It compiles instrumentation manifests and message-text files into resources and source files used by applications; it is not a general Windows runtime process.
A copy in an expected Windows SDK Bin directory, carrying a valid Microsoft signature, is normally legitimate. A copy found in a download, temporary folder, or another user-writable location needs investigation. The safest response to an error is to verify the file’s provenance, use the SDK’s developer environment, and repair or reinstall the SDK rather than downloading a replacement executable.

What mc.exe does
Microsoft’s documentation describes it this way: "The Message Compiler (mc.exe) is used to compile instrumentation manifests and message text files." Developers use it when building software that writes structured event or diagnostic messages. The input files normally have .man (manifest) or .mc (message-text) extensions.
During a successful build, mc.exe can create a C or C++ header, a resource-compiler script, and binary message-resource files. Typical generated names include filename.h, filename.rc, filenameTEMP.bin, and language-specific files such as Msg00001.bin. The exact set depends on the switches and language definitions in the input.

The tool also supports generation of logging code for user-mode, kernel-mode, C#, and legacy MOF scenarios. The -A and -mof options are deprecated, so a new project should follow the current Message Compiler reference and avoid adding those switches unless an older project specifically requires them.
mc.exe is a build-time utility. It is not required for ordinary Windows startup, web browsing, or everyday document work. If you see it in a build log, the build system is trying to turn message definitions into resources; if you see it running unexpectedly outside a development workflow, verify its location and signature before allowing it to continue.
Where a legitimate copy is normally located
The expected provenance is a Windows SDK or a Visual Studio installation that includes the SDK tools. The executable is normally below an SDK Bin directory. Windows can have several SDK versions installed, so more than one legitimate copy may exist.

You can search common SDK locations from PowerShell with Get-ChildItem -Path '${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}Windows Kits' -Filter mc.exe -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue. This may take a while on a large installation. Treat the result as a list of candidates, not proof that every file is safe.
For a specific candidate, right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. PowerShell provides another check: Get-AuthenticodeSignature 'C:pathtomc.exe'. Replace the example path with the actual file path and confirm that the status is valid and the signer is Microsoft.
Is mc.exe safe, or could it be malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that question. Malware can use a familiar name, while a legitimate SDK binary can look suspicious simply because most users never encounter it. Use several pieces of evidence together: the full path, the digital signature, the process that launched it, and the result of a current security scan.

- The file has no valid Microsoft signature or its properties identify another publisher.
- It launches when no development tool is open, or a newly installed unknown program launches it.
- Your security software quarantines it or reports behavior unrelated to a build.
Microsoft Support recommends a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan when unwanted software is suspected. In Windows 11 and Windows 10, open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan. A full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan because it examines files across the system.

If the file is the expected SDK binary and a scan appears to be a false positive, keep the path and signature information available before reporting it. Do not disable protection broadly just to make a build proceed. If the copy is untrusted, quarantine or remove it according to Windows Security’s recommendation and reinstall the SDK from Microsoft’s installer rather than copying an executable from an unknown mirror.
No authoritative prevalence figure establishes how often mc.exe errors occur, and there is no reliable count of malicious files using that name. The practical test is evidence about your particular file, not a statistic about the filename.
Fix “mc is not recognized as an internal or external command”
This message means the shell could not find an executable named mc.exe in the current directory or in the effective executable search path. It usually indicates a missing SDK component, an ordinary Command Prompt being used instead of the toolchain environment, or a PATH entry that points to a different SDK version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that an SDK or Visual Studio installation exists. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for the Windows SDK or Visual Studio installation you use. For Visual Studio, open Visual Studio Installer, select the installed edition, and choose Modify to inspect individual components. A project that needs mc.exe must have a Windows SDK component installed.
- Locate the executable. Use File Explorer to search the Windows Kits folders, or run the PowerShell search shown above. Record the complete path to the copy whose signature and parent installation you have verified.
- Use the matching developer command environment. From the Start menu, open the Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt or Developer PowerShell that matches the project and architecture. These environments set SDK and compiler variables for the session. Run
where.exe mc.exeagain; the expected SDK path should now appear. - Test the command in that shell. Enter
mc.exewithout project arguments. A usage or diagnostic response confirms that the shell can start the executable. It does not prove that a particular manifest will compile, so continue with the project’s normal build after this check. - Correct the project executable path. If the build system has its own tool directories, add the verified SDK
Bindirectory there or select the SDK version intended by the project. Prefer the project’s documented configuration over a machine-wide change when multiple projects need different SDKs. - Use a temporary PATH change to diagnose the problem. In Command Prompt, the session-only form is
set PATH=C:verifiedsdkBin;%PATH%. In PowerShell, use$env:Path = 'C:verifiedsdkBin;' + $env:Path. Replace the example directory with the real path, then runwhere.exe mc.exeand retry the build. A temporary change disappears when that shell closes. - Make a permanent change only when appropriate. If every project on the computer should use the same SDK directory, open System Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables, edit the relevant user or system
Pathvalue, add the verified directory, and open a new terminal. Avoid adding several old SDK directories in arbitrary order; PATH precedence can silently select the wrong version.
The Microsoft Q&A example dated March 16, 2022 describes this class of failure as a path or toolchain-selection problem. The important distinction is between making mc.exe visible and choosing the version that the project actually supports.

Fix a build that invokes the wrong or old mc.exe
Having mc.exe on PATH is not enough if a build selects an incompatible copy first. Run where.exe mc.exe and Get-Command mc.exe -All in the same environment used by the build, not in an unrelated terminal. Compare every returned path with the SDK version selected in the project and with the paths configured by your build system.
Clean up path precedence
- Remove stale Visual C++ or Windows SDK directories from the project’s executable search list.
- Place the intended SDK directory ahead of older entries only after verifying its signature and compatibility.
- Close and reopen terminals, IDEs, and build agents after changing environment variables; already-running processes retain their old environment.
- Check build scripts, CI variables, and wrapper files for an explicit path that overrides the machine PATH.
Account for legacy projects
Very old Visual C++ 6 projects may not integrate cleanly with modern SDK layouts or message-compiler output. In that situation, replacing a legacy tool with the newest executable can create different errors. Use a toolchain known to support the project, or build the legacy code in an isolated environment while keeping current projects on a supported SDK. Do not overwrite files inside an SDK directory to force compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Repair an incomplete or corrupted SDK installation
If the file is missing from an installation that should contain it, or if several SDK tools fail at once, repair the installation instead of downloading mc.exe separately.
- Save your work and close Visual Studio, build terminals, and agents that may be using SDK files.
- Open Visual Studio Installer from the Start menu.
- Select the affected Visual Studio installation and choose Modify. Confirm that the Windows SDK component required by the project is selected.
- If the component is present but files appear damaged, choose More > Repair where that action is offered. Repair reinstalls components while preserving the installation’s normal configuration.
- If setup reports a download or component failure, retry the operation and check the installer’s known-issues guidance. A restart may be required before a second attempt.
- Reopen the matching developer command prompt and run
where.exe mc.exeafter setup completes. - If the problem continues, collect the Visual Studio Installer setup logs and use Microsoft’s problem-reporting route. The Visual Studio installation troubleshooting guidance updated November 4, 2025 covers repair, retry, known-issue checks, problem reports, and log collection.
For a standalone Windows SDK installation, use its official installer or the Windows installation components provided by Microsoft. Do not take mc.exe from a different computer: the executable may depend on matching SDK files, headers, libraries, or resource definitions.
Best Value
When mc.exe starts but compilation fails
A command-not-found problem and a compiler diagnostic are different issues. Once the executable starts, read the complete mc.exe message and identify whether the failure concerns an input file, encoding, an output directory, or a downstream resource-compiler step.
Check the inputs
- Confirm that the referenced
.manor.mcfile exists at the path shown in the build command. - Check the working directory. Relative paths are resolved from the process’s current directory, which may differ between an IDE, a terminal, and a CI agent.
- Make sure the file is not locked, partially generated, or excluded by source-control rules.
- Verify that the input uses the encoding expected by the project and by the installed Message Compiler version.
Check encoding and switches
The official reference documents options including -cp, -h, -r, -x, and -z for encoding and output control. Do not copy switches from a different project’s build file without checking what each option means in your installed SDK version. A code-page mismatch can turn otherwise valid message text into parsing errors or malformed generated resources.
Check output locations and permissions
- Ensure the output directory exists and that the build account can create and overwrite files there.
- Check whether an old header, resource script, or binary file is marked read-only.
- Use a short, local output path for a diagnostic build if the normal path is deeply nested or contains unusual characters.
- Compare the generated
.h,.rc, and.binfiles with the files expected by the project before investigating a later linker or resource-compiler error.
Run the command from the same environment and with the same arguments that the build system records in its log. Testing a simplified command can identify whether the executable works, but it cannot validate the project’s complete manifest, language resources, and output settings.

- Pause the build and note the exact path, detection name, and action taken by Windows Security.
- Check the file’s properties and Microsoft signature. A signed file in the installed SDK is materially different from an unsigned look-alike with the same name.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan using Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan.
- Review recent downloads, scheduled tasks, and the program that launched the file if the path is unexpected.
- Only after confirming the expected SDK provenance should you submit a suspected false positive through Microsoft’s reporting process. Keep protection enabled while investigating.
If Defender removes a legitimate SDK file, repair the SDK installation after the scan rather than restoring an unverified copy. If the file is not part of your SDK, leave it quarantined or remove it as directed by Windows Security and investigate the program that placed it there.
Should you delete mc.exe?
Do not delete a legitimate SDK copy merely because its name is unfamiliar. Removing it manually can break projects, Visual Studio components, or future repairs. If you no longer need the SDK, uninstall the related SDK or Visual Studio component through Settings > Apps or Visual Studio Installer.
For an untrusted copy, first preserve the path and scan information needed to understand where it came from. Then allow Windows Security to quarantine or remove it, uninstall the associated unwanted application if one exists, and run a full scan. Reinstall the official SDK only after the system is clean.
Choosing the right repair approach
| Situation | Best first action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| mc.exe is not recognized, but the SDK is installed | Use the matching Developer Command Prompt and correct the project’s executable path. | The file is present; the shell or build configuration is not finding it. |
| Several SDK tools are missing or setup files are damaged | Modify or repair the SDK/Visual Studio installation. | Reinstalling the component restores the complete, matching toolset. |
| Several mc.exe copies are found | Compare paths and signatures, then fix PATH or project precedence. | The first discovered copy may be old or incompatible even when it is legitimate. |
| A legacy VC++ 6 project fails with a modern SDK | Use a compatible toolchain or an isolated legacy build environment. | Older project integration may not support current SDK layouts. |
| An unexpected copy is flagged or unsigned | Stop, scan with Windows Security, and do not download a replacement from a mirror. | Provenance and security evidence must be established before execution. |
| The executable runs but reports a manifest or message-file error | Check input paths, encoding, switches, and output permissions. | The problem is now in compilation inputs or outputs rather than command discovery. |
For most developers, the sequence is straightforward: verify the path and signature, open the correct SDK environment, correct PATH or project settings, and repair the official installation if files are absent. Keep legacy projects on a compatible toolchain and treat any copy outside the expected installation as untrusted until proven otherwise.
Quick Recap
