Matter is an industry-wide smart-home connectivity standard, not a separate smart-home brand or app. It gives compatible accessories a common way to communicate across platforms, while Apple Home supplies the app, Siri controls, automations and Apple-device experience. An iPhone running iOS 16.1 or later can work with Matter accessories; iOS 18 or later can add and control them locally without a home hub, although Apple recommends a hub for the fullest Home experience.
Whether a particular device works well depends on its Matter category, the functions its manufacturer implemented, and whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread. Pairing normally means scanning a Matter QR code in the Home app, or entering a numeric code supplied by the device or another smart-home app.

Matter and Apple Home are different parts of the system
Matter defines a shared communication and security foundation for smart-home accessories. Apple Home is an ecosystem and user interface that can commission Matter devices, display them in rooms, and expose supported controls through the Home app, Siri, Control Center and compatible HomeKit apps.

The distinction matters when you shop. A Matter logo means an accessory follows the Matter standard, but it does not promise that every control the manufacturer advertises will appear in Apple Home. Apple supports particular Matter device categories, and each product exposes a defined set of functions. A light may provide on/off and brightness, for example, while a manufacturer-specific effect or diagnostic setting remains available only in the maker’s app.

What happens when Apple Home adds a Matter accessory?
The first pairing is called commissioning. During commissioning, Apple Home uses the accessory’s setup code to establish secure credentials, identify the device and provision it onto the appropriate local network. Depending on the product, that network is Wi-Fi or Thread.
Code-based identification
Every Matter accessory is expected to have a setup QR code and usually a numeric code. The code is not a product serial number; it is the bootstrap credential used to begin secure onboarding. Keep the code or the product’s printed instructions after setup because you may need it again following a factory reset.
Provisioning onto Wi-Fi or Thread
iOS supplies network credentials during setup. Wi-Fi Matter products join your wireless LAN. Thread products join a low-power mesh and need Thread routing infrastructure in the home. You do not manually choose between protocols in most normal setups; the accessory and Apple’s commissioning flow determine the appropriate path.
Clusters explain why controls differ
Matter describes device functionality in standardized groups called clusters. A product can implement some clusters and not others, and Apple Home presents the controls it supports for that implementation. Two Matter-certified products in the same broad category can therefore show different controls. Certification establishes interoperability for the tested functions; it is not a guarantee of identical feature sets across brands or apps.

How to add a Matter device to Apple Home
Have the accessory powered on, its setup code available, and the iPhone you will use connected to the home Wi-Fi network. If the manual requires a manufacturer app, firmware update or a separate bridge, complete those requirements first.
- Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Add Accessory (or the + button, then Add Accessory).
- Scan the Matter QR code when prompted. If scanning fails, choose the option to enter the numeric Matter code manually.
- Approve the permission request to add the accessory to your home.
- Follow the on-screen instructions while iOS commissions the accessory onto Wi-Fi or Thread.
- Assign a room and name, then finish. The device should appear as a tile in Home and become available to Siri where its category supports Siri control.
If the accessory does not appear as a normal nearby device, tap More Options in the add-accessory screen and select the Matter accessory path. Labels can vary slightly by iOS release, but the flow remains code-based.

Adding a device that is already in another smart-home app
Matter supports multi-admin sharing. A device can be commissioned into one ecosystem and then shared with another, subject to the accessory’s implementation. In the app where the accessory is already installed, look for an option such as Share, Add to another ecosystem or Generate pairing code. Then, in Apple Home, choose Add Accessory, open More Options, select the Matter device and enter the newly generated code.
Do not factory-reset a device merely to add Apple Home if the existing app offers a sharing code. Resetting can remove schedules, calibration and other configuration. The sharing flow is the safer way to keep the original pairing while adding another administrator.
Where Matter pairings are stored
Apple says Matter pairings synchronize across your Apple devices through iCloud Keychain. To review them, open Settings > General > Matter Accessories. If a device is missing on a second Apple device, check that both devices use the same Apple Account, iCloud Keychain is enabled and the operating systems meet the accessory’s requirements.

Do you need a home hub?
The answer depends on the task rather than on the word “Matter” alone. Apple’s current support guidance says an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories in Home without a home hub. Apple still recommends a hub for the best experience.

| Control a supported Matter device locally from an iOS 18-or-later iPhone | Not required by Apple’s stated local-control guidance | The iPhone and accessory must be reachable on the local network, and the product must be supported by Apple Home. |
| Control accessories when away from home | Home hub required | The hub maintains the home’s remote-access path while your iPhone is elsewhere. |
| Run Home automations | Home hub recommended and generally required for the automation service | Automations can run when your phone is not present. |
| Receive Home notifications based on accessory events | Home hub required for the broader Home experience | Examples include notifications tied to sensors or locks, subject to category and settings. |
| Use a Thread Matter accessory | Thread-enabled Home hub or compatible Thread border router needed | The router provides Thread network connectivity; it is different from a Wi-Fi access point. |
Apple’s guidance uses “home hub” in the context of remote control and automations, while its iOS 18 statement addresses local adding and control. Treat those as different levels of capability. A phone-only setup may be sufficient for testing a plug in the same room, but it is not equivalent to a hub-based home with remote access, automations and event notifications.
Thread routing hardware
Thread is an IP-based, low-power mesh network. It is not Wi-Fi, and a Thread Matter accessory cannot simply connect to a conventional Wi-Fi router. Apple’s setup instructions identify Thread-capable options such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini, along with compatible third-party Thread border routers. Exact support can depend on the model and Apple’s current compatibility qualifications, so verify the specific hub before buying a Thread product.
Wi-Fi Matter versus Thread Matter
| Characteristic | Wi-Fi Matter accessory | Thread Matter accessory |
|---|---|---|
| Network | Joins the existing Wi-Fi network | Joins a Thread mesh through a border router |
| Typical design goal | Uses the home’s regular IP network; suitable for devices with more available power | Low-power networking for devices such as sensors and other efficient accessories |
| Extra hardware | No Thread router, although a hub may still be needed for remote access and automations | Thread-enabled Home hub or compatible Thread border router, plus any hub needed for Home features |
| Common setup problem | Incompatible Wi-Fi band or isolated guest network | No compatible Thread routing service or an unsupported hub model |
Some products are available in both network types, but do not assume that a Matter label identifies the transport. Check the product listing and manual for “Wi-Fi Matter” or “Thread Matter,” then match the choice to your network and intended placement.
Which Matter categories does Apple Home support?
Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance names these Matter accessory categories as supported:

- 【Advanced Scheduling & Timer】Time your smart plugs to automatically turn on and off any home electronic appliances such as lamps, fans, humidifiers, Christmas lights, etc. Advance Scheduling your appliances with your daily routine.
| Category | Examples of what it may represent | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Air purifiers | Air-cleaning appliances | Apple Home shows the supported standardized controls, not necessarily every air-quality setting. |
| Blinds and shades | Motorized window coverings | Position and movement controls depend on the implementation. |
| Bridges | Products that connect another device family to Matter | The bridged devices may expose only the functions mapped into Matter. |
| Fans | Standalone or integrated fans | Speed and mode options vary. |
| Lights | Bulbs and fixtures | Color, effects and scenes are implementation-dependent. |
| Locks | Smart door locks | Security controls can require additional manufacturer setup or permissions. |
| Outlets | Smart plugs and smart outlets | Power monitoring or schedules may not be exposed in Apple Home. |
| Robot vacuum cleaners | Robotic floor cleaners | Maps and advanced cleaning routines may remain in the maker’s app. |
| Sensors | Air-quality, ambient-light, contact, humidity, motion and temperature sensors | Apple lists these sensor types; exact readings and thresholds depend on the product. |
| Switches | In-wall or wireless controls | Button actions can differ from the standardized on/off function. |
| Thermostats | Heating and cooling controllers | Supported modes and auxiliary equipment vary by model and region. |
For the Works with Apple Home badge, Apple says a vendor must complete CSA Matter certification and CSA Matter interoperability testing for an accessory in a category Apple Home supports. That testing is useful evidence of standards compliance, but the product’s listing and manual remain the authority for network type, required hardware and optional features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a Matter accessory for Apple Home
Use this checklist before purchasing, especially for a Matter smart plug or other outlet:
- Confirm the category: Make sure Apple Home supports the product category, such as outlets, lights, switches or sensors.
- Verify the network: Identify whether the model uses Wi-Fi or Thread. For Thread, confirm that you have a compatible border router or Thread-enabled Home hub.
- Check the exact Apple Home claim: Look for explicit Apple Home, HomeKit or Works with Apple Home support rather than relying on a generic “smart home” description.
- Read the feature list: Compare the controls you need—dimming, color, energy readings, lock states, fan speed or sensor measurements—with what Apple Home actually supports for that model.
- Check setup dependencies: Some products require a manufacturer app for account creation, firmware updates, calibration or initial configuration.
- Look for multi-admin support: If you also use another ecosystem, confirm that the product can generate a Matter sharing code and retain both pairings.
- Check regional and electrical requirements: For outlets, switches and thermostats, verify voltage, plug format and installation requirements for your country.
A Matter-certified outlet is therefore a sensible category-level choice for Apple Home, but a specific model should not be treated as verified until its certification, Apple Home support, network type and hub requirements have been checked.
Troubleshooting Matter setup in Apple Home
“Accessory not found” or the QR code will not scan
- Move the iPhone close to the powered accessory and improve the room lighting for scanning.
- Enter the numeric Matter code manually if the camera cannot read the QR code.
- Confirm the accessory is in pairing mode. A device already commissioned elsewhere may require a sharing code from its existing app.
- Check the manual for a required bridge, manufacturer app or firmware update.
Apple reports an incompatible network
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking 2.4 GHz support because some accessories do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Connect the iPhone and accessory to the same home network, avoid guest-network isolation during setup, and verify that the router is not blocking local-device discovery. If the product supports only 2.4 GHz, ensure that band is enabled even when your router combines both bands under one network name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe accessory pairs but becomes unavailable
- Check that the iPhone, existing accessories and any Home hubs use the same home network.
- Install the latest accessory firmware through the manufacturer’s app when Apple Home reports that the device is unsupported or unstable.
- For Thread products, confirm that a supported Thread border router is online and that the exact hub model is eligible for the accessory.
- Restart the accessory and network equipment only after recording any settings you may need to restore.
Some advertised controls are missing
First determine whether the missing control is part of a standardized Matter cluster that the product implements. Apple Home may support the category while omitting a proprietary feature, advanced scene editor or diagnostic panel. Use the manufacturer’s app for functions that are not exposed through Apple Home, and check for firmware updates that add officially supported capabilities.

Local control, privacy and account boundaries
Matter is designed for local-network interoperability, but local control does not mean every operation is independent of accounts or cloud services. A manufacturer may still require an account for firmware delivery, remote diagnostics or optional features. Apple Home’s remote access and automations also depend on the home’s hub arrangement.
When you share a Matter device with another ecosystem, each ecosystem receives an authorized administrator relationship rather than unrestricted access to your Apple Account. Review sharing permissions in the accessory’s existing app and remove an ecosystem’s pairing when you no longer want it to control the device.
What Matter changes for Apple Home users
Matter reduces the risk that a device works only with one platform, but it does not eliminate compatibility checks. The practical workflow is straightforward: identify the supported Apple Home category, determine whether the accessory is Wi-Fi or Thread, provide the setup code, and decide whether you need only local control or also remote access, automations and notifications.

For a simple local accessory, iOS 18 or later may be enough. For a dependable whole-home installation—especially one using Thread, sensors, locks or automations—plan around a compatible Home hub or Thread border router and keep the accessory firmware current. That approach matches what Matter actually provides: a common foundation, with the final controls and experience determined by Apple Home, the accessory category and the product’s implementation.
