What Is Instant Secure Erase? Definition, How It Works, and What to Check

Instant secure erase (ISE) is a drive-level sanitization feature that can make stored data unreadable by changing or deleting the cryptographic key used to access it. Because this method need not overwrite each storage location, it can be much faster than a full-drive overwrite. The name is not a universal standard or guarantee: the exact operation depends on the drive, its configuration and interface, and the commands supported by the host.

What instant secure erase means

ISE is a vendor term commonly used for a cryptographic erase operation. A compatible drive stores data in a form that depends on cryptographic key material; an erase command changes or removes the key associated with that data. The data may remain physically present, but it is no longer readable using the prior key.

Western Digital describes its ISE as an implementation of the T10/T13 SANITIZE command. Its documentation says the operation deletes the internal key used to scramble and unscramble data, and may address user-accessible data as well as hidden areas such as reallocated or spare blocks. That description applies to the manufacturer’s implementation, not automatically to every drive labeled ISE. Western Digital’s ISE white paper

Seagate’s technical brief describes ISE on self-encrypting drives as changing the data encryption key. It lists several possible mechanisms, including TCG security protocol erase, TCG RevertSP, ATA Security Erase commands, and SANITIZE. The applicable mechanism depends on the drive’s configuration and supported command set. Seagate’s technical brief

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

How cryptographic erase works

  1. The drive stores data in a form that relies on cryptographic key material for access.
  2. A supported erase command changes or deletes the key associated with the stored data.
  3. Data remaining on the medium cannot be read using the previous key.

This describes the cryptographic mechanism; it does not establish that every drive encrypts data at rest in the same way. Western Digital cautions that its ISE/SE feature labels alone do not mean a drive provides encryption to protect data at rest. Check the specific model’s documentation for its encryption design and erase behavior.

How ISE differs from other erase methods

Method What it does Practical distinction
Cryptographic erase (crypto erase or crypto scramble) Changes or deletes internal cryptographic key material. SATA documentation may use “Crypto Scramble”; SAS documentation may use “Crypto Erase.” Can be fast because it does not require rewriting every storage location, when the drive supports the operation and its key handling meets the required assurance.
HDD overwrite Rewrites data using a supplied bit pattern. Can take longer than key-based erase; available on supported HDD configurations.
SSD block erase Uses internal SSD functions to electrically erase storage blocks. An SSD-specific alternative whose availability depends on the device.
Host file deletion or manual overwrite Deletes files or overwrites data through the host. Do not assume it reaches remapped or hidden device areas or is equivalent to device SANITIZE options.

Western Digital also warns that its SANITIZE-based ISE should not be confused with the similarly named ATA SECURITY ERASE UNIT command. Similar names do not prove that commands behave the same way. Follow the exact drive documentation and the sanitization procedure required by your organization.

Does ISE permanently erase data?

ISE is intended to make prior data inaccessible through the cryptographic key it changes or deletes; it does not necessarily physically overwrite every cell. Whether that result satisfies a particular security or disposal requirement depends on the drive’s implementation, configuration, and the assurance required for the data. NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2, published in September 2025, defines media sanitization as a process that “renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” Its guidance places sanitization and disposal decisions in the context of information sensitivity. Seagate’s 2015 brief says supported operations on its products can erase contents “in seconds.” That is a manufacturer statement about the operations it describes, not a general timing guarantee for all drives.

What to verify before using ISE

  • Exact model and feature support: Check the current OEM specification. A host may be able to query whether SANITIZE is supported and which options the drive reports.
  • Interface and command path: SATA, SAS, and other interfaces can expose different command names and options. Do not assume a command works across all drives.
  • Drive state and access: Some operations require the drive to be unlocked or authenticated first. Western Digital’s product disclosure says encrypted drives should be unlocked before sanitize commands.
  • Host controller and utility compatibility: The controller must support the relevant command. Western Digital documents sg_sanitize for SAS and hdparm for SATA in its disclosure; these tools and procedures are manufacturer-specific and may change. Seagate also notes the host controller requirement. Western Digital data security disclosure
  • Required assurance and evidence: Apply the sanitization policy appropriate to the data’s sensitivity and retain the outcome or records the organization requires.

ISE is therefore best understood as a potentially rapid, device-level cryptographic sanitization capability—not as a universal command, a guarantee of encryption at rest, or a synonym for every secure-erase feature.
