level.exe is normally the Windows executable for Level Software’s endpoint-management (RMM) agent. On a legitimate installation, it is usually located at C:Program FilesLevellevel.exe and runs as a background service for monitoring, remote control, automation, and patch management.
It is not safe to approve every file with that name. Verify that Level was intentionally deployed, that the file is in the expected directory, and that its Digital Signatures tab identifies Level Software, Inc. If the copy is unexpected, unsigned, or stored elsewhere, investigate it as potentially unwanted or malicious software before creating any antivirus exclusion.

What level.exe does
Level’s Windows agent is an endpoint-management component. An administrator can use it to monitor a device, perform remote-control operations, automate tasks, and manage patches. Because those functions require broad access to Windows, antivirus and endpoint-detection products may scrutinize its processes, network activity, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) calls, and child-process creation.

A standard installation can also contain level.update, winpty-agent.exe, and temporary update binaries in the same Level directory. Those names are useful clues, not proof that every file in the folder is genuine.

Supported systems and installation requirements
| Requirement | Documented support |
|---|---|
| Client operating system | Windows 10 and later |
| Server operating system | Windows Server 2016 and later |
| Architecture | 64-bit systems |
| Command-based installation | PowerShell version 4 or newer |
These requirements come from Level’s Windows installation documentation dated 2026. A file on an unsupported system, or an installation that no one in your organization authorized, deserves extra scrutiny.
Is level.exe safe?
An intentionally installed Level agent can be legitimate. Level’s installation guidance states: “This is a false positive — Level is not malware — but it can block installation or cause the agent to stop functioning after install.” That statement applies to an authorized Level deployment; it does not authenticate every executable named level.exe>.
Use all three checks below before allowing the file through security controls:
- Confirm intent. Ask the person or organization responsible for the computer whether Level was deployed for support, monitoring, patching, or another approved purpose. On a managed business computer, check the software inventory or change record rather than relying on a filename.
- Confirm location. The expected path is
C:Program FilesLevellevel.exe. A copy in Downloads, AppData, a temporary directory, a user profile, or an unrelated system folder is not established as legitimate by its name alone. - Confirm the signer. In File Explorer, right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. The signer should identify Level Software, Inc. Open the certificate details and compare them with Level’s published verification guidance. Level lists DigiCert, Inc. as the issuer and publishes certificate fingerprints, while warning that values can vary by software version. Compare the certificate on the installed binary itself; a hash or certificate copied from another machine is not sufficient.
If any check fails, do not add an exclusion simply to suppress an alert. Preserve the detection details, submit the file to your security team or Microsoft for analysis, and scan the device. Microsoft distinguishes malware from potentially unwanted applications and recommends Defender scans, Defender Offline when necessary, and removal of unwanted software through Windows Settings.
Why Windows Defender or an EDR product may block it
Remote-management software has capabilities that overlap with attacker behavior. Level documents several ways an antivirus or EDR product can interfere:

- Quarantining or deleting
level.exeor an update component. - Terminating the Level process after it starts.
- Blocking outbound connections used by the agent.
- Interfering with WMI calls.
- Preventing child processes from being created.
- Throttling the process so monitoring or remote control becomes unreliable.
Behavior-based detections do not always create a conventional quarantine event. A device can therefore go offline even when the security console shows no obvious “removed file” notification. Level’s May 19, 2026 guidance also notes that EDR products should block unapproved RMM tools. That is an important distinction: a security product can be acting correctly when Level was not authorized, and it can still produce a false positive when your administrator intentionally installed Level.
What the common symptoms mean
| Symptom | Likely layer | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
level.exe is absent |
Quarantine, deletion, or an incomplete installation | Security-product history, installer logs, and the contents of C:Program FilesLevel |
| The file exists but the Level service is stopped | Execution blocked, process terminated, or service configuration problem | Service state, EDR events, and the Level diagnostic report |
| The service runs but the device is offline | Outbound firewall, proxy, or peer-to-peer connection issue | Connection checks, firewall logs, and network policy |
| Reinstall says Level is already installed | Stale service or files left by a previous uninstall | Installed-app list, service list, and remaining Level files |
| An alert appears for a copy in an unrelated folder | Impersonation, unwanted software, or an unapproved deployment | Full path, signer, hash supplied by your security team, and Defender results |
Step 1: establish provenance before changing security settings
- Record the exact detection name, full path, timestamp, and action taken by Defender or your EDR product.
- Ask whether Level was intentionally installed. If the computer belongs to an employer, school, or support provider, contact the administrator rather than making a local exception.
- Navigate to
C:Program FilesLeveland check whether the expected executable and related files are present. - Open Properties → Digital Signatures for the actual file. Verify the signer is Level Software, Inc. and inspect the certificate chain and validity dates.
- Do not trust a filename, a screenshot, or a copied certificate fingerprint without comparing it with the installed binary.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: weakening protection first and investigating provenance later.

The check reports the agent state, service state, connection checks, and active operations. Save or copy the output before changing settings. It helps separate a missing or blocked executable from a service problem and from a network failure.
If PowerShell reports that the path does not exist, do not download a replacement executable from an unverified site. Continue with the security-history review below and restore or reinstall only through your organization’s approved Level deployment process.

Step 3: inspect Defender or EDR history
Open the security product’s protection history, quarantine, and event views for the time the device became unavailable. Look for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A quarantine or deletion involving
level.exe,level.update,winpty-agent.exe, or a temporary update binary. - Process-termination events after the Level service started.
- Blocked outbound connections.
- WMI or script-control events.
- Child-process creation blocks or policy-based throttling.
Check both the local Windows Security interface and, on managed devices, the organization’s cloud console. A missing quarantine record does not prove that security software was uninvolved; Level notes that behavior-based blocks may occur without a normal quarantine event.
Step 4: recover a quarantined or missing executable
Only follow these steps when Level deployment is authorized:
- Have the security administrator review the detection and confirm that the installed certificate and path match the approved Level package.
- Restore the quarantined file only through the security product’s controlled restore process. If the product cannot restore it safely, obtain a fresh installer from the organization that deployed Level.
- Create a narrowly scoped exception for the documented executable or use a certificate-based rule when the security product supports one. Apply the rule only after authorization and testing.
- Do not exclude the entire
C:Program FilesLeveldirectory. Level warns that a folder-wide exclusion could also trust a file an attacker drops there. - Reinstall the agent after the exception is in place. Level warns that reinstalling first can lead to immediate quarantine again.
- Run
--checkand review the service and connection results after installation.
Keep the exception as narrow as your security product permits and document who approved it, which certificate or executable it covers, and when it should be reviewed.
Step 5: fix a present file with a stopped service
If level.exe is present but the Level service is stopped, first review EDR events for process termination, blocked WMI, child-process restrictions, or throttling. Correct the policy or exception, then start or restart the Level service using your organization’s normal Windows service-management procedure. Rebooting after an approved policy change can clear a process that was already terminated, but it does not fix a continuing block.

Run the diagnostic command again and compare its service state with the result in the Services console. If the service stops immediately, capture the time and corresponding security events before repeatedly restarting it; repeated attempts can obscure the original event and do not resolve an execution policy that is still active.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: fix a Level device that went offline
Most networks need only outbound TCP ports 80 and 443 for the agent’s normal communication, according to Level’s 2026 offline-troubleshooting guidance. Check Windows Firewall, any network firewall, proxy rules, DNS filtering, and EDR network controls for denied outbound traffic on those ports.
Additional TURN ports matter only for particular peer-to-peer connection failures. Do not open broad inbound access just because a remote-control session failed. Ask the network administrator to compare the timestamp of the failure with firewall and proxy logs, then permit the minimum documented outbound traffic required by the organization.
- Run
level.exe --checkand note which connection check fails. - Confirm that the computer has working DNS and ordinary outbound web access.
- Review firewall and proxy logs for blocked Level destinations or TLS inspection errors.
- Check whether an EDR policy is blocking the agent’s outbound process rather than the network itself.
- Retest after the approved rule change and record the result.
Step 7: resolve “Level is already installed” after an incomplete uninstall
A failed or interrupted uninstall can leave a stale service or files behind. Level documents a force-install flow for administrators and, when necessary, a manual service cleanup command:
sc.exe delete "Level"
Run that command only in an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell session and only when the organization intends to remove the existing Level service. Deleting a service entry without authorization can disconnect legitimate support or monitoring. After cleanup, confirm that the stale files are gone, apply any approved antivirus or EDR exception, and run the authorized installer again.
Best Value
Step 8: uninstall level.exe when removal is intentional
On an authorized installation, open an elevated PowerShell window and run:
& 'C:Program FilesLevellevel.exe' --action uninstall
Allow the organization’s management console to record the removal if the device is managed. If the service or files remain, Level provides a cleanup script that stops the process and removes C:Program FilesLevel. Use that script only when the owner or administrator has approved complete removal; deleting the folder alone can leave a stale service and create confusing reinstall errors.
After uninstalling, verify that the service is gone, the directory has been removed as expected, and no replacement executable with the same name appeared in another location. If security software still reports a suspicious copy, treat that copy separately rather than assuming it belongs to the former installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 9: handle an unauthorized or suspicious copy
If no authorized person recognizes the installation, the path is unusual, the signature is missing or belongs to another publisher, or the file fails certificate verification, do not whitelist it. Isolate the device according to your organization’s incident-response policy and preserve the detection details.
- Run a current Microsoft Defender full scan.
- If the result is inconclusive or the file keeps returning, run Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans before the normal Windows session loads.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and remove an unwanted application when Windows lists one.
- Install current Windows updates and current security intelligence updates.
- Submit a suspected false positive to Microsoft through the supported reporting process, or provide the file and event data to your security team.
Microsoft defines malware as malicious software, but a filename alone cannot establish that classification. The combination of authorization, path, signer, security events, and scan results is stronger evidence than any single clue.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
| Authorization | Path and signer | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed deployment | Expected path and Level Software, Inc. signature | Review EDR events, use the built-in check, and apply a narrowly scoped approved exception if required. |
| Confirmed deployment | Expected path but file missing | Review quarantine, restore or reinstall after the exception is approved, then rerun diagnostics. |
| Unknown deployment | Expected path or valid-looking name | Do not assume safety; confirm with the system owner before allowing execution. |
| Unknown deployment | Unexpected path, unsigned file, or mismatched signer | Do not whitelist; scan with Defender and escalate for investigation. |
| Confirmed deployment | Agent runs but is offline | Check outbound ports 80 and 443, proxy and firewall logs, and any required peer-to-peer connection path. |
What not to do
- Do not disable Microsoft Defender or your EDR product just to complete installation.
- Do not whitelist every file named
level.exe. - Do not exclude the entire Level installation folder when a file- or certificate-based rule is available.
- Do not open unnecessary inbound firewall ports for remote control.
- Do not delete a Level service or directory on a managed computer without the owner’s approval.
- Do not treat Level’s false-positive statement as proof that an unexpected copy is safe.
If the Level issue is resolved but Windows still has unrelated crashes, broken system components, invalid redirects, or persistent cleanup problems, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut. It offers a free trial by category for at least two days, then requires a subscription; it complements antivirus protection and does not replace provenance checks, Defender scans, or an EDR policy. Results vary, and no repair tool fixes every crash.
