What’s actually slowing this PC down?

mbrfix.exe is a legacy, third-party command-line utility associated with Systemintegrasjon AS, not a standard Windows component. Its documented purpose is repairing master boot record (MBR) code on older Windows systems. The filename alone cannot prove that a copy is genuine or safe. Because MBR utilities can change the code that starts a computer, verify the file and use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and Microsoft’s supported repair tools before attempting any third-party operation.
What mbrfix.exe is
Metadata for the original utility describes the product as “MbrFix Application,” a Win32 executable whose comments mention MBR repair for Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 and Windows PE. Technical references associate it with Systemintegrasjon AS (sysint.no), document a -h help switch and describe fixmbr operations.

Those descriptions identify a type of program, not every file named mbrfix.exe found on a current PC. Anyone can rename an executable. A copy in a temporary folder, an unsolicited archive, a software crack or an unknown download should be treated as untrusted until it has been checked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe tool belongs to the BIOS/MBR era. Most newer computers boot in UEFI mode from a GPT disk, so an MBR-writing utility may be irrelevant or dangerous on that hardware. Windows has its own recovery environment and boot-repair commands; those should be the starting point for a boot failure.

Is mbrfix.exe safe?
There is no filename-based safety verdict. Assess the particular file using its source, location, publisher information, digital signature and hash, then scan it. A legitimate-looking name does not make an executable trustworthy, and the absence of a warning does not prove that it is clean.
Check where the file came from
- Do not run a copy received in an unsolicited email, torrent, crack package or random download bundle.
- Do not replace a missing copy by downloading an arbitrary EXE and placing it in
C:Windowsor another system directory. File-reference guidance specifically cautions against this practice. - If the program came with an old recovery disc or a known internal IT toolkit, record that chain of custody before using it.
Check its path and publisher
In Task Manager, right-click a process named mbrfix.exe and choose Open file location. A location that you do not recognize is a reason to stop, not a reason to grant administrator rights. In File Explorer, open Properties and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A missing or invalid signature is not automatic proof of malware, but it removes one useful trust signal. The legacy references do not establish a current Microsoft signature or a current publisher release.
Verify the file with Windows commands
Open PowerShell, change the path to the exact file you are checking, and run:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:pathtombrfix.exe"
Get-FileHash "C:pathtombrfix.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Use the signature result to see whether Windows considers the signature valid, and save the SHA-256 value for comparison with a hash supplied by a trusted administrator or the original distributor. There is no authoritative current hash in the available file metadata, so a hash that cannot be matched to a trusted reference should not be treated as proof of authenticity.

Why MBR programs deserve extra caution
An MBR program can write boot code or alter partition-related metadata before Windows loads. Microsoft explains that bootkits can start before the operating system and that Secure Boot and Trusted Boot protect the startup chain. Microsoft has also documented MBR-overwriting malware, including Trojan:Win32/WipMBR.B (an encyclopedia entry dated 14 February 2012) and Virus:DOS/Sigru (19 September 2007). These historical examples do not show that every alert involving mbrfix.exe is malware; they show why an alert should be investigated rather than dismissed because the name sounds familiar.
Can you delete mbrfix.exe?
Because it is not a standard Windows component, deleting an unneeded copy will not remove a Windows feature. First determine whether an administrator, recovery procedure or old script still calls it. If it is merely an installer in Downloads or a temporary extraction, scan it and remove it or quarantine it if you do not need it. If it is installed with a larger program, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10) to remove that program instead of deleting individual files.
Do not delete a copy while it is being used to diagnose an active boot problem, and do not delete anything from a recovery partition or an administrator’s repair toolkit without confirming its purpose. Removing the executable will not undo an MBR change that has already been written to a disk.
Why mbrfix.exe may be running
- An old repair script, deployment image or recovery task may invoke it from the command line.
- A bundled utility or legacy backup product may launch it when checking boot records.
- A scheduled task or startup entry may be calling a copy left behind after an uninstall.
- Malware may use the familiar name to disguise an unrelated executable.
In Task Manager, note the command-line path and parent process if available. You can also list matching processes from an elevated Command Prompt with tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq mbrfix.exe". Do not end a process or allow it to run with administrator rights until its origin and purpose are clear.

Before repairing a boot error
Protect data first
If Windows still starts, copy important files to a separate drive or a trusted backup service. Boot-sector and partition work can make an existing failure worse, and repair commands are not a substitute for a backup. If the device is encrypted with BitLocker, locate the recovery key before changing boot components; Microsoft warns that non-Windows MBR changes can force recovery mode or prevent normal startup.
Determine whether the computer uses MBR or GPT
Do not assume that an old MBR utility applies to a modern PC. In Windows, open Disk Management, right-click the system disk and choose Properties > Volumes to view the partition style. From WinRE or an administrator Command Prompt, you can also run:
diskpart
list disk
exit
In the list disk output, an asterisk in the GPT column indicates GPT. UEFI firmware normally boots GPT installations, while legacy BIOS installations commonly use MBR. If the layout and firmware mode do not match the assumptions of the repair instructions, stop and document the configuration before writing anything.

Supported manual fixes for mbrfix.exe-related boot errors
1. Enter Windows Recovery Environment
- If Windows works, open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, then choose Advanced startup > Restart now. You can also hold Shift while selecting Restart.
- If Windows will not load, interrupt startup two or three times by holding the power button during the early boot phase. Windows may enter WinRE automatically.
- At the recovery screen choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Have the BitLocker recovery key available if requested.
2. Run Startup Repair first
Select Startup Repair and choose the Windows installation when prompted. Microsoft describes Startup Repair as a built-in recovery tool for problems that prevent the operating system from starting. It can address damaged MBR code, boot configuration data (BCD), system files, incompatible drivers and certain registry errors. Let the process finish and restart once; do not repeatedly interrupt it.

3. Use Bootrec only when command-line repair is needed
If Startup Repair does not resolve the problem, return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt. Microsoft documents this command for rewriting the master boot code:
BOOTREC /FIXMBR
Microsoft states that BOOTREC with /FIXMBR overwrites only the master boot code. It may not repair a damaged partition table, and it does not by itself prove that the underlying disk, BCD, file system or firmware configuration is healthy. Confirm that the disk is an MBR installation before running it, then type exit and restart.
4. Use installation or WinRE media if the internal recovery environment will not start
A Windows installation USB or a separately created WinRE drive can provide the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options tools when the recovery partition is unavailable. Microsoft lists corrupted MBR, partition-table, boot-sector, boot-manager and BCD metadata as situations in which bootable media may be required. Boot the media in the same firmware mode used by the installation where possible, then try Startup Repair before using BOOTREC /FIXMBR.

5. Scan offline when malware is possible
If an antivirus alert names mbrfix.exe, the file appeared unexpectedly, or the MBR changed without your action, do not assume a false positive. Disconnect the computer from untrusted networks, preserve evidence such as the file path and hash, and use a trusted offline scanner such as Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security or recovery media. Microsoft’s malware guidance recommends booting from a safe source when an MBR-changing threat may be active. Clean the system first; repairing the MBR before removing an active bootkit can allow the change to return.

When an MBR-era utility is the wrong tool
UEFI/GPT systems use a different boot architecture from BIOS/MBR systems. Applying an MBR-specific writer to a GPT installation can overwrite code that is not part of the expected startup path and make recovery harder. Microsoft provides MBR2GPT.exe for supported conversions from MBR to GPT; conversion is a separate, planned operation, not a generic response to a boot error. Check hardware firmware mode, partition layout, encryption status and backup coverage before considering it.
Microsoft recovery path versus the legacy utility
| Consideration | Windows WinRE and Bootrec | Legacy mbrfix.exe |
|---|---|---|
| Source and trust | Built into Windows recovery media and documented by Microsoft. | Third-party utility associated with Systemintegrasjon AS; each copy must be verified independently. |
| Firmware and disk model | Startup Repair and Bootrec are selected within the Windows recovery workflow, but /FIXMBR still targets MBR code. |
Designed for MBR-era systems; may not suit UEFI/GPT computers. |
| Offline use | Available from the installed WinRE or Windows installation/recovery media. | May require locating and launching a separate executable from trusted media. |
| What can change | /FIXMBR rewrites master boot code and does not repair every partition or BCD problem. |
Its documented fix operations can write boot-related data; an incorrect operation can increase recovery difficulty. |
| Malware handling | Can be combined with offline scanning before repair. | The executable itself must be scanned and authenticated; it is not a malware-removal product. |
| Rollback and backups | Use backups and preserve the BitLocker key; Startup Repair provides the supported first attempt. | Do not run without a current backup and a verified recovery path. |
Troubleshooting common outcomes
Startup Repair says it could not repair the PC
Record the displayed log location, then return to Command Prompt and confirm the disk style and firmware assumptions. If the installation is MBR-based, BOOTREC /FIXMBR is the Microsoft-documented next step for damaged master boot code. If the partition table, disk hardware, BCD or system files are damaged, that command alone will not be sufficient; use installation media and a backup-oriented recovery plan rather than repeatedly rewriting the boot sector.
The command succeeds but Windows still does not boot
A successful rewrite only shows that the command wrote master boot code. It does not repair a failing drive, an incorrect active partition, a damaged partition table, an incompatible firmware setting, encrypted-volume recovery state or malware that remains on the disk. Recheck the MBR/GPT and BIOS/UEFI configuration, run offline malware checks, and use the recovery environment’s other diagnostics or a professional data-recovery service when the data is important.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →BitLocker asks for a recovery key after repair
Enter the recovery key from your organization’s account, Microsoft account or saved backup. Microsoft notes that changing the MBR with anything other than Windows can alter the measured startup environment and trigger recovery or prevent booting. Do not keep rewriting boot code while locked out; first restore a known-good configuration and confirm the disk layout.
An antivirus product quarantines mbrfix.exe
Leave the file quarantined while you verify its path, signature, hash and acquisition source. If it was not expected, perform an offline scan and investigate scheduled tasks or startup entries that launched it. If it came from a trusted legacy recovery package, obtain a clean copy from that same controlled source rather than restoring the quarantined file blindly.
Quick Recap
Practical decision checklist
- Need to know what it is? Treat it as a legacy third-party MBR utility, not a Windows component.
- Need to judge safety? Verify source, path, signature and SHA-256 hash, then scan.
- PC will not boot? Back up accessible data, secure the BitLocker key, enter WinRE and run Startup Repair.
- Still failing on an MBR installation? Use the documented
BOOTREC /FIXMBRcommand from WinRE. - UEFI/GPT or possible infection? Do not apply an MBR-era executable first; identify the layout and scan offline.
- No longer needed? Remove the parent legacy application or the unneeded downloaded copy only after checking that no recovery process depends on it.
