irftp.exe is a built-in Windows command for sending files over an infrared (IrDA) link. On a normal installation, the executable is located at %SystemRoot%System32irftp.exe. Microsoft documents it for Windows 10, Windows 11, and supported Windows Server releases. The filename alone does not prove that a running process is safe: verify the complete path, Microsoft signature, and security-scan result. A differently named file such as ir_ftp.exe, particularly when it runs from outside System32 or is configured to start with Windows, deserves investigation because that name is associated with the IRFTP Trojan in security references.
Most irftp errors are not caused by a damaged executable. They occur because the computer lacks working infrared hardware, infrared is disabled, the two devices have not established a link, the source file is unavailable, or Windows cannot write to the destination. The procedure below checks those conditions before you consider replacing or removing anything.

What irftp.exe does
Microsoft describes the command in one sentence: “Sends files over an infrared link.” IrFTP is the command-line interface to Windows’ Wireless Link functionality. It does not provide a general network transfer service and it cannot send a file through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, or the internet. Both endpoints need infrared capability, the infrared feature and its drivers must be working, and the devices must form an infrared link before a transfer can begin.

irftp [<drive>:] [[<path>] <filename>] [/h][/s]irftp C:example.txtsends the named file./sopens the Wireless Link dialog so you can select files. Runningirftpwithout parameters has the same dialog-oriented behavior./hsends in hidden mode.
The switches affect how the transfer is started; they do not create an infrared connection. If Windows cannot see an infrared adapter or the receiving device is not in range and ready, changing the switch will not solve the underlying problem.
Is irftp.exe safe or a virus?
A genuine Windows copy is normally safe, but the name is not a security verdict. Malware can use a similar name, and a legitimate file can be copied or replaced. Judge the file using several checks together.
Expected location
The documented Windows location is %SystemRoot%System32irftp.exe. On most installations, %SystemRoot% expands to C:Windows, but use the environment variable rather than assuming a drive letter. A copy in a user profile, a temporary directory, a download folder, or an unrelated program directory is not the documented system binary and should be treated as suspicious until verified.

Do not confuse irftp.exe with ir_ftp.exe
irftp.exe and ir_ftp.exe are different filenames. Security references, including a BleepingComputer database entry, associate ir_ftp.exe with the IRFTP Trojan and describe it as undesirable. That warning does not mean every file containing “irftp” is malicious, nor does it make the Microsoft System32 file unsafe. Check the exact spelling, path, signer, and scan result.
Check the signature and file properties
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures if the tab is present. Review the signer, signature status, and the file’s location. An absent, invalid, or unexpected signature is a reason to investigate; it is not, by itself, proof of malware because signature presentation can vary by Windows component and installation state.
Do not delete the System32 copy merely because it appears in Task Manager or a process list. First establish which file was opened and whether its behavior is consistent with an infrared transfer. Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can show the executable path, the process that opened a file, and the DLLs loaded by that process. Those details are useful when a similarly named file is running from an unexpected directory.

Where should irftp.exe be located?
For supported Windows installations, start with:
%SystemRoot%System32irftp.exeTo see which executable Windows resolves for the command, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
where irftpCompare the returned path with the expected System32 location. The command can return more than one result if another directory contains a file with the same name; an unexpected earlier match can cause Windows to run the wrong binary. Record every path before making changes.
To inspect a particular file, right-click it in File Explorer and use Properties. Record the full path, file version, publisher or signer, and signature status. If you need help from a security or Windows support team, also preserve the file hash and the exact alert text rather than renaming or deleting the file first.
How to fix an irftp.exe infrared-transfer error
Work through these checks in order. They separate a missing infrared link from a damaged or suspicious executable and avoid destructive changes that can make diagnosis harder.
1. Confirm the command and executable
- Open Command Prompt (Admin). In Windows 10 or 11, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run
where irftpand copy the complete result. - Check that the intended file is
%SystemRoot%System32irftp.exe. If the result points elsewhere, inspect that file’s properties and signature before running it. - Use the documented form with a real file path, for example
irftp C:UsersYourNameDocumentsexample.txt. Replace the example with an existing file; do not type the angle brackets shown in syntax documentation.
If where irftp finds nothing, Windows may not have the command on the current path, the system component may be missing, or the command may be typed incorrectly. Capture the exact message and Windows build instead of downloading a replacement executable from an unofficial site.

IrFTP requires actual infrared functionality at both ends. Check the computer and the receiving device for an infrared sensor or an IrDA adapter, and confirm that the adapter is enabled. A USB device that only provides Bluetooth or Wi-Fi cannot satisfy this requirement.

- Make sure the infrared adapter appears in Windows hardware settings without a warning icon.
- Confirm that an appropriate device driver is installed and the device is enabled rather than disabled.
- Place the devices within the adapter’s intended range and alignment; infrared generally needs a clear line of sight.
- Wait for Windows to detect the other endpoint and establish the infrared link before starting IrFTP.
If no infrared device appears at all, the problem is at the hardware, connection, driver, or Windows-device-detection layer. IrFTP cannot create a link when the operating system has no working infrared endpoint to use.
3. Try the dialog and direct-file forms separately
Use the direct form first with a small test file whose path contains no unusual characters:
irftp C:Temptest.txtIf you prefer to choose a file interactively, run:
irftp /sYou can also run irftp with no parameters to open the Wireless Link dialog. If the dialog opens but the transfer fails, the executable itself is launching and the remaining issue is likely link detection, file access, or the receiving endpoint. If the dialog never appears, note whether Command Prompt reports a missing command, an access-denied message, or another exact error.

4. Check the source file and destination permissions
Confirm that the source file still exists at the path you supplied. A moved, renamed, or inaccessible source produces a failure that can look like an IrFTP problem. Try a file in a directory you can read, such as a test file in your user Documents folder.
The receiving side must be able to write the incoming file. Check that its destination folder exists, has free space, and permits the receiving account to create files. If the destination is controlled by another account or protected by restrictive permissions, choose a writable folder for testing. Avoid changing broad permissions on system directories just to make one transfer work.
5. Distinguish current Windows behavior from an old permission bug
Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB252688 describes a Windows 2000 problem in which received files moved from a temporary folder inherited restrictive permissions. The documented workaround was adding the user to the Power Users group. That article is specific to Windows 2000 and should not be treated as a fix for Windows 10, Windows 11, or current Windows Server systems.

On a supported modern release, do not add users to a privileged group solely because an old article mentions it. Instead, record the current error, test a normal writable destination, and review the receiving account’s permissions. If the same failure persists, continue with the device, driver, link, and security checks below.

A file can fail to open or be replaced because another process has a handle on it. Process Explorer can identify which process opened the file and display loaded DLLs. Use it to answer specific questions: Is the running image the System32 file? Which process launched it? Is an unrelated program opening a similarly named copy?
Do not terminate random processes or unload DLLs merely because they appear in the listing. Note the process name, full path, parent process, and time of the event. Those records help distinguish a normal transfer from persistence or tampering.
7. Scan when the path, signature, or behavior is suspicious
If the file is outside the expected path, has an invalid or missing signature, uses the ir_ftp.exe spelling, or behaves unlike a transfer command, run an up-to-date Microsoft security scan. Let the security product identify the file before you quarantine or remove it. Preserve the full path and hash so a support technician can identify exactly what was detected.
A scan result is more useful when paired with the file’s location and signature status. A clean result does not turn an unexpected filename into a documented Windows component, and a detection should not be dismissed simply because the file name resembles irftp.exe.
8. Collect evidence before escalating
Escalate to your device manufacturer, administrator, or Microsoft support when no infrared device appears, the link repeatedly drops, or a current Windows error code continues after the basic checks. Include:
- The exact error message and any numeric code.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build.
- The output of
where irftp. - The executable’s full path, version, signer, and signature status.
- The infrared adapter model and whether it appears in hardware settings.
- The source and destination paths used for the test.
- The security-scan result and, if applicable, the file hash.
There is no current Microsoft error-code catalog dedicated specifically to irftp.exe, so the exact message and environment are essential for choosing the next diagnostic step.

Do not delete the documented System32 copy as a routine cleanup step. It is a Windows component used for infrared file transfers, and removing system files can create additional servicing or integrity problems. If you never use infrared, leaving the file in place is safer than manually deleting it.
If you find a separate copy, especially ir_ftp.exe outside System32 or an entry that launches at startup, investigate it as a potential unwanted or malicious file. First record its path and hash, inspect its properties, and run a current Microsoft security scan. Quarantine or remove it only when the security product or a qualified technician identifies it, and follow the security product’s recovery process if it is a false positive.

Why irftp.exe may keep failing
Repeated failures usually fall into one of four categories:

Practical command examples
These examples use the documented syntax and are intended for testing after the infrared link is ready:
- Send a file from the root of the C: drive:
irftp C:example.txt. - Send a file in a subfolder:
irftp C:UsersYourNameDocumentsexample.txt. - Open the Wireless Link selection dialog:
irftp /s. - Run the dialog behavior without switches:
irftp. - Request hidden-mode sending:
irftp /h C:example.txt.
Use the actual path and filename on your computer. If a path contains spaces, quote it in Command Prompt, for example irftp "C:UsersYourNameMy Documentsexample.txt". A successful command launch still depends on the receiving device accepting the transfer.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The documented path and command syntax establish what a normal Windows installation provides. They do not prove that every file with the same name is authentic. Conversely, an error while using the genuine System32 file does not prove corruption or infection; a missing infrared link is a more direct explanation when no device is detected.
The historical KB252688 permission behavior demonstrates that file permissions have caused IrDA transfer problems on older Windows versions, but it does not establish how common that issue is today. Treat current failures according to the current Windows build, account permissions, adapter, and exact error rather than importing assumptions from Windows 2000.
