What Is lightkeeperservice.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix lightkeeperservice.exe Errors on Windows

LightKeeperService.exe is usually the MSI LED Keeper Service installed with MSI Dragon Center or Mystic Light. It is not a Windows system file. A copy is more likely to be legitimate when it is in MSI’s program directory, carries a valid MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD. signature, and matches a trusted hash for the same MSI release. A copy in C:Windows or C:WindowsSystem32, an unsigned copy, or one detected by Microsoft Defender should be treated as suspicious until you complete the checks below.

What LightKeeperService.exe does

MSI uses LightKeeperService.exe for the LED Keeper Service behind its motherboard and peripheral lighting controls. It commonly arrives with Dragon Center or Mystic Light, rather than with Windows itself. The component can run as a background service so lighting settings remain available after you close the MSI control application.

File.info identifies the file as “LED Keeper Service,” produced by Micro-Star INT’L CO., LTD. FreeFixer’s sample lists the product as LED Keeper Service, the company as Micro-Star INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD., and version 2.0.0.32. Its reported usual location is:

The exact folder can differ by MSI software generation, installation drive, or product package. The filename alone does not establish that a copy is genuine.

What it is not

  • It is not a core Windows executable.
  • It is not required for Windows to boot or for ordinary desktop use.
  • It is not proof of malware merely because it runs as a service, uses memory, or appears in an error report.

Is LightKeeperService.exe safe?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer for every file with this name. Safety depends on the specific file’s location, signature, hash, origin, and behavior. A legitimate MSI installation and a malicious program can use the same filename, so check the local copy instead of relying on the name shown in Task Manager.

Compare the file against these indicators

Check Evidence that supports an MSI component Evidence that needs investigation
Location An MSI program directory, such as C:Program Files (x86)MSIOne Dragon CenterMystic_Light C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, a temporary folder, a user-download folder, or a location you do not recognize
Digital signature A valid signature from MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD. No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer unrelated to MSI
Hash A match with a trusted reference for the same MSI product and version An unknown or changing hash, or a match only to an untrusted download
Behavior Starts with MSI Dragon Center/Mystic Light and provides lighting control Unexpected persistence after MSI software removal, unexplained network activity, repeated crashes, or a Defender detection

One ThreatInfo record from GridinSoft, analyzed in 2024, lists a 5 MB sample with MD5 586695b2d7eddd6d85ac5de6be52c6d1. It was first seen on 2024-02-14 and most recently analyzed on 2024-02-22. That hash describes only the analyzed sample; it does not certify every file named LightKeeperService.exe. The same record reported that 80% of its observed hits were from Turkey and 100% were on Windows 10. Those are characteristics of that telemetry set, not an estimate of where all copies are used.

How to verify your copy safely

Do these checks before deleting, replacing, or allowing a suspicious executable to run. If you are investigating a work computer, preserve the evidence and follow your organization’s incident process instead of making changes first.

1. Open the real file location

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes or Details tab, locate LightKeeperService.exe.
  3. Right-click it and choose Open file location.
  4. Record the complete path. Do not assume that a similarly named file in another folder is the same component.

An MSI installation path is consistent with the expected component. A Windows system directory or an unfamiliar writable folder is not proof of infection, but it raises the priority of the next checks.

2. Check the signer

  1. In the opened folder, right-click the executable and select Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  3. Select the signature and choose Details.
  4. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the signer is MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD.

A missing or invalid signature does not by itself prove malware, because a damaged file or a repackaged installer can also fail validation. It does mean you should not trust the file until a scan and provenance check explain the discrepancy.

3. Calculate a hash when you need a precise comparison

For a repeatable SHA-256 value, open Windows PowerShell and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:pathtoLightKeeperService.exe"

Replace the example path with the path you recorded. Compare the result only with a reference for the same MSI product and version. Do not treat the MD5 value above as a universal “safe hash”; it is a record for one 2024 sample and is useful only when the product, version, and provenance match.

4. Scan with current Microsoft Defender intelligence

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection, then select Scan options.
  3. Run a Full scan with current security intelligence.
  4. If suspicious software persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.

Microsoft’s guidance also recommends uninstalling unwanted software. Do not download a replacement executable from a file-sharing site merely because the original is missing or damaged.

Why LightKeeperService.exe errors happen

Reported failures include “LightKeeperService has stopped working,” “LightKeeperService.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close,” memory read/write application errors, “not a valid Win32 application,” and “The program is not responding.” These messages identify a failure, not its cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common causes for a legitimate file

  • An incomplete, damaged, or mismatched Dragon Center/Mystic Light installation.
  • An update that replaced one lighting component but left another version behind.
  • Corruption after an interrupted uninstall or system change.
  • Conflicting MSI lighting components installed at the same time.
  • A file that is not the expected MSI build, including a renamed or repackaged executable.
  • Hardware or firmware changes that expose a bug in the lighting software.

A stopped service alone does not show that the file is malicious. Conversely, normal startup does not prove that it is safe.

Fix LightKeeperService.exe errors in order

Start with the least destructive option. Stop if the safety checks point to an unknown or malicious file; use the security-remediation branch instead of repeatedly reinstalling it.

1. Update the MSI lighting software

  1. Identify whether the computer uses MSI Center, Dragon Center, or a separate Mystic Light package.
  2. Use MSI’s official support channel for your exact motherboard, laptop, or peripheral model.
  3. Download the current package intended for that model and Windows edition.
  4. Close the MSI control application and run the installer with an administrator account.
  5. Restart Windows, then test whether the lighting controls and the service remain stable.

Use the vendor’s distribution rather than a third-party executable archive. An update is appropriate when the file is correctly signed and located in an MSI directory but the installation is outdated or inconsistent.

2. Reinstall the lighting component

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows).
  2. Find MSI Center, Dragon Center, Mystic Light, or the LED lighting entry associated with the service.
  3. Choose Uninstall and follow the wizard.
  4. Restart Windows after removal.
  5. Install the current package only from MSI’s official support channel.
  6. Restart again and check Task Manager, the file path, and the digital signature.

If the installer offers separate modules, install only the lighting module you need. Keeping multiple generations of MSI lighting software can leave services that refer to different files.

3. Remove the component if you do not use MSI lighting

LightKeeperService.exe is not needed for Windows itself. If you do not use Dragon Center or Mystic Light, uninstall the associated MSI software through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Restart and confirm that the service and executable no longer return.

If the service comes back after removal, check Task Manager > Startup apps and the remaining MSI entries in Installed apps. Remove the parent MSI component rather than deleting a single executable from a folder; deleting one file can leave a broken service or cause the installer to restore it.

4. Handle “not a valid Win32 application”

This message commonly means Windows cannot run the file as the expected executable. First verify the path and signature, then reinstall the matching MSI package. Do not copy a similarly named file from another computer or download site. A wrong architecture, truncated download, or tampered file requires a clean vendor installation, not a renamed replacement.

5. Handle memory-access and stopped-working errors

  1. Record whether the crash occurs at Windows sign-in, when opening MSI lighting controls, or when changing an effect.
  2. Update or reinstall the MSI lighting package.
  3. Restart and test with the default lighting profile before importing custom profiles.
  4. If the crash continues, uninstall the lighting software and verify whether Windows is stable without it.

If Windows works normally after removal, the problem is isolated to the MSI component or its interaction with the lighting hardware. Keep the component removed until MSI provides a compatible build for your model.

6. Handle “The program is not responding”

Wait briefly once to see whether the service recovers, then close the MSI application if Windows offers that option. Repeated hangs call for an update or clean reinstall rather than repeatedly terminating the process. If the executable is in an unexpected directory or Defender reports it, stop troubleshooting it as an ordinary software crash and follow the malware branch below.

What to do when the file looks suspicious

Use a cautious sequence that preserves the distinction between a broken MSI install and malware.

  1. Do not open the file or approve an unknown prompt from it.
  2. Record its path, signature status, file size, and hash.
  3. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan with current security intelligence.
  4. If Defender detects the file, allow Defender to quarantine or remove it; do not restore it merely to test whether the service starts.
  5. If suspicious behavior persists, run Microsoft Defender Offline.
  6. Uninstall unwanted MSI or unknown software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  7. After remediation, change important passwords from a device you trust if you have evidence that data or accounts may have been exposed.

Microsoft describes malware as software that can steal data, use a system for attacks, or commit other cybercrime, and says Defender attempts to block it. Microsoft Security Intelligence has also documented PUA:Win32/LightKeylogger; possible symptoms listed for that detection include slow performance, freezing, crashes, and changed files. Those symptoms are not diagnostic on their own, so rely on the scan result and file evidence.

When disabling the service is appropriate

You can disable or remove the service when you do not need MSI lighting controls. The clean approach is to uninstall the associated Dragon Center, MSI Center, or Mystic Light component. If you only stop the service in the Services console, the parent application may restart it, lighting controls may stop working, and a future update may recreate it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not disable it as a substitute for a malware investigation. A suspicious copy needs scanning and remediation, not simply a change to its startup state.

A practical decision guide

  • MSI path + valid MSI signature + clean Defender scan: update or reinstall the MSI lighting component if it crashes.
  • MSI path + valid signature + you do not use lighting controls: uninstall the related MSI software and verify that the service stays gone.
  • Unexpected path or invalid signature: do not replace the file manually; scan it, compare its hash with a trusted product reference, and quarantine it if Defender confirms a detection.
  • The service returns after uninstall: inspect Startup apps and remaining MSI components, then remove the parent package through Windows’ app settings.
  • Crashes continue after a clean reinstall: leave the lighting component uninstalled and contact MSI support with the exact model, Windows version, error text, and recorded path.

Questions readers commonly ask

Can I delete LightKeeperService.exe?

Do not delete the executable first. Uninstall the MSI lighting software that owns it. Manual deletion can leave a broken service, and a suspicious file should be scanned and quarantined rather than silently erased.

Does a clean reputation report prove my file is safe?

No. A reputation result applies to the exact hash that was analyzed. It does not certify every executable with the same filename or every later MSI build.

Why does the file appear after I removed Dragon Center?

An MSI component, startup entry, or related lighting package may remain. Check Installed apps and Task Manager’s Startup apps, then remove the remaining parent component and restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a LightKeeperService crash evidence of a virus?

No. Damaged or mismatched MSI software can crash, and a crash report does not establish infection. Use the path, signature, hash, and Defender results together.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it. It supports Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
