KWGT (Kustom Widget Maker) is an Android app for designing and running custom home-screen widgets. Your launcher remains the home-screen host: it provides the widget picker, grid, placement and resizing controls, while KWGT supplies the visual layout, data fields and touch actions inside the widget.
To use it, add a KWGT widget from the launcher’s widget picker, tap the empty widget to open KWGT, load or create a design, and save it. The exact menus, sizes and refresh behavior depend on your Android version, launcher, device settings and KWGT release.

What KWGT is—and what it is not
KWGT is a widget maker and runtime. It lets you assemble a home-screen panel from text, shapes, images, layered effects, functions, dynamic data and touch actions. The Google Play listing describes those capabilities as the app’s feature set; they are not a replacement for your phone’s launcher.
A launcher is the software that draws the home screen, app drawer and widget picker. It decides how many rows and columns are available, how much padding surrounds a widget, and how a widget can be resized. KWGT receives a space from that launcher and renders its design inside it.

This distinction explains many setup surprises. Installing KWGT alone does not put a panel on the home screen. You need a launcher that exposes Android widgets, and you normally need to place a KWGT widget instance before the editor can open.
KWGT versus a preset
A preset is a design file, not a launcher and not a separate widget engine. Kustom documents the .kwgt and .kwgt.zip formats. Loading one fills a KWGT widget instance with the author’s layout and settings; it does not change your launcher’s grid or create a new home screen.
How Android launcher widgets work
Android separates the widget provider from the host. KWGT acts as the provider that draws content and responds to configured actions. The launcher acts as the host that reserves a rectangle on the home screen, asks the provider to render it and forwards taps or resize changes.

- Placement: You open the launcher’s widget picker and choose a KWGT size.
- Host allocation: The launcher places that rectangle on its grid, applying its own cell dimensions and padding.
- Editing: Tapping the newly placed or empty rectangle opens KWGT’s editor.
- Rendering: KWGT draws the selected preset or your custom layer tree in the allocated space.
- Interaction: Touch actions configured in KWGT can open apps, launch shortcuts or trigger other functions supported by the design.
Android 8.0 (API level 26) introduced a system request that allows a launcher supporting pinned widgets to ask the user to place one directly. Android Developers documents this requestPinAppWidget() flow. Support is optional for launchers, so its presence and wording vary by device.
Why the launcher still matters after installation
The same KWGT design can look different in two launchers because each host supplies different grid metrics, padding and resize rules. A launcher may offer a 4×2 slot, for example, while another offers a different cell ratio or adds insets around the widget. Edge-to-edge designs are especially sensitive to those differences.

What you can build in KWGT
The app listing presents KWGT as a visual construction toolkit rather than a fixed collection of clocks. A design can combine several layers and data sources:
- Text: clocks, dates, labels, counters and other values presented with your chosen typography.
- Shapes and images: backgrounds, icons, bars, dividers and decorative artwork.
- Layered effects: groups of elements arranged to create cards, dashboards or compact controls.
- Functions and dynamic data: values that change with time or with an available data source.
- Touch actions: taps assigned to an element rather than limiting the entire panel to one action.
Those options make KWGT useful for anything from a simple clock to a multi-panel information board. The complexity is also a resource consideration: a heavily layered preset can require more processing than a single text field.

Menu labels differ among launchers and Android builds, but the workflow is consistent.
- Install KWGT. Use the official distribution route available in your region. Kustom’s download page listed stable version 3.82, build 3.82b621115, uploaded July 30, 2026, at the time of the cited listing. Release numbers and availability change, so confirm the current version before following a dated guide.
- Confirm widget access. Long-press an empty area of the home screen and open Widgets (or the equivalent launcher command). If KWGT is absent, the installation may be incomplete, the launcher may hide third-party widgets, or the device profile may restrict them.
- Place a KWGT slot. Find KWGT in the picker, choose a size and drag it to the desired home-screen page. You can usually resize it later with the launcher’s resize handles.
- Open the editor. Tap the empty KWGT area. The first tap generally launches KWGT and presents its editor or a prompt to choose a preset.
- Choose a starting point. Load a starter skin, select an existing design or begin with a blank layout. The listing describes both creation tools and preset-based workflows.
- Save and return home. Use KWGT’s save control, then press the Home gesture or button. The launcher now displays the rendered widget in the space it allocated.
If a launcher offers an “add to home screen” or pin command, it may use Android’s pinned-widget request on supported Android 8.0-and-later devices. The request still depends on launcher support and user confirmation.
Importing a .kwgt or .kwgt.zip preset
Kustom’s FAQ documents two practical import routes. You can use KWGT’s Load Preset command and select a .kwgt or .kwgt.zip file, or manually copy a preset into the Kustom/widgets folder and then import it from the app.

- Place a KWGT widget on the home screen first; this gives you an instance to edit.
- Tap that instance to open KWGT.
- Choose Load Preset.
- Select the downloaded
.kwgtor.kwgt.zipfile, or select a file copied intoKustom/widgets. - Review the result in the editor, adjust its size or data settings, and save.
A preset can depend on fonts, images, or data sources that were not bundled with the file. If an element appears blank, check whether the design expects a missing asset or permission. The file format itself does not guarantee that every external dependency travels with it.
Sizing, padding and edge-to-edge layouts
When a widget looks too small, too large or cropped, first separate launcher geometry from KWGT’s internal layout. The launcher controls the outer rectangle; KWGT controls how content is arranged inside it.
Auto sizing can produce odd results
Kustom advises caution with Auto sizing. In that mode, KWGT follows sizing information supplied by the launcher, and some launchers provide values that lead to unexpected resizing. If a design jumps between sizes or its typography changes unpredictably, inspect KWGT’s sizing settings and try a deliberate, fixed approach instead of assuming Auto is correct.
Launcher padding can prevent full-width designs
Many launchers add standard padding around widgets. Kustom’s FAQ identifies that padding as a reason a panel may not reach the screen edges even when the design itself is wide enough. Look for a launcher setting that removes or reduces widget padding, then recheck the KWGT placement and internal margins.
Why one launcher cannot be a universal reference
Grid dimensions, resize handles and edge treatment are host behaviors. A layout tuned on one launcher may need different internal margins or a different widget slot on another. Test the actual launcher and device combination you intend to use rather than treating a screenshot from another phone as a specification.

Why a KWGT widget may not update immediately
A widget is not guaranteed to redraw every second. Kustom’s FAQ explains the underlying trade-off: “Android Widgets do not know if they are currently displayed or not.” Updating continuously would consume resources while the user might not be looking at the home screen, so Kustom disables that behavior to reduce battery and performance costs, particularly for complex presets.
The visible effect depends on what the design displays. A clock, weather value or other time-sensitive field may refresh on an interval rather than on every second. A static label may appear unchanged because it has no new data. Neither case automatically means the preset is broken.
A sensible diagnostic order
- Check whether the data source itself has new information. A widget cannot display a value that its source has not provided.
- Open the KWGT editor and verify that the relevant layer or function is enabled and points to the intended source.
- Confirm any permission needed by that source, such as access to a calendar or location-based data, if the preset requires it.
- Check launcher behavior and Android battery restrictions only when the symptom suggests the app is being suspended or prevented from running.
- Compare a simple test widget with the complex preset. If the simple design updates while the complex one does not, processing load or a preset-specific dependency is more likely than a launcher-wide failure.
There is no single refresh setting that guarantees second-by-second updates for every design. Android, the launcher, the data source and the preset all influence the result.

The indexed app listing says the Pro version removes ads and enables importing presets from SD storage and external skins. That description does not establish a current price, every regional entitlement or every purchase path. Check the live listing shown for your country before paying, because store terms and feature bundles can change.

Choosing a launcher for KWGT
There is no single best launcher for every KWGT user. Use these decision points:

| How easy is resizing? | Frequent design changes are less frustrating when resize handles and grid settings are accessible. |
| Do you need blank-canvas work or preset imports? | Choose a workflow that matches whether you intend to build from scratch, use starter skins or load third-party files. |
| How much background activity is acceptable? | Complex designs and frequent data updates can use more resources; launcher and battery policies affect reliability. |
Common problems and practical fixes
KWGT is missing from the widget picker
Verify that the app is installed for the current user profile, restart the launcher, and check another home-screen page or widget category. Some launchers hide widgets until the device is unlocked or until the launcher process refreshes. If the picker still has no KWGT entry, the issue is host compatibility rather than a preset file.
The widget opens but remains blank
Open the instance in KWGT and load a known starter design. A blank result can mean that no preset has been selected, an imported design expects missing assets, or a data source has no permission or value. Testing a simple text element helps distinguish an editor problem from a preset dependency.
The design is clipped or leaves unexpected margins
Inspect launcher padding and the widget’s allocated grid size before rebuilding the design. Then review KWGT sizing rather than relying on Auto sizing. Resize the host slot and save again; a design created for a different grid ratio may need internal margin adjustments.
A preset file does not appear in Load Preset
Confirm the extension is .kwgt or .kwgt.zip, place it where the file picker can read it, and try the documented Kustom/widgets folder route. A renamed archive or an incomplete download may not be recognized as a valid preset.
Values are stale after leaving the phone idle
Start with the refresh limitation described above, then inspect the data source, permissions, launcher behavior and Android battery restrictions relevant to that particular value. Avoid assuming that forcing a constant refresh is harmless: Kustom specifically limits continuous updates to reduce resource use.
Bottom line for a first-time user
Think of the system as three layers: Android supplies the widget framework, your launcher supplies the home-screen slot, and KWGT supplies the editable design and its behavior. Place the slot first, open KWGT from that instance, load or build a preset, and then tune sizing against the launcher you actually use. Expect differences in padding, resizing and update timing, especially with complex designs, and treat release numbers and Pro entitlements as details to verify from the current official listing.
