It can be described as a propagating electromagnetic wave, with wavelength, frequency, phase and polarization, and as a quantum field whose interactions occur in discrete units called photons. These are not two substances that light switches between. They are complementary descriptions of the same physical phenomenon, each making different measurements and experiments easier to calculate and understand.
The wave description is most useful for propagation and interference. The photon description is essential when light exchanges energy or momentum with matter, as in the photoelectric effect. Modern physics uses both, while avoiding the misleading picture of a photon as a tiny classical ball following a definite path in every experiment.

What light is
Light is electromagnetic radiation: changing electric and magnetic fields that can propagate through space. Unlike a sound wave or a water wave, this radiation does not need a material medium. The electromagnetic field can travel through a vacuum, although its behavior can also be affected by matter such as glass, metal or a detector.
In the wave description, two quantities organize much of the observable behavior:

- Wavelength (λ) is the spatial period of the wave.
- Frequency (ν) is the number of cycles per unit time.
For radiation traveling in vacuum, wavelength and frequency are related by c = λν, where c is the speed of light in vacuum. The wave description also keeps track of phase, direction, polarization and intensity. Those properties let physicists calculate reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference without imagining that a material substance is rippling through space.
Why physics uses two descriptions
Classical electromagnetic waves explain how fields spread and combine. They are especially effective when many photons are involved and the measured quantities vary smoothly, such as the intensity pattern from an optical system.
At the quantum level, the electromagnetic field has discrete excitations. A single excitation is called a photon. A photon is not a miniature version of a classical particle with a permanently defined size, surface and trajectory. It is a quantum object described by a state, and measurements reveal particular energy, momentum or detection outcomes.

The two descriptions are therefore complementary rather than competing claims about what light is “really” doing. A wave calculation can predict the probability pattern at a detector, while the quantum description explains why an individual detection transfers a discrete amount of energy. Treating the models as two classical forms that light alternates between creates more confusion than it resolves.
The wave model
What the wave model represents
The wave model represents electromagnetic radiation through quantities that vary with position and time. Wavelength determines the scale of repeating spatial features, while frequency determines the temporal rate of oscillation. Phase records where a cycle is relative to another cycle, which is why phase differences matter when waves overlap.

Superposition means that electromagnetic fields can be added mathematically. Depending on their relative phase, the sum can be larger, smaller or zero at a particular location. This produces constructive and destructive interference. The wave-vector form of the description uses a vector k to specify propagation direction and spatial variation; its magnitude is related to wavelength by |k| = 2π/λ.
What it explains well
- Propagation: how a field travels, changes direction or spreads after passing an aperture.
- Interference: how phase-related alternatives produce bright and dark regions in a detection pattern.
- Polarization: how the orientation of the electromagnetic field affects transmission through optical components.
- Continuous intensity: how the average energy flow changes across an optical beam.
These successes do not require saying that a physical material medium is waving. The “wave” is a description of the electromagnetic field and its measurable correlations, not a rope-like substance hidden behind the radiation.
Where a purely classical wave picture becomes incomplete
A classical wave distributes energy continuously. Experiments involving individual exchanges with matter instead show discrete detection events and quantized energy transfer. A wave calculation can still predict where those events are likely to occur, but it does not by itself supply the quantum rules for the individual exchange.
The photon or quantum model
Discrete energy
The 2018 CODATA report states the photon relationship
E = hν
where E is the photon energy, ν is its frequency and h is Planck’s constant. Higher-frequency radiation therefore corresponds to larger energy per photon, while lower-frequency radiation corresponds to smaller energy per photon. Increasing the intensity of a source can increase the number of photons delivered without changing the energy of each photon, provided the frequency remains the same.

where p is momentum, ℏ is the reduced Planck constant and k is the wave vector. Combining this with |k| = 2π/λ gives the familiar magnitude relation p = h/λ. Wavelength is therefore linked to momentum without treating the wave as a mechanical ripple in a substance.
Interactions and measurement
When light is absorbed, emitted or detected, the interaction is described in terms of photons and the allowed quantum states of the matter involved. A detector records a localized event, but that fact does not establish that a photon was a tiny pellet traveling along one classical route from source to detector. Quantum theory assigns amplitudes to alternatives and probabilities to outcomes; the experimental arrangement determines which alternatives can contribute coherently.
Wave and photon descriptions compared
| Question | Wave description | Photon or quantum description |
|---|---|---|
| What is represented? | Electromagnetic radiation characterized by wavelength, frequency, phase, polarization and propagation. | Quantized excitations of the electromagnetic field and their interactions with matter. |
| Most useful for | Propagation, diffraction, polarization, phase relationships and interference patterns. | Discrete energy and momentum exchange, emission, absorption and individual detection events. |
| Key relationship | |k| = 2π/λ; for vacuum radiation, c = λν. | E = hν and p = ℏk, giving p = h/λ. |
| How to picture it | A mathematical description of electromagnetic-field behavior, not a material wave. | A quantum state whose measurements yield discrete outcomes; not a miniature classical pellet with a guaranteed path. |
| Main limitation if used alone | Does not explain the quantum discreteness of individual exchanges with matter. | Can be unnecessarily complicated for large-scale propagation where classical field equations give the needed result. |
Photoelectric effect: evidence for quantized exchanges
The photoelectric effect occurs when light incident on a metal can eject electrons. It is useful because it connects a property of the incoming radiation to a measurable electrical response rather than merely to a brightness pattern.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s historical account describes a method in which the light wavelength, a retarding voltage and the ratio h/e are related. By changing the radiation and measuring the voltage needed to oppose the emitted electrons, the experiment tests the link between light’s frequency and the energy transferred to matter.

Robert Millikan first reported a result from this method in 1916, using sodium and lithium, according to that NIST account. The historical importance is not that a metal experiment turns light into ordinary particles, but that the observations require a quantized account of the energy exchange. The wave description remains relevant to the radiation arriving at the surface; the photon description explains the discrete transfer involved in ejecting electrons.
This example should not be expanded into claims about a particular modern threshold-frequency demonstration unless those details are independently established. The supported point is the relationship among wavelength, retarding voltage and h/e, and its role in the historical measurement.

Interference is not simply photon collision
It is tempting to say that two light particles meet, collide or “agree” on where to go. That language imports the behavior of classical balls into a quantum problem. Interference depends on whether alternatives are indistinguishable and can contribute coherently to the same outcome.
The specialized two-photon result
A 1996 experiment by T. B. Pittman and colleagues examined two-photon interference in an interferometer. The experiment reported that interference could be restored by compensation introduced after the interferometer, a result described as postponed compensation. Its interpretation emphasized indistinguishable two-photon alternatives, or amplitudes, rather than interference between two individual photons treated as separate classical waves.
Recommended Free Tools
This is a specialized two-photon result, not a universal replacement for every account of a single-photon interference experiment. Its significance is conceptual: even when two photons are present, the correct quantum explanation concerns the combined alternatives available to the two-photon state. A simple picture of two independent objects physically interfering is not adequate.

How to decide which description to use
- Identify the question. If you need wavelength, phase, polarization, propagation or a spatial intensity pattern, begin with the wave description.
- Check for individual exchanges. If the issue is emission, absorption, electron ejection or a detector registering one event, use the photon or quantum description.
- Track the relevant quantities. Use λ, ν and k for spatial and temporal structure; use E = hν and p = ℏk for energy and momentum.
- Look for indistinguishable alternatives. In interference experiments, ask whether the setup preserves or destroys the information that would distinguish possible paths or processes.
- Do not force a classical picture. A localized detector click does not prove a definite classical trajectory, and a wave-like pattern does not require a material wave medium.
Common misconceptions corrected
“Light is sometimes a wave and sometimes a particle.”
This wording suggests a physical transformation between two classical objects. A more accurate statement is that light has wave and quantum aspects, and different models are useful for different questions.
“A photon is a tiny ball of light.”
A photon has quantized energy and momentum, but quantum theory does not assign it all the properties of a macroscopic ball. In particular, the model does not guarantee a single classical path in every arrangement.
“Interference proves that photons bump into one another.”
Interference arises from the combination of quantum amplitudes associated with alternatives. The two-photon experiment reported by Pittman and colleagues specifically found that a classical picture of two individual photons interfering is insufficient for its result.
“The wave model and photon model make unrelated predictions.”
They are mathematically connected. The wave vector determines momentum through p = ℏk, while frequency determines photon energy through E = hν. The descriptions emphasize different observables but belong to one quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation.
Why the distinction matters in technology and physics
Optical engineering often starts with waves because lenses, apertures, polarization elements and interferometers are naturally described through fields and phase. Semiconductor detectors, solar cells and spectroscopic measurements require the quantum description because matter absorbs and emits energy in discrete transitions.
The distinction also prevents errors in interpreting measurements. A smooth beam intensity can represent an average over many detection events. At sufficiently low light levels, the same setup can produce separate clicks whose distribution follows the wave-calculated probability pattern. The wave pattern and the discrete events are not contradictory; they describe different layers of the same experiment.
The central idea
Light is electromagnetic radiation described by a wave model for propagation and interference and by a quantum model for discrete exchanges of energy and momentum. The equations E = hν, p = ℏk and |k| = 2π/λ connect the descriptions. The photoelectric effect shows why quantized exchange matters, while modern interference experiments show why photons should not be treated as tiny classical projectiles. Using both models together is not a compromise; it is the standard way modern physics describes light.
