jre-8u351-windows-i586.exe is Oracle’s offline installer for the 32-bit (Windows x86) edition of Java SE Runtime Environment 8 Update 351. Oracle’s Java SE 8 archive lists the file at 73.40 MB. The filename is a legitimate Oracle naming pattern, but a filename alone cannot prove that a copy on your PC is genuine or safe. Verify its source, size or hash, and digital signature before running it. The release is now legacy: Java.com states that the 8u351 runtime’s secondary expiration mechanism expired on February 17, 2023, so use it only when a documented older application requires that exact runtime.

What the filename means

The name is made of four useful identifiers:

  • jre means Java Runtime Environment, the software needed to run Java applications and applets rather than develop them.
  • 8u351 means Java major version 8, update 351.
  • windows identifies the operating-system family.
  • i586 identifies the 32-bit x86 build. It is not the 64-bit package.

Oracle’s archive labels this exact file the Windows x86 Offline Installer and lists a download size of 73.40 MB. The same archive lists a smaller x86 online installer named jre-8u351-windows-i586-iftw.exe and a separate Windows x64 installer. “Offline” means the main installation payload is included in the executable; the online bootstrapper instead downloads additional files while setup runs.

The file is an installer, not the Java runtime itself. After setup completes, Windows stores the installed Java files elsewhere. Removing the downloaded executable therefore does not uninstall Java, while uninstalling Java does not necessarily delete a copy of the installer that you saved in Downloads.

Is jre-8u351-windows-i586.exe safe?

There is no safe-or-unsafe answer based on the name alone. A genuine copy downloaded from Oracle’s Java SE 8 archive can be a normal Java installer; a malware author can give a different executable the same filename.

Checks to make before opening it

  1. Identify the source. Prefer Oracle’s archive or a controlled enterprise software-distribution system. Avoid an old Java executable from an unknown mirror, file-sharing page, email attachment, or unexpected pop-up.
  2. Check the complete download. Compare the file’s size with Oracle’s listed 73.40 MB value. A mismatch can indicate an incomplete or altered download, although file-size agreement alone is not proof of authenticity.
  3. Verify the cryptographic hash when Oracle provides one. Calculate the hash with a trusted local utility and compare every character with Oracle’s published value. Do not treat a near match as a match.
  4. Inspect the digital signature. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer, and view the signature details. An absent, invalid, or unexpected signature is a reason to stop.
  5. Scan the file. Use your endpoint-security product to scan the executable before running it. If the file arrived unexpectedly or the source cannot be established, quarantine it rather than testing it by double-clicking.

These checks establish provenance more reliably than the filename. They do not turn an obsolete Java release into a current security baseline.

When a 32-bit Java installation is the right choice

Install the x86 package when the application that needs Java is 32-bit or when a legacy 32-bit browser specifically requires a 32-bit JRE. Oracle distinguishes the Windows x86 and Windows x64 packages and notes that a 32-bit browser needs the 32-bit JRE.

A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit Java, so “i586” does not mean that your entire operating system must be 32-bit. However, 32-bit Java does not replace a 64-bit runtime when a 64-bit application requires one. Some organizations keep both architectures installed for different programs; choose the architecture required by each application and confirm that the application’s vendor supports that arrangement.

How to install it manually

Use this sequence when you have a legitimate compatibility reason to deploy 8u351.

  1. Confirm the application requirement. Check the application’s documentation or administrator guidance for Java version and architecture. Do not install an old runtime merely because a random prompt mentions Java.
  2. Obtain the exact installer. Download jre-8u351-windows-i586.exe from Oracle’s Java SE 8 archive or your organization’s controlled repository. Save it to a known folder rather than executing an unknown temporary download.
  3. Verify it. Compare the download size with 73.40 MB, compare a published checksum when available, inspect the signature, and scan the file.
  4. Close Java applications. Save work and exit the program that will use Java. If this is a managed computer, coordinate with the administrator because installation changes system software.
  5. Run with administrative permissions. Right-click the executable and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt only after confirming the file’s source and signature.
  6. Complete Java Setup. Follow the wizard, review the destination and options it presents, and allow setup to finish without shutting down Windows.
  7. Test the dependent application. Reopen the program that required 32-bit Java and confirm its own Java detection or diagnostic screen. A successful installer does not guarantee that every application is compatible.
  8. Retain or remove the installer deliberately. Keep a verified copy only when your support process needs it. Otherwise, delete the downloaded executable after installation; that removes the installer, not the installed JRE.

The offline package is useful on restricted networks because it contains the installation payload. Oracle says the online installer downloads additional files and relies on the system Internet and proxy settings; a firewall or incorrect proxy can terminate that bootstrapper before installation starts.

Fix a proxy or Internet-connection error

This problem is most associated with the online -iftw.exe bootstrapper, not with the payload already included in the offline executable.

  1. Retry with the verified offline installer so setup does not need to fetch the main payload.
  2. If policy requires the online installer, open Internet Options in Windows, review the Connections and LAN settings proxy values, and make sure they match the network provided by your organization or Internet service.
  3. Check whether a firewall, authentication portal, or endpoint policy blocks the Java download servers. Ask the network administrator for the approved proxy settings instead of bypassing security controls.
  4. Download again after the connection is corrected and verify the resulting file before running it.

Oracle’s installer guidance ties online setup to Windows Internet settings, so changing a browser-only proxy may not fix a system-level configuration problem.

Fix a failed uninstall, reinstall, or error 1603

A failed Java uninstall can leave registry entries that make a later installation believe an older product is still present. A generic installer message, including a 1603-style failure, does not identify one universal cause, so work through the cleanup path rather than deleting random Java folders.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows) and uninstall the Java entry normally.
  2. Restart Windows, then try the installation again with the verified offline executable and administrator rights.
  3. If uninstall still fails or the old entry remains, use Microsoft’s program-install and uninstall cleanup utility, following the utility’s prompts to remove the damaged Java installation record.
  4. Restart again and retry setup. Keep the cleanup utility’s diagnostic result if the computer is managed or the issue must be escalated.
  5. Only as a last-resort administrative procedure, export the relevant Java uninstall registry key before removing it manually. Registry editing can break other software; do not delete keys simply because they contain the word “Java,” and do not skip the backup.

Do not install multiple copies repeatedly without cleaning the failed entry first. Repeated attempts can leave more incomplete records and make the original error harder to identify.

Use silent installation and a diagnostic log

For scripted deployment or troubleshooting, Oracle documents command-line switches for the offline installer:

  • /s runs a silent installation.
  • /L writes an installation log.

Oracle’s example is:

jre-8-windows-i586.exe /s /L C:pathsetup.log

For 8u351, apply the same switches to your verified 8u351 executable and choose a log path that the account can write. In a deployment script, quote a path containing spaces and capture the process exit code. Inspect the end of the log to determine whether setup completed or stopped during a particular action. A silent command suppresses the user interface; it does not make an untrusted installer safe or guarantee that the dependent application will work.

Fix a download, decompression, or temporary-space failure

Redownload incomplete media

A partial download can produce an invalid executable or a decompression error. Delete the suspect copy, download the file again from the controlled Oracle source, and compare its size or checksum before launching it. Do not attempt to repair an executable by renaming it or extracting it with an unrelated archive tool.

Free space used by Windows TEMP

Installers commonly expand files into the directory referenced by the Windows TEMP environment variable. If setup reports decompression trouble or insufficient temporary space, check free space on that drive, remove unneeded temporary files using Windows’ storage tools, and retry. The available space must cover both the installer and the temporary expansion area; a drive with room for the 73.40 MB download can still be too full for setup.

Retry with elevation

Run the installer as administrator after confirming the file’s provenance. If a managed security product blocks the process, use the organization’s approved exception or software-deployment channel rather than disabling protection broadly.

Can you delete the file?

Yes, you can delete the downloaded jre-8u351-windows-i586.exe after installation if you no longer need the installer. Deleting it does not remove Java from Windows and will not repair an application that depends on Java.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To remove the installed runtime, use Windows’ installed-apps list or Programs and Features, select the Java entry, and choose Uninstall. Remove only the architecture and version you have confirmed is no longer needed; a legacy 32-bit program may stop working if its required runtime is removed. If uninstall fails, follow the cleanup procedure above instead of deleting registry entries or program folders at random.

Should you still use Java 8 Update 351?

8u351 is not a current security baseline. Java.com records the release-specific warning: “For systems unable to reach the Oracle Servers, a secondary mechanism expires this JRE (version 8u351) on 2023-02-17.” The same guidance says Oracle recommends updating with each Critical Patch Update and that 8u351 should not be used after the next scheduled critical patch update. The stated expiration date has passed.

If a business or industrial application is certified only for 8u351, document that dependency, restrict the runtime to that application, limit unnecessary network access, and obtain the installer from a controlled archive. Plan a vendor-supported migration. If no application requires 8u351, install a currently supported Java release that the application’s vendor supports rather than selecting an obsolete runtime because its filename is familiar.

Do not assume that installation paths, helper-file junction names, or PATH behavior described for 8u351 are identical to newer Java 8 releases. Later releases changed some of those details, so update scripts and documentation after a migration and test the application under the replacement runtime.

How to compare a legacy x86 JRE with a newer runtime

Decision axis Questions to answer Why it matters
Application compatibility What Java major/update level and vendor does the application support? A newer runtime may fix security issues but still fail an application that expects older behavior.
Architecture Is the application 32-bit, 64-bit, or able to use either? A 32-bit application may require the x86 JRE even on 64-bit Windows.
Support and security status Does the vendor still provide updates for the proposed runtime? 8u351’s 2023 expiration warning makes it unsuitable as a general current baseline.
Deployment constraints Can the computer reach download servers, or must installation be offline? The offline package avoids the online bootstrapper’s proxy dependency.
Manageability Can setup run silently and produce a log? /s and /L support controlled deployment and diagnosis.

There is no general performance conclusion to draw from the filename or architecture alone. Choose on compatibility, support status, network policy, and operational manageability, then test the actual application.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

  • Confirm that the application genuinely needs Java 8 and the 32-bit architecture.
  • Use Oracle’s archive or an approved internal repository, not an unknown mirror.
  • Verify 73.40 MB, a published checksum when available, the digital signature, and a security scan.
  • Prefer the offline installer on restricted or proxied networks.
  • Run setup as administrator and allow the wizard to finish.
  • For failed reinstallations, uninstall normally, use Microsoft’s cleanup utility if necessary, restart, and retry.
  • For decompression errors, redownload and free space on the Windows TEMP drive.
  • For managed deployment, use silent mode and a log, then inspect the log’s final entries.
  • Delete the downloaded installer only when you no longer need it; uninstall Java separately.
  • Treat 8u351 as a documented legacy dependency and move to a supported release when the application vendor permits.
