What intelwidiums64.exe is
The name is commonly written as IntelWiDiUMS64.exe. The researched file record identifies the product as Intel WiDi, the company as Intel Corporation, and the description as Intel(R) User Mode Service. Its internal or original filename is listed as IntelWiDiUMS.exe. Intel WiDi was software for sending a PC display to a compatible wireless receiver, so this executable belongs to a wireless-display or Intel graphics software stack rather than to a normal document or user application.

Is intelwidiums64.exe safe?
There is no yes-or-no answer based only on the filename. A genuine Intel component normally has a consistent Windows or Intel driver location, a valid Intel Corporation signature, and file metadata that matches the installed hardware package. An unsigned copy, a signature that Windows cannot validate, a duplicate in an unexpected directory, or a Defender detection should be treated as a security problem until investigated.
1. Check the path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Details tab. If the process is not visible, reproduce the error or use the startup entry that launches it.
- Right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- Record the complete path before moving or deleting anything.
A Windows system or Intel driver directory is less suspicious than Downloads, a browser cache, AppDataLocalTemp, or a newly created user folder. Location is only one signal: a malicious file can be copied into a system-looking directory, and a legitimate installer can use a vendor-specific folder.
2. Inspect the signature and metadata
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signer and choose Details. Windows should report that the digital signature is valid; check that the signer is Intel Corporation where the package is expected to be Intel software.
- On the Details tab, note the file description, product name, version and original filename.
- If available in your organization’s tools, record a cryptographic hash so the exact copy can be compared with the installer or a known-good machine.
Windows Code Integrity uses cryptographic signing requirements for kernel-mode drivers to restrict unsafe or untested drivers. A failed or missing signature is therefore a meaningful warning, although a user-mode executable can still require separate malware scanning and package verification.

3. Scan and check reputation
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, install the latest security intelligence updates, and select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan, which checks all accessible files and running programs rather than only the usual quick-scan locations.
- If the process returns, unwanted software survives, or the scan cannot remove a detection, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
SmartScreen’s App Reputation warning uses download history, download volume, URL reputation and antivirus signals. A message saying that a file is “not commonly downloaded” is a caution signal, not conclusive proof of malware. Do not bypass a warning simply because the filename looks familiar.

What errors can appear?
Reports about this component include initialization failures, memory-access errors, stopped-working dialogs, nonresponsive shutdown messages and invalid-Win32 errors. Common wording includes:
intelwidiums64.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.
intelwidiums64.exe – Application Error
followed by a memory read or write reference.Intel(R) User Mode Service has stopped working.
End Program – intelwidiums64.exe. This program is not responding.
intelwidiums64.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
intelwidiums64.exe – Application Error. The application failed to initialize properly …
These messages describe the failure mode, not its root cause. The same “stopped working” dialog can result from a damaged installation, an incompatible driver, a missing dependency, a bad update, or a malicious replacement. Use the path, signer, event details and Defender result to choose the next action.
Likely causes of an intelwidiums64.exe crash
- Damaged Intel WiDi or graphics files: An interrupted update, disk error or partial uninstall can leave the user-mode service unable to start.
- Driver mismatch: A graphics, chipset or wireless-display driver may not support the current Windows build, firmware or connected receiver.
- Missing or incompatible dependencies: Shared runtime components or related Intel services can be absent, disabled or replaced by another installer.
- Obsolete software: A legacy WiDi utility may remain after the computer has moved to a newer display technology, leaving a startup component that no longer fits the installed driver.
- Corruption in Windows components: System-file damage can cause initialization or invalid-Win32 messages even when the Intel package itself is intact.
- Malicious substitution: An executable with the familiar name in a temporary or user-writable folder, especially one with no valid signature, may not be Intel software at all.
Safe repair sequence
Follow the steps in order. They preserve evidence, address security first, and avoid removing a file that a working display feature still needs.
Step 1: Capture evidence before changing anything
- Write down the complete file path from Task Manager or the shortcut that launched the error.
- Record the signer and whether Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Note the file version, product description, original filename and, where possible, the hash.
- In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application and inspect entries at the time of the crash. Record the faulting module and exception code; do not assume that the first filename in the dialog is the failing dependency.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows) for Intel WiDi, Intel graphics utilities or a computer-maker wireless-display package.
Step 2: Scan before replacing or deleting
Update Defender security intelligence, run a full scan, and use Defender Offline if the process keeps returning or a detection cannot be removed during normal Windows operation. Quarantine a confirmed threat through Windows Security. Do not restore it merely because its filename resembles an Intel component.

Step 3: Identify the hardware and Windows build
- Press Win+R, enter
winver, and record the Windows edition and build. - Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters, Network adapters and any wireless-display-related category. Record the exact Intel device model and whether a warning icon appears.
- Check the computer manufacturer’s support page for that model and Windows build. Intel’s official support/download channel can also be used when the manufacturer directs you there.
Install only a package intended for the exact hardware and Windows version. Intel security advisories have documented vulnerabilities in older Intel utilities; one Processor Identification Utility advisory released August 13, 2019, covered versions before 6.1.0731 and recommended updating. That history is a reason to prefer a current, vendor-supported package, not a reason to download a replacement executable from an unofficial file site.
Step 4: Repair or update the parent package
If the installed package offers Modify or Repair in Installed apps, use that option first and restart Windows. Otherwise download the matching graphics or wireless-display package from the computer maker or Intel, close display and recording applications, and run the installer as an administrator. Restart even if the installer does not demand it, then test the same action that previously triggered the error.
Do not copy a replacement intelwidiums64.exe from another PC. The executable may depend on a specific driver, registry configuration, service or set of libraries; copying one file can create a version mismatch and removes the evidence needed to determine whether the original was compromised.

Step 5: Reinstall the related driver when repair fails
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected Intel display or wireless device and choose Properties > Driver to record the current provider, date and version.
- Use the vendor’s documented uninstall method or Uninstall device only when you have the correct replacement package ready. If offered, select the option to remove the driver package; do not remove unrelated display devices.
- Restart Windows, install the downloaded package, and restart again.
- Check that the device starts without a warning icon and that the wireless-display function you need still works.
Rolling back from the same Driver tab can be appropriate when the crash began immediately after a known driver update and the button is available. Keep the prior installer or a restore point so you can return to the working state.

Step 6: Uninstall an obsolete WiDi component instead of deleting its EXE
If you never use the wireless-display feature and the component is clearly an old, signed package, remove the related Intel WiDi or computer-maker utility through Installed apps or the vendor’s documented uninstaller. Restart and confirm that graphics, network and display functions remain available. Manual deletion can leave startup entries, services and registry references behind, and it can break a feature that another Intel package still expects.
Step 7: Check Windows system files for initialization or Win32 errors
When the file is correctly signed and the Intel package has been repaired but Windows still reports initialization or invalid-Win32 failures, open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the check to finish, follow any repair instruction it gives, and restart. If Windows reports that it could not repair all files, use the component-repair procedure documented for your Windows edition before running System File Checker again. Do not download individual system DLLs from third-party sites.
Step 8: Isolate startup conflicts
If the crash appears only during login and scans are clean, temporarily disable the Intel WiDi startup entry in Task Manager > Startup apps (or the equivalent startup control in older Windows) and restart. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that the file is malicious. If disabling it stops the dialog and you do not need WiDi, leave it disabled or uninstall the parent package. If you need the feature, update or reinstall the package instead of permanently suppressing a required service.

Step 9: Escalate suspicious copies
Quarantine and investigate a copy that is unsigned, has an invalid signature, launches from a temporary or user-created directory, appears in several unusual locations, or is identified by Defender. Record the detection name and the process that launched it. Do not run an unknown “fix” utility or restore the file because another website lists the same filename. A security professional or the computer manufacturer can help correlate the hash, installer and event-log evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you delete intelwidiums64.exe?
Do not delete it simply because an error appears. First determine whether the file belongs to an Intel graphics or WiDi package and whether your computer still needs wireless display. If it is a legitimate but obsolete component, uninstall the related package using Windows’ Installed apps or the vendor’s uninstaller. If it is malicious, quarantine it with Defender and remove the associated installer or persistence mechanism. Deleting only the executable can cause repeated errors, leave a broken startup entry, or damage a feature that depends on it.
Choosing the right remedy
| Situation | Preferred action | Why | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signed file in an expected Intel or Windows path; crash began after an update | Repair, roll back or reinstall the matching graphics/WiDi package | Addresses version and dependency mismatches while preserving the feature | Use the exact hardware and Windows build |
| Signed file in an expected path; WiDi is no longer needed | Uninstall the related utility through Installed apps | Removes startup entries and dependencies together | Confirm that no required display workflow uses it |
| Unsigned or invalidly signed file, especially in a temporary/user folder | Defender full scan, Defender Offline if needed, then quarantine and investigate | Filename familiarity is not evidence of authenticity | Do not restore or replace the file manually |
| Clean scan and valid package, but Windows reports invalid Win32 or initialization errors | Repair Windows components and reinstall the parent package | Separates operating-system corruption from Intel package damage | Avoid downloading individual DLLs or EXEs |
| Device Manager shows a warning on the Intel display or network device | Use the manufacturer or Intel driver package for that model | The hardware driver may be the actual failing component | Do not install a package for a different model |
How to confirm the problem is fixed
- Restart Windows after the repair, update or uninstall.
- Open Task Manager and confirm that the process no longer crashes, loops or consumes abnormal resources during the test that previously failed.
- Repeat the wireless-display or graphics action that produced the error.
- Check Event Viewer for a new application-error entry at the same time.
- Verify Device Manager has no warning icon on the related Intel device.
- Run another Defender scan if the original file was suspicious or if security software reported a detection.
A successful repair means the specific failure no longer occurs under the same conditions; it does not establish that every copy with this filename on every PC is safe. Keep the recorded path, signature and package version if you need to contact the hardware maker or investigate a recurrence.
