Learners then connect those contributions to explain a phenomenon, solve a problem, create an outcome or develop a new question. The essential test is integration: studying several subjects around one theme is not enough unless learners use the subjects together.
This approach can make curriculum knowledge more relevant and help learners practise transfer, inquiry and perspective taking. It also demands deliberate design: clear subject goals, shared planning time, explicit teaching of connections and assessment that measures both disciplinary understanding and synthesis.

What makes learning interdisciplinary?
In a genuine interdisciplinary unit, the disciplines are not decorative labels. Each contributes something necessary to the shared intellectual task. Science may supply methods for observing and testing; mathematics may provide models and ways to quantify; geography may explain place and spatial relationships; language arts may help learners interpret evidence and communicate a position. Learners are expected to connect these contributions rather than complete unrelated assignments in parallel.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) describes integration as a way to create new understanding. Both descriptions put intention and connection at the centre. A unit can be called interdisciplinary only when its question, activities and assessment require learners to draw on more than one disciplinary perspective.

Terminology is not standardized. An archived U.S. Department of State curriculum resource notes that education has no single accepted taxonomy for labels such as integrated, multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary, thematic and project-based. The boundaries below are therefore useful working distinctions, not universal rules.
| Approach | How disciplines relate | What to look for in learner work |
|---|---|---|
| Disciplinary | One subject supplies the concepts and methods. | Depth within a single subject, without a required cross-subject connection. |
| Multidisciplinary | Several subjects address a common theme, often independently. | Separate products or tasks that may share a topic but do not depend on one another. |
| Interdisciplinary | Two or more disciplines are deliberately integrated for a common purpose. | An explanation, solution or creation that shows how the perspectives work together. |
| Transdisciplinary | The inquiry crosses subject boundaries and may include community or professional knowledge. | Learners frame and address an authentic issue without treating school subjects as the only sources of expertise. |
| Thematic | A theme organizes activities across a curriculum. | Evidence of integration is present only if the theme requires conceptual or methodological connections. |
| Project-based | A sustained project organizes learning around a question or product. | The project may be interdisciplinary, but a project is not automatically interdisciplinary. |
The practical question is not which label wins. Ask whether the design preserves meaningful subject learning and makes learners use the subjects in combination.
How the learning process works
The following sequence is a planning model synthesized from curriculum guidance, not a compulsory formula. Schools can adapt the order, timing and level of scaffolding to their curriculum and learners.
- Choose a worthwhile question, phenomenon or problem. Start with an issue that genuinely benefits from more than one lens. A question should be specific enough to guide investigation and open enough to require reasoning, not just fact collection.
- Map each discipline’s contribution. Identify the concepts, knowledge and methods learners must learn in every participating subject. Specify what cannot be supplied by another discipline. This protects disciplinary depth and prevents a subject from being reduced to a source of worksheets or vocabulary.
- Design one coherent learning experience. Educators agree on sequence, vocabulary, resources, roles and the point at which learners will connect evidence. Decide whether classes meet together, work in parallel with shared checkpoints, or use a blended arrangement. A common calendar and shared success criteria prevent the unit from becoming several unrelated mini-courses.
- Teach the connections explicitly. Model how a method or idea from one subject changes the way a learner approaches another. Ask students to compare assumptions, translate representations, justify which evidence is reliable and explain how a conclusion depends on multiple perspectives. Connections should be visible in discussion, diagrams, notebooks or design records.
- Support inquiry, problem solving or creation. Learners gather and analyse evidence, test alternatives, revise explanations or build a product for a real audience. Teachers provide disciplinary mini-lessons when gaps appear instead of allowing the shared project to replace instruction.
- Assess both parts of the work. Evaluate subject-specific understanding and the quality of integration or transfer. A polished product should not compensate for inaccurate science, weak mathematics or unsupported claims in writing.
- Review and improve the design. Examine learner work, reflections and teacher observations. Check which connections were actually made, where students needed more scaffolding and whether the workload was realistic. Revise the next iteration for local curriculum requirements, learner needs and available expertise.
Education Scotland highlights connection, inquiry, reflection, conceptual understanding and real-world application. The IB gives examples of interdisciplinary understanding that include explaining a phenomenon, solving a problem, creating a product or raising a new question. These are possible purposes, not a requirement to include all of them in one unit.

An illustrative unit: investigating local water quality
The following is an example design, not a report of a particular school’s tested programme. A shared question might be: How healthy is the water in our local stream, and what should the community do about it?
What each discipline contributes
- Science: sampling procedures, indicators of water quality, fair testing and interpretation of biological or chemical observations.
- Mathematics: units, averages, rates, uncertainty, graphs and comparisons between sampling points or dates.
- Geography: mapping the catchment, land use, drainage and the relationship between location and observed conditions.
- Language arts: evaluating sources, explaining evidence, addressing an audience and making a claim with appropriate qualifications.
Where integration occurs
Learners use geographic information to choose sampling locations, apply scientific procedures, calculate and display results, then combine those findings in a public explanation. A final report, presentation or recommendation must show how place, measurements and evidence support the proposed action. If each class simply completes a separate water-themed activity and students never connect the results, the work is thematic or multidisciplinary rather than interdisciplinary.
Possible assessment evidence
Teachers could collect a sampling plan, data table, graph, map, explanation and reflection. The reflection might ask which conclusion would change if a sampling site moved, or how a measurement’s uncertainty affects the recommendation. Those prompts reveal whether learners can transfer and connect ideas instead of merely reproducing procedures.

Integrated learning is often promoted for engagement and transfer, but benefits are not automatic. The Australian Government’s integrated STEM guidance lists possible gains including cross-disciplinary thinking, interest in STEM ideas and processes, and increased STEM knowledge and engagement. The same guidance warns that integrated STEM can be difficult without suitable capability and says more evidence is needed. Those points concern integrated STEM specifically; they should not be treated as a guarantee for every age group, subject combination or timetable.

| Potential outcome | What available evidence indicates | How to interpret it responsibly |
|---|---|---|
| Academic and disciplinary engagement | A 2024 systematic review reports this as one of three broad outcome themes. | It is a reported category of outcomes, not proof that every interdisciplinary unit raises attainment. |
| Metacognitive skills | The same review identifies reflection on learning and thinking as a theme. | Activities must make planning, monitoring and revision visible; integration alone does not create metacognition. |
| Perspective taking | The review reports perspective-taking skills among the outcome themes. | Learners need to encounter and reconcile differing disciplinary assumptions, not just hear several teachers speak. |
| Interest and engagement in STEM | Australian Government guidance lists these as possible benefits of integrated STEM. | They are plausible aims accompanied by an explicit call for evaluation and stronger evidence. |
The 2024 review included 38 studies under a strict definition of interdisciplinary learning and 60 under a more lenient definition. These are counts of studies meeting different review criteria, not effect sizes, success rates or estimates of learning impact. The review describes the evidence base as still in its infancy and calls for clearer definitions and comparisons with cross- and transdisciplinary learning.
An IB research study published in 2021 used a literature review and an audit of curriculum documents across the IB’s four programmes. Its summary reports that interdisciplinary learning is embedded to a high degree while noting room for greater clarity and consistency. That finding describes IB curriculum documents and practice; it is not a causal evaluation of student outcomes.
How to design a strong interdisciplinary unit
Protect disciplinary depth
Write a short list of non-negotiable learning outcomes for every subject before choosing activities. A mathematics outcome should name the mathematical reasoning learners will perform, not merely “make a chart.” A language outcome should specify evidence-based communication, not only “present findings.” If a subject has no meaningful contribution, remove it rather than adding a token task.
Make the integration visible
Use a shared concept map, connection prompts or a design brief that requires learners to cite contributions from at least two disciplines. Teachers can ask, “What does this evidence allow us to claim?”, “Which disciplinary method produced it?” and “How does that result alter your design or explanation?” Such prompts turn integration into an observable practice.

Plan collaboration as real work
Agree on a common question, sequence, vocabulary and assessment calendar. Allocate time for co-planning and moderation. Where one teacher cannot know every discipline in depth, invite a colleague or community expert and define responsibilities clearly. The Australian Government guidance emphasizes teacher collaboration and building capability across STEM areas; the same principle applies beyond STEM.
Scaffold different learners
Provide accessible data sets, vocabulary supports, worked examples and multiple ways to represent understanding. Offer extension through more complex modelling, source evaluation or stakeholder analysis rather than simply adding volume. Ensure that practical investigations and public-facing products have alternatives for learners who cannot access a particular site, tool or mode of communication.
Assess the process as well as the product
A balanced rubric can include four dimensions:
- Disciplinary accuracy: correct concepts, methods and conventions in each subject.
- Connection: explicit, valid relationships among the disciplinary contributions.
- Reasoning and transfer: applying learning to a new case, decision or audience.
- Reflection: explaining revisions, limitations and how perspectives affected the outcome.
Keep subject grades distinguishable when required by local policy. A single overall mark can hide whether a learner struggled with a discipline or with synthesis.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely design problem | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Several classes use the same theme but produce unrelated work. | The theme was chosen without a shared intellectual task. | Rewrite one question or outcome that requires evidence from each discipline, then align the sequence. |
| The project is attractive but subject knowledge is shallow. | Making a product displaced instruction and practice. | List essential disciplinary lessons and checkpoints before selecting the final product. |
| One subject carries the workload while others supply decoration. | Contributions were not defined or weighted. | Assign a necessary method or concept to every discipline and remove nonessential components. |
| Teachers cannot agree on standards or deadlines. | Collaboration time and shared criteria were missing. | Use a short planning brief, a common calendar and moderation meetings focused on learner evidence. |
| Students cannot explain how the subjects connect. | Integration was assumed rather than taught. | Model a worked example, require connection statements and include reflection before the final submission. |
| Claims about success rely on enthusiasm alone. | The unit was not evaluated against intended outcomes. | Collect baseline and final work where feasible, analyse rubric dimensions separately and record implementation conditions. |
A New South Wales Department of Education resource quotes Putting Evidence to Work: A School’s Guide to Implementation: “It doesn’t matter how great an educational idea or intervention is in principle; what really matters is how it manifests in the day-to-day work of people in schools.” The observation is a useful test for any proposal: examine schedules, planning load, teaching moves and learner evidence, not just the concept’s appeal.

How to decide whether a proposed unit qualifies
Before approval, a planning team can ask the following questions:
- What specific knowledge and methods will learners gain from each discipline?
- What shared question, phenomenon, problem or outcome makes the combination necessary?
- Where will learners compare, translate or combine perspectives?
- Which piece of work will demonstrate both subject understanding and synthesis?
- Do teachers have the time, shared planning and disciplinary expertise the design requires?
- What learner evidence will show whether the intended connections were learned?
These questions are practical comparison criteria, not a validated scoring instrument. A proposal that cannot answer them may still be a worthwhile thematic or project-based unit, but it should not be presented as interdisciplinary learning.
Bottom line
Interdisciplinary learning works when integration is designed rather than assumed. Start with a question that needs multiple lenses, preserve the knowledge and methods of each discipline, teach learners how to connect them, and assess the resulting synthesis alongside subject accuracy. Its potential benefits are promising but unevenly evidenced, so schools should evaluate what actually happens in classrooms and refine the design for their own learners and constraints.
