What Is iPad Pro Tandem OLED? How Apple’s Ultra Retina XDR Display Works

Tandem OLED is the iPad Pro’s two-panel OLED display architecture. Apple stacks and aligns two OLED emission panels so they share the work of producing light. The result is OLED’s pixel-level blacks and contrast with unusually high brightness across a large tablet screen.

Apple calls the complete display system Ultra Retina XDR. It is not a two-screen device: the two panels act as one image-producing display. The technology first appeared in the May 2024 M4 iPad Pro and is used in both sizes of the current M5 iPad Pro.

What does “tandem OLED” mean?

OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode. Each pixel makes its own light, so an OLED panel does not need the conventional backlight used by an LCD. A pixel can turn completely off for very dark blacks, while neighboring pixels remain bright.

Tandem means that two OLED emission panels are stacked and optically aligned. They work together to create one picture; they are not independently viewable screens. Apple describes the arrangement and its purpose in its OLED support document: Apple’s iPad Pro OLED support page.

Why put two OLED panels in a tablet?

Large screens are harder to drive brightly than phone-sized OLED panels. A tablet is often asked to produce high brightness over most or all of its surface, not just in a small highlight. Driving one OLED layer that hard can increase power use, heat and stress on the emitting material.

With tandem OLED, both panels contribute light. Sharing the brightness workload makes high full-screen output more practical at iPad size while preserving OLED’s pixel-level control. Apple confirms the two-panel design and its high-brightness purpose, but does not publish a complete panel-stack schematic or a detailed explanation of how electrical current is divided. More specific claims about voltages, materials, suppliers or layer construction should therefore be treated as industry interpretation, not Apple-confirmed specifications.

The actual assembly is more complex, but the important distinction is that both OLED layers contribute to the same image.

Tandem OLED versus Ultra Retina XDR

These terms describe different things:

  • Tandem OLED is the underlying panel architecture: two stacked OLED panels.
  • Ultra Retina XDR is Apple’s name for the complete iPad Pro display system, including the tandem panel, HDR behavior, brightness, color management, ProMotion, True Tone, lamination and glass coating.

Apple introduced the terms together with the 2024 M4 iPad Pro and continues to list tandem OLED as part of the current Ultra Retina XDR display. “XDR” is Apple’s extended-dynamic-range branding: in compatible content, very dark areas and intense highlights can appear in the same image while retaining detail.

HDR has to be present in the content and supported by the app or service to use that range fully. A peak-nit number also does not mean the entire display remains at that level continuously.

Current iPad Pro tandem OLED specifications

Apple’s current specification page lists the following for the M5 iPad Pro. The 11-inch and 13-inch models use the same named display technology and brightness ratings; resolution and physical size differ.

These figures come from Apple’s iPad Pro technical specifications. “1,600 nits” is a peak HDR highlight figure; it is not a promise that a full white screen stays at 1,600 nits. The 1,000-nit ratings describe maximum full-screen output for SDR and XDR.

What OLED benefits are general, and what does tandem add?

Benefits of OLED itself

  • Pixels can switch off individually for very deep blacks.
  • High contrast without an LCD backlight.
  • Thin panel construction and fast pixel response.
  • Precise control of light at pixel level.

Benefits associated with Apple’s tandem implementation

  • High brightness across a large tablet-sized area.
  • 1,000-nit maximum full-screen SDR and XDR brightness.
  • 1,600-nit HDR highlights for compatible content.
  • Strong contrast between dark portions and bright highlights in HDR scenes.

Apple says its implementation provides sub-millisecond control of each pixel’s color and luminance. That is an Apple claim about this display, not a universal performance guarantee for every tandem OLED panel.

Which iPad Pro generations have tandem OLED?

2024 M4 iPad Pro

Apple announced the M4 iPad Pro on May 7, 2024, with store availability beginning May 15. Both the 11-inch and 13-inch versions introduced Ultra Retina XDR with tandem OLED. Details appear in Apple’s announcement: Apple unveils the M4 iPad Pro.

Current M5 iPad Pro

Apple’s current product and specification pages identify the iPad Pro as an M5 model, and both 11-inch and 13-inch sizes list tandem OLED. See Apple’s current iPad Pro page and the technical specifications.

Older iPad Pro generations do not all use tandem OLED. Previous models used LCD, including mini-LED-backed LCD in the 12.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR iPad Pro.

Tandem OLED versus the previous mini-LED iPad Pro

The 12.9-inch mini-LED iPad Pro used an LCD panel illuminated by many local-dimming backlight zones. Tandem OLED creates light at each pixel instead. The available Apple specifications do not provide a complete laboratory side-by-side measurement set, so the practical comparison below describes technology-level trade-offs rather than a universal brightness winner.

Consideration Tandem OLED iPad Pro Mini-LED/LCD iPad Pro
Black level Pixels can turn off individually Backlight zones dim behind the LCD; dark areas depend on zone control
Bright objects on dark backgrounds Pixel-level control avoids the same zone-halo behavior associated with LCD local dimming Blooming can be visible around bright objects, depending on content and viewing conditions
Full-screen brightness Apple rates current models at 1,000 nits maximum full-screen LCD/mini-LED can be very bright; exact results vary by model and test conditions
HDR highlights Apple rates peak HDR brightness at 1,600 nits Peak and sustained output depend on the particular mini-LED implementation
Static interfaces Has OLED image-persistence and burn-in considerations Does not have OLED burn-in as a display-specific risk
Best fit Viewers and creators prioritizing pixel-level contrast, HDR and fast response Users prioritizing static-content comfort or avoiding OLED retention concerns

Neither technology wins every use case. Brightness depends on whether you measure the whole screen or a small window, whether content is SDR or HDR, automatic-brightness behavior, thermal limits, ambient light and the content’s mastering.

Is tandem OLED better for movies and HDR video?

Usually, it is most noticeable in dark-room viewing and HDR material. Black letterbox bars and shadow detail can remain very dark while specular highlights—such as sunlight, fire or reflections—become intense. Pixel-level control also changes the way bright objects appear against dark backgrounds compared with a zoned LCD.

The benefit is smaller when you mostly watch SDR video, low-quality streams or content mastered without meaningful HDR highlights. Streaming service support, app output, compression and room lighting all affect the result. The 1,600-nit specification describes brief or limited-area highlights, not a continuously 1,600-nit full-screen image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it better for drawing, photography and video editing?

Artists can benefit from high contrast, fast pixel response and a bright, well-laminated surface. Dark interface elements and Pencil strokes remain easy to distinguish, while P3 wide color supports workflows that use that gamut. Photographers and video editors gain a more capable HDR preview surface, but display hardware does not replace a color-managed workflow, appropriate reference standards or calibrated source material.

Glare can matter more than panel technology in a bright studio or office. Nano-texture glass is offered only with 1TB or 2TB configurations. It is intended to reduce reflections and Apple includes a polishing cloth, but Apple does not publish an independent reflection or sharpness measurement. It can be preferable in controlled professional environments and less appealing to people who prefer the punchiest glossy appearance.

Does iPad Pro tandem OLED suffer from burn-in?

It can. Apple distinguishes image persistence, a temporary residual image that should fade with normal use, from burn-in, more persistent retention that can occur in extreme cases such as a high-contrast static image shown at high brightness for a prolonged period. Tandem OLED does not eliminate that OLED characteristic.

Other display limitations to know

Low-brightness scrolling behavior

Apple says slight blur or color changes may be visible when scrolling against black backgrounds at reduced brightness. This is described as a normal OLED characteristic, not automatically a defective panel.

Viewing-angle changes

Apple also identifies possible viewing-angle color shifts among OLED characteristics. The effect and noticeability vary with angle, content and ambient light.

Glare and glass choice

Glossy glass can reflect windows and overhead lights. Nano-texture may help in bright environments, but it is tied to higher-capacity configurations rather than being a standalone, low-cost option.

Who should pay for tandem OLED?

New buyers

Choose iPad Pro when HDR video, photography, video editing, illustration, color-sensitive work or the best available iPad display is central to your purchase. If you mainly read, browse, email and watch SDR video, an iPad Air or a discounted older iPad may deliver better value.

Owners of M1 or M2 iPad Pro models

The display upgrade is easiest to justify if you notice LCD blooming, want OLED blacks, work in HDR or spend substantial time creating visual content. Performance needs, accessory compatibility and price still matter; the display alone is not a universal upgrade requirement.

Owners of the 2024 M4 iPad Pro

Apple’s published M5 specifications retain the same tandem OLED and Ultra Retina XDR architecture. They do not establish that the M5 panel is visibly better than the M4 panel. Upgrade decisions should therefore rest on other changes or condition and resale value, not an assumed display leap.

Creative professionals

The contrast, HDR capability, P3 color and responsive surface can be valuable, especially when the iPad is part of a color-managed workflow. Consider room lighting, static timelines and the cost of nano-texture glass before selecting a configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Casual users and iPad Air shoppers

If you keep brightness low, rarely view HDR and do not notice blooming, tandem OLED may be a luxury rather than a necessity. Compare the complete cost and the work you actually do on the screen, not just the specification headline.

Bottom line

Tandem OLED is chiefly a way to bring OLED’s pixel-level blacks and contrast to a large tablet while sustaining high brightness across the screen. The current M5 iPad Pro pairs that architecture with Ultra Retina XDR ratings of 1,000 nits full-screen brightness, 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It is a meaningful display upgrade for HDR viewers and visual creators, but mini-LED and less expensive iPads remain sensible choices for static-content users, satisfied owners and buyers who will not use the extra range.
