Land carbon storage is the carbon held in terrestrial ecosystem pools: vegetation, roots, litter, deadwood and soil. Measuring it means estimating the amount of carbon in a defined area at a defined time, then—if the question concerns a trend—comparing that estimate with another time point or with a documented baseline. No single instrument measures every pool. Reliable assessments combine field plots and soil samples with land-cover data, remote sensing, activity data and, where appropriate, statistical or ecological models.
The method must match the pool, area, time interval, landscape variability and required precision. A forest inventory can measure trees at sample plots; satellite or airborne data can help map and extrapolate those observations; soil surveys or models can estimate below-ground carbon. Every result should state its boundaries, included pools, time period, method and uncertainty.

What is land carbon storage?
Land carbon storage describes carbon held in terrestrial ecosystems rather than in the atmosphere or oceans. Carbon enters plants through photosynthesis and can remain in trunks, branches, leaves, roots, dead plant material and soil organic matter. It can later be released through respiration, decomposition, fire, harvest, drainage or land-use change.
A carbon assessment starts by defining the accounting frame:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Area: the parcel, project, watershed, region or country being assessed.
- Pools: the components included in the estimate.
- Time: the date of a stock estimate or the interval used for a change estimate.
- Metric: a carbon stock, a stock change, or a broader carbon balance that also includes greenhouse-gas emissions.
Without those definitions, two apparently different carbon figures may simply be measuring different things. A project-versus-baseline comparison, for example, is not interchangeable with an absolute estimate of all carbon physically present on the land.
Which carbon pools are counted?
FAO’s Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool (EX-ACT), Guidelines, second edition (tool version 9, 2022) uses five quantifiable pools for land-use accounting. A study may include all five or only a subset, but it must say which choice it made.
| Pool | What it includes | Typical evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Above-ground biomass | Trunks, branches, leaves, stems and other living plant material above the soil | Forest or vegetation plots, allometric equations, remote sensing calibrated to field data |
| Below-ground biomass | Living roots and other plant material below the surface | Root measurements, biomass ratios or validated models linked to above-ground observations |
| Litter | Recently fallen leaves, needles, twigs and other dead surface material | Litter sampling, decomposition measurements and model inputs |
| Deadwood | Standing or fallen dead trees and woody debris | Field inventories and deadwood-specific surveys |
| Soil | Organic carbon stored in soil layers | Soil cores or auger samples, laboratory analysis, repeated surveys and models |
Pool boundaries matter. An estimate that includes tree biomass but omits soil and deadwood cannot be compared directly with a total ecosystem estimate. Depth limits, treatment of harvested wood and the handling of roots or coarse debris also need to be documented.

Carbon stock
A stock is the quantity of carbon estimated for a defined area and time—for example, the carbon in the five pools inside a forest boundary on a specified survey date. It is a snapshot, even when the estimate is produced by a model.

Stock change
A stock change is the difference between two stock estimates made on a consistent basis. The compared areas, pool definitions, land-cover classes, units and methods should match, or a documented adjustment should explain the methodological change. The interval matters: a short interval may not reveal a small soil-carbon change, while a longer interval can include disturbances that a single survey misses.
Carbon balance
A carbon balance can extend beyond stock differences by including greenhouse-gas emissions and removals associated with an intervention. In agricultural land-use accounting, EX-ACT expresses intervention effects in this broader form. A balance therefore should not be presented as though it were simply the amount of carbon stored in the land.
How do researchers calculate carbon stored in land?
Most assessments follow a chain of linked steps. The exact instruments and equations vary, but the logic is consistent.
- Define the question and boundary. State whether the goal is an inventory, a change estimate, a project-versus-baseline comparison or a broader carbon balance. Map the area and record the assessment date or period.
- Specify pools and classifications. Decide whether above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass, litter, deadwood and soil are included. Establish land-cover or land-use classes and any depth or size thresholds.
- Design sampling. Select representative field plots and soil locations. Stratification by vegetation type, soil, elevation, management or disturbance can reduce variation within samples. The design should support the desired precision rather than rely on a convenient handful of sites.
- Collect field observations. Measure tree diameter, height, species or other vegetation attributes in forest plots; collect soil samples at defined locations and depths; and record litter or deadwood where those pools are included.
- Obtain spatial and activity data. Use land-cover maps, management records, harvest or planting information, disturbance histories and sensor data to describe where conditions occur between sampled locations.
- Convert observations to carbon. Apply documented allometric equations, bulk-density and laboratory results, emission factors or other conversion methods. Record units and assumptions so the calculation can be reproduced.
- Extrapolate and model. Combine field measurements with remote sensing, statistical estimation or ecological models to produce a map or area-wide total. Models should use suitable inputs and be tested against observed data.
- Validate and quantify uncertainty. Compare predictions with independent or reserved field observations where possible. Report sampling error, model error, classification uncertainty or other material sources of uncertainty.
- Report the result with its frame. State the pools, area, dates, method, units, assumptions, validation and uncertainty alongside the carbon figure.
How do you measure carbon in forests?
Field forest inventories
Field inventories measure trees and vegetation at sample plots rather than every tree in a landscape. Crews may record species, diameter, height, tree condition and plot location. Allometric relationships convert those measurements into biomass and then carbon using the applicable inventory method. Additional observations are needed for deadwood, litter and, where included, roots.

National forest inventories commonly combine field observations with remote sensing to estimate forest characteristics at particular points in time. A well-designed sample represents the forest classes and management conditions in the assessment area; a few easily accessible plots can produce a misleading landscape estimate.
Remote sensing as a scaling tool
Optical, radar and laser observations can classify land cover, identify forest structure or help interpolate plot measurements across large areas. They do not, by themselves, provide a complete carbon-stock estimate. FAO’s forest-inventory guidance cautions that radar- and laser-derived volume or biomass estimates depend on calibration and validation with field data.
Below-ground biomass, litter, deadwood and soil are not observed in the same direct way as canopy or land cover. A satellite image can support spatial extrapolation, but the final carbon estimate still depends on field relationships, classification quality and the treatment of pools that sensors cannot see directly.
How is soil carbon measured?
Soil carbon is commonly assessed through repeated soil surveys, modelling, or a combination of both. A first survey estimates the stock under a defined sampling design. A later survey, conducted on a comparable basis, estimates whether the stock changed.

Survey-based measurement
Survey teams collect soil cores or auger samples at selected locations and depths. The samples require appropriate handling and laboratory analysis for organic-carbon concentration; a sampling tool only collects material and does not measure carbon content. Bulk density, coarse fragments, depth and the area represented by each sample affect the conversion from concentration to an area-based stock.
There is no universal soil-sampling depth, plot layout or repeat interval established for every landscape. Those choices depend on the study objective, soil variability, land use and the applicable inventory or project protocol. The same locations, depth definitions and analytical methods should be used for repeat surveys whenever the objective is to detect change.
Modelling
Models can estimate soil-carbon stocks or changes where repeated measurements are sparse, and they can complement surveys by representing litter inputs, soil processes, climate, management and observed changes. Their results depend on the quality and geographic relevance of those inputs. Models should be evaluated against measurements rather than treated as independent proof of a trend.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSoil-carbon change is difficult to detect because a small annual change can be much smaller than the existing stock, while soil properties vary substantially over short distances. More samples can improve precision, but they also increase field and laboratory costs. A single soil sample or generic soil test cannot establish a landscape-wide stock.

How should methods be compared?
No method is universally best. Compare alternatives against the same decision criteria.
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Pool coverage | Does the approach measure vegetation only, or also roots, litter, deadwood and soil? |
| Scale and resolution | Are local plot values sufficient, or is a wall-to-wall map needed? |
| Time interval | Can the repeat period detect the expected change, especially in soil? |
| Accuracy and precision | Are sampling design, calibration, validation and model evaluation adequate? |
| Cost | What field, laboratory, imagery and modelling resources are available? |
| Landscape heterogeneity | How much variation must the design represent across soils, vegetation and management? |
| Data access | Are local inventories, sensor coverage, activity records and model inputs available? |
| Verifiability | Can another analyst trace the result to observations, equations and assumptions? |
The IPCC’s land-use assessment states: “The cost of measuring changes in carbon stocks and net greenhouse gas emissions for a given area increases as both desired precision and landscape heterogeneity increase.” More detailed monitoring is therefore a design decision, not a free improvement.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling a stock a removal. A large stock does not prove that carbon increased during the reporting period. Use repeated, comparable estimates for change.
- Reporting a pool without naming it. “Forest carbon” may mean above-ground biomass only or a multi-pool total. List the included pools.
- Treating imagery as measurement of all carbon. Remote sensing needs field calibration and cannot directly observe every below-ground pool.
- Using inconsistent boundaries. Changing the mapped area, land-cover classes or soil depth between surveys can create an apparent change unrelated to carbon processes.
- Under-sampling variable soils. A few points may miss strong spatial variation. Use a design suited to the landscape and report uncertainty.
- Ignoring methodological change. If equations, sensors or laboratory procedures change, document the adjustment before comparing years.
- Overstating model outputs. A model estimate is conditional on its inputs and evaluation. Present assumptions and validation results with the estimate.

Bottom line for interpreting a carbon number
Land carbon storage is a measurable quantity only after the analyst defines the area, pools and time. Field inventories and soil surveys provide the observations; remote sensing, activity data and models extend those observations across space or between survey dates. Forest biomass can often be estimated efficiently when sensor data are calibrated to plots, while soil-carbon change usually demands careful repeated sampling, suitable modelling or both. The most defensible result is not the one with the most decimal places, but the one whose accounting boundary, method, validation and uncertainty are explicit.
