Internet talk radio is spoken-word audio programming delivered over the Internet. It may be a live stream, a scheduled program, an archived show or a downloadable episode; it does not have to be broadcast live or received on a traditional radio.
What makes audio internet talk radio?
The term combines two ideas: talk describes the speech-centered content, while internet identifies how it reaches listeners. Interviews, discussions and commentary are typical examples. The defining feature is internet delivery—not a particular device, broadcast frequency or listening app.

That makes internet talk radio a broad descriptive phrase, not a precise technical standard. A station stream, an online simulcast of a terrestrial program, or an archived interview can all fit the ordinary-language meaning, depending on how the program is presented.

How does internet talk radio work?
A program is made available through an internet connection. The listener might tune in to audio as it is streamed, or access a recording later as an archived or downloadable file. The Internet Society’s history of the Internet describes the network’s evolution to support real-time audio and video; an internet connection can also deliver audio files for later listening.

How is internet talk radio different from podcasts and traditional radio?
Traditional radio commonly refers to broadcasting over terrestrial radio spectrum. Internet talk radio is distinguished by internet delivery, which can reach listeners through a live stream or audio they access later. A terrestrial station’s online simulcast has both forms of distribution.

Podcast and internet talk radio can overlap in everyday usage, especially when both refer to spoken-word episodes available online. The phrase “internet talk radio” does not establish a universal rule that every podcast is radio, or that internet radio must be live. Use the label that best describes the specific program and how it is distributed.
Where did internet talk radio begin?
Carl Malamud’s Internet Talk Radio project began on April Fools’ Day in 1993 through the Internet Multicasting Service. Its “Geek of the Week” series featured interviews with computer experts. In the project archive’s account, Malamud recalls: “we’d start a radio program for the Internet called Geek of the Week and people would ftp audio files onto their workstations to listen.” The archive describes listeners retrieving audio files via FTP, an early example of on-demand internet audio rather than a requirement for live streaming. See the Internet Multicasting Service archive’s 1993 Internet Talk Radio history.

Internet audio also included live events. A May 31, 1993 notice for “NPR Meets the Internet” described an Internet Town Hall event that combined with a “Talk of the Nation: Science Friday” rebroadcast, enabling computer users to ask host Ira Flatow questions through the MBONE. The notice illustrates that live networked programming existed alongside downloadable shows; it does not mean all internet talk radio was live. The phrase tells you that the programming is centered on speech and distributed over the Internet. On its own, it does not specify whether a show is live, whether it also airs on terrestrial radio, whether it follows a station schedule, or whether it is offered as individual episodes. Those details require context about the particular program.
