What Is Marine Snow, and How Does It Move Carbon Through the Ocean?

Marine snow is a continuous shower of biological debris and other particles sinking through the ocean. Phytoplankton and microbes produced near the sunlit surface become joined by fecal material, dead organisms, sediments and other particles. As these aggregates descend, deep-sea animals eat them and microbes break them apart. The portion that remains in sinking particles exports some surface-produced organic carbon into the ocean interior, a process known as the gravitational part of the biological carbon pump.

That export is not the same as permanent storage. Feeding and microbial decomposition remove much of the carbon during the descent, while the carbon that is respired at depth can stay away from the atmosphere longer than carbon recycled near the surface. The length of that isolation depends on respiration depth and later ocean circulation.

What is marine snow?

Marine snow is the name oceanographers give to visible flakes, clumps and particles suspended in seawater and drifting downward. NOAA Ocean Exploration describes it as mostly biological debris that starts in the ocean’s upper layers and drifts toward the seafloor, where it supplies a primary energy source for deep-ocean animals. It is not frozen water and it does not fall uniformly like winter snow. It is a particle pathway through the water column.

The particles can include:

  • Phytoplankton and the organic matter they produce through photosynthesis.
  • Microbes living in surface waters or colonizing sinking particles.
  • Fecal material from zooplankton and other animals.
  • Dead and decaying organisms.
  • Suspended sediment, including silt, mixed into the aggregates.
  • Other organic and inorganic particles encountered during the descent.

Individual pieces can grow as they collide and stick together. NOAA reports flakes reaching several centimeters across. Their appearance and abundance change with the surrounding ecosystem, currents and depth, so a “snowfall” seen by an underwater camera is a local snapshot rather than a fixed global layer.

How does marine snow form near the surface?

Photosynthesis supplies the starting material

In the sunlit upper ocean, phytoplankton use photosynthesis to convert dissolved inorganic carbon into organic matter. That newly produced material supports food webs. Some is eaten immediately; some remains as cells, fragments or dissolved compounds that microbes use. When cells die, clump or are packaged into fecal pellets, the material becomes part of the pool of particles that can sink.

Particles aggregate and collect passengers

Small pieces meet as water moves. Aggregates can incorporate microbial material, fecal particles, dead animals, decaying tissue and suspended silt. The resulting flakes are larger than their original components and can continue collecting material while they sink. This growth changes both their food value and their sinking behavior.

Currents set the route

A particle does not necessarily travel straight down. Currents can move marine snow sideways, spread it over different parts of the seafloor or carry it into regions with different temperatures, oxygen levels and animal communities. NOAA identifies surface production, consumption and decomposition during descent, and current movement as major controls on how much marine snow is present at a given depth.

  1. Formation: Organic matter made in surface waters joins with other particles to form a flake or pellet-rich aggregate.
  2. Initial descent: Gravity pulls the aggregate below the surface. Some flakes are small and fragile; others grow to centimeter scale as they collect additional material.
  3. Feeding: Zooplankton and other animals intercept the particle, consume parts of it or repackage what they eat into new fecal material. Feeding diverts carbon from the original sinking form and can create particles with different sinking properties.
  4. Microbial processing: Microbes colonize the aggregate and degrade its organic compounds. This releases dissolved nutrients and converts some organic carbon back to inorganic forms through respiration.
  5. Fragmentation and continued aggregation: Grazing, turbulence and decomposition can break a flake apart, while collisions with other particles can make a new, larger aggregate. The net effect varies with depth and local conditions.
  6. Deep-water arrival or deposition: A fraction reaches deep water or the seabed. Material deposited in sediments can be buried or can undergo further decomposition; material that remains suspended continues to be transformed by microbes and animals.

Some flakes take weeks to reach the ocean floor, according to the NOAA National Ocean Service. That is a description of transit for some particles, not a universal sinking speed. A particular aggregate may be consumed, disintegrate or be carried laterally before it completes that journey.

How does marine snow move carbon through the ocean?

Surface carbon enters particles

Photosynthesis removes dissolved inorganic carbon from surface seawater and stores it temporarily in organic matter. When that matter becomes part of a sinking aggregate, carbon leaves the surface layer in particulate form. This is the gravitational particle pathway of the biological carbon pump.

The sinking flux is progressively reduced

The amount of carbon moving downward is not equal to the amount initially produced. Animals feed on particles, microbes decompose them and currents redistribute them. Each process can reduce the particulate flux at depth or transfer carbon into another form. Nutrients released by decomposition can be reused by organisms, especially when they return to sunlit waters.

Respiration depth affects storage

When microbes or animals respire organic carbon, the resulting inorganic carbon is released at the depth where respiration occurs. Carbon respired near the surface can come back into contact with the atmosphere relatively quickly. Carbon respired much deeper must be returned by circulation before that exchange can happen, so it can remain isolated for longer.

A 2023 review of the ocean’s biological pump reports sequestration timescales ranging from months to millennia, depending largely on respiration depth and circulation. This range describes how long carbon can remain out of atmospheric contact; it does not mean an individual flake takes months or millennia to sink.

Is marine snow the whole biological carbon pump?

No. Marine snow is one important route, but the biological carbon pump also includes carbon carried below the surface by migrating animals and by physical mixing. These pathways operate at the same time and can interact.

Export route How carbon moves Main controls What determines isolation time
Gravitational particle sinking Aggregates, fecal material and other particles descend through the water column. Surface production, aggregation, grazing, microbial decomposition and currents. Depth at which carbon is respired or deposited, followed by ocean circulation.
Animal migration Animals feed near the surface and transport carbon to deeper water when they migrate and respire or excrete there. Migration behavior, feeding patterns and the depth of respiration or excretion. Where the transported carbon is released and how quickly circulation returns it toward the surface.
Physical mixing Water movement carries dissolved and particulate carbon below the surface. Mixing intensity, water-mass formation and regional circulation. The depth and pathway of the water mass that contains the carbon.

The relative importance of these routes varies by ecosystem and location. A carbon budget that counts only visible flakes would omit animal and physical transport, while a biological-pump estimate should not be labeled “marine snow” unless the measurement isolates the particle pathway.

Why is marine snow abundant at some depths and scarce at others?

Particle concentration reflects a balance between supply and removal. A productive surface ecosystem can create more starting material, but a high production rate does not guarantee a large flux at depth. Grazers may consume particles rapidly, and microbes may decompose them before they travel far. Conversely, efficient aggregation or a current that concentrates particles can increase the amount observed locally.

Depth therefore matters twice: it is the distance particles must travel, and it is an environment in which temperature, pressure, oxygen and the resident community change. These conditions affect decomposition and feeding. Currents can also move particles into or out of the area being sampled, so a vertical profile is not simply a record of the surface production directly above it.

Why does marine snow matter to deep-sea life?

Sunlight does not reach most of the deep ocean, so local photosynthesis cannot supply its animals with food. Marine snow delivers energy-rich organic material from above. Animals may eat intact aggregates, capture fragments or consume organisms that have gathered around them. NOAA calls this material a primary energy source for deep-ocean animals.

Marine snow also helps recycle nutrients. Microbial and animal processing converts organic compounds into dissolved forms that can be used again by other organisms. Some recycled nutrients remain at depth; others can eventually be carried into surface waters, where they support new production. The same transformations that feed deep communities also reduce the amount of particulate carbon continuing downward.

How much carbon does the biological pump export?

A NOAA repository-hosted research report gives an estimated biological carbon pump export of approximately 5–15 gigatons of carbon per year into the deep ocean. That figure applies to the broader biological pump, not to marine snow alone. It includes the difficulty of separating gravitational particle sinking from animal migration and physical transport at global scale.

No robust standalone global marine-snow flux figure is established here. Local measurements can differ substantially because production, grazing, decomposition, aggregation and currents differ among regions and seasons. Treating the 5–15 Gt C per year estimate as the mass carried only by flakes would overstate what the evidence supports.

How do scientists measure marine snow?

One established method is a sediment trap. NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory describes sediment traps as instruments that intercept sinking particles so researchers can analyze their composition and flux. A trap can reveal how much material passes a depth, what kinds of particles it contains and how the signal changes over time.

Interpretation requires care. A trap records particles reaching its collection depth, not every particle produced above it. Swirling currents can move material into or away from the opening; swimmers can enter and alter the sample; and decomposition continues while particles descend. For those reasons, sediment-trap results are combined with observations of surface production, microbial activity, zooplankton and currents rather than treated as a complete inventory by themselves.

Common misconceptions about marine snow

  • “It is frozen precipitation.” Marine snow is made of suspended biological and mineral particles in liquid seawater.
  • “Everything produced at the surface reaches the seabed.” Feeding, microbial degradation and fragmentation remove or transform much of the material during descent.
  • “Weeks to the seafloor means weeks of carbon storage.” Transit time and sequestration time are different. Storage can last from months to millennia depending on respiration depth and circulation.
  • “Marine snow is the entire biological carbon pump.” Animal migration and physical mixing also move carbon below the surface.
  • “A global pump estimate is a marine-snow measurement.” The approximately 5–15 Gt C per year estimate covers the broader pump and should not be assigned solely to sinking aggregates.

What determines whether sinking carbon stays out of the atmosphere?

The key question is where and when the carbon is converted back to inorganic form, not simply whether a flake is visible. If respiration occurs in shallow water, circulation can return that carbon toward the atmosphere relatively soon. If respiration occurs in deep water or if carbon is deposited in sediments, the return pathway is longer and may involve slower circulation. Because ocean currents differ, the same type of particle can have different storage outcomes in different regions.

Marine snow is therefore best understood as a moving, changing conveyor of carbon and nutrients. It starts with surface production, gathers material as it sinks, feeds organisms and is continually reworked. The fraction that survives to depth contributes to long-lived ocean carbon storage, but the amount and duration depend on the entire chain of biological processing and circulation.
