Inventory records identify “LiveRegister” as a Micro-Star Int’l Co., Ltd. file and show it in MSI Live Update REGISTER folders. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is legitimate. Check the complete path, digital signature, Windows Security history, and the MSI software installed on your PC before deciding whether to keep, repair, quarantine, or remove it.
What liveregister.exe does
MSI Live Update is an MSI utility that checks and manages updates for supported MSI hardware and software. liveregister.exe appears to be one of its registration components rather than a general Windows system file. A ProcessChecker inventory identifies the product as “LiveRegister,” lists Micro-Star Int’l Co., Ltd. as the developer, and records these observed versions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
1.0.0.031.0.0.04
The same inventory records a path such as C:MSILiveUpdateREGISTERLiveRegister.exe. An MSI Live Update 6 inventory places another copy at C:Program Files (x86)MSILive UpdateLiveUpdateREGISTERLiveRegister.exe. The second location is under the 32-bit Program Files folder, which is normal for many older utilities running on 64-bit Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

They help you compare the copy on your computer with a known installation layout, but they cannot authenticate a file by themselves.

Is liveregister.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer for every file with this name. A copy inside an MSI Live Update directory, carrying a valid MSI publisher signature, and absent from Windows Security detections is more consistent with the reported component. A copy in a temporary folder, a user-profile folder, a random download directory, or another unrelated location deserves investigation. A missing, invalid, or mismatched signature, or a Defender alert for the exact file, increases the concern.
This is a copy-specific verification rule, not a claim that every liveregister.exe is malware or that every file outside the two observed paths is malicious. Malware can use a familiar filename, and legitimate software can be installed in a custom directory. Use several checks together rather than relying on the name or path alone.
Check the copy on your PC before changing anything
1. Find the running file’s full path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes or Details tab, look for
liveregister.exe. If it is not running, continue with File Explorer searches for the filename. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- Copy the complete path somewhere safe. Compare it with
C:MSILiveUpdateREGISTERLiveRegister.exeandC:Program Files (x86)MSILive UpdateLiveUpdateREGISTERLiveRegister.exe.
Do not delete the file while you are still collecting this information. The path is needed if Windows Security reports a detection or if you need to tell MSI support exactly which copy is failing.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match2. Check the publisher and signature
- In File Explorer, right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if it is present.
- Select the signer and choose Details. Windows should report whether the digital signature is valid and whether the signing certificate chains correctly.
- Read the signer name rather than assuming that a file in an MSI-looking folder is genuine. A missing signature, an invalid signature, or a signer that does not match MSI is a reason to pause and scan.
A valid signature supports authenticity, but it does not by itself prove that the program is needed or harmless in every context. Combine the result with the path, installation history, and security scan.
3. Review Windows Security history
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Protection history.
- Open any event that names
liveregister.exeand note the exact path, detection name, and action taken.
If the event concerns a different copy than the one you inspected, treat the paths separately. Microsoft says a suspicious file can be submitted to it for analysis; use that route when the detection is unclear and you can safely preserve the file for investigation.

Why liveregister.exe errors occur
The same filename can produce different messages for different reasons. The wording and the path shown in the error determine which fix is appropriate.
Missing or damaged MSI component
An error such as “liveregister.exe not found” can appear after an incomplete update, disk cleanup, failed uninstall, or accidental deletion. If MSI Live Update is still listed in installed apps and you intentionally use it, the parent utility may need a repair or reinstall rather than a replacement file downloaded from a random website.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Security software blocked the file
Defender or another security product may quarantine a file that it considers unsafe. In that case, the Windows Security event is more important than the pop-up wording. Do not restore or allow the file until you have checked its path, signature, and MSI installation source.
Wrong or suspicious location
A malicious program can copy a familiar name into a temporary or profile directory. Conversely, an administrator may have installed MSI Live Update somewhere other than the default folder. Location is a comparison point, not a verdict; use it with the signature and scan result.
Unwanted or obsolete MSI software
If you no longer own the MSI hardware that required Live Update, the utility may simply be obsolete. Removing an isolated executable can leave broken uninstall records or scheduled tasks. Uninstall the parent MSI Live Update product instead.

File association or startup confusion
A message that appears at sign-in may come from a startup entry that points to a deleted or moved installation. Record the exact command or path shown by the error before disabling anything. Removing a startup entry without understanding its parent application can hide the symptom while leaving the damaged installation behind.
How to fix liveregister.exe errors safely
Step 1: Record the error and installation context
- Write down the complete message, including any error code.
- Record whether it appears at startup, when MSI Live Update opens, during shutdown, or while another MSI utility is updating.
- Save the file path, Windows edition and version, and whether MSI Live Update appears under Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows).
- Note whether Windows Security has already quarantined the file.
This information prevents you from applying a reinstall to a file that should instead be quarantined, or deleting a component that belongs to software you still need.
Step 2: Update Defender and run a full scan
- Open Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, then select Protection updates and choose Check for updates.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and select Scan now.
Microsoft recommends a full scan when malware is suspected. A quick scan checks common hiding locations, while a full scan examines files and running programs across the drives Windows can access. Let the scan finish before deciding that the error is only a broken MSI installation.
Step 3: Handle a detection correctly
Open the detection in Protection history and inspect the path. Microsoft describes the available actions this way:
- Quarantine: moves the file to a safer location and blocks it from running or affecting the PC.
- Remove: deletes the detected file.
- Allow on device: restores or permits the item and should be used only when you trust the software and publisher.
For a copy in an unexpected directory, or one with an invalid or missing MSI signature, quarantine is the safer initial choice while you investigate. Do not create an exclusion merely to stop a recurring alert; an exclusion can prevent future scans of that location.

Step 4: Use Defender Offline for persistent concerns
If the file returns after removal, cannot be removed while Windows is running, or is associated with other suspicious behavior, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can prevent a persistent process from defending itself.
Microsoft also documents the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) for removing certain prevalent malware families. MSRT is not a replacement for an up-to-date antivirus product; use it as an additional Microsoft diagnostic and removal option when the situation warrants it.
Step 5: Repair an intentional MSI Live Update installation
Only take this path after the scan is clean or any confirmed threat has been handled. If MSI Live Update is installed, you need it, and the file is missing or damaged, obtain the current installer from MSI’s official support channel for your exact hardware and Windows version. Do not download a standalone liveregister.exe from an executable-file mirror.
- Close MSI utilities and save your work.
- Download the installer from MSI’s support site, selecting the model and operating-system edition that match your computer.
- Run the installer with an administrator account and follow its repair or reinstall choices.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Check whether the expected
REGISTERfolder and executable are restored, then run Windows Security again if the warning returns.
The available file records do not identify a separate, liveregister.exe-specific repair package. Reinstalling the parent MSI utility is therefore the appropriate repair method when the component is legitimate but incomplete.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Step 6: Uninstall MSI Live Update if you do not want it
Use the parent product’s uninstaller rather than deleting the executable in isolation.
Best Value
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features).
- Search for MSI Live Update or the MSI Live Update 6 entry.
- Select the entry, choose Uninstall, and complete the wizard.
An MSI Live Update 6 inventory records the full uninstaller command as C:Program Files (x86)MSILive Updateunins000.exe. Use that executable only when it belongs to the installation you verified and Windows’ normal app list does not offer a working uninstall option. Restart afterward and check for leftover startup entries or folders. Do not remove unrelated MSI drivers or control utilities simply because they share the MSI name.
Step 7: Recheck startup behavior and system logs
If the error appears every time you sign in after repair or uninstall:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select Startup apps.
- Look for an MSI Live Update entry. Disable it only after you have confirmed that the parent program is no longer needed or has been uninstalled.
- Open Event Viewer, choose Windows Logs > Application, and review entries at the time of the failure. Note the faulting application, module, and path; these details can distinguish a missing file from a broader Windows or MSI update problem.
Do not use a registry-cleaner utility to erase references based solely on the filename. Keep a backup of any configuration you change, and remove a startup reference through the owning application’s uninstall process whenever possible.
Legitimate and suspicious copies: a practical comparison
| Check | More consistent with an MSI component | Needs investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Location | C:MSILiveUpdateREGISTERLiveRegister.exe or C:Program Files (x86)MSILive UpdateLiveUpdateREGISTERLiveRegister.exe |
Temporary, user-profile, download, or unrelated directory |
| Publisher | Valid digital signature identifying MSI or Micro-Star Int’l Co., Ltd. | Missing, invalid, expired, or mismatched signer |
| Security history | No detection for the exact path after updated scans | Defender or another scanner identifies the file |
| Parent software | MSI Live Update was intentionally installed and is still needed | The utility is unknown, obsolete, or no longer required |
| Best next action | Repair or reinstall the verified MSI utility if the file is damaged | Quarantine or remove a confirmed threat, then investigate the parent installation |
No authoritative statistic establishes how common liveregister.exe is, how often it fails, or what percentage of copies are malicious. Treat claims that assign a precise infection rate or universal safety rating with skepticism.
What not to do
- Do not download a replacement executable from a random DLL or EXE library.
- Do not assume that the filename proves MSI ownership.
- Do not restore a quarantined copy before checking its path, signature, and detection details.
- Do not delete the file alone when MSI Live Update is installed; uninstall or repair the parent product.
- Do not call a phone number displayed in an error pop-up. Microsoft states that its error and warning messages never include phone numbers.
- Do not install software offered by a pop-up claiming that your PC is infected. Microsoft recommends downloading software from official vendor sites or the Microsoft Store.
When to seek further help
Contact MSI support with the exact model, Windows version, error text, full file path, signature result, and Windows Security detection name when the official installer fails or the component is required for a supported MSI utility. If scans continue to find the file in changing directories, other accounts show unusual activity, or you cannot keep Defender enabled, disconnect the PC from sensitive networks while you investigate and use a separate, trusted device to obtain assistance. Preserve the detection details instead of repeatedly deleting files, because the path and timestamp can reveal the process that recreates them.
Bottom line
liveregister.exe is commonly tied to MSI Live Update’s registration component, but the name is not proof of safety. Verify the complete path and digital signature, inspect Windows Security history, run an updated full scan, and use Defender Offline or MSRT when concerns persist. If the file is legitimate but damaged, reinstall MSI Live Update from MSI’s official support channel; if the utility is unwanted, uninstall the parent product rather than deleting one executable.
