It follows Sora, a Keyblade wielder, who travels with Donald Duck and Goofy to confront the Heartless and help restore peace. The numbered titles are not the whole story: several other entries and story presentations fill in important events, so it helps to think in terms of collections and story order rather than numbers alone.
What is Kingdom Hearts about?
The premise begins with Sora’s world under threat. He gains the Keyblade, a weapon tied to the worlds’ safety, and sets out with Donald and Goofy. Their travels take them through Disney settings, where they encounter familiar characters while facing the Heartless, creatures associated with darkness. Square Enix describes the central struggle as Sora trying to stop the Heartless’ invasion and restore peace (Square Enix’s series overview).

The Disney adventures are only one layer. The games develop an original mythology involving hearts, darkness, Keyblade wielders, and characters whose lives connect to Sora’s. It is a continuing narrative, not a set of unrelated visits to Disney worlds. You can begin with the simple premise and learn the larger mythology as the story unfolds; you do not need to know every term before starting.

Are the numbered games the complete story?
No. The series has important entries beyond its numbered main games, and the title numbers alone are not a reliable guide to the order of events. Some games focus on characters other than Sora or explain events that matter later. For example, Birth by Sleep introduces Terra, Ventus, and Aqua, trainees of Master Eraqus whose story is connected to Master Xehanort. The official manual frames their events as preceding Sora’s Keyblade journey (Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix manual).

Not every entry plays the same way, either. The official manual for Re:Chain of Memories describes it as an RPG in which cards are used during Sora’s journey through Castle Oblivion (Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX manual). Collections may also bundle a mix of games and story presentations. Check the contents of the specific edition before assuming every item is a separately playable game.
Where should a beginner start?
For a practical first playthrough, start with the earliest main-series entry available in a collection for your platform and proceed through that collection’s sequence. Treat this as a straightforward editorial route, not a universal order officially prescribed by Square Enix. Because the story has side entries and collections can package them differently, follow the included sequence rather than trying to infer chronology from title numbers.

- The compilation includes the following games: KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days (HD Remastered cinematics) KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep Final MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded (HD Remastered cinematics)
- KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 FINAL CHAPTER PROLOGUE KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance HD KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage– KINGDOM HEARTS χ Back Cover (movie)
- KINGDOM HEARTS III
Square Enix calls KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- a collection of the first six stories in the series. That is the publisher’s description of the collection, not a promise that it contains six separately playable games. Its broader KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] page presents the series’ story as culminating in KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts collection page).
How to choose a Kingdom Hearts collection
There is no one purchase recommendation that fits every platform, territory, or preference. Use the publisher’s collection page as a starting point, then confirm the exact product listing before buying.
Rank #3
- Includes Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 Remix & Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
- Catch up on the story leading up to Kingdom Hearts III
- Relive the magical adventures of Sora, Donald Duck, Goofy and friends
- Story coverage: Check which named games and story presentations the edition includes.
- Playable games or presentations: Verify whether each item is a game you can play or a story presentation. Do not assume the format from a collection’s title.
- Platform and region: Confirm that the edition is offered for your device and territory.
- Format and availability: Check whether the listing is physical or digital and whether it is currently in stock or available for purchase.
Square Enix announced that the series would launch on Steam on June 13, 2024, describing the included games from the original through KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind as the Dark Seeker Saga (Square Enix’s Steam announcement). That announcement establishes the launch date, not current availability, edition contents, or pricing in every region. Check your local storefront for those details.
What to expect from the story
Expect a light, recognizable starting point that gradually grows into a larger and more interconnected fantasy. Sora remains central, but the story also follows other Keyblade wielders and characters connected to him. The official Birth by Sleep manual describes its protagonists as young trainees and introduces the crisis surrounding Xehanort’s disappearance; this is one reason the wider story cannot be reduced to Sora’s travels alone.
You can enjoy the Disney settings and action-RPG premise without immediately understanding the full mythology. Playing in a collection’s presented sequence gives the story a practical path while avoiding the assumption that every title follows Sora or fits neatly into a simple numbered timeline.
