The submarine is Italy’s U212NFS, a next-generation diesel-electric boat for the Italian Navy. Its second unit reached keel-laying at Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard on 1 October 2026, so construction is already underway; delivery is scheduled for 2030. The programme covers four submarines and is managed through OCCAR.
What is the U212NFS?
The U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) is an Italian Navy submarine programme and an evolution of the earlier U212A class. Fincantieri says the new class reflects more mature design, a higher level of Italian-developed technology and closer integration of onboard systems. The 1 October 2026 keel-laying ceremony was for the programme’s second submarine, at Muggiano, where Fincantieri says it has built more than one hundred submarines.

The phrase is no longer accurate for the second boat: keel-laying marks a construction milestone, and the ceremony took place on 1 October 2026. Fincantieri schedules delivery of that submarine for 2030. The announcement does not give a delivery date for each of the other three boats.

What technology is new, and what does “stealth” mean here?
Fincantieri identifies two programme innovations: a lithium-ion propulsion battery and a new combat management system. It says these are intended to improve stealth, endurance, efficiency and cyber resilience, alongside the class’s more integrated onboard systems. Those are the manufacturer’s stated benefits, not publicly reported results from independent performance testing.
In this context, “stealth” is a claimed operational advantage, not a published numerical rating. The official announcement does not provide acoustic measurements, submerged endurance figures, battery specifications or test results, so it does not establish how much quieter or longer-ranging the U212NFS is than its predecessor.

Is it really an 1,800-ton submarine?
The 1,800-ton figure in the headline is not confirmed by Fincantieri’s 1 October 2026 announcement, which gives no displacement figure. A 2 October 2026 report by Interesting Engineering gives a submerged displacement of 1,750 tons. That is a secondary-source figure, and the available sources do not explain the difference between it and the rounded 1,800-ton headline description.
