What Is localization.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix localization.exe Errors on Windows

localization.exe is not a standard Windows service or a built-in Windows component. It is documented as a localization compiler shipped with the PC version of Darkest Dungeon. The utility converts the game’s XML string tables into compiled .loc or .loc2 files so edited text can appear in the game.

A copy is plausibly legitimate when it is inside an authentic Darkest Dungeon installation, normally alongside the game’s other files in the DarkestDungeon_windows folder. The filename alone does not prove that it is safe. A copy in Downloads, a temporary directory, System32, or an unrelated application folder should be treated as suspicious until its source is verified and it has been scanned.

What localization.exe does

Darkest Dungeon stores much of its displayed text in XML string-table files. The game’s localization workflow uses localization.exe to compile those XML files into the binary localization files that the game reads. The official modding instructions describe compiling string_table.xml files in the game’s localization directory. Documentation for the Darkest Dungeon Modding Tool describes the same process as converting XML string tables into .loc2 files.

This makes the executable a game-development and modding utility, not a Windows process that every computer should have. If Darkest Dungeon has never been installed on a computer, there is no normal Windows reason for localization.exe to be present.

#1 Best Overall
Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game – Board Game by Mythic Games 1-4 Players – 90-120 Minutes of Gameplay – Games for Game Night – Teens and Adults Ages 14+ - English Version
  • Join the Adventure: Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game is a cooperative dungeon crawler for 1-4 players, where you complete missions and restore the Heir's mansion.
  • Face the Darkness: Battle evil forces and overcome challenges as you explore the treacherous Darkest Dungeon.
  • Game Components (2 boxes in 1 game!): The Core Game includes all cardboard/paper pieces, while the Strongbox contains detailed miniatures.
  • Popular Origin: Based on the critically acclaimed video game by Red Hook Studios, which has sold over 8 million copies.
  • Tabletop Transition: Experience the dark and immersive world of Darkest Dungeon now in a board game format.

What happens during compilation

  1. You edit or create the appropriate XML string-table file in the game’s localization directory.
  2. The compiler reads the XML using the supporting files and directory layout supplied with the game.
  3. It writes the compiled localization output, such as a .loc or .loc2 file.
  4. Darkest Dungeon loads that compiled file when it starts, allowing the edited strings to appear.

Editing an XML file by itself does not update the game’s compiled localization data. The compiler must be run, and it must be run with the expected input files and companion game files.

Is localization.exe safe?

Safety depends on provenance, location, and behavior rather than on the filename. A legitimate copy should have come from a trusted Darkest Dungeon installation and should be near the game’s other files. A malicious program can use the same filename, so seeing localization.exe in Task Manager or File Explorer is not proof of authenticity.

Signs that fit a legitimate copy

  • Darkest Dungeon is installed through a trusted game platform or the original installer.
  • The file is under the game’s installation directory, normally in or near DarkestDungeon_windows.
  • The directory contains the expected game files and supporting libraries rather than only a lone executable.
  • The file appears after the game is installed or after the platform restores its files, not after an unexplained download.
  • Windows Security does not identify it as unwanted or malicious, and the file’s Properties show consistent publisher or signature information when a signature is present.

Signs that require caution

  • The file is in Downloads, a browser cache, a user-writable temporary folder, System32, or an unrelated program directory.
  • There is no Darkest Dungeon installation on the computer.
  • The executable arrived as a standalone download or in an unsolicited archive.
  • It runs at startup, creates unrelated files, changes browser or security settings, or causes other suspicious behavior.
  • Windows Security repeatedly detects it, or the file returns after being removed.

An unexpected location does not automatically prove malware, but it removes the most important evidence of legitimacy. Do not launch an unexplained copy merely to see what it does.

How to verify the file

  1. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and note its full location, size, creation date, and any Digital Signatures tab. A missing signature is not conclusive, but a signature that does not match the software source is a warning.
  2. Compare the path with the Darkest Dungeon installation managed by your game platform. Do not compare only the filename; check the surrounding files and folders.
  3. Use the platform’s file-verification or repair function to obtain a known copy. A file restored by the platform is more trustworthy than one downloaded from an executable archive site.
  4. Run a Microsoft Defender scan before allowing an unexpected copy to run. Keep Defender security intelligence current so the scan uses current detections.

Microsoft describes malware as software that can steal data or identity or use a device for attacks. If you suspect unwanted software, Microsoft recommends keeping Defender current and running a full scan. If the problem persists, Defender Offline or Microsoft Safety Scanner can provide a deeper check.

  • Designed for cooperative play, this expansion heightens tension and adds new layers of danger to your dungeon crawl.

Where should localization.exe be located?

The documented example places the executable in a path ending in DarkestDungeon_windowslocalization.exe. One example uses a Steam library path such as G:SteamLibrarysteamappscommonDarkestDungeon_windowslocalization.exe. Your drive letter and library location may differ, but the important part is that the executable belongs to the game’s installation and is used with the files in that same _windows directory.

The compiler is not expected to be in C:WindowsSystem32, in a generic Windows program folder, or in a temporary extraction directory. If you copied the game manually, preserve the original directory structure; moving only the executable can leave it without the libraries and localization folders it needs.

Companion files matter

Darkest Dungeon modding documentation lists files including fmod.dll, fmodstudio.dll, glew32.dll, SDL2.dll, and steam_api.dll among the files used with the compiler. The exact contents can vary by game edition, but these references illustrate why a standalone replacement executable is risky. A missing library, a DLL from another edition, or a compiler launched from the wrong working directory can produce a crash or no output even when the executable itself is genuine.

What common localization.exe errors mean

Message or symptom Likely explanation First action
localization.exe not found or a missing-file prompt The installation is incomplete, the file was quarantined, or a shortcut points to the wrong directory. Check the path, then verify or reinstall the game from its trusted platform.
localization.exe has stopped working A damaged executable, mismatched DLLs, wrong game edition, invalid input, or an incorrect working directory. Restore matching game files and run the compiler from the game’s _windows context.
No .loc or .loc2 output The XML string table is missing, misnamed, in the wrong folder, malformed, or the compiler was started outside the expected directory. Confirm the localization folder and XML naming, then run the compiler with the original directory layout.
Invalid Win32 application or immediate launch failure The executable may be corrupt, built for a different architecture, paired with incompatible files, or malicious. Do not download a replacement at random; restore the platform copy and scan the system.
Windows Security repeatedly detects the file The file may be unwanted or malicious, or a legitimate file may have been altered. Quarantine it, update Defender, and use a full scan followed by Offline or Safety Scanner checks if detection persists.

How to fix localization.exe errors manually

1. Stop and identify the copy that is failing

Write down the complete path shown in the error, shortcut, Task Manager, or Event Viewer. If more than one copy exists, do not assume they are interchangeable. The copy under the Darkest Dungeon installation and a copy in Downloads may have completely different origins.

  • Keeps cards, tokens, and accessories neatly organized while reducing table clutter, helping streamline gameplay and making storage and transport more convenient between gaming sessions

If the file is running from an unexpected location, close the process and avoid launching it again until it has been scanned. Preserve the path and filename so you can determine whether another program placed it there.

2. Check whether Darkest Dungeon is actually installed

Open the game platform’s library and locate Darkest Dungeon. Browse to its installation folder and look for the DarkestDungeon_windows directory and the expected game files. If the game is not installed, an unexplained localization.exe should be handled as an untrusted executable rather than as a missing Windows component.

3. Verify or repair the game files

For a Steam installation, open the game’s Library entry, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Other platforms provide a similarly named Verify, Repair, or Scan-and-repair command. Let the process finish, then start the game once and check whether the compiler and its supporting files have been restored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verification is preferable to downloading an individual EXE because it restores the set of files intended for that game edition. If verification reports files that cannot be restored, uninstall the game, remove only the remaining game folder if the platform instructs you to do so, and reinstall from the original trusted source.

4. Keep the executable and DLLs from the same installation

Do not mix localization.exe or DLLs copied from different computers, game editions, mods, or old backups. Keep the executable with the libraries supplied in its own _windows directory, including any required files such as fmod.dll, fmodstudio.dll, glew32.dll, SDL2.dll, and steam_api.dll.

If you manually moved the compiler, move the complete game directory back or restore it through the platform. Launching it while the current working directory is another folder can also prevent it from finding the localization directory or its libraries.

5. Confirm the localization input files

The compiler expects the game’s localization directory and XML string-table files. Confirm that the files you edited are in the intended directory and retain the expected string-table naming, such as string_table.xml. Check that the XML is saved as plain XML and that you did not accidentally change the extension or place it in a similarly named backup folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the compiler from the game’s DarkestDungeon_windows context, using the original folder layout. After it finishes, look for the generated .loc or .loc2 output where the game expects it. If no output appears, return to the input path and naming checks before replacing files.

6. Scan with Microsoft Defender

  1. Open Windows Security and go to Virus & threat protection.
  2. Use Protection updates to check for current security intelligence.
  3. Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and allow it to complete. A full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan.
  4. Review detected items and follow Windows Security’s quarantine or removal recommendation. Do not create an exclusion merely to force an unexplained executable to run.

When the file reappears, Defender cannot remove it, or other suspicious activity continues, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Offline scanning restarts Windows and checks before the normal operating environment loads, which can help with software that resists removal. Microsoft Safety Scanner is another on-demand option for checking suspected malware. Microsoft describes the Malicious Software Removal Tool as a monthly cleaner for specific prevalent threats, not a replacement for comprehensive Defender or Safety Scanner checks.

7. Restore a quarantined game file safely

If Defender quarantined a copy that is inside the verified Darkest Dungeon installation, first confirm that the detection is not associated with a modified or unofficial file. Do not restore it simply because the game stops working. Verify the installation through the platform and let the platform provide a clean replacement. If the detection remains, treat the file as unsafe and contact the game publisher or platform support through an official channel.

8. Reinstall when the installation is inconsistent

Reinstalling is appropriate when verification cannot repair the file set, the executable and DLLs come from different editions, or the installation was copied incompletely. Back up only your legitimate saves or configuration files as appropriate for the game, remove the damaged installation, and reinstall from the trusted platform. Do not preserve an unknown executable and copy it back into the new directory.

9. Avoid unsafe repair methods

  • Do not download localization.exe from a random DLL or EXE website.
  • Do not disable antivirus protection just to launch a file that triggered a warning.
  • Do not replace one DLL with a similarly named DLL from another game or Windows installation.
  • Do not run commands supplied by an unsolicited pop-up or remote caller.
  • Do not call a phone number displayed in an error window. Microsoft states that genuine Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.
  • Download software only from the official vendor, the trusted game platform, or the Microsoft Store when applicable.

Can you delete localization.exe?

If it is the legitimate compiler in a Darkest Dungeon installation, deleting it may prevent localization work or mod tools from functioning. The game itself may not need the compiler during ordinary play, but deleting a managed game file is unnecessary; use the platform’s verification feature if it is damaged or missing.

If the copy is outside the game directory and has no trustworthy provenance, scan it first and follow Windows Security’s quarantine or removal instructions. After removal, check startup entries, scheduled tasks, and recently installed software if the file returns. A file that keeps reappearing needs a broader malware investigation rather than repeated manual deletion.

A practical decision path

  1. Inside a verified Darkest Dungeon folder: keep the file with its companion files, verify the installation, and correct the localization XML or working directory if compilation fails.
  2. Inside the game folder but damaged or missing: use the platform’s Verify or Repair command, then reinstall if verification cannot restore a consistent set.
  3. Outside the game folder with no clear source: do not run it; scan with updated Defender and escalate to Offline scan or Microsoft Safety Scanner if needed.
  4. Persistent crashes after a clean restore: check for mismatched DLLs, a different game edition, an incorrect folder context, or malformed XML input before attempting another replacement.

The filename is only an identifier. The combination of trusted game provenance, the expected _windows directory, matching dependencies, valid localization input, and a clean security scan is what supports a safety judgment.

If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check for missing updates and potentially unwanted applications, and provide tools such as a real-time boost and crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
