range | Where it is discussed most often | What controls the final appearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eumelanin | Black to brown | Hair, skin, eyes and feathers of vertebrates | Amount, chemical properties, particle organization, tissue location and lighting; other pigments or structures may contribute |
| Pheomelanin | Yellow to reddish | Hair, skin, eyes and other vertebrate tissues | Amount, chemical properties, distribution and interaction with surrounding tissue and light |
In their 2003 comparative review, Ito and Wakamatsu describe animal hair, skin and eye color as depending on melanin’s quantity, quality and distribution. Their analysis also distinguishes the pigments chemically through degradation products that can be measured with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). That approach is important because a visual inspection alone cannot reliably identify which melanin, mixture or structural effect produced a color.

Melanocytes synthesize the pigment
In mammals and birds, specialized pigment cells called melanocytes synthesize melanin. The biochemical pathway converts precursor molecules through a series of enzyme-controlled reactions. The exact pathway details and regulation vary among species and tissues, but the general result is the formation of eumelanin, pheomelanin or a mixture of both.
Melanocyte activity can change during development, molt or hair growth, and in response to genetic signals. A change in production does not automatically translate into a simple all-over color change: the timing and location of production matter just as much as the total amount.
Melanosomes act as pigment packages
Newly made melanin is packaged into membrane-bound organelles called melanosomes. These packages can differ in size, shape, internal organization and pigment content. Such differences influence how efficiently they absorb light and how they are distributed within a cell or transferred to neighboring tissues.

In a mammalian hair fiber or a bird feather, melanosomes are deposited as the appendage forms. Darker regions can result from more melanin, a higher concentration of melanosomes, larger or more heavily pigmented packages, or a particular arrangement along the growing structure. A pattern can therefore be encoded in space and time rather than by switching between entirely different pigments.

Deposition creates local color and pattern
Melanin reaches tissues including skin, hair and feathers. The same animal may have different pigment mixtures in different body regions because local cells receive different developmental signals. Stripes, spots, masks and bands can arise when pigment production or deposition is turned on, reduced or stopped in repeating spatial domains.
In feathers and hair, the position of pigment within a growing shaft is especially important. A dark band followed by a pale band can record a change in melanocyte activity during growth. In skin, the depth of pigment and its position relative to scattering tissue can alter apparent brightness and hue.
Why pigment quantity, quality and distribution matter
Quantity changes darkness and saturation
More absorbing pigment usually makes a tissue appear darker because less incident light is returned to the observer. However, the relationship is not a simple universal scale. Pigment particles can be sparse but optically efficient, or abundant yet arranged in ways that allow more scattering and a lighter appearance. The surrounding tissue also affects how much light reaches and leaves the pigment layer.
Chemical quality changes the wavelengths absorbed
Eumelanin and pheomelanin absorb light differently, which helps explain their typical black-brown and yellow-red associations. Chemical variation within either broad class can shift the balance of wavelengths absorbed. Mixtures of the two forms can produce intermediate or less saturated colors, especially when combined with unpigmented tissue or other pigments.

Distribution creates boundaries and patterns
Where melanin is placed can matter as much as how much exists. Pigment concentrated near a surface may appear more intense than the same amount buried deeper in tissue. A regular arrangement of dark and light regions creates visible bands, spots or gradients. In feathers and hair, the longitudinal position of melanosomes within a fiber can produce stripes or ring-like markings.

Light conditions change the observed color
The color an observer reports is produced by an interaction between tissue and illumination. Daylight, shade, indoor lighting and the angle of observation contain different wavelength mixtures. The vertebrate-pattern literature specifically notes that environmental light conditions can influence appearance. A color that looks black in one setting may reveal brown, red or iridescent components in another.
How pattern mechanisms differ among animal groups
Mammals and birds: pigment in growing appendages
Mammals and birds rely substantially on melanin deposition in epidermal appendages. Melanocytes place melanosomes into hair shafts, skin or feathers as these structures develop. Regional changes in pigment production and transfer can create the familiar contrasts of mammal coats and bird plumage.
This mechanism explains why a newly grown segment can differ from an older segment and why molt, hair replacement or feather replacement can reveal a changed pattern. It does not mean every mammal or bird color is melanin-based; carotenoids and structural effects also contribute to many appearances.

Amphibians, reptiles and fish can generate color through three-dimensional arrangements of pigment-containing and light-reflecting cells in the integument. A 2023 review of vertebrate coloration describes several commonly discussed cell types:
- Melanophores contain dark melanin and can alter how much of the underlying or overlying tissue is visually masked.
- Xanthophores contain yellow pigments; related erythrophores contain red pigments. Terminology and cell composition vary among species.
- Iridophores contain reflective materials that interact with light and can generate bright or shimmering effects.
These cells may be arranged in layers, with one cell type above or below another. A dark melanophore layer can modify the appearance of yellow or red pigment, while reflective iridophores can return selected wavelengths toward the observer. Because the arrangement is three-dimensional, changing cell position or pigment dispersion can alter a pattern without changing the animal’s total pigment inventory.
These examples describe mechanisms reported for particular vertebrate groups, not a single blueprint used by every amphibian, reptile or fish. Species differ in cell types, tissue architecture, developmental control and the degree to which they can change color.

Melanin is only one source of animal color
Other pigments can contribute
Carotenoids and other pigment families can add yellow, orange, red or other colors. Animals may obtain some pigments from food, synthesize others, or combine several classes in the same tissue. A red feather, orange skin patch or yellow scale cannot be assigned to melanin from appearance alone.
Structural color comes from light-manipulating architecture
Structural coloration arises when microscopic or nanoscopic features scatter, reflect or interfere with light. Layer spacing, particle size, crystal-like arrangements and other tissue structures can select particular wavelengths or produce angle-dependent effects. Iridophore-based reflectors in some fish, reptiles and amphibians are examples of structures that can work alongside pigments.
Structural color can make a surface appear blue, green, metallic or iridescent even when the relevant effect is not caused by a blue or green pigment. Melanin may still be present underneath or around the structure, where it absorbs stray light and increases contrast, but it is not necessarily the direct source of the apparent hue.
Appearance cannot identify chemistry by itself
Because pigmentary and structural mechanisms can overlap, a photograph or visual observation is insufficient to establish pigment chemistry. Investigators may need microscopy, spectroscopy, chemical analysis or developmental evidence to distinguish eumelanin, pheomelanin, carotenoids and structural reflectors.
What melanin does beyond visible coloration
In insects, melanin has reported roles that extend beyond making the exoskeleton dark. The insect and higher-animal melanogenesis literature describes melanin in cuticle hardening, wound healing and innate immune responses, as well as exoskeletal pigmentation.

During wound responses, melanin-related reactions can help isolate or seal damaged areas. In innate immunity, melanin deposition and associated reactive chemistry can participate in defenses against invading organisms.

These functions should be framed as reported insect roles, not as universal jobs of melanin in every animal. Reviews of insect melanogenesis also note that parts of the melanogenic and sclerotinogenic pathways remain unresolved. Mechanistic details therefore need to be tied to the organism and process being discussed rather than generalized across all animals.
How scientists distinguish the main melanins
Color descriptions are useful starting points but do not prove pigment identity. Chemical methods provide stronger evidence. Ito and Wakamatsu’s 2003 comparative review discusses degradation products characteristic of eumelanin and pheomelanin and their analysis by HPLC. In practice, researchers can combine such chemical measurements with microscopy to determine where pigment is located and how it is organized.
A robust interpretation generally asks several questions:
- Which pigment molecules or degradation products are detected?
- Are the particles located in melanocytes, melanosomes, hair, feathers, skin or another tissue?
- Are carotenoids or other pigments present at the same site?
- Do microscopic structures indicate scattering, reflection or interference effects?
- Could the illumination or viewing angle explain part of the reported color difference?
This combination prevents a common error: treating a typical color association as a one-to-one chemical diagnosis.
Common misconceptions about melanin and animal color
“Every dark animal color is melanin.”
Melanin often contributes to dark coloration, but darkness can also result from other absorbing materials, tissue thickness or a combination of pigments and structures. Chemical or microscopic evidence is needed for a definitive assignment.
“Eumelanin always looks black and pheomelanin always looks red.”
The standard ranges are useful shorthand: eumelanin is generally black to brown and pheomelanin generally yellow to reddish. Actual appearance depends on quantity, chemical variation, distribution, neighboring tissues and light.
“One pigment mechanism explains coloration in all animals.”
Vertebrate groups use different cells and tissue arrangements, and insects use melanin in physiological processes that are not simply extensions of mammalian hair or bird-feather pigmentation. Mechanisms must be described in their biological context.
“A brighter color means more pigment.”
Brightness can increase because of reflective structures, scattering or changes in tissue architecture, even when pigment quantity stays constant. Conversely, additional absorbing pigment can reduce brightness while leaving hue broadly similar.
Putting the mechanism together
Animal color is best understood as the product of a sequence: cells synthesize pigments, package them, deliver them to a tissue, arrange them in space and expose the resulting surface to light. Eumelanin and pheomelanin provide two important pigment families within that sequence, but they operate alongside other pigments and structural features. The visible result is therefore a biological and optical property, not a label that can be read from color alone.
