A file with the same name has also been quarantined as Spyware.CryptBot.Themida. The name alone cannot prove that a copy is safe. Check its complete path, digital signature, origin and Microsoft Defender results before running, deleting or replacing it.
What linter.exe actually is
Windows identifies executable programs by their files, but filenames are not globally unique. Any application can ship a file called linter.exe; Windows does not reserve that basename for one Microsoft component. “Linter” is also a software role: a linter analyzes code or other resources and reports violations, warnings or recommendations. Microsoft documentation describes that role as normal software behavior, and proposed fixes do not change resources until a user accepts them.

One legitimate example is t-linter, a Python-based development tool. Its Windows executable may be installed at:

The exact username, Python version and installation location vary. A VS Code extension can call that executable through its t-linter.serverPath setting. Other language, Kubernetes or project-specific linters can use different filenames and folders.
The same basename is not proof of legitimacy. A ForoSpyware incident report records a file at C:USERSYUYUBAPPDATAROAMINGVPNPRLINTER.EXE that was quarantined as Spyware.CryptBot.Themida. That report demonstrates that a malicious program can use this name; it does not mean every linter.exe is malware.
Is linter.exe safe?
Safety depends on the particular file. Treat these as stronger evidence than the basename:
- Full path: a location that matches software you intentionally installed is more credible than a newly created, random folder under
AppDataRoamingor a temporary directory. - Publisher signature: in File Explorer, open the file’s Properties and inspect Digital Signatures. The signer should match the developer or product you recognize. An unsigned file is not automatically malicious, but it requires more caution.
- Origin: know whether it came from your Python environment, a VS Code extension or another official project release. A download from a file-sharing site is not a safe substitute for the original package.
- Security results: current Microsoft Defender detections and a clean follow-up scan provide more useful evidence than a filename search.
- Behavior: unexplained persistence at startup, credential-related alerts, network activity or sustained resource use raises the risk level, especially when the path and publisher are unknown.
Do not add an antivirus exclusion merely to stop an alert or allow the process to run. Microsoft warns that an exclusion means Microsoft Defender Antivirus will no longer check the excluded item, reducing protection for the device and its data.

How to identify the copy that is running
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Find
linter.exein Processes or Details. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the complete path, filename and surrounding folder before taking action. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and review Details and Digital Signatures. Note the product name, publisher, creation date and whether the signature validates.
- In Task Manager, inspect the process’s Properties and any available parent-process information. A process launched by a known editor, Python environment or project tool is different from one launched by an unfamiliar startup entry.
- Compare the path with software listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If no installed program explains it, leave the file untouched while you scan and investigate.
Never delete a file solely because its name is linter.exe. A trusted development workflow may need it, and deleting it can turn a configuration problem into a missing-executable error.
What different paths and signs mean

Why linter.exe may use CPU, memory or disk
A legitimate linter can consume resources while analyzing a large project, watching files or restarting after an editor change. A damaged extension, a loop in the language server or an incorrect path can make that activity continuous. Malware can also create unexplained background activity. Resource usage alone cannot identify which case you have.
Check whether the load is expected
- In Task Manager, note whether usage rises only during a build, file save or project scan, then falls when the editor is idle.
- Open the file location and identify the parent application. A VS Code or Python process that you intentionally launched is a useful clue; an unknown parent is not.
- Check the editor’s extension or language-server output for repeated “file not found,” restart or permission messages.
- Close the editor or project temporarily. If the process stops and does not return until the project opens, a development integration is more likely than an independent startup program.
When high usage is suspicious
Investigate urgently when the process starts with Windows even though you did not install a linter, runs from an unexplained folder, has no recognizable signature, or continues after all editors are closed. Do not “solve” the load by creating a Defender exclusion; that removes a layer of checking rather than establishing trust.
Manual malware and unwanted-software checks
Microsoft defines malware as “malicious software” and distinguishes it from potentially unwanted applications. Use the built-in security workflow before experimenting with the file.

- Update protection: open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and update security intelligence.
- Run a full scan: choose Scan options > Full scan. Keep the computer powered on until it completes.
- Review the result: open Protection history. Follow Windows Security’s quarantine or removal action for a confirmed detection; do not restore a file simply because its filename looks familiar.
- Check exclusions: under Virus & threat protection settings > Manage settings > Exclusions, remove entries you did not deliberately create. An exclusion prevents Defender from checking matching files.
- Uninstall an unknown program: go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select software you do not recognize, choose Uninstall, restart if requested, and scan again.
- Escalate persistent detections: run the current Microsoft Safety Scanner. It is a manually run removal tool and expires 10 days after download, so obtain a new copy before each scan.
- Use an offline scan: if the file returns, blocks scans or starts before normal Windows tools, select Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), then save work and allow the restart.
Microsoft Safety Scanner and Defender Offline complement, rather than replace, an up-to-date antivirus product. If spyware is confirmed or credential theft is suspected, change important passwords from a clean device. For a work computer, preserve the file path, alerts and timestamps and contact your organization’s incident-response team before wiping evidence.
Fix “linter.exe not found” for t-linter
Once scans show that the file is legitimate, repair the developer integration rather than downloading a random executable.
1. Locate the executable with the configured command
Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:
where t-linterCompare every returned path with the path shown in Task Manager and with the VS Code t-linter.serverPath setting. If the command returns nothing, the package is not on the current PATH, the Python installation changed, or the package was removed.

Open VS Code Settings, search for t-linter.serverPath, and point it to the actual t-linter.exe location. Use the full path when multiple Python installations exist. Avoid pointing the setting at a similarly named file from an untrusted download.

3. Reinstall the package or extension
If the bundled binary is missing, reinstall the VS Code extension. For a Python installation managed with pip, run:
pip install t-linterUse the same Python environment that your editor uses; installing into a different environment will not repair a path that still points elsewhere. After installation, run where t-linter again and update t-linter.serverPath if necessary.
4. Restart the language server and editor
Restart the language server from the editor’s command palette, then restart VS Code if the old process remains. Open a small project and confirm that diagnostics appear without a repeated “file not found” message.

Fix an “application error” or immediate crash
- Check architecture and environment: verify that the editor, Python installation and package belong to the environment configured for the project. A stale path can invoke an executable whose supporting files no longer exist.
- Reinstall cleanly: remove the broken extension or package, restart the editor, install it again from its official project or marketplace source, and restart the language server.
- Inspect permissions: confirm that your account can read and execute the directory. Do not grant broad permissions to an unknown file to make an error disappear.
- Test a small project: temporarily open a minimal folder. If the linter works there but fails on one repository, inspect that project’s configuration, generated files and watcher settings.
- Check logs: use the extension or language-server output panel to identify the exact command and path being launched. Correct that setting instead of replacing the executable with a file from a search result.
If Windows Security reports the executable during this process, stop treating it as a normal application error and return to the malware workflow. Reinstalling a package does not make a detected file safe.
Fix unwanted startup or recurring launches
- In Task Manager, open Startup apps and identify an entry associated with the process or its parent application.
- Disable only an entry you can identify and do not need. Record its name and publisher before changing it.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the associated program and uninstall it if you did not authorize it.
- Restart Windows and observe whether the process returns. Run another Defender scan after removal.
A legitimate editor may start its linter when a workspace opens; disabling the editor itself can break your workflow. If the process returns from an unknown path after uninstalling its visible program, treat that persistence as a security issue and use Defender Offline or professional response rather than repeatedly killing the task.
Should you delete linter.exe?

Deleting an executable from File Explorer is not a substitute for uninstalling the program that launches it. A scheduled task, startup entry or remaining extension can recreate the file or continue producing errors.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every linter.exe is a virus: legitimate development tools use the same basename.
- Assuming every linter.exe is safe: the recorded Spyware.CryptBot.Themida case shows why path and scan results matter.
- Downloading a replacement from a file-sharing site: this can introduce a second, unverified executable. Use the project’s official package or release instructions and any supplied checksum procedure.
- Adding a Defender exclusion: exclusions stop Defender checking the item and can leave the device exposed.
- Deleting first and investigating later: you may break a trusted tool or destroy evidence needed to understand an infection.
- Changing passwords on the possibly compromised computer: if spyware is suspected, use a clean device and enable multi-factor authentication where available.
- Running only a quick scan: persistent or startup behavior warrants a full scan and, when necessary, Safety Scanner or Defender Offline.

When to seek specialist help
Stop experimenting and obtain professional assistance when a work device shows a spyware detection, when multiple accounts may have been accessed, when the process returns after offline scanning, or when you cannot preserve a trustworthy copy of the evidence. Disconnecting a compromised computer from networks may be appropriate under your organization’s incident-response policy, but do not destroy logs or files that responders need. On a personal computer, prioritize account protection from a clean device, then complete removal and recovery scans before restoring normal development tools.
