IntelConnect.exe is reported as a non-core Windows executable installed with Intel/Killer connectivity software, including components associated with Intel Connectivity Performance Suite. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine or malicious. Verify its digital signature, file location, installer context and antivirus results before deciding what to do. Most related failures are caused by damaged Intel software, Visual C++ runtime registrations, blocked network or proxy access, security-software interference, or folders that the updater cannot write to.
What intelconnect.exe appears to be
IntelConnect.exe is not a Windows core file identified by the filename alone. Third-party process references associate it with KillerAPS/IntelConnect software from Intel, while Intel’s own documentation confirms the broader Intel connectivity software family and the Intel Driver & Support Assistant (DSA), a Windows utility that detects Intel hardware and offers compatible driver and software updates.

Intel’s public support material does not publish one canonical IntelConnect.exe path, filename hash or version that applies to every computer. Original-equipment manufacturers can package Intel connectivity components differently, so a path that is normal on one system is not automatically proof for another. Conversely, malware can copy a trusted filename. Treat the name as a clue, not an identity certificate.

The answer is conditional. A copy installed with Intel connectivity software, carrying a valid Intel digital signature and located in a normal program directory can be legitimate. An unsigned copy, a file in a temporary or user-download folder, or a copy detected by reputable security software should be treated as potentially unsafe until investigated.

Verify the running process
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Find IntelConnect.exe under Processes or Details. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the complete path before closing the window.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Intel or the documented software publisher. Note the file version and signing date.
- Use Details and General in the same dialog to record the product name, description, size and modification date. A mismatch between the description and the Intel software you installed is a reason to investigate further.
- Compare the path with the Intel or computer manufacturer package that installed the connectivity component. A location under a normal program or driver installation directory is less suspicious than a temporary folder, a browser-download directory, a user profile’s writable subfolder or another unexpected location.
Scan before taking destructive action
Run a full scan in Microsoft Defender or another reputable antivirus product. A valid signature is useful evidence, but it does not replace a malware scan; a stolen or misused certificate and a tampered installation still require investigation. If a scan reports a threat, let the security product quarantine it and save the detection name and path for follow-up.
When Microsoft Smart App Control is enabled, open Windows Security > App & browser control and review its status. Microsoft describes Smart App Control as blocking malware, potentially unwanted apps and unknown unsigned code by default. A block or warning is a signal to verify the source rather than to bypass the protection blindly.
| Evidence | What it suggests | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|
| Valid Intel signature, expected installation directory, no security detections | Likely an authentic Intel connectivity component | Keep it and troubleshoot the application if it crashes |
| Valid signature but an unfamiliar path or recently copied file | Needs context; a signed file can still be misplaced or bundled unexpectedly | Check installed apps, OEM documentation and scan results |
| No signature, temporary/download location or random product description | Potential impersonation or unwanted software | Do not run it; scan, quarantine if detected, and investigate the installer source |
| Security product detection | Possible malware or tampering | Quarantine according to the security product’s guidance and preserve the detection details |
Why intelconnect.exe errors happen
The symptom matters because a startup failure, an installer code and a network-update failure have different remedies.
Damaged Intel software or stale configuration
An interrupted update, incomplete uninstall or corrupted configuration data can leave the executable present but unable to start. Intel documents inaccessible folders, missing configuration data, stale data and download-write failures among conditions that can stop its updater utilities.

Visual C++ Redistributable registration problems
Intel’s documented DSA troubleshooting identifies corrupted Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable registrations as a possible cause of installer errors 0x80070570 and 0x80070666. These codes can appear even when the downloaded Intel package itself is intact.
Firewall, antivirus or endpoint-policy blocking
Security software can block the installer, updater service, local communication or downloads. Corporate endpoint controls may apply rules that home troubleshooting cannot change. Do not disable protection permanently; use a narrowly scoped, policy-approved exception only when the source is verified.
Proxy, browser or localhost restrictions
Intel’s blocked-DSA guidance notes that proxy and browser settings can prevent the utility from operating. Components that communicate through a local service may also require access to localhost and 127.0.0.1. A proxy that handles internet traffic but blocks local loopback requests can make a healthy process appear broken.

Network or service availability
Intel utilities need access to Intel services to download metadata, installers or drivers. DNS failures, captive portals, restricted networks and firewall rules can interrupt that exchange while leaving ordinary web browsing partially functional.

Actual process crash
If only IntelConnect.exe terminates while Wi-Fi, Ethernet and the rest of Windows networking continue to work, the fault may be limited to the connectivity application rather than the adapter driver. Event Viewer can distinguish an application exception from a driver or service failure.
How to fix intelconnect.exe errors
1. Capture the exact symptom
- Write down the complete message, error code, time and action that triggers it: Windows sign-in, startup, opening an Intel utility, updating a driver or connecting to a network.
- In Task Manager, use Open file location and record the path and signature information described above.
- Check whether networking itself works. If Wi-Fi or Ethernet is also failing, treat the problem as a possible adapter-driver or service issue; if networking works, focus first on the Intel application and its runtime.
2. Restart Windows and retry once
A restart clears a locked updater process and completes pending runtime or driver changes. After Windows starts, retry the same action once. If the error returns, continue rather than repeatedly killing the process.
3. Re-download the Intel package from an official source
Use Intel’s official download channel or the computer manufacturer’s support package that matches the model and Windows edition. Do not use a random executable-hosting site. Save the installer to a local folder you can write to, then right-click it and choose Run as administrator. An administrator launch helps when the installer must write protected program or service locations, but it cannot fix a blocked network, an invalid package or a damaged runtime by itself.

If repair does not work, Intel’s documented approach is to uninstall the affected redistributable entry and install a fresh package from Microsoft or the Intel installer’s trusted prerequisites, following the package’s architecture requirements. Removing a runtime can affect other applications, so record the entry first and avoid deleting unrelated versions merely because they have a different year or architecture.
5. Check writable folders and stale downloads
- Confirm that the account running setup can write to the installer’s download and configuration directories.
- Delete only clearly stale, incomplete Intel download data after closing the Intel utility. Do not remove a folder merely because its name contains “Intel”; preserve logs if you may need support.
- Run the installer again from a new local folder rather than a network share, cloud-only location or removable drive.
6. Review firewall and security controls
Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall and check whether the verified Intel utility is blocked on the network profile you use. Security suites and enterprise endpoint products may have separate application-control or web-filter rules. If your organization manages the computer, ask its administrator to review the block rather than changing policy yourself.
Do not add broad exclusions for an unverified IntelConnect.exe. First confirm the signature and path, then use the smallest temporary exception permitted by your security policy. Remove a test exception after the update succeeds.
7. Check proxy and localhost access
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and note whether a manual proxy or setup script is enabled. On a managed PC, record the setting instead of changing it without approval.
- Ensure local communication is not blocked. Intel’s guidance specifically calls out exceptions for
localhostand127.0.0.1when proxy settings interfere with DSA. - If a browser-based sign-in or download is involved, test with the normal Windows default browser and temporarily disable only extensions known to filter local pages, subject to your security policy.
- Retry on a trusted network without a captive portal. A successful test on another network points to the original proxy, DNS or firewall environment.
8. Confirm access to Intel services
Check that the computer has working DNS and internet access, that the system clock is correct, and that firewall or web-filter rules allow the verified Intel utility to reach its required services. A corporate network may need an administrator to allow those destinations. If the utility downloads successfully on another permitted network, keep the installation and security evidence for the network administrator.

9. Update or reinstall the related Intel connectivity software
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to identify the Intel Connectivity Performance Suite, Killer or other connectivity package associated with the process. If the application offers a Repair option, use it first. If no repair is available, uninstall only the clearly identified application, restart Windows, and install the matching Intel or OEM package. Avoid removing the network adapter driver while troubleshooting an application-only crash unless the adapter itself is failing.
10. Inspect Event Viewer for a recurring crash
- Press Win+R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application, choose Filter Current Log, and filter for Error around the crash time.
- Open the event whose faulting application is IntelConnect.exe. Record the faulting module, exception code, application path and event ID.
- Also check Windows Logs > System for service, network-adapter or driver errors at the same time.
A faulting module belonging to the Intel application supports an application repair or reinstall. A Windows system module, security product or adapter driver in the event points to a broader compatibility or driver investigation. Preserve the event details before uninstalling anything.
11. Repair Windows components only when evidence points there
If several unrelated applications crash or Windows reports damaged system files, use an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt and run sfc /scannow. If SFC reports that it cannot repair files, use the Windows servicing repair procedure appropriate to your edition, then restart and test again. These commands are not a substitute for verifying an untrusted IntelConnect.exe; they address Windows component damage, not malware identity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan you delete intelconnect.exe?
Do not delete the executable directly from its folder. Removing a single file can leave services, scheduled tasks, drivers or registry entries behind and can break the Intel connectivity package. It may also remove a legitimate component while leaving the underlying problem unresolved.
When removal is reasonable
- You have confirmed the installed application that owns the file and no longer need that feature.
- The file is unsigned or oddly located and a reputable security scan or investigation indicates tampering.
- The Intel or OEM package has a documented uninstall path and you have recorded the evidence needed for recovery.
Safer removal sequence
- Disconnect from sensitive networks if malware is suspected, and run a full security scan.
- Record the path, signature status, detection name, Event Viewer details and installed-package name.
- Uninstall the owning Intel or OEM application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or the package’s own uninstaller.
- Restart Windows and confirm that Wi-Fi or Ethernet still works.
- If the file remains and is identified as malicious, follow the security product’s quarantine or remediation process rather than manually deleting it.
For an unsigned file with no identifiable owner, quarantine and investigate first. For a correctly signed file that merely crashes, repair or reinstall the owning software instead of deleting the executable.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right repair path
| Situation | Best first action | Why | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unsigned or suspicious path | Scan and preserve evidence | Safety must be established before repair | High; quarantine preserves a recovery path |
| 0x80070570 or 0x80070666 during setup | Repair or reinstall the relevant Visual C++ Redistributable | Intel identifies runtime registration problems as possible causes | Moderate; record installed versions first |
| Updater cannot download or write files | Check permissions, writable folders, proxy, firewall and network access | Environment failures can mimic a broken executable | High when settings are documented before changes |
| Only IntelConnect.exe crashes; networking works | Collect Event Viewer data, then repair or reinstall the owning Intel application | Points to an application fault rather than an adapter outage | High |
| Wi-Fi or Ethernet also fails | Check the adapter, Windows services and the matching OEM/Intel driver | The connectivity problem may be broader than the process | Moderate; have the correct driver package available |
What not to do
- Do not assume that a process-listing label proves the file is dangerous.
- Do not assume that an Intel-looking filename proves authenticity.
- Do not download a replacement executable from an unknown website.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus, Smart App Control or the firewall to make an installer run.
- Do not delete the file before recording its path, signature, owner and error details.
- Do not remove every Visual C++ Redistributable entry indiscriminately; other programs may depend on them.
How to prevent repeat failures
- Install Intel connectivity software and drivers only from Intel or the computer manufacturer, using the package intended for the exact model and Windows edition.
- Keep Windows, security software and network drivers current through approved update channels.
- Maintain free space in the system drive and avoid running installers from temporary or removable locations.
- On managed networks, document proxy and firewall requirements for Intel update utilities before deployment.
- Save the signed file path and Event Viewer details whenever a crash recurs; this makes it easier to distinguish an application defect from a driver or security-policy block.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows problems, clean temporary and cache files, review certain security and vulnerability settings, and log app crashes. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
